    "We´re going to win so much you may even get tired of winning" - Aurelian to his troops, 270 AD

    Aurelian was known to be a very stern ruler and punished harshly corrupt and incompetent officials and soldiers. One of the bureaucrats at his court mismanaged something and then lied about it, and out of fear of being punished, he forged a document sentencing several of the high ranking officers to death. He presented it to them and they then murdered the emperor to save themselves. Shortly after that, they realized how things really were and were among the first to call for the official's head. You can probably imagine what fate he suffered. However, in the end, it did not save them and most of them were executed by Aurelian's successor Tacitus.
    At this example, you can see how just one incompetent little weasle can alter the future of the entire world. Kind of worrying isn't it.

    • @totalwarplayer
      @totalwarplayer 7 лет назад +126

      We actually alter the future by every decision we make but it is hard to say how much of an impact we make. Maybe some of us have already done something presumably harmless which can, in the end, alter the future in unimaginable ways and we will never know. From a historical point of view, I find it frustrating how a seemingly minor incompetence, mistake or even bad luck can ruin everything. For example, you can be an archduke's driver who takes a wrong turn, stops right in front of his assassin and therefore fucks up the whole 20th century.

    • @brendancrazy1
      @brendancrazy1 7 лет назад +50

      To be fair, that assassinated simply triggered a war that was inevitable. Tensions between world powers at the time were at an all-time high; WWI was bound to happen.

      Being discarded by the Empire saved it from the Plague of Justinian which is the cause behing the major shift in demographics of Europe after the Fall of the Western Roman Empire. The Eastern Empire remained highly urbanised and interconnected and was rapidly recovering from the 5th century's devastation in the Balkans, but that interconnection and urbanisation proved to be its bane since it helped spread the plague even more rapidly and increased its devastation as the densely populated urban areas proved to be breeding grounds for the plague and the well preserved Roman roads helped carry it far and wide across the Empire's holdings in a matter of days. Persia suffered from this too.
      Meanwhile, the Barbarian Kingdoms, Slavic tribes, Arabs, Nomads like Huns and Avars and places like Dacia were spared from this degree of devastation as they were neither as well connected nor urbanised in any meaningful form. This made the organised Empires of Rome and Persia disproportionately weakened to the enemies surrounding them, paving the way for 6th and 7th century migrations and conquests of the Lombards, the Slavs, Nomads such as the Turks and the Arabs as well as the collapse of the Persian Empire and the partial collapse of Eastern Rome. It also led up to relatively more minor events such as the disappearance of final Latin speaking strongholds in Eastern Europe such as Illyria as they got overrun by the Slavs. Of course this wasn't the only cause leading up to some of these events but it was definitely a very major factor.

      The achievements of an emperor are not to be measured by his personal life events but by the way he run the Empire. Claudius was a very very capable administrator and a great builder and his reign corresponded to a great period of stability for the empire

    Great video! Definitly very well-researched and pedagogical. My one small gripe with the narrative though is the portrayal of the barbarian world. The graphics almost seems to suggest these were unified kingdoms on the border of rome. This was not the case. No one king ruled over all visigoths (The title of King of the goths did not come into being as far as we know until Alaric claimed the title in the early 5th century). The visigoths were not even regarded as a people at this point. There was a people beyond the danube the romans labeled as goths, sure - but they had no institution of state or empire as we would understand it. The same goes for Franks and Vandals. They might have been lead by kings and nobles, some more powerful than others. But these kings were not the leaders of nations, as we see in the middle ages. A frankish king in the 3rd century was no Charlamagne.

    Had Aurelian lived longer he would've pacified the Germanic tribes but he wouldn't expand. He would've probably installed a puppet ruler. As a child I always wondered had Rome built a mighty wall along it's borders then maybe it woul've continued to live. Aurelian would've definetly stabilised the economy. Which could help him building a giant wall along it's borders

    Why are you using BCE/CE instead of BC/AD?

    • @InFiveMinutes
      @InFiveMinutes  4 года назад +1

      Although I myself am Catholic, I thought BCE/CE was more accommodating to others. It is not something I have strong feelings about. One way or the other, the numbering system derives from the Christian tradition, and lettering choices are not going to change that.
