6/5 when it works. 3/5 when you're figuring out where the camera is
This and Flower are the only games to give me proper motion sickness while playing them. It was so bad with SotC I actually returned the game because I knew I'd never finish it.
If people want to argue about the clunky movement controls being consistent with the character or whatever that's fine with me. But there's just no excuse for camera control so poor it actually makes you nauseous. That's the sort of thing that literally makes a game unplayable.
@@spencers5898 only just recently playing the remake. And it's even more annoying then I remember. I get that they want to show the scope of the world and bosses and all. But I feel like they should at least let you toggle off the readjust, that continously tries to center the camera back up rather than letting you look around and have the camera stay where you put it
@@spencers5898 honestly if you're getting motion sick that's on you. The glitchy and frustrating shit is a more relatable problem to most

MeowAlien にゃあエイリアン
And Knack?!!!!!!!!!!!!
its already been remade
na that was just a hd remaster, this version has been built from the ground up, new terrain/meshes/textures/animations/lighting effects ect then having to rebuild the controls and game play to fit the new world while using all the new assets while still trying to maintain the original games feel.
too bad Ico didn't make the cut for a second remake
MeowAlien にゃあエイリアン And Knack 2 deserves a remake
I think one of my favorite memories of this game was stumbling across a beautiful serene forest that was, as far as I remember, not really near any colossus. Weird little ruins tucked way the hell out in the middle of nowhere where you can find a fruit tree and chase a lizard for 30 minutes. This game is so huge and empty in a good way that I've never really experienced since
When he said “and chase a lizard for 30 minutes” I felt that
Are you supposed to chase the lizards?
@@Bidens_Diaper There are lizards with white tails that can either give you a max health boost or a max stamina boost. I forget which one it is. There's fruit you can find that gives the other.
@@entririhunter Beat the whole game without ever doing that lol
I remember that!!
I explored around, found that area, and had an mental crisis like: "Wtf am I doing here, is there anything to exploring, what's the point, what am I doing..."
And then I saw the lizard.
Also for some reason, always take around 30 minutes to catch it.

One of the most beautiful games I've ever played. I pulled it out of a discount bin at Walmart. I started it up and I didn't put it down until it was over. This is a game I will always recommend to anyone.
My young clueless self spent hours being lost wondering how am I going to find these colossi using that vague ray of light.
Me too but never figured out how to kill end boss woops
I just picked it up on ps5 I’ve been playing for 10 mins and can’t stand the wonky ass unexplained controls.
I had to look up a RUclips video to figure out how to climb the first wall. The first colossus fight was horrendous. Hate everything about it for now.
I’m really giving it a chance but holy shit it’s sucks from what I’ve seen.
I see some comments : « wonky controls is part of the charm » no. No it isn’t. You make a remake for next gen consoles and can’t bother making decent controls?
@DaxInvader It literally tells you what to do. I understand maybe struggling to acclimate to the feel of the game, but it tells the controls on your way to the first colossus.

I never thought the controls were that bad. I thought that climbing up a giant moving object should offset your balance and often. Also, the horse seemed to get the job done. It's not like horses can drift or make sudden sharp turns without diluting it's momentum.
I think the wobbly walking on the bosses is the best implementation of it's realistic approach to controls. The climbing is really stiff though and the horse struggles a lot in tighter areas like when you cross a bridge.
videogamedunkey a question did you try to move Agro yourself trough these tighter areas or did you let him use his own path finding because his own path finding gave me no problems in smaller areas and bigger I just controlled him myself
If you just hold down Triangle, the horse will auto-navigate tighter areas, minimizing the clumsiness.
But there's always the problem of, when climbing on a monsters forearm, "if I press up, which direction does the game think that is?"
I see where both of you guys are coming from. In the Colossus fights with the horse I thought certain areas were too tight, and it made it difficult to maneuver. However, I also found it just way too satisfying to launch myself from the horse and onto the Colossus's back to care. Shadow of the Colossus really knows how to implement scale and tone, and, outside of the actual fights since those are entirely relative based on the player's abilities, pacing as well. The game is just too beautiful for me to linger on what I consider very minor flaws. Half the game so far, for me, has been just running around the world and looking at things. I'm five hours into this game and have only beaten 7 Colossus so far because I just love exploring. That's what caught my attention so much. I've just never played anything like this game, and it's a game that requires so much risk to create because of how perfectly the designers have to make everything for it to be worth anyone's time. So for me, this game is, above all else, beautiful, beyond satisfying, and properly intense, able to make you feel dread and awe at the same time because of how beautiful but daunting the world and Colossi are.
5/5, mastapeece (to me).
Not to mention that if you are in a fight and Agro is there, Wander will scream "Agro!!" when you call for him, which is just one of my favorite things in the game.
videogamedunkey I dont think the controls are bad, its just that the game can be frustrating by nature.
Definitely a few times i remember where ill let go of the colossus and im stumbling around trying to grab the damn weak point only for it to do a fucking 720 triple backflip and send me crashing down a million ft.
One of the greatest moments of my childhood is me and my cousins taking turns at this game and just the real tension and joy at cheering each other on. The highlight of this was the on the sandworm fight. My older brother was running from it with no life left whistling for Agro and all of us just screaming for him to catch up. No game has ever replicated that moment for me.
I have a cousin named Syler that played SOTC with me and my cousins, we really had the same experience I love that
I'd have to say a 3.5, but considering giga knack, i'd have to say it's a 79/3 knacksterpiece.
Thought he said giga neck
is that 79 a reference to the secret in the game?
I'm glad he spoke his mind despite this game pretty much being a revered classic. Everything has its faults, and nothing is exempt from proper criticism.
Yeah but he got upset over minimal stuff that's more his fault than the games. He didn't take the time to learn to controls and the physics and complained about the sword not working. Same goes with PUBG, its not fun until you learn the physics and how to time shots. The comment above also explained that the sword doesnt work in shadows. You watch him play getting over it and it's the same story. It took me less time than dunkeys whole video to get further than him when i played it for the first time. I wouldn't say its a 5/5 perfect game but its higher than a 3, yaknadamean?
I get what your saying, I just still feel like his review is fair. His knocks on the control scheme are down to his own impatience and unwillingness to learn and master said control scheme, and this factors into his overall opinion on the game. (He's not the only one either, read some of these comments.) Really that's all this video is, his opinion on the game.
The only thing he actually complains about are the controls, he praises everything else but the graphics, which he pretty much says are on par with what we expect today. If this makes the game a 3/5 in his opinion, then that's what it is. In my opinion, easily a 4/5. This game has aged so well that you can still boot it up on your ps2 and have a blast if you wanted to, and that's saying something. But if to him, it's a 3/5 because they haven't really improved on anything but the graphics and performance of the game, then that's still fair.
You got all that from a 4 minute video?
Who wants to play a game with intended broken platforming gameplay? Years ago, when I played it, I sure didn't. So I never played it again
I would only criticize dunkey's review for being very brief and lacking support for his claims particularly on the controls. If you are going to criticize clunkiness and controls you really need to explain why rather than showing half second clips of why that is the case. Otherwise, I pretty much liked this video.

In part, the controls being how they are makes sense with the story. The Wanderer is not good at all with the sword but he has great bow skills and notice how he has a good stance when using the bow too. Probably had good bow training and not so good (or none?) sword training. His cloak had the same symbol you see on the cloaks of the other tribe members (duh) and it's the glyph that appears on the weak spot of the colossi. So he was probably part of the, say, order of people who were guarding the sword and the place were Dormin was sealed. But this, and the fact that the colossi are so strong (and so many) just add to the point that he was REALLY willing to save that girl. No matter how much he lacked the strength (he kinda lacks muscles), the skill and even knowing what he was doing was forbidden by his tribe he still went through with it.
Aaaaaaaaaand in part...well, PS2 era technology haha

I eventually played this game on PS3 having heard that the controls would be janky. I just didn't find that to be the case. I don't remember jank. I remember a guy awkwardly climbing and holding on for dear life...to giant moving, flailing, fighting, dying colossi. I didn't once blame the controls when I failed. That's just my experience. Man, when people say you need to play this game, though, they're absolutely right. There is something indescribable about how the game infuses you with emotion. I love the way you make video games feel so magical.
You know. This will sound weird, but playing through the game again I stopped trying to fight the camera and controls and just let the game lead the way. Took a breath and stopped trying to force things, but to enjoy the ride and control the Wanderer more reactively then anything else. And I loved the game all the more. I didn't find myself being frustrated with the controls like I did in the PS2 days.
So just take a breath and enjoy the ride.
You're absolutely right.
Same here. It's frustrating but it's worth it and doesn't detract from the game.
It's funny because I don't remember these bad controls that people complain so much, honestly. The game worked fine, all the crazy camera angles were part of the fun, especially in the aerial battles. There's some weird inputs and etc.. But I think the Ico/Colossus are so naturally weird games, the bizarre controls kinda fits with the overall theme. If your character plays so smoothly and moves so effortless, that can erase the difficulty of an already easy game.
Damn

You were a lot more gentle with this than I thought you'd be
The music is so amazing. Swift Horse especially is just gorgeous. The controls are clunky until you get used to it. I kinda feel like the game would lose some of it's personality if it was changed to much. If you haven't played it, do yourself a favor and don't miss out on this.
Tuschi yeah I still managed to play it on ps2
But oh my, that soundtrack is still the best one to date
Then play a remaster and dont play a remake if you want the same game.
This Game for me is just a remaster.
I think I don't quite get what you're saying. I think this is a fantastic remake/remaster whatever you wanna call it.
Tuschi I mean, a remaster is the same game with improved graphics and even some new desing with the same levels.
A remake is meant to be a new game with new graphics redesigned levels and music, with new content.
This remake has a lack of this.
Fair enough. But at least it's not worse than the original so people can still enjoy it on the same level with better graphics. An overall improvement to gameplay would be pretty sweet but I guess it would have been easy to mess it up. I'm pretty happy with what we got but I understand your point.

In this comment section, there are people who think an arbitrary number at the end of a review is the only thing that matters, then there are the people who actually pay attention to the review and realise just how much you enjoyed the game. My biggest gripe were the controls too, overall i agree, everyone needs to sit in a room alone and experience the game from start to finish. This game was way ahead of it's time and bluepoint did an amazing job of bringing the game to modern standards without losing the soul of the game.
It's like they only hear all the bad things Dunkey said about this game.
JPLS2018 It’s not a bad score, it’s a good game but it just has some kinks to it.
I can't wait for the ps5 so they remaster this game again so I can buy it for the 20th time
War Numen no, this remake is unnecessary and sucks a lot of the soul out of the original game. play the original, or emulate if you can. obviously the sound quality wont be as good as today, but the soundtrack and game itself still hold up on their own, no remake needed. no game needs to be remade every 4 fucking years or whatever
JPLS2018 the controls are worse in this iteration than in any other build of sotc, and the game doesnt even control poorly
Shadow of the Colossus and The Last Guardian were not mechanical failures, they were just mechanically challenged. Each creature had dynamic climbing surfaces, over many moving polygons. When you climb, you are climbing over a mesh of triangles, which don't like the Cartesian coordinate system. At all times, the game needs to determine the player's position, which section of the climbing mesh it is on, and which direction in 3D space they are facing. Some studios have mechanical difficulties with even the most basic climbing abilities over static objects (seriously, Space Engineers doesn't even have ladders). On top of that, the creatures' AI had to respond while the player is climbing them.
The entire concept of having moving "levels" on these Colossi is a challenge. Adding a huge world around them just makes things even better.
I hope Doonki reads this.
My god, the thought of someone thinking it is necessary to write a comment that long, defending this games trash controls blows me away
Angered Cheese
Nope, he’s correct and this needed to be said since Dunkey’s inaccurate assessment of the game continues to influence people like you.

No he's not, and donkeys not influencing me, I played this when the PS3 version came out and hated the fucking controls. This games fan base is becoming so cancer.
so what you're saying is, shadow of the colossus tried something stupid and impossible which didn't work and ruined the game
yes, i agree
Well I know one thing: I need to get me that soundtrack.
You're so right about the feeling of killing the colossi. I first played the game on PS2 in 2017, so my first experience didn't have the trophy unlock interrupting the cutscene after you kill the first colossus. And up until that point I was nervous and anxious, because I knew I had to fight this big ass monster but didn't know how I was going to do it. I mean the scale of the colossus compared to your character is huge, and I wasn't sure I was going to be able to pull this off. But of course you learn how to play the game, you kick its ass. And when I was killing it I felt so triumphant! The music was inspirational, pushing me forward, very encouraging to me. And I could see slowly and surely I was taking the colossus's health down. I felt unstoppable. Then I plunged my sword into it for the final time, and suddenly the cutscene plays. The music is somber, depressing, and the colossus begins to stumble as it struggles to keep itself upright and struggles to keep itself alive. Then it collapses. And I was just sitting there like, "Whoa...wait did I do the right thing? Do I keep going?" and of course I did keep going because that's all you can do. It was such a wonderfully uncomfortable experience, and I'm very glad to have felt it.
I think Team Ico's intentions behind those unpredictable elements is to create a feeling that the game's world adheres to its own rules and lives on regardless of the player. This subverts many player expectations, most players instinctively think games are only made up of obstacles that can be destroyed, avoided or solved and that the player will have full control over a set of tools to overcome these obstacles. Team Ico has consistently employed this air unpredictability in all their games to create simplistic themes through their mechanic's; leading the girl through the world of Ico says a lot about responsibility and trust, going through the feat that is killing all the colossus in SOTC says a lot about sacrifice and the last guardian sort of mixes these together with themes of sacrifice, understanding and trust playing a large role in all the gameplay mechanics. For some people, this is a hard sell since it can feel like a game that doesn't function properly, but for others, this might be why they think these are best games ever made. (thanks for reading if you got this far)
That's exactly why I feel these games are some of my personal favorites. The thought and emotion that comes from them is glorious
Holy shit. This is beautiful.
Why do you have to explian this masterpiece to these fools and joke of a gaming channel?
"it's not a bug, it's a feature".
~ Basically you
Also I have a bridge I'd like to sell you
Predictably unpredictable.
2001 huh? *Remembers Halo*
*PELICAN!*
i was yelling at the screen "show morrowind" through that entire scene. it's one of my favourite games but boy is it ever a good example of 2001 games with shit animation
*remembers own birth*
ObliviousMiner
morrowind came out in 2002
Ah, the good old days before Xbox Live. You see, you had to all play in the same room on the same TV, and even call the other players gay to their faces. Good times.
Hi there dunkey although i know you probably won't read this but just wanted to let you know that your videos never fail to make me smile and help me feel better even while having depression and being constantly bullied at school
Me and my brother are big fans of your channel .
Thank you soo much
The games are so simple but so powerful. The things people do for the ones they love.
*who would win? dunk or army of colossus?*
*KNACK*
fruitloops Knack.
Knack always wins.
Depends on how much spaghetti and meatballs Dunk ate that day
Knack
Knack is free this month for playstation plus users...it's also valentines day this month...coincidence?
Just seeing gameplay of this gives me nostalgia, not all games are perfect, but damn it was fun to play as a kid
The atmosphere, music, and the setting are just amazing. I also loved the gameplay. Getting the remake on PS4 was so exciting.
If you actually cared about the game and was nostalgic about it you would appreciate the original graphics
this was the first video game to ever make my 14 year old self tear up
> dunkey just makes a new video
> gets 2.5k + views in seconds
How do you do it my man.
Mr.CanoeMan because sotc is a legendary game

3/4 of the comments are sayin' it's a great game but it isn't knack 2 so it is bad.

Everything should be Knack but it isn't, so everything is bad except Knack beaceause it's Knack.
that's the sad truth :(
Dead meme. Step up your game. 2/10
knack 2 is dogshit. knack 3 is the good one
"You got Frankie" Why did that make me laugh so hard?

That was a cold ass review dunk, though it ain't as cold as Ice Knack *ooooooohhhh it's a MASTA PIECE !*
on one hand... masterpiece... on the other... nostalgia goggles
I'll just love it quietly in the corner.
its like me with fable 3, i absolutely loved it, but i constantly hear people hated it haha
Man, I thought you couldn't help but love this game if you saw it through to the end. I thought it was a masterpiece, and I just replayed it last year before I even knew about the remake. I just sat down with some friends and we passed the sticks all night and beat it that night. I guess the controls aren't great, but I think that was a conscience choice and is part of the challenge of the game. You have to pretty much become a master the game by the end of it.
It's definitely a puzzle game in disguise. If you aren't okay with that I could see you having an issue with some parts of it, but it's soooo worth seeing it through anyway. You really had to have played it yourself blind to fully get it too. If you don't know the feeling of personally plunging your sword into the skull of one of those giant beasts, killing them without fully understanding why, it's just not the same.
Exodarion Nothing is better than having your own STD sword
This will always be one of my favourite games ever made!
Good job for speaking your mind and challenging a game that has a cult following like Shadow of the colossus. Very fair review
That Last Guardian scene with Shadow Of Collosus background music x'D
I agree guys, Bunkey did overplay the controls, but let's not forget Dinkley has said many times he is a rather impatient guy, so of course bad controls would upset him. If I were to rate the game on a 1-5 basis like Gunko does, I would give it a 4 out of 5, *almost* a 5.
Knack/5
Bilbo Baggins the Wise so you mean, like, 15/5?
Yeah this is the guy who couldn't aim in Splatoon.
I'd give Dumbo 4/7 Dinko-points.
Frogger 2:Swampy's Revenge/ 5?
Just finished the game and coming back to this review is like a revelation. It turns out Jason knows a thing or two about videogames!
Thanks Dunkey! Now i know that i will DEFINITELY try it out on my new ps2
Easily one of the best games to ever come out on the playstation. It’s one of the best games guys ONE. I know that knack exists obviously smh come on
eh, maybe on the PlayStation 2
Rob Garcia Uh, my dude, Knack exists.
It's good and all but...
*Is it Knack 2?*
UnPhayzable I hope you get top comment

You misspelled super Mario Bros 2
How original
At least we have Giga Knack.
what a great timing
"untouchable"

I'm playing through this game rn and you were spot on about the controls. They feel so archaic and imprecise you can never get a good handle on your guy or the horse it's like you're constantly fighting with it to get a good grip on them. The game is good but Bluepoint really could've taken more liberties with the controls
