    Death Stranding is so immersive because mostly it feels like what I imagine a real life in a post apocalyptic world would be like. For me the best part of death stranding was finishing a zip line or a piece of road and booting the game back up and seeing it have dozens or hundreds of likes from other players. Or starting a structure and finding it finished by another player. Those elements I think were probably better when the game launched and it was more active but it gave a very satisfying feeling to the building mechanics that I haven’t had from other primarily single player story driven games.

      look man, I ain't tryna beef rn.
      I just want spread my take on this.
      gameplay loops are as good as we, the human, make them.
      games are but extensions in our lives and their enjoyment is all interpretation.
      the aesthetic of a game creates certain patterns and ideas into the mind, it allows for a comfort and familiarity to develop.
      we take these aesthetics into our lives which then enhances and refines those only for the game to change them again.
      that is the ever-developing cycle, which is affected by the aesthetics you consume.
      if the world of death stranding, a world of flowing beauty, the cold display and warm direction create the most pleasing god damn contrast.
      the inclusions of Low Roar within the world are beyond words.
      i took those songs into my life, which effected my life.
      the gameplay is the game.
      the game is what is created by us.
      the aesthetics are a great factor in what we think of a game.
      therefore, aesthetics affect core gameplay loops.

      Honestly, I think his reviews are dragged down by some of his content. Not the humor within them generally, but in the "lol random" stuff. I can't fault him, it has built him a huge audience, but the older you get the less funny it is. Especially when the average Dunkey viewer is a teenager spamming memes from previous videos in the comments.
      But damn are his reviews and all times where he is serious in addition to humorous still good. Even when I don't agree with him (I love JRPGs) I respect his opinions because he is upfront about his tastes and preferences, so you can easily compensate for your own tastes and preferences. I got through it, because I looked forward to getting the next unlockable equipment, gear, cosmetic plus another star on Norman's pants as the clients are appreciative and the star(means you maxed the rep with a station) feels earned. The star shows how committed of a gopher you are and it looks and feels nice tacking on another star every time. The only big negative about the game is that once you get to last few chapters the game essentially sets you on rails until you finish the game taking about a few hours to conclude. During these last few chapters the game finally decides to pull back the curtains and finally explain and connect the dots about the story. Also, they have you sit through(you run around on the beach waiting for the credits to end) the entire credits screen before they FINALLY finish connecting the dots and end the story soon after. After completing the game you look at what you've accomplished, people you helped, the experiences, all the items you've acquired and feel fulfilled and appreciate the journey from the very beginning to the very end. Would I play it again? Not unless I feel nostalgic.

    • @MrMetalforever5
      @MrMetalforever5 2 года назад +36

      I honestly doubt that, as unlike behind the scenes footage of George Lucas making the Star Wars prequels, it seemed all of the team were having a good time making the game and weren’t just terrified of the director, at least in the mini-documentary that came with the game.
      That and the most expensive aspect of this game seems like it would have been the acting/voice over/motion capture, which I don’t think would require many blank checks.

    •  2 года назад +64

      No. As pretentious as you may think it is, Kojima has always baked the philosophy of the vicarious weirdness of playing video games into his stories. MGS is packed with this, especially 2 and V. DS is Kojima's ultimate philosophical piece on gaming. Pointless tasks that you love to complete for seemingly no reason other than a fleeting connection you may get with others afterward. It's a snobby art piece. It's absolutely amazing.

      @RockLoi 2 года назад +8

      @@janthran It's seasoning to taste. Some people don't get on with Kojima's heavy-handed exposition (especially when in titles like MGS4 where it's rather extreme).
      Kojima likes presenting story through a series of one-on-one encounters and conversations, and personally I think it's really solid in DS and works well thematically.

    • @thomasp506
      @thomasp506 2 года назад +31

      @@RockLoi I can put up with his exposition, but it's still not good storytelling. The worst part is, though, is that it's not a Kojima thing. Some people shrug it off as just being the way he writes stories. But there's nothing in the least original about this style. It's just the normal way a lot of Japanese video games and anime are written. Mindless, relentless exposition because they're terrified you might miss a tiny and super-important part of their "masterpiece". There's no sense of subtly or priority. Every last minor insignificant detail is vitally important, and you as the player NEED to be told this or their story would be ruined, because apparently there's no chance you could figure it out on your own. In stark contrast to this are Souls games and Bloodborne, the stories and lore of which I find much more compelling because you don't have someone taking you aside and drilling it into you.

      @no info Yeah, but for some stories having no villain can be beneficial, even if it's just to be something different, i won't argue if it's the case with Death Stranding, haven't played it.
      For example, i want to write a fanfic about Fallout, i can include the Brotherhood of Steel if i want, but i can also just use the mutants and radiation to create tension and challenges. If you want you can transform hazards in a character too, some entity that can manipulate some of the things that happen within his universe, and it doesn't need to be a villain or antagonist

    Now that I'm playing it again Death Stranding it's a hard game to explain. In some ways it feels like it was very rushed, and that's even ignoring the stuff about vehicle collision. The balance system really is very weird, I just walk around the entire game holding R2+L2 and I can go pretty much anywhere with no risk of falling over because I am 'balancing'. I get the impression that you are supposed to feel like you are engaged with the process by having to pay attention to your balance, but I can carry huge, huge stacks of cargo on my back which are more than 1 storey tall, but as soon as I try to carry something in one hand, my balance is completely ruined.
    Some people say it's just a boring game about making deliveries, but delivering stuff isn't actually the goal of the game, it's just a means to an end, which is to reconnect the country (as is explained through the story). If you don't care about the story then the game is simply not for you. I think that the story has a lot of interesting ideas, but like Dunkey says, Kojima spends a lot of time OVER explaining these ideas. He has always been inspired by movies and cinema, and it seems like he really wants to take as much advantage of the actors he has hired as possible, and use the mo-cap technology he has access to. At least the stuff like emails and discussions are mostly optional for people who really want to understand the plot better.
    In terms of actual game design, the idea of a solo-multiplayer world where players are connected to each other, but never actually see each other, isn't totally new (this indirect connection is what 'strand type gameplay' basically is). The concept existed with games like Dragon's Dogma, where you could send your 'Pawn' (computer controlled counterpart) to be hired by other players, and they would learn about things they see in other game worlds, and bring that knowledge back with them the next time you log in (how to fight new enemies, use new items, attack combos, etc). That game allowed you to rate the pawn out of 5 stars for things like appearance, usefulness, etc. The pawns made by other players would also inhabit your game world even if you never used them, and walk around towns and the environment - other people made the generic NPCs in your game.
    In Death Stranding, there aren't really many ways to actually engage with other people except for giving likes, leaving shared items, buildings, signs, or choosing to deliver packages left behind by other people. It was written to be thematically relevant, because the game was all about how people seek likes and validation to give their life purpose - without other people to engage with, there isn't as much to do in the game, and there isn't much to do in life. Sometimes you might log in after a while of not playing and discover that a bridge you built has a few thousand likes, and the whole concept is that you did a good thing, and people like you for it. Human connections are a big part of the plot, but we are supposed to appreciate that more by having to rebuild that connection.
    The emails and discussions talk about the concepts like 'the multiverse' and everyone always asks Sam 'How do you manage to get so many deliveries done so fast?' and the hint is that all of the people playing at the same time are collectively working as the same 'Sam' - everyone is working together to help each other complete the same game, and that is a very Kojima thing to have this big concept which is a bit let down a bit by the mechanics (on that note, this is probably why Dunkey couldn't drive a truck over 5 ladders, because they wanted someone to build one bridge that everyone could use - a single tool which requires less maintenance, that everyone can contribute resources to, whereas ladders are temporary and will degrade no matter what. Some bridges built by other people in my game have nearly 1 million likes in 2023).
    The other big, optional project in the game is rebuilding the powered highway in every section. If you take time to work on this it can let you bypass nearly every frustrating obstacle, and keeps your vehicles and equipment battery charged. The same thing applies to creating a zipline network. But like Dunkey pointed out in his original video, you essentially by-pass all of the 'gameplay' (balancing, navigating, fighting/avoiding enemies) to create a super fast network, but this is actually what people do in real life - they try to create the most efficient delivery networks possible to get the best rating. No one is interested in if their delivery person had to walk through wind and rain to make a same day delivery, they're wondering why they didn't send a truck.

You can even use these trays like hovering skateboards to go down slopes or across flat land much faster than usual without wasting stamina (but there is a risk of crashing into things and falling off, which makes BB cry and can damage anything you carry). There are also different exo-skeleton devices like sprint legs, power suits, and all terrain suits. They let you use battery power instead instead of stamina to move faster, carry more without slowing down, and walk up steep slopes and through rough terrain like water and snow without needing to balance.

    For me, the connecting with other players was what made me love the game. So many games that try to integrate multiplayer aspects into single player games does so as adversaries. Dark Souls and the like, where players invade you to impede your progress. This was different though, even though I never saw them I felt like I was helping other players with their journeys while they helped me with mine. because if you place them in MULE and BT areas then maintaining them become harder and with timefall they also decay faster... of course in same areas you can't avoid timefall....
      the key is to not place them in the heavy rain area where the BTs come out, but if you have to place them close to a timefall area then try to find the outer circle where the rain is not so heavy and place it there.... man i love this min maxing stuff.

    i think the strand-type game is where you are always connected to other people. what you build and what other people build exist in your world and every other player’s world all at once, instead of being contained in a dedicated server and even without having to see other players, you still have that connection to them. this makes every player built building a strand between worlds that players inhibit. and i think the motivation for a strand-type game is where you play not for your own benefit, but to make the next guy’s journey less troublesome, and to uphold the structures that connect players.
    it’s actually very refreshing to come across a very difficult terrain to traverse, and seeing that a player had laid down plans to build a highway to make crossing it easier. then i could contribute in making that goal happen, and help not only myself but future players as well. i think this is something totk could have learned from death stranding actually. with the emphasis on building contraptions, being able to share schematics and donate resources to build them will definitely make for a richer community experience. it will still be a singleplayer experience, but you would feel much more connected to the playerbase as you share your own schematics and receive other player’s creative and fun ideas.
    let me elaborate further:
    lets say that you manage to play wow, elder scrolls online, rift, swtor, or any other mmorpg in the 5 minutes where no one is playing in your server or you lag out and players don’t load in properly. that 5 minutes will be just you and npcs, and it will feel just like a singleplayer game and you wouldn’t feel like you’re connected to other players at all.
    a popular franchise that have been doing “strand-type” very well, technically, is the souls series. if you play online but refuse to summon or be summoned, then you’re still connected to other people via their messages, ghosts, bloodstains, and their presets will be used as enemy summons in demon souls, dark souls 2 and 3, and elden ring. when i first played my first souls game and died to the tutorial boss, i actually felt very bad. but as i see the arena littered with bloodstains of people also dying to the same boss, i felt more encouraged to play, which is actually what got me hooked. any time i find something new or dangerous, i leave a message, and that not only helps other players, but it’ll help me as well if other people like my message. as long as you’re playing online, without seeing actual players, you’ll always feel connected to their world, their journeys, and feel more like a collective all on a quest, privy to each other’s triumphs and failures, which is what makes the souls fanbase so strong knitted, but also strand-type in a sense

    I was interested in getting the DC for a while now and got it like half a month ago and I'm loving the game it's basically the only thing I'm playing right now. I do think the story can be slow or bloated at times but I think the concept is interesting and man delivering packages to get cool new gadgets, vehicles and building roads to make deliveries easier is fun as hell. It becomes even more fun when you unlock the zipline and start meticulously planning where you want to place each one to maximize efficiency. I think it's honestly a shame that everyone just took one look at it and wrote it off as bad just because of the premise the game is genuinely great.
