    Bacon, sausages, Ham, Hock, Gammon, Trotters, Loin, Ribs, and a good old Joint of Pork and Crackling or four! What's not to like about Pigs? But in the meantime, of course, they will expose and turn over your land one strip at a time for minimal cost and effort on your part. A very friendly and intelligent creature, much undervalued by most.

    It's amazing how much earth the pigs churn up, and great when confined, but now people can also see how much damage the feral pigs can do to the fragile Australian Bush, and why they are hunted.
    An old Bushie trick is to fold a blade of grass around the fence and listen for the tick.

  • @OleNavy
    @OleNavy 2 года назад +4

    Near the beginning of the video, when you were loading the pigs onto your trailer, one of them tried to go back into its previous location. The fellow tried to stop it with his legs. When the pig felt the legs squeezing its snout, it charged straight ahead. That is a very important behavior to know about. If a pig is hit on the snout, it will charge ahead. I've seen them shocked by the electric fence about their snout, and they charged through the fence. My dad had a sow when I was five years old and he had her penned in with electric fence. She found out what the fence would do to her so she would stay away from it. However, after she gave birth to a litter, she would watch the little guys. If they went up to the fence and squealed, she would back away. But, if they went up to the fence and went under it without getting a shock, she would come up and steamroll the wire, squealing all the way!!! They are fun critters to raise, and very smart!!!

    • @FreeRangeLiving
      @FreeRangeLiving  2 года назад

      Yes we will have a hard pen with hot wire inside the timber for our sows when they farrow. These pigs were trained to electric before we got them which was nice but we make sure to move them often and keep them in tasty food so they don't test the fence much.

    Gidday Pascal and Troy, have raised a few pigs in my time, mainly for the table.
    Here's 4 suggestions.
    1. You know the blue plastic 44gal drums? Cut top to bottom all way around, turned sideways and staked either end and wired to secure it.
    Bullet proof feed trough and little spillage.
    2. A scratching pole. They will love you forever.
    3. Source a unwanted hills playground frame. 3 rails either side, lengthwise, clad in old corrie gal. Toss in a few bales of straw (not hay)and you will find out pretty quickly that they will use it for sleeping and shelter from inclement weather.
    4. Easiest way to get them to settle around you is for you to pat and massage them when they are feeding from the trough. This will make you chuckle, pigs just love a massage.......if you do it right, they will casually lay down and fall asleep at your feet.
    Such a cool experience!
    Don't know what the equivalent is to fair winds from a farming pov but you get my drift.

    • @FreeRangeLiving
      @FreeRangeLiving  2 года назад

      These pigs love a massage now and have learned to flop down for tummy rubs. They get a new 20x50m paddock every 10 days so their furniture needs to be mobile but they do love a scratching post as you say.

    • @neilcarpenter9602
      @neilcarpenter9602 2 года назад

      @@FreeRangeLiving ah......
      Forget to mention that I put 2 wheel barrow wheels on either side on a eccentric cam. Push the cam down and the shed lifts one end, 2 handles at the opposite end and you just simply move it whenever needed. And..........the straw then simply decomposes. I'm sure Troy (mc gyver) will be able to figure out how to do it.
      Cheers to you both.

    That's so awesome !!! I'm a 20 year butcher / pig farmer in Florida ... Get good a building fence .. and look into growing daikon radishes they grow super big and huge have 16 % protein and pigs love digging them up and eat them if they grow like wildfire in the fall cooler months ... Cucumbers and pumpkins are natural dewormers for them and if they're on pasture they poop seeds out and grow plants voluntarily throughout the farm... We have two acres of wild veggies that we pick and foraging from and do nothing too ... Wild bonus ....and the pigs grow some treats for them selves too ....

    • @FreeRangeLiving
      @FreeRangeLiving  2 года назад

      Thanks, we wanted to grow daikon and now we see another great use for it. As soon as winter is past, I will be definitely seeding the ground to cucurbits after the pigs pass and might start feeding them buckwheat. Any other pig/ plant suggestions more than welcome.

    Pigs are quite intelligent animals.
    Decades ago I used to hunt feral pigs on Stations in NSW.
    They are a major problem for pastoralists from the Northern Territory down through Western Queensland via the channel country into New South Wales.
    They are a serious nuisance for reasons such as degradation of pasture and sheep predation particularly during lambing as well as transmission of diseases like brucellosis and tuberculosis.
    The diseases are a very specific problem because in the NT at least cattle are regularly tested for those proscribed diseases and outbreaks can cost station owners substantial sums of money.
    On one occasion while 'dam jumping' three of us surprised a fairly large mob on a tank east of the Tibooburra road during mid-day heat.
    This was normal practice because as you probably know pigs cannot perspire so they usually try to get relief from excessive outback heat by wallowing in nice, squishy mud whenever they can.
    When we thought we had dispatched the bulk of that particular herd we took a break under a large gum tree and I wandered a short distance away to 'water the scenery'.
    At that point I came upon a smallish, adolescent size pig lying upright on it's belly barely concealed behind a log with it's eyes tight shut.
    I called to my companion saying "when did you shoot this pig"?
    He replied "what pig is that"?
    I responded with "the one lying behind this log" and at that exact moment the little pig's eyes flew open and it took off like a top fuel dragster with my extremely committed and tenacious companion in hot pursuit!👀🤣
    That was one of a few particularly memorable occasions when wild animals really surprised me with unexpected demonstrations of intelligence and as a consequence I have long thought it is a shame feral pigs are such destructive brutes.
    Because if it were not for some particularly obnoxious traits like cannibalism and gruesome mutilation of sheep, they might otherwise be likable.

    Hi Troy & Pascale, your pigs certainly make good rotavatation operatives the ground should be great for garden crop’s in a few months. All the best to you both from the UK

    Great looking pigs (and I worked on a pig farm in England ) , they will destroy the ground in your enclosure in very short order and you will probably have to relocate them several times . Dunno how big your ground is , but you're need a lot of it :)

      They move into cells, 20m X 50m for ten days. The main paddock will be divided into 20 paddocks so any patch will have 10 days impact, 190 days growing pasture/food.

    Pigs sure can plow a field quick. A rich Politician in Hawaii once planted about $10k of exotic flowers and thought vandals had attacked his place one day-called the cops-turns out it was wild boars....devastated his property overnight.

    Those pigs do an incredible job. Is that Gallagher electric fencing? It is the best in the business by a long shot, above and beyond any other electric fence maker by a multiple. No doubt.
    Disclaimer: I was sponsored by Gallagher many years ago for a Tasman Sea rowing campaign. Regardless I'd say the same about their product. 🙂
    Double Disclaimer: Gallagher head office is in our home town. Regardless I'd say the same about their product. 🙂

      Nice one guys. Thank you for sharing. My father in law was a dairy farmer who also kept a lot of pigs. Pedigree Landrace. And when I went dairy farming, I just had 2 pigs. One for pork, and one for bacon. He gave me lots of advice on fattening them up..such as don't be tempted to give them milk. Milk is 89-91% water. He was also a pig judge at the A&P Show here in Nz. So I took notice of his advice. He obviously knew more than me. Thanks again for the upload. Take care.

    Well I hung around and have enjoyed the transition. As a full time cruiser I follow mainly sailing channels, but have followed 'Andys Little Homestead' (recommend) for my terra firma fix. keep up the good work but get back to the water to keep your sanity, and maybe work the land in your special bikini and boots. Oh Pascal could wear hers also if she feels left out 😅
