An overall good presentation. A few additions. There were ancient Native American trails ascending Sentinel Plain by the Oatman Massacre site. It is probably Juan Bautista de Anza ascended the plain near these trails as there are Spanish markings on the eastern end of Sentinel Plain. It is doubtful that there was a trail along the south bank of the Gila River at the base of Sentinel Plain as the river path was severely restricted by a steep walled canyon Through this canyon can be seen deep furrowed washes as water rushed through. Any trail would be washed out in short order. Travelers either ascended the mesa or took the alternate ten-mile trail on the north bank of the Gila River which started about at Painted Rock Petroglyph Site and recrossed the river to the south bank a few miles past Sentinel Plain. I have been assisting Dr. Aaron Wright researching this alternate trail. He has found evidence of the trail and has invited me to walk it with him.
Although more research needs to be done for the alternate trail 100-feet south of the Oatman Massacre site as mentioned by the BLM representative, we do have some information about this alternate trail. On present-day Sentinel Plain, on the western border of Oatman Flat, Leach built this alternate trail in February of 1858. This was noted in his hand-written field-notes. It can be identified as it meets the requirements stated in his field-notes. His improvements consisted of widening the trail by rolling back the rocks on some straightaways to 18-feet. On a few of the bends ascending and descending the mesa he widened the bends to 25-feet. In Leach’s report his “Engineer of the Road” N. H. Hutton gave the specifications and reason for these modifications: “I would preface my remarks upon this subject by stating that the road, in excavation and embankment, was constructed with a width of eighteen (18) feet on straight lines, and twenty-five feet on curves, and in all clearings of timber, brush, and rock were opened to a uniform width of twenty-five (25) feet, allowing ample room for the management of ten mule teams, in common use in that country.” This was also done in the broad canyon on the plain about three miles west.

flat out bar none the best information I have seen on the subject as far as the trails I as Olive Oatman researcher not really researcher to address each trail. barely to the south of massacre that is in fact Butterfield ascending. The butterfield decending is not much further over but its there.
The deazna trail did go up Oatman trail and went across which is fully visible
My interest in the area was to solve the route to the first camp of captivity which I did. The various trails I only became associated with in research.
on the other side of the oatman flats is an astonishing area of Mormon battalion which is never noted in video nor photos except what I have uploaded. rock walls etc.

everything after Oatman I had in it that is why I could never get much into Farr and the cemetery because I did not consider it relevant that is also why I never had an interest in butterfield except was I ran into the info. Directly over south of massacre is butterfield acending and further over is butterfield decending which is in a perfectly straight line and almost impossible to spot if not there in person. however just walking over from massacre and beyond butterfield ascending is an astonishing huge indian ring dating back not less than ten thousand years. The butterfield stuff was short lived I had zero interest in those up and down ramps

no need to check with "blm representative" my friend that is simply butterfield ascending as is well known and was barely used. on that side the butterfield decending is MUCH HARDER to spot but its there. it is a perfectly straight line all washed out.

If anyone wants to know what really happened, read "The Blue Tattoo" by Margot Mifflin, which is the most accurate rendition of this event.
The first book, by Royal Stratton, is full of mid century sensationalism designed to sell the book.

@@octatrails My mother was born an Oatman so it has always been in my history. We own an original "Captivity of the Oatman Girls" by Royal Stratton from the 1850's. He wrote the book reflecting the values and prejudices of the time and took Olive on speaking tours which helped pay for her and Lorenzo's education. "The Blue Tattoo" was written from actual historical documents with no cultural bias. Olive and Lorenzo were my 2nd cousins 4 times removed. I always wanted to visit the site but never got around to it.
      Thanks for the presentation.

I find it interesting that you use such soft language. The Oatman party was massacred. Olive was enslaved. These were brutal times. Brutality from both opposing sides. Quit trying to be pc. It's a shame that some historians are trying to revise our history with this watered down version and trying to paint Indians as total victims...

Watering down history is forced on many historians and teachers. Just look at Florida.

Excellent comment. To the female guide ...Look up the term "indiginous." These INDIANS were not indiginous !. They migrated and fought other tribes for land ! You are so afraid of offending some government secretary. Please dont have her anymore
