Tales From the Trail Part 3: Conclusion
Very well executed video. The aerial shots add so much to the narration.
Can only imagine the arduous journey these Pioneers undertook with the physical suffering that comes with walking the entire 2000 miles within an understood timeframe. If their shoes wore out they would be strapping tree bark to the soles of their feet. Moccasins from the Indians might have been an option and they also had to keep an eye on their horses shoes and oxen shoes. That sure is a lot of strides.
Nicely done, and good to see recent video of both the Courthouse & Jail, and of Chimney Rock. I've visited at least a dozen times.
This is my 4th great grandmother. ❤ I am here because of her immeasurable bravery. ❤
This is my 4th great grandmother also! 😲
What happened to the other half the wagon train that split off? Wish he would have explained that as well. Left me wondering. Bidwell Manion in Chico just burned down two nights ago. 3 story, 26 room Victornia mansion. I live in Oroville, 15 minutes from there, for the last 4 years. Always wanted to tour that mansion and Bidwell park, that surrounds it. The first started around 3 am, and it has been raining here a lot, so apparently it was arson, probably by drug addict homeless that live all around here in Oroville and in the Bidwell park area. Shame. Thanks for posting this video.
Great presentation, packed full of content. Life is not fair, natives and settlers battled it out back then. So many tragic stories and events. I feel for the natives and settlers. The natives definitely received the short end of every deal.
Thank you for sharing this story!
This is very well done, and full of good information for people new to the topic. I was there in June of 1975, when most of the infrastructure (fences, gates, monument, visitor center) didn't exist. The meadow where the Wagon Box Fight took place was, in the spring of 1975, very different from what's in the video. 1975 was a wet year, and that meadow was spectacular in June - covered with wildflowers. Now that I've seen this video, I admit I'm inspired. It's a place I'd like to go back to in order to take advantage of what's been done in the decades since my last visit, and I'm impressed by the ranger's telling of the tale - she didn't just present the white man's side of the story.
THANKS!
I visited Fetterman site etc in June 2023 from the UK ( also visited the Battle of the Little Bighorn sites during that period ) I was surprised how few people there were visiting Fetterman just a handful and there was nobody at the Wagon Box site , compared to the much busier Little Bighorn area. Also you get the feel that the landscape which is has some fantastic views has not changed perhaps that much over the intervening years , well worth a visit and if you are visiting from outside the US then also visit Little Bighorn which from memory was about 2 hrs drive away.
Be honest with yourself......we totally committed genocide on a race of humans that had no chance against the white mans superior advanced weaponry ,etc. It was inevitable but don't say there were good people on both sides. You have only one point of view. Thanks for the interesting story though. I am as white as they get by the way. The Indian story is one of the truly saddest in history
There are good people everywhere, same as there are bad people everything. Thank you for engaging with the channel.
It's crazy how the will to survive was so strong in people in a place and time so rife with death
Rough

Thank you, very interesting story.
Thanks for sharing this story! This kind of deeper dive into an obscure event brings the gritty portions of that era to life.

Beaver hats were waterproof.
I finally did a bucket list item this past June 2024 and drove out along the trail to Parting of the Ways. I had my bike since I had seen spots were too rough to drive in my Crosstrek Sport. What I didn't realize, that you mentioned, was that the ruts were very deep and filled with sand; hence the bike. I managed to drive within a 1/2 mile of South Pass and then rode my bike there. Later I tried driving to Parting of the Ways but after 3/4 mile the ruts were too deep for my car, so I tried biking but the loose sand in the ruts was 6-8" deep. So I gave up. Will return with a Jeep in the future.
@@stevetalkstoomuch glad you're getting out and discovering the trail!
You look to be in pretty decent nick for an old, graying guy. I’ll bet you grew up with access to lots of activities, like a pool under your house and awesome neighbors to play tree golf with…speaking of, I think I still owe you around $82 in losses. Nice video, sir. 😉
These three Bozeman Trail videos are all very well done. I have visited all of these areas over the years, some many times, but this still helps me better understand the area and what happened there so many years ago.
@marklettow6610 glad you enjoyed both the videos and the sites!

I wish you would of showed the rifle more.
The subject sounds interesting. Unfortunately the audio was muffled and I had a difficult time understanding you. I turned this off.
The technical difficulties were a bummer. Fortunately, it is such a great story that we will be making a better video about Marie next year.
Fantastic information. Can't wait til it "kicks off!"
I've looked all over YT to find videos like this - why, oh why - am I just discovering this now?
Interesting, well presented story. Greetings from Germany ❤
The IHC Auto Buggy had rubber on the wheels from new, It's even in the original advertisements for it. I've never heard of one having steel, especially on a driven wheel as there would never be any traction.
That they did. I got my notes wrong & misspoke when making the video
Well done, and very interesting. This is near my old stomping grounds. I lived in Loveland for 5 years, and made numerous trips to and around Livermore. Too bad this wasn't being done (or at least I didn't know anything like this was being done) in the early 2000s, when I lived nearby.
Thanks, Ray, for your kind comments. Yes, the chapter itself was formed in the late 1980's, but stop functioning for a while until it was resurrected in 2005. The Chapter will be hosting the national OCTA convention in Pueblo, Colorado in September 2025, come check us out!
When I was in junior high school (around 1968-69), Mrs. Dawson, an English teacher at Bear River Jr. High (who I think is still alive and living in Wheatland), organized the local Boy Scouts to perform a memorial ceremony every Veterans Day at the Camp Far West cemetery. I participated in several of them, which has always been an integral part of my Scouting service.
@jimhardee5779 kudos to Mrs Dawson for the idea and organizing it. Kudos to you for your participation. Tell me, do the Boy Scouts still perform this honor?
@@michaelberger8137 Oh gosh! I have no idea. That was over 50 years ago! I have no idea.
One of the most intriguing places I'm preoccupied with lately. I'm a native Californian from this area. After learning more of The California trail, the Donner party and the likes from documentaries and diaries and such, I've become increasingly interested in this place and why it is so elusive and mysterious to the general public. I know it is private property, but I wish there were more accessibility to the place. But maybe it's better to keep it a mystery. I don't know.
It's an American car museum with a French name
Who was also hosting a Japanese car exhibit. The French fur traders were in the PNW long before anyone calling themselves American lived in the area.
💪
Aww, most trails were established by wild animals only to adopted later by humans.
Wagons are not going up those trails.
They not only went over trails like this, they were also pulled up and down cliff faces.
THANK YOU. I'd been looking for this answer and was glad to hear your explanation!
@MrTycobb25 glad this helped!
My stepfather was a Bruff relative. J. G. Bruff was his great grandmother's brother. The Bruff's Wake book is very good.
@@plakor6133 we're glad you liked the book. We're big fans as well!
I would love to hear more about the Sheldon connection. Was that canal related to the dam he built that lead to his murder? Is that why Slough house is named Slough house? Thanks for sharing.
is it possible to walk/bike the PCT, under I15, and cross through or along the railroad property and reach Cajon Blvd? My goal is to eventually reach the San Gabriel Mission from Abiquiu, NM by following areas near The Old Spanish Trail.
Well, that was just a swale presentation. Thanks! 😊😊💙💙
All those people who went to California from Colorado didn't realize there were more gold deposits there than where they were going.
But less then 10 years later, there was another surge on the Cherokee Trail of travelers, this time for gold seekers for the Colorado, Montana, and Idaho gold rushes. Some even traveled back from California to participate and seek their riches.
I wonder how many wagon wheels broke on that part of the trail. Looks tough.
We have evidence all along the Cherokee and Overland Trails of temporary blacksmith and wheelwright shops built next to the trail to service the wagons, just like modern day tire shops or service stations. Honestly, I never drive my car down the Devil's Washboard because it is so rough which says a lot about the gumption of stage and wagon travelers back in the day!
Beautiful land loved the birds chirping in the background
Is this family related to the Bridgers in Jamestown colony?
Very cool stuff! Am I correct that there used to be (maybe still is?) wagon ruts of the Overland trail off of north Shields in FoCo? I thought I could make them out years ago but haven't looked lately.
The wagon ruts largely parallel highway 287, but to the west. In Fort Collins that is west of Taft Hill Road in the south and west of Overland as you proceed north until you get to LaPorte where there is a DAR monument near where the LaPorte Overland Stage Station once existed. Then it follows county 54G until it joins 287 up by Ted's Place. The trail is west of 287 on the other side of the first hogback to the west heading due north as it proceeds up through Livermore, around Grayback Ridge and then up through Virginia Dale Station. The 1849 original route did parallel the north bank of the Cache la Poudre from the confluence with the South Platte until it joined the 1850 route in LaPorte. This route was only used the first year, the shorter route up through Fort Collins was used after that. Hope that helps! There are more detailed presentations on the Colorado/Overland routes through Larimer County if you look under PlayLists/Colorado Cherokee on the OCTA RUclips page. There you can find a wealth of short videos and also longer presentations on the trails and OCTA's findings in northern Colorado.
@@octatrails Thanks a lot! I appreciate the information.
After watching your other video on this subject, I had to take to Google maps and scout about (virtually) myself. It is mind-boggling to see all the trails and to imagine all the humanity and goings-on about the place. It makes it real. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
And to add to that, the fact that many of the trail ruts still exist today, some 160 years later! I am happy this made it real for you!
@octatrails I've used satellite images to look for and seek out many Oregon trail ruts and swales in the State of Oregon. Many of which were unmarked. I would like to develop some kind of "overlay" component to Google maps that one could add to their toolbox to help enhance their experience.
