I'm so glad that people are naming these companies. It's getting RIDICULOUS how unprofessional they're getting. We really have to start putting their names out there. I once had a 5 ROUND INTERVIEW (I'm in finance, some zoom interviews), then after the 5th round (which was in person), got ghosted. 😑

Something really similar happened to me. I interviewed for an internship and got a verbal offer. I went through the entire hiring process: background check, physical exam, picking up equipment, etc. Then, the business day before I was supposed to start, I got an email saying my offer was rescinded due to budget considerations, but they told me I'd be prioritized for the next season.
To top it off, I got an email the following week (while failing my Roblox OA) saying they'd found a new team for me and were ready to extend the offer again. All I had to do was wait for Monday orientation. Then, on Friday, the same thing happened… I got a call saying the new department's budget had been cut, and they were rescinding my offer again. They really doubled down on the trauma.

The recruiter kept insisting, so I decided to go through the process. They kept extending the number of interviews. Eventually, I got an offer and that weekend I was told they need to call me on Monday. They told me they decided to rescind my offer due to not being able to onboard well because of covid. These kind of stories are so disheartening and I’m so sorry you had to experience this. It’s a sign of how broken the modern recruiting and hiring process is. I understand the frustration. But that's completely normal.
They likely had an approved budget specifically for an L4 role. If they hired someone overqualified, that person might receive an offer for an L5 position with higher pay from another company within a few months. Since they won’t be able to get approval for a salary raise that quickly to provide a counter-offer, the person may leave, forcing them to restart the hiring process.

    Namanh,
Just be careful when you make videos like this.
Tech companies scare easily. They offer alot of luxuries but they are full of people who are easily impacted and offended.
It's where recruiters psychoanalyze feedback and mutate it into "not a good culture fit" because they're hypersensitive.
An ASANA recruiter watching this might want to "share their thoughts" with other recruiters about yourself.
Just something I noticed based on anecdotes I heard from other engineers
Oh and being rejected for being too good ---> Now that's a fucking travesty. Look at how this world operates.

Asana is not worth that interview process. What in the world. Sorry you went through that.
I'm 15 years in and I've encountered the "too experienced" thing several times, starting fairly early in my career.
I've also watched hiring processes I've participated in go totally ass-backwards because people on the team don't want the best person for the role, but the best person according to their preferences and insecurities. It sounds silly, but people do amazing mental gymnastics to convince themselves that someone AMAZING for the role isn't quite the right "cultural fit".
I'm all for cultural fit. But the existing team shouldn't possess sole discretion to determine what that culture is, because you wind up with a stagnating, B-or-C-tier, monocrop team of mediocrity that can't handle working with people who don't make them feel great (or worse, intimidate them). Weird stuff.

Hey, silver lining - at least they told you that you're basically a senior dev, so in the future when you're applying to other roles you can apply to the more senior ones knowing that you're good enough, and demand the equivalent salary. Actually kind of wholesome cause most employers would LOVE for you to think you're worse than you actually are so they can pay you less. It does suck that they would pass up on a great candidate (just make an extra position if you find someone that's that good!) but outside of that, I feel like they did you a bit of favor with that.

  • @blenderrender410
    @blenderrender410 26 дней назад +2

I think this ''weird situation" is pretty common in the workplace
    They call it "over-qualified"
They are not seeking for the job, instead, they're finding someone who's ok for this job
And your abilities surpassed their expectations and in fact
over-qualification is the insecurity for those seniors (In most case the good workers would seek for another role within a short period of time)
they don't want someone who are too good for the role
If there's a spectrum of 1-100, they're looking for someone who is like 65-75 and a bit higher
In simple words, they don't want someone who's good, because they assume that the good ones would leave the company very quick
And that's their evaluation for the risk of employing the great candidates, and most of the employers or seniors still take this standard as a guide

    • @namanhkapur

@@namanhkapur Your case is like common, but I'd say you told too much to your employers during your interview
So I'd say try not to stand out too much in the interview
Not always, but the scale of the company usually tells, find some reviews of that companies also would help you to evaluate their attitude towards their orientation of candidates choosing
(of course you should know a bit about the company before you go to their invitations)
To someone who are not too clear about the job market
Possessing a master degree after a bachelor degree is common,
but they also prefer someone with more job experience instead of academic papers
That's why we sometimes see a PhD candidates don't get a job interview
You either hide your highest degree record,
or go to a really great company for an interview. Don't see an in between.

I had a similar experience with a top product based ecom companies in India.
Completed 5 rounds of technical interview and then 1 HR round, Then salary discussion. And then documents were shared. Then the HR ghosted me for 3 weeks and finally after my multiple phone calls , informed that offer is on hold due to organisation restructuring. 🤷 Painful to wait for 1 month, just to hear this.

You be surprised this happens all the time you not the only one... 7 years ago this happened to me at a company I interviewed at an it was a mid level dev position but because they said I was at a senior level I couldn't get the mid level position.... and I'm like bro it's ok it's a $10,000 difference I don't care and they were like "No we usually like to pay our developers according to their level".... I'm like SMFH

whole video just seemed so stressful, doesn't it bother you that there's that many steps? I get that the pay and benefits are great...but it's like they make you turn into a hamster in a rube goldberg machine to get all of that, and in the end there might not even be a reward that was promised, kinda like how they took the offer away from you.

Get into something like healthcare cancer or some corner of financial /quant engineering to differentiate yourself. Otherwise u r competing with literally everyone that can code worldwide

Question. I want to be like you in the future. I’m currently a junior engineer trying to make Yt videos, but also looking for another role. You have a successful channel, ie a user base of dedicated potential customers who WANT to support you, and obviously you have the engineering talent. Why not make your own product? You can build in public, receive detailed feedback, and also never have to deal with this bs. Plus imo way more fun. I would assume you generate enough money from this channel to do that? Plus you got the location

No matter how bad your situation is, I'd say some people are still worse off. God, I would love to have your skill as a software engineer, so I can already build my startups but being poor and not a software engineer, I can't build them. Even submitting an idea to incubator is not acceptable today, i need at least an MVP. I would really prefer that you just build your own startup, you don't need these companies. I wish you to have your own successful company instead.

Ahh the classic NYC attrition risk, Asana knew you were definitely overqualified and the city has too much opportunity for you to find a better job with better pay. If you took a lower position , you will probably jump ship before you actually make an impact in the company.

But such a big company, if they think you're L5, they can just easily pay you L5 salary. wtf lol
