Yes, there is zero protection from losing a job in the US. Usually you will be paid a few weeks of pay, then rely on unemployment pay - which can be between 5% and 50% of your previous pay (depending on state and salary). That will last 6 months. You have to always be ready to lose a job in the US. I update a piece of paper in my house every month. It details my savings, and what my current company will give me if I get laid off tomorrow (4 weeks pay). I use this to write a date of when I would absolutely need a job again.

I know the cost of living is higher in big cities but "Data scientist marketing" starts at 152K .... whoa. The tech sector is very competitive, you need to constantly learn and make yourself invaluable to the team. Work life balance does not exist for the top tier - you need to add huge value everyday to ensure your position is secure.

While you can't get a job for months and months, sometimes indefinitely, as you compete with tens and sometimes hundreds of other applicants. This is why job security is the most important thing, make sure you get into a job/industry that has good job security and value it over everything else, whether it be salary, vacation, etc.
Just got laid off too. I did data analysis previously for a hospital, but left the field. Look into litigation support: very similar skillset and lawyers are always busy.

I've seen jobs paying what you can make at Home Depot, except they require 5+ years of relevant experience and a college education and the stress that goes with it. Same thing happened to me....expected a promotion.....except the new investors came in and my product wasn't profitable. They didn't even consider placing me somewhere else or the business knowledge that I had. Just a decision.... Just two weeks prior a minor medical procedure landed me in the emergency room and a 30k bill. I owe 3300 on that one and some other bills for people I never met or somehow not related to the 30k are rolling in as well. I never wish ill will towards someone, but I can only hope something similar happens to them and perhaps it might humble them and then they may have empathy towards others. I see you live in the Boca/West Palm area. I'm about a half hour north of you. Lots of businesses down your way (Deerfield). Best of luck to you.
