Make sure you grab the tapes out of radios that are playing good 80s tune's you dont have yet , so when you upgrade your iDroid its an early available cheap upgrade so you probably already done it ..... Oh! P.S btw you can upgrade your chopper so it can play your tapes , or music already stored by default like my fav for chopper attack support "Ride of the valkyries" from 'Apocalypse Now' chopper scene .

DJ.HITLER peacewalker was a really great game too. Making that metal gear in pw was awesome. This one basically builds on so many things from previous game.
A bit late, but should be pointed out that the fulton recovery system was teased as early as mgs3, albeit it became a gameplay mechanic with Peacewalker.

Seven years later and it’s one of the most replayable in and out style of games I’ve ever played. I guarantee you could play it right now and enjoy yourself more than 99 percent of other games this past 7 years.
i love how everyone online seems to just hate every game now. mgs 5, FO4, arkham knight. everyone seems to play with a lot more scrutiny than i can be bothered to maintain. If its fun its fun.

The mother base's long connctors are justified so that in case of enemy attack, it can be contained in just one platform Although i prefer the chopper to fly straight

OnlyRoke I'm not entirely sure it may possibly effect the rating, but alot of the negative points of this game are skipped over because people are too blinded and drooling over this game, like a big one is the open world is not as open as people think half the stuff you see you can't go on, the world is lifeless and dead you have a few animals but no civilians or anything like that to bring the world to life and the stupid opening where snake is lying on the floor with another guy with the dead bodies clearly sticking out like a sore thumb and the only body on the floor that doesn't get an Extra bullet in the head I mean come on, people praise the Ai yet I've seen snake a few feet away from an enemy and doesn't get seen
Izicial it might actually be an artificial fire, if you find intel, you use the idroid to copy the intel and you see the paper you're scanning start to smoke. Might just be for added design tho.

You simply grab that invoice, use your cardboard box and "send" yourself to the other settlements. You need to gather the invoices from the other settlements too, though.

I had to wait 6 years to get a decent computer that can run this game. Metal Gear is my favorite franchise and this is by far the most fun to play. I think MSG2 is more of a masterpiece considering the year it was released and its story, but MSG5 is all the fun you can ask for, and incredibly well designed.

Traded this bad boy in, way to repetitive, but thats my opinion. Sure its a great game, but after what mission 27 or so, its just the same missions over and over but on harder difficulties. The "open world" part is just a filler for the boring side ops missons. Go here and kill/extract said solider, reminds me of GTA missions.

I think you're being very gentle with your criticism, Joe. I disagree that there's just "a bit" of story missing, that the game is just "slightly" repetitive. Throughout my playthrough I felt like this was an exercise in grinding and repetition, with tiny story snippets sprinkled in between (similar) missions. There's no argument that the gameplay is great (though even then I feel that the game doesn't really encourage every style of playthrough, but instead mainly a non-lethal approach due to Mother Base, and your demon points), but every other part of MGSV is just so damn disappointing, I find. There are games that are bigger than the sum of their parts, while MGSV has just one part. Main missions here feel like side missions of other games, in terms of the story content in them. Side ops are just doing the same thing over and over and over and over ad nauseam, and honestly, infiltrating the same base for the 8th time is frustrating. I don't remember such reuse of maps since DA2. That's crazy. Chapter 2 is, once more, repeating the same things, in the same maps, just with higher difficulty - while the story parts you receive seem to drop on you out of nowhere. The structure in this game is terrible and feels random most of the time. When you do receive some story content, your protagonist stays so silent you start to worry he has some mental disability. I also don't see how this can be considered a great "open world" game. There isn't much interesting about the map design. Afghanistan funnels you down relatively narrow roads, there isn't anyone out there other than enemies, you don't feel a war is going on, there's not much to explore for. The world feels dead, and as if it exists only for your missions. I think it would have benefited much more by being separate levels in the style of Camp Omega. Sure, some missions require a large space (such as the ones with the convoys), but you don't need to base your entire game on an open world just for those few. It's funny. I have 83 hours spent with Venom Snake (I'm compulsive like that - I have to finish games I start), and out of them I'll probably remember and take away with me only 1. Which consists of two missions - the prologue, and the special quarantine one later in the game. These missions won't be easy to forget. And these missions are ones that have nothing to do with the open world or the massive freedom of gameplay MGSV is being praised for. It's not that they stand out just because they're the exception in the game, it's that they stand out because they manage to be more tense and dramatic and touching than any other part. I feel that "linearity" has become some cuss word in recent years, and I don't get it. I realize that different gamers have different preferences. That's fine, that's cool. But even so, even if someone prefers solely gameplay over everything else, I'm still baffled how people don't think the other aspects of MGSV don't deserve much harsher criticism. I can't shake off the feeling that if this wasn't a Hideo Kojima game and didn't have MGS to its title, people would have been much more critical of every other category and the /overall/ experience, that I find lacking. And that's the thing with me. I did have fun, but the /overall/ experience was just lackluster at the end of the day. I'll forget it as soon as I put it down. And it's possible that me being more severe with my criticism is just a counter-reaction to all the accolades it's been receiving. Perhaps I'm the one being irrational here. But I'm just a random internet guy who doesn't like something you do. Flame and suggestions to go fuck myself incoming in 3... 2...

I recently picked this up(I know I'm late) and I am VERY much enjoying this. Like so much. I LOVE it and I would recommend it and I only played mgs 4 and just a little bit of it but still understand the concept.
I just beat it for the first time like a month ago. Never liked any Metal Gear but I absolutely loved the gameplay. The story kind of sucked tho but i still give it a 100% awesome rating.
Glad you enjoyed but as a fan of the entire series this one is ultimately a let down. It however raised my opinion of MGS4 which gameplay wise executed a more war like atmosphere.
Metal Gear Solid's optimization is... How would I put this...FLAWLESS....I couldn't tell the difference between High and Ultra High yet 40 FPS to 60 FPS made me shutter in joy.Saying that I could barely run Fallout 4 on Medium and we know what the textures ;-;.
Also how it runs a perfect 60 fps on both consoles and still looks pretty much the same. They need to be commended for their optimization. It shows how lazy most other devs can be.

I know im way late to this video, but something I wanted to add that is amazing about this game: the enemies around both maps ADAPT to your playstyle and try to COUNTER your playstyle. You like to stay behind on hill and snipe everyone? Enemies will start wearing more helmets. Like to go in Rambo style and shoot everyone with a shotgun? Enemies will start to wear more armor (not counting the actual already armored enemies). You like to go in at night time every time? They are going to have more light posts on, and everyone is going to have a flash light and even some start to wear night vision goggles. Like to bring in your chopper often to kill everyone? They will start putting up more anti-air defenses. Makes you switch out your playstyle. And I bought this for 5 dollars during the play-station summer sale. FIVE dollars. I'm only literally half way through the game, both half side ops and half main missions, and im already at 130 hours played. And STILL discovering new things, mechanics, guns, play styles, etc. It's awesome.
I agreed @angryJoe that if konami would have let Kojima spend more time making the game rather than being rushed to push the game out as quickly as possible.. it would have make gameplay maybe even better than what it already is, i don't think it will help story much because it's already pretty weak with begin with.. but the game would have felt more complete overall.. especially in chapter 2.. goes to show Kojima worked for the wrong company

people always talk about female empowerment, and how women can wear whatever they want. they talk and talk about how great badass independent female characters are. they talk about how hiding your body and being ashamed of it is bad. But God forbid a a character that almost symbolizes a badass empowered woman wear what she wants when she has a good body. What is weird though, is that Konami said they will continue the franchise but just this week they made it official that they will no longer be making console games aside from some Soccer series. I’m gonna be completely honest, quiet is my favourite character, not for her looks but just the sheer fact that you basically no longer need a sniper because she is amazing with one, also if you’re spotted she will snipe the enemy that spotted you, so far better if you’re trying to be stealthy as well

There is no doubt Quiet's character was oversexualized (they could've toned that down a bit, it was kind of annoying) but I didn't find her boring. I thought she was pretty badass, mostly because of the cutscene when she shoots the pilot of a jet.
Lasaga Cat Yes the scenes were way to sexualized, but at least they tried to give a reason behind her revealing nature when other games just make their female character over the top for no reason. Is there any logic to having a near nude female character, then have higher tiers of armor that expose more skin than without armor(Some MMO's)? There is an alternative armor for Quiet in the game that acts a normal jumpsuit (XOF Suit or something), covering a majority of her body, yes the scenes could've been reworked and Quiet could've had more clothes to make it less sexualized, but it honestly wouldn't have made a difference as any amount of skin that isn't her arms or neck would've been hammered by people anyway. I kind of like Quiet as a character, but I can agree that the character is way oversexualized and more could've been done to combat that, but one can't judge the game based off a characters appearance, Quiet is a nice addition to the game that has her uses in multiple fields and her own little backstory. Plus, who doesn't love the occasional sexy character in a game? The game plays nice with and without her as your buddy, as having her as a buddy is completely optional. Whenever you do have her as a buddy on a mission you rarely see her anyway as she zooms across the map or sits on a distant rock face sniping hostiles. In fact I found myself uncaring for any conversation between my character and Quiet, even to the point I forgot she was with me on some missions. The point being she is hardly visible during any mission you may be conducting, she's a great tactical addition to the game, and she hardly talks. As you progress the campaign more than yeah, I can see how she might become annoying as hell or even cringe worthy to watch in certain animations. Yet still, there are alternatives to her, and if you prefer to have Quiet as a buddy than there are customization options that provide skin covering options, at least past the first chapter.

I normally agree with Joe but I disagree with saying Quiet is just fanservice. I agree that there are a lot of scenes that are flat out creepy and the excuse of breathing through her skin to stay naked is pretty damn weak. Yet, by the end of the game I got attached to her. She was a good character in her own right. Don't know if he finished her character arc but there's definitely more to Quiet than the blatant fanservice on the surface.

So my theory would be like this: Kojima need a fan service so he created quiet, then after that he started to create the backstory/reason and all to justify quiet's appereance. Well, in the end it became a good character, thanks to kojima's writing. Thats how i love the writing of metal gear solid or witcher or fallout. They can put something that shouldn't be there but still complement the main story. If the writing try too hard on every side they will become too pretentious (Like Mass effect or dragon age)

The end of her character arc, which was bitter sweet, is one of my favorite in the series. Reminded me of MGS 3 ending.
I never complained in the past about long cutscenes w/e and Im saying this as a real MGS fan who has played every single MGS game except peacewalker. MGS5 is a HUGE letdown, when I started playing MGS5 prologue I was like WOW - blown away how amazing it was and I was thinking MGS5 is gonna be one of the best games ever made, but after the prologue what happened? REPETITIVE missions all day long in an empty world. MGS5 feels so soulless :(
EP 1 had like 4 or 5 plot related missions out of 30 while EP2 had only two out of 20 which were both fucking trash. Seriously, did we just wake up from a 9 year old coma, fight a ghost rider while high on some drug right after being awoken from that coma, fucking fight off some skulls, defeat Sahalanthropus, extract revenge on Skullface only to have venom snake pass out from being bitten by a FUCKING SNAKE!?

I waited until 2019 to get this game and play it, i got the Definitive Edition for $20 at gamestop for PS4, and now in 2021 I got it again for Xbox One. This game is fucking amazing.

It's so frustrating that konami didn't let kojima finish, just imagine if kojima transferred the story from the cassette tapes into the game, would've been everything I ever wanted from a video game. The gameplay is superb, but the story is non existent.
The story was non-existent on purpose by Kojima. That's what he wanted to accomplish with the title "Phantom Pain" and cause all this mixed feelings of rage, anger and disappointment, even if he had to disappoint the fans... In other words Kojima really played the fans like a damn fiddle with every misleading trailer and fake marketing. And all this was done on purpose! As for the cutscenes, he replaced them with cassete tapes because of the complaints from the fans about the length. A new perspective where you can listen to the background story while playing the game...

MGSV, to this day, has one of the best "sandbox playgrounds" in all of gaming. Specifically, the enemy AI makes it truly enjoyable to play around in.

DJ.HITLER peacewalker was a really great game too. Making that metal gear in pw was awesome. This one basically builds on so many things from previous game.
A bit late, but should be pointed out that the fulton recovery system was teased as early as mgs3, albeit it became a gameplay mechanic with Peacewalker.

OnlyRoke I'm not entirely sure it may possibly effect the rating, but alot of the negative points of this game are skipped over because people are too blinded and drooling over this game, like a big one is the open world is not as open as people think half the stuff you see you can't go on, the world is lifeless and dead you have a few animals but no civilians or anything like that to bring the world to life and the stupid opening where snake is lying on the floor with another guy with the dead bodies clearly sticking out like a sore thumb and the only body on the floor that doesn't get an Extra bullet in the head I mean come on, people praise the Ai yet I've seen snake a few feet away from an enemy and doesn't get seen

Izicial it might actually be an artificial fire, if you find intel, you use the idroid to copy the intel and you see the paper you're scanning start to smoke. Might just be for added design tho.

I had to wait 6 years to get a decent computer that can run this game. Metal Gear is my favorite franchise and this is by far the most fun to play. I think MSG2 is more of a masterpiece considering the year it was released and its story, but MSG5 is all the fun you can ask for, and incredibly well designed.

Traded this bad boy in, way to repetitive, but thats my opinion. Sure its a great game, but after what mission 27 or so, its just the same missions over and over but on harder difficulties. The "open world" part is just a filler for the boring side ops missons. Go here and kill/extract said solider, reminds me of GTA missions.

I think you're being very gentle with your criticism, Joe. I disagree that there's just "a bit" of story missing, that the game is just "slightly" repetitive. Throughout my playthrough I felt like this was an exercise in grinding and repetition, with tiny story snippets sprinkled in between (similar) missions. There's no argument that the gameplay is great (though even then I feel that the game doesn't really encourage every style of playthrough, but instead mainly a non-lethal approach due to Mother Base, and your demon points), but every other part of MGSV is just so damn disappointing, I find. There are games that are bigger than the sum of their parts, while MGSV has just one part.
Main missions here feel like side missions of other games, in terms of the story content in them. Side ops are just doing the same thing over and over and over and over ad nauseam, and honestly, infiltrating the same base for the 8th time is frustrating. I don't remember such reuse of maps since DA2. That's crazy. Chapter 2 is, once more, repeating the same things, in the same maps, just with higher difficulty - while the story parts you receive seem to drop on you out of nowhere. The structure in this game is terrible and feels random most of the time. When you do receive some story content, your protagonist stays so silent you start to worry he has some mental disability.
I also don't see how this can be considered a great "open world" game. There isn't much interesting about the map design. Afghanistan funnels you down relatively narrow roads, there isn't anyone out there other than enemies, you don't feel a war is going on, there's not much to explore for. The world feels dead, and as if it exists only for your missions. I think it would have benefited much more by being separate levels in the style of Camp Omega. Sure, some missions require a large space (such as the ones with the convoys), but you don't need to base your entire game on an open world just for those few.
It's funny. I have 83 hours spent with Venom Snake (I'm compulsive like that - I have to finish games I start), and out of them I'll probably remember and take away with me only 1. Which consists of two missions - the prologue, and the special quarantine one later in the game. These missions won't be easy to forget. And these missions are ones that have nothing to do with the open world or the massive freedom of gameplay MGSV is being praised for. It's not that they stand out just because they're the exception in the game, it's that they stand out because they manage to be more tense and dramatic and touching than any other part. I feel that "linearity" has become some cuss word in recent years, and I don't get it.
I realize that different gamers have different preferences. That's fine, that's cool. But even so, even if someone prefers solely gameplay over everything else, I'm still baffled how people don't think the other aspects of MGSV don't deserve much harsher criticism. I can't shake off the feeling that if this wasn't a Hideo Kojima game and didn't have MGS to its title, people would have been much more critical of every other category and the /overall/ experience, that I find lacking. And that's the thing with me. I did have fun, but the /overall/ experience was just lackluster at the end of the day. I'll forget it as soon as I put it down. And it's possible that me being more severe with my criticism is just a counter-reaction to all the accolades it's been receiving. Perhaps I'm the one being irrational here.

I recently picked this up(I know I'm late) and I am VERY much enjoying this. Like so much. I LOVE it and I would recommend it and I only played mgs 4 and just a little bit of it but still understand the concept.
I just beat it for the first time like a month ago. Never liked any Metal Gear but I absolutely loved the gameplay. The story kind of sucked tho but i still give it a 100% awesome rating.

Metal Gear Solid's optimization is... How would I put this...FLAWLESS....I couldn't tell the difference between High and Ultra High yet 40 FPS to 60 FPS made me shutter in joy.Saying that I could barely run Fallout 4 on Medium and we know what the textures ;-;.
Also how it runs a perfect 60 fps on both consoles and still looks pretty much the same. They need to be commended for their optimization. It shows how lazy most other devs can be.

I know im way late to this video, but something I wanted to add that is amazing about this game: the enemies around both maps ADAPT to your playstyle and try to COUNTER your playstyle. You like to stay behind on hill and snipe everyone? Enemies will start wearing more helmets. Like to go in Rambo style and shoot everyone with a shotgun? Enemies will start to wear more armor (not counting the actual already armored enemies). You like to go in at night time every time? They are going to have more light posts on, and everyone is going to have a flash light and even some start to wear night vision goggles. Like to bring in your chopper often to kill everyone? They will start putting up more anti-air defenses. Makes you switch out your playstyle.
And I bought this for 5 dollars during the play-station summer sale. FIVE dollars. I'm only literally half way through the game, both half side ops and half main missions, and im already at 130 hours played. And STILL discovering new things, mechanics, guns, play styles, etc. It's awesome.

I agreed @angryJoe that if konami would have let Kojima spend more time making the game rather than being rushed to push the game out as quickly as possible.. it would have make gameplay maybe even better than what it already is, i don't think it will help story much because it's already pretty weak with begin with.. but the game would have felt more complete overall.. especially in chapter 2.. goes to show Kojima worked for the wrong company

Kojima was going over the budget and Konami had to push it out as quick as possible and not spend more money on it, or they would never have gotten the money back from the game. That is kind of crazy to imagine if this game might be considered incomplete considering what is already in the game. Can only imagine what it might have been if given the proper amount of time and effort.
people always talk about female empowerment, and how women can wear whatever they want. they talk and talk about how great badass independent female characters are. they talk about how hiding your body and being ashamed of it is bad.
But God forbid a a character that almost symbolizes a badass empowered woman wear what she wants when she has a good body. No, it's only okay to be proud of a body type that's not traditionally attractive, shame on you if you have a sexy body and want to show it off.

I’m gonna be completely honest, quiet is my favourite character, not for her looks but just the sheer fact that you basically no longer need a sniper because she is amazing with one, also if you’re spotted she will snipe the enemy that spotted you, so far better if you’re trying to be stealthy as well

Quite is realy good in battle
There is no doubt Quiet's character was oversexualized (they could've toned that down a bit, it was kind of annoying) but I didn't find her boring. I thought she was pretty badass, mostly because of the cutscene when she shoots the pilot of a jet.

Is there any logic to having a near nude female character, then have higher tiers of armor that expose more skin than without armor(Some MMO's)? There is an alternative armor for Quiet in the game that acts a normal jumpsuit (XOF Suit or something), covering a majority of her body, yes the scenes could've been reworked and Quiet could've had more clothes to make it less sexualized, but it honestly wouldn't have made a difference as any amount of skin that isn't her arms or neck would've been hammered by people anyway.
I kind of like Quiet as a character, but I can agree that the character is way oversexualized and more could've been done to combat that, but one can't judge the game based off a characters appearance, Quiet is a nice addition to the game that has her uses in multiple fields and her own little backstory. Plus, who doesn't love the occasional sexy character in a game?
The game plays nice with and without her as your buddy, as having her as a buddy is completely optional. Whenever you do have her as a buddy on a mission you rarely see her anyway as she zooms across the map or sits on a distant rock face sniping hostiles. In fact I found myself uncaring for any conversation between my character and Quiet, even to the point I forgot she was with me on some missions. The point being she is hardly visible during any mission you may be conducting, she's a great tactical addition to the game, and she hardly talks. As you progress the campaign more than yeah, I can see how she might become annoying as hell or even cringe worthy to watch in certain animations. Yet still, there are alternatives to her, and if you prefer to have Quiet as a buddy than there are customization options that provide skin covering options, at least past the first chapter.
The near rape scene was quiet graphic tho...

I normally agree with Joe but I disagree with saying Quiet is just fanservice. I agree that there are a lot of scenes that are flat out creepy and the excuse of breathing through her skin to stay naked is pretty damn weak. Yet, by the end of the game I got attached to her. She was a good character in her own right. Don't know if he finished her character arc but there's definitely more to Quiet than the blatant fanservice on the surface.

So my theory would be like this: Kojima need a fan service so he created quiet, then after that he started to create the backstory/reason and all to justify quiet's appereance. Well, in the end it became a good character, thanks to kojima's writing.
Thats how i love the writing of metal gear solid or witcher or fallout. They can put something that shouldn't be there but still complement the main story. If the writing try too hard on every side they will become too pretentious (Like Mass effect or dragon age)

Funny you say that, I agree. I feel like she started off as just fanservice and somewhere along the way Kojima was like "hmm, this is actually a pretty good character." The end of her character arc, which was bitter sweet, is one of my favorite in the series. Reminded me of MGS 3 ending.
I never complained in the past about long cutscenes w/e and Im saying this as a real MGS fan who has played every single MGS game except peacewalker.
MGS5 is a HUGE letdown, when I started playing MGS5 prologue I was like WOW - blown away how amazing it was and I was thinking MGS5 is gonna be one of the best games ever made, but after the prologue what happened? REPETITIVE missions all day long in an empty world. MGS5 feels so soulless :(

EP 1 had like 4 or 5 plot related missions out of 30 while EP2 had only two out of 20 which were both fucking trash. Seriously, did we just wake up from a 9 year old coma, fight a ghost rider while high on some drug right after being awoken from that coma, fucking fight off some skulls, defeat Sahalanthropus, extract revenge on Skullface only to have venom snake pass out from being bitten by a FUCKING SNAKE!?

It's so frustrating that konami didn't let kojima finish, just imagine if kojima transferred the story from the cassette tapes into the game, would've been everything I ever wanted from a video game. The gameplay is superb, but the story is non existent.
The story was non-existent on purpose by Kojima. That's what he wanted to accomplish with the title "Phantom Pain" and cause all this mixed feelings of rage, anger and disappointment, even if he had to disappoint the fans... In other words Kojima really played the fans like a damn fiddle with every misleading trailer and fake marketing. And all this was done on purpose! As for the cutscenes, he replaced them with cassete tapes because of the complaints from the fans about the length. A new perspective where you can listen to the background story while playing the game...
