Dude, Rhett - love what you're doing in exposing us to some super dynamic guitarists. Love your channel and thanks for shining light on these incredible musicians.
Man... I just love watching Rhett geek out like this... Can we just talk about how people with his level of talent still gets so stoked about the things they experience from other artists? THIS is how music stays alive folks... fall in love with it, share that love, and rock on!
She's basically doing the bass and rhythm guitar functions at the same time. From the way she plays and the groove she has, I bet she's also a great bass player.
I was just thinking something similar to that. I play some bass riffs that sound kinda like this-ish,. I use the D and G strings in higher registers a lot and kinda do like boxy patterns and move them around like chords. It sounds a lot easier than it is, but maybe it is really easy and I'm just stupid. I just like root-5th and root-4th-octave shapes... gives everything a groovy space robot kind of feel. I keep thinking I should get a baritone guitar and play it more percussive like I play on bass. I bet that will sound cool. The only proper amp for that would be an Ampeg V-4. So in like 2 years I'll be able to afford that setup Lol. I'll bet she's also a great aerospace engineer, botanist, brain surgeon, the world's first and last time traveler, member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and the President of the United States On The Moon.
She was set to explode right as the pandemic hit and kneecapped all her momentum. I'm really glad to see she's recovering and getting her due appreciation.
Madison is brilliant. she makes 7 sound as natural as Brubeck did 5 and her tone and her melodic choices bring Scofield to mind. Yes... her vocals and her intimate lyrics remind of Joni. all these unique elements beautifully integrated here. Brava
outstanding phrasing, incredible ear… wonderful combination in a young guitarist! It’ll be INTERESTING to see what she’s doing in years to come - quite amazing
I discovered Maddison Cunningham when she supported the John Mayer solo tour on the European leg. I was absolute floored. One of the best live acts I've ever seen and she was just the support act.
I really appreciate you spending time highlighting other artists and spending time to talk theory about their songs. It’s always great to hear appreciation for others out besides the “big named” artists
Watched her grow up in our home church in So Cal where her dad (Scott Cunningham) was our worship leader, and a great guitarist in his own right. She is an amazing & gifted musician. 😮🎉
It's rare at 58 years old to hear an artist that is so exciting and talented, but you have just done that for me. She is amazing, thank you. Just hit your sub great video.
Hi Rhett .. I am a 70 year old danish fan of yours. Lately you led my musical curiousity towards Madison Cunningham. I’m speechless. She is amazing og leads my associations towards an old hippieband THE INCREDIBLE STRINGBAND. I’m totalt flappergasted. She gigs i Copenhagen, but unfortunalely the venue is sold out ☹ all the best 🎶
Only just discovered Madison Cunningham last month and I was blown away by how clever yet catchy her music was. Totally hooked now. I can definitely see her going a long way.
It was a bad choice of song to break down because Madison Cunningham herself already has a video on youtube going step by step teaching the entire song. She has many other awesome songs that could have benefitted from a breakdown.
Yes! Thank you for this show! I'm one of the most enthusiasic advocates of Madison Cunningham anywhere. I've listened to and loved everything she's done since I first discovered her playing on Chris Thile's show three or four years ago, and I've recommended her to anyone who will listen ever since. The fact that so many really good, established musicians are so enthusiastic about her and are passing the word along is telling. She does a lot of covers (e.g. during the pandemic) and makes a terrific side musician (on Thile, for Andrew Bird). She's absolutely the best singer/songwriter/guitarist out there right now who isn't at least 70 years old, and her new record is fantastic. And by the way, please tell your buddy Rick Beato to do a show on her! I agree that this lady absolutely must be supported.
Saw her live in Nottingham, UK, just her and her guitar and was absolutely blown away. One of the best gigs I've ever seen. She is such an underrated talent with such an incredible and unique style. So pleased to see you talking about her, she deserves the attention!
Madison is by far my favorite new artist. She's an unbelievable guitarist and songwriter, with such a unique approach to both. When I saw her last year I asked her a few guitar questions. She uses flatwound 11s on the Jazzmaster in C standard. She also plays in Open D usually on her pink Harmony Rose, and she has an old Silvertone acoustic with a rubber bridge that she had in D standard at the time. Ultimately it's all in her hands of course, and her natural intuition for clever voicings and exciting atonality! Can't wait to see her again in October.
Rhett she is also an amazing accompanist. The live concert from 2019 with Andrew Bird is just phenomenal. I’ve watched it so many times and am blown away by her contribution. Thanks for bringing her to people’s attention.
Saw her open for Hosier in San Francisco back in October 2023... Hosier is fantastic but I could've went home stoked immediately following her set. She and her band were on FIRE!
I really like this type of videos! Not only does it expose these incredible artists to a lot of people, but it also gives me inspiration and a lot of new aproaches to guitar playing that i never thought of before. So keep doing these please!
She popped onto my radar in 2019 and I had the chance to see her at a smallish venue in LA and then at a very intimate solo show at SoHo House in LA...both times she was just outstanding. Yes, there's the Jeff Buckley influence but I also hear some of the wonderful dissonance of Chris Whitley. She's a fantastic songwriter too. Dang, makes it all seem so effortless. Her new tune " All I've ever known" just slays!
Thank you so much for using your platform to give Madison the attention she deserves! I've been a long time fan through the internet and will finally get to see her live in my home country Germany this December!
Okay, I've heard a few folks over the years make their bass sound like a standard guitar, but she seems to sorta make her normal guitar sound like a bass. And ya, on top of that odd muddy sound, she's also doing that haunted singing at the same time. If the crowd isn't already high, they might feel like they are pretty soon.
No suggestions for a series title, but your comment about doing a “deep dive” on guitar players and it took my mind to Jessica Dobson of Deep Sea Diver. An incredible band leader, song writer and of course - a phenomenal guitarist who really likes cool gear too. Plays offsets exclusively, uses Benson Amps. What’s not to love?
This video is like watching a timelapse of the afternoon I had after first hearing this song a few years back. Madison Cunningham is one of my favorites, can't wait to catch her in town next week! I also love the community around her - that Pin It Down video was shot at Sound City and all of the players in her band (Tyler Chester, Abe Rounds) are connected to some really amazing music. Thanks for shining a light here Rhett!
Yup I've been following her for a while now. You've touched on a lot of what I find fascinating about her music. The syncopated dissonant chords that seem to all fit so well together and to sing over it at the same time. She's the real deal.
I've had an always on subtle vibrato on my board for years - I really love the extra bit of motion it adds! Thanks for this, I hadn't come across her before, but I'm definitely going to check out more of her stuff!
Thanks for this, Rhett. Listening to the new album was one of those 'Wow!' moments that doesn't often come along - I now have a ticket to see Madison play here in London in November
Nice, I've been a fan of hers for years! I'm glad you're giving her recognition - she totally deserves it. Amazing talent and one of my favorite guitar tones 👍
I happened to learn about Madison early on and did a deep dive into her beginnings, her approach, earliest to latest recordings (there are a LOT!). A friend of mine has his finger on the pulse of new music and told me about her. One thing she does is to isolate everything she likes that she hears and snags it whether it’s Joni chords or tone or whatever. She’s also very bright, grounded, productive, creative, individualistic and all around cool. Enjoy if you are just starting.
She sounds very jazzy, similar to but not the same as Joni Mitchell (I was writing this as I heard you start to say it.) Awesome looking fret markers on your axe, Maynard!
Rhett, when you said "I don't know how she plays like that and then sings like that over that riff" I started cracking up, because I was thinking the exact same thing when you said it. Btw, here in NY (not sure where you are) before the pandemic, there was a weekly NPR show called Live From Here hosted by the incredible Chris Thile. I was fortunate enough to see it live on several occasions. That's how I discovered Madison. Turns out that the more I know about her the more i appreciate her. Note: on RUclips she does a cover of Tom Waits's Hold On. It was done during the pandemic, in her home and it's Amazing.
Madison Cunningham is my favorite current musician. She's an amazing guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter. I can't wait to go see her play live again for the third time soon.
I really like how she's using her natural voice so well. It's really popular right now for a lot of female singers to use this really breathy throat voice, which was cool the first few times I heard it, but I'm so sick of it at this point. Let me know if anyone understands what I'm talking about here. Anyways, she sounds fantastic. Love it. I love that funky intro too. Very cool.
Saw Madison open for the Punch Brothers in Charleston in 2016 with nothing but a jazz master and an amp, no band. They're my favorite and she is what I couldn't shut up about. Love this vid. Call the series 'digging in'
I'm so glad I watched this video and thanks for turning us on to Madison. I didn't think I'd like hearing anyone else sing Nick Drake's songs, but she is AMAZING! 'River Man' is my favorite and she knocks it out of the park!
Yeah, Madison is incredible! I discovered her on NPR some years back and she's only improved since then. I can't stop listening to "Hospital" at the moment, but every tune is a perfect little (very complex) puzzle. Her voice and the tunes are so great that people might not notice her guitar skills, which are immense. And hey, check out the version of "Pin It Down" that has 88.5 in the title, with the all female band. Maybe the most perfect recording of three people playing a song I've ever heard. This one here is nice, but the 88.5 one is for the ages great.
Thank you for introducing me to Madison. I like her a lot. A guitarist /singer I have been enjoying over the years is Chantel McGregor. Her version Of Mountain Time by Joe Bonamassa is so good. As is her A New Day Yesterday by Jethro Tull. etc etc.
I just saw her tonight in Boulder. Super intimate show at a small venture. She was simply fantastic, as was her band. Flawless playing and singing. Pitch perfect all night. One of the best performances I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen many. You know, she’s only 25! Some people just have it. They’re not aiming to be someone else. They find their thing and take off from there. That’s her. She’s “uncopyable.” She discovered her groove and is masterfully evolving it. I can’t wait to hear what she does in the future. I’m confident it’ll be a brilliant, bright ride for that girl.
Rhett, thank you so so much for turning me on to Madison Cunningham! I've been listening to her album 'Who are you now' on loop ever since! Thank you so much! She is phenomenal!
Huge Madison fan. There’s a great live-on-location video for her song L.A. (Look Alive) folks should check out. It’s subtitled Warehouse Edition or something similar. Love all the tempo & mood shifts in the song!
You and Beato have turned me on to some great artists and songs --- thanks so much. Madison definitely breathes her music --- super kinesthetism + naturally melodic sensibility = great fucking music. Her riffs are beyond , man.
Madison's great, stoked about the new album! I remember her listing Paul Simon as one of her biggest influences--the more I've listened to her music, the Simon influence shines through more and more in her guitar playing, songwriting, and vocal delivery.
Hmm...😏...Yeah... tricky and "weird" and complex from the perspective of the USA + UK blues-rock electric guitar ways of playing. She clearly has an Spanish guitar technique school, blended with Vosa Nova music gender... (same as me, hi Martin from Argentina by the way) An evidence of that is not only the finger picking arpegio plus the 2 or 3 or 4 string chords randomly played, but also the sincopa swing and rhythm which it's the corner stone of that Brazilian music gender. So... once that you've got that sort of "school foundations" of playing and singing, performing like that, get very fluid and natural.
DUDE....literally my first and only (so far) exposure to her was seeing+hearing that very first clip just a minute ago...and I am legit an instant fan. I hope that this clip is just the tip of the iceberg to more of THAT vibe (and then some).
So, let me see... musically complex, real instruments with strings on them, no cicadas, no robot vocals. If this flies with the tik tok kids, maybe I can halt construction on my bunker.
Last yeR she came to my attention by accident . I binge watched everything i could possibly find with her in it. Everything....some pieces multiole tones, i shared with 15 friends over and over . She became my favorite player and songwriter . I continue to revisit many of her pieces. Shes awesome
Rhett glad you mentioned Joni Mitchell. First time hearing her and that’s who came to my mind Joni Mitchell. I don’t know how she can play a riff like that and sing. Imagine if Jaco was playing bass for her! It would be magical! Thanks for introducing me to this talented woman!
I love listening to who you tell us of regarding talent because; You've opened the doors to my listening in a whole new way.... I find myself mellowing out... I previously listened to one genre mostly: (Hard Rock). Now I find my ability to express myself expanding due to this fact. Thanks Rhett bro... Sincerely: David Paul Rivera
Great to see Madison get some attention! Incredible songwriter, guitarist, and singer! I was blessed to catch her when she toured with the Punch Brothers and was blown away!
Rhett I love that you are talking about Madison Cunningham. She's not only a fabulous songwriter and vocalist, but her voice as a guitarist is definitely unique.
Dude, you are so right about Madison Cunningham. I haven't seen her in person yet, but it's on my priority list. Been following her since whenever Chris Thiele took over for Garrison Keilor on Prairie Home Companion / Live From Here!! Thiele used her as part of a number of rotating support singer/ musicians. She's so good live and so versital. Love her writing, really great imagination and depth goin on.
Awesome! I just signed up for your course! That is exactly what I’ve needed for years now! I’ve been playing for years but don’t understand a lot of the theory behind guitar. So excited! Thank you
I found her through a Phil Wickham song and was blown away by her voice, and thought oh wow what a great new CCM artist, and didn’t look much further. And then once I finally took a listen to her music I was BLOWN AWAY. I immediately thought she was a modern day Joni Mitchell. No one writes songs like this anymore. Really happy you know and love her music 😁
Never heard of her, but was immediately hooked. Strong Joni like vibe (from her For the Roses album) and I'm a HUGE Joni fan. So thanks for this great plug ;)
I already knew about Madison Cunningham and liked her music before, but this video really peaked my interest in her again. I had no idea she sang and played at the same time, it's incredible. Her singing is great, but honestly it's the guitar that has drawn me to her music in the past, and now that I know it's all her, I'm going to listening to a lot more Madison Cunningham.

For real, I never expected that I would ever see Madison Cunningham in this channel.
Yeah, Rhett is pretty cool guy
He's gonna carry the torch when Rick packs it in.
Same channel pretty much. Not a diss at all either. I love what they are doing
Madison is like a mashup of Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, and Joni Mitchell, while still remaining unique. Best musical discovery of my life.
This is exactly how I described her to my friends.
Agreed. The Beatles influences shine throughout her music, and on her latest album, I also hear King Crimson influences.
yep, Joni Mitchell was my first thought - complex music with vocals of a pretty straight tone floating over the top
@@debmurray2734 Your Hate Could Power A Train sounds straight out of Adrian Belew/King Crimson. Incredible
@@mattmichael6792 I have always appreciated Madison's bias toward complex rhythms

My thoughts exactly. He was geeking out. It's easy to forget that anyone with his level of talent and experience can still show that much enthusiasm.
She's basically doing the bass and rhythm guitar functions at the same time. From the way she plays and the groove she has, I bet she's also a great bass player.

I only discovered her this year and she seems to still be having a moment which makes me so happy

She's got a killer bass line tucked into her playing style.
That was my first thought too.
Definitely one of her best songs. I also like a live version I saw of Dry as Sand (among a bunch of others now)
You and Beato have turned me on to some great artists and songs --- thanks so much. Madison definitely breathes her music --- super kinesthetism + naturally melodic sensibility = great fucking music. Her riffs are beyond , man.
Sounds like John Scofield playing for Joni Mitchell... :-)
That's it exactly! A great combination.
Yes very well spotted
Spot on bro
Wow! It's not everyday that you find an artist that opens your mind to new and unique vistas.
Thanks Rhett for sharing her music!
When she went into the chorus, her vocals reminded me of early Cheryl Crow.
Her covers are wonderful- Andrew Bird's Manifest and Rufus Wainwright's Poses always make my day.
Some Sheryl Crow vibes in that voice. Insane on all counts. 🙌
Sheryl Crow and Joanie Mitchell, yes
I thought the same but she is also doing the Peter Stroud parts as well!!
Also Harriet Wheeler of The Sundays!
And some Shawn Colvin in there too.
Word.
Madison's great, stoked about the new album! I remember her listing Paul Simon as one of her biggest influences--the more I've listened to her music, the Simon influence shines through more and more in her guitar playing, songwriting, and vocal delivery.
She's a big fan of Radiohead. There's definitely a lot of influence from Thom Yorke in her choice of melody.
Thanks fan !
I appreciate 🙏"Congrats🥳🎆

Rhett, this is a great idea! Love the fact you use your channel to throw the spotlight on new / cool artist. Good on you mate. Pay it forwards ❤❤❤
Hmm...😏...Yeah... tricky and "weird" and complex from the perspective of the USA + UK blues-rock electric guitar ways of playing. She clearly has an Spanish guitar technique school, blended with Vosa Nova music gender... (same as me, hi Martin from Argentina by the way)
An evidence of that is not only the finger picking arpegio plus the 2 or 3 or 4 string chords randomly played, but also the sincopa swing and rhythm which it's the corner stone of that Brazilian music gender.
So... once that you've got that sort of "school foundations" of playing and singing, performing like that, get very fluid and natural.
incredible and unique....what the industry needs! Thanks for thus video my man!
If this flies with the tik tok kids, maybe I can halt construction on my bunker.
are the clouds good listeners? you seem to yell at them a lot
She is by far my favourite artist right now. Glad you talked about her!
Last yeR she came to my attention by accident .
I binge watched everything i could possibly find with her in it. Everything....some pieces multiole tones, i shared with 15 friends over and over .
She became my favorite player and songwriter . I continue to revisit many of her pieces.
Shes awesome
rhett blink twice if you are being forced to make this
She uses a lot of alternative tunings. Listen to the Sodajerker podcast she did about her guitar style and writing.
Just listened to her Tiny desk concert...I`m in shock, what a voice, player, songwriter...thanks for this, man!
Yes yes yes. I discovered here over the pandemic and have been telling everyone about her since. Her music is so fresh and interesting.
Thank you Rhett. After watching your video this morning, I listened to both of her albums. Madison has a new fan!
She is a comet of talent, singing and playing like that at the same time is amazing
Started listening to her maybe 2 years ago! I’m very glad she’s catching on, very talented musician !
Thanks for featuring her- I listen to her music while I work on my house projects.. love what she does!
Nice job Rhett of picking out the rhythm and the vibe behind it! She's talented for sure.
Thanks for showcasing her talent. We saw her in Vancouver during her 2022 tour.
I just saw her this past Saturday. Holy crap she’s incredible.
Fantastic breakdown! Thanks for doing a feature on her as I'd never heard of her before. Love the Joni vibe and her playing is stellar!
Love your videos Rhett and how you break down what they are doing. And another artist I never heard of but really enjoy. Keep up the great work!
