Madison Cunningham stopped by Sweetwater to pore over her pedalboard with fellow guitar nerd Josh Scott! Check out more WOYPB here 👉 ruclips.net/p/PLlczpwSXEOybrnnc_tsyslzlKznYFcwyp
Her new album is simply incredible. It's intricate, melodic, catchy, and weird all at the same time. That's not easy to achieve. Definitely my album of the year.
So cool. I have to applaud Josh for being such a good presenter. I have to say this pedal would definitely serve Bibio as well. And to madison amazing creativity, nothing artificial.
Madison is freaking amazing! How cool is it that she is a minimalist and Josh got into it. If you haven't checked her out, "Hospital" is a great place to start!
Awesome! The first time I heard Madison was on Josh's Channel and I've been listening to her ever since. Love this woman, her guitar playing, song writing, singing, and live performances are out of this world. Gives one hope for the future of music. I really enjoy Josh's JHS Pedals channel, his guitar playing and his sense of humor too!
This is what happens when we get two perfectly " in tune " people truly engaged in a real conversation. Their passion for the subject matter, as well as their obvious respect for each others knowledge, ensures a great interview which is both informative and entertaining. I thoroughly enjoyed this video and I will probably be investing in a JHS Artificial Blonde pedal, if only to satisfy my curiosity and find out what can be achieved when it is applied to these clumsy old fingers 😂🙏
I use the Polytune with an open strum. I play at church and need to check tuning VERY quickly and it’s great to check that quickly. I do my “fine tuning” single string… but, Josh, I use the open strum.
I stumbled across the strum tuning feature on the TC Polytune Mini shortly after I got the tuner about six or seven years ago! Very cool feature! I use it religiously to get a general idea of how my guitar is “sitting”. Especially with my Strats at the beginning of each gig. I play in a lot of different environments especially in the warmer months. I always have a little “float” on my Strat trems and when going from outdoors to indoors and vice versa, the whole guitar often goes a tiny bit sharp or flat. So with a quick strum I get a general reading and then make small adjustments to the trem springs with a screwdriver to bring all six strings back to standard tuning. Of course I always double check each individual string before calling it “good”. But being able to see all six strings in relation to each other for starters is a great feature! That tuner (which also is said to have a buffer) has been on my main board longer than any pedal…except for an old Dunlop Crybaby… Nice vid! Nice rig! Nice, innovative playing! Thanks for sharing!
I just got the bigger one and the manual suggests it works best on the neck pickup strummed with your thumb. Not sure why. I play for myself, alone, so I've been using it before I practice to save time and get into the ballpark. I find it's also useful as a rough estimate of how well your guitars stay in tune between sessions.
The minimalist idea exists in the form of multi-effect pedal boards too. I used a DOD one for a church band. I had three different settings for the entire set. One with a chorus and EQ, another with long digital delay and EQ and another with chorus, short digital delay and EQ. Even though it had the capability to store 33 presets, I just used 3. And I could always add another.
I never thought to put on heavy flat wounds for lower tunings. I've been experimenting with lower tunings a lot, but with standard round wounds. Thanks!
If you've ever heard of Jack Pearson, he uses a combo of flats on lower strings and unwounds on the higher strings for the best of both worlds, and I like it too, so I recommend that setup as well.
Signal chain: tuner > jhs bolt overdrive > jhs blonde trem 1 > jhs tidewater trem 2 > benson boost > jhs cub slapback delay > amp Interesting choice to put the boost after the tremolos and before the delay. My instinct would be to put it in the drive section or at the very end of the chain. Anyone know why she'd do this?
So often (thing not always) we guitarists admire electric guitarists for their lead playing abilities. I’ve no idea what Madison’s lead playing sounds like, but her delicious tone, nuanced playing, and deep rhythmic feel is all I needed to be thoroughly hooked.
OMG love that she didn't know the whole purpose of her tuner pedal. I own one and actually use the poly tune functionality! The desire came to me when playing an outdoor festival - with weather changes, sun/shade, on top of normal instrument changes, staying in tune became like a religious experience. I would check my tuning between every single song. Often most strings would keep their tuning for a song, but one or two might not, but I would have to go string by string to find them. With the polytune, at a moment's notice I can see if everything's stayed put or which string(s) have gone out, then do that string on its own for the finer accuracy. The dude at Guitar Center who sold it to me dissed it and said it was a dumb idea, because who tunes multiple strings at once. Well there's your answer bucko, and I think you're a dumb idea!
Exactly. When you don't have time to check all 6. Strum, see which one is off, then play that one alone to tune with mono display. I'm surprised Josh a) didn't envision that, and b) talked to so many people who also didn't. Seems obvious to me. (And it can do strobe. What.)
I tune my strats a whale octave down with 9-sets..., also classicals very low: nice tones and spongy/dynamic to play... never liked the P90s, but I do seak darkish warm jazzy tones ( with pedals to transister amps...), Madison: just abs fab warm tone with your guitar, and love your style playing it! 😎
She probably won’t see this, but if Madison actually wants to use the poly mode on the Polytune, you have to press the “TUNING” button until you get “C” on the screen, since she’s in C standard.
A good friend of mine once dep. engineered for U2, back when they were virtual unknowns. Dave Evans was sound checking his guitar and it sounded like shit. My mate kept trying to clean it up from the desk and Dave kept telling him not to mess with it. Still sounded like shit....until they all played together....that U2 sound!
Did he say this is their first stereo pedal? Pretty sure the emperor v2 had stereo output via TRS. Maybe this is the first one with separate stereo jacks?
You just up your string gauge. So if 9-42 is for E, you can do 10-52 for D standard, 11-56 for C standard, 12-58+ for B standard. So the tension feels similar across all tunings. Play around with gauges. I used to copy the Arch Enemy guys string gauges and it worked out nicely. They play in C standard.
@@69RJK Strat or Les Paul scale? 10-52 for Les Paul would probably feel similar to 9's on a Strat. Anyways I'm no expert, just what I've learned from other pro players. It's what your hands feel most comfortable with. I want to try 8's next like Yngwie and Brian May😁
Learned a lot here. Not the what, more the why and how. Gonna try to embrace the fewer pedals/know your settings thing - I'm mainly reverb/trem/OD anyway so I'm mostly there, just experimenting with examples of each in various ways. That tremolo pedal is the standout for me - sounds amazing!, but I'm focused on tremolo in a weird way right now. Warming up to vibrato, despite it bothering my sense of pitch when I play it, never when she does. Ooh, she name dropped Ry Cooder! One of my favorites, along with Lindley, Kottke, too many others to mention. And Madison Cunningham of course!
I'm so much more impressed by Madison than I am by all of the widdley woo blues shredder dudes that are usually featured in gear-related content on YT & IG (and I say that as a widdley woo blues shredder myself). Her records are SO great.
Even a die hard JHS fan can find a reason to have that Benson Boost. It's just like... Use this anywhere to attenuate or boost any pedal you've got. Find a reason to stick it somewhere, sound better. It's gotta be in the running for best one knob pedals.
Wait WHAT!? People listen to Juana Molina? I thought it was just me... "Calculos y Oraculos" is the best song ever, when it plays the universe reveals it's secrets of joy and peace.
14:13 Lol Robert Smith from The Cure does that. He always plays with his high E string out of tune (anyone who’s tried to play along with Disintegration knows what I’m talking about).
JHS SCOTT’s = George Washington’s version of a pedal builder/designer. Also an incredible guitarrist. CUNNINGHAM’ s MICHAEL LANDAU’s postmodern female version
That’s funny about the PolyTune. I mean… you know… it’s called POLY for a reason. But I can only surmise that a lot of the musicians Josh has asked about it weren’t around (in the market) when it first came out. 🤷🏻♂️ What year was that, anyway? *googles*… 2010.
Her style is unique 👩 her sound makes me feel Meloncholy, I'm gonna look into her work now that I've had introduction to her, from: Scranton, Pennsylvania
MC is my greatest female guitar hero since Nancy Wilson. And when I watch her she is just so damn beautiful. She has a face that looks like a Roman priestess on the obverse of an ancient coin. Some people get it all!

How she can play that stuff and sing so well is beyond me! Very unique.
And not just drone on the root note, she has very interesting vocal melodies.
I love how she doesn’t care about “trends”. She does her own thing and that thing is so fresh and alive.
So cool. I have to applaud Josh for being such a good presenter. I have to say this pedal would definitely serve Bibio as well. And to madison amazing creativity, nothing artificial.

What a delight Madison Cunningham and Josh Scott!
Just great! I love Madi, truly one of the best musicians today. Thanks for a great interview and deep dive into her unique sound, Josh.
One of the best modern day artists - love Madison! And great job with the channel Josh! It makes me want to fill my whole board with JHS.
I love your music. Both your guitar and melody are so active, moving, and somehow perfectly twined together.
One of the best "musical" interviews I have seen on utube - brilliant
What?
Josh has to be so pumped to create pedals that become someone’s go to….
She is so refreshing to listen to. I’ve been following her since hearing of her from Tom Bukovac channel well over a year ago.
At 5:32 it felt weird for Josh to say shameless plug and not have the jhs show shameless plug vocoder voice/graphic thing pop up. Haha
She's the best! I'll be seeing her in Madrid on December, looking forward to it!
I use the Polytune with an open strum. I play at church and need to check tuning VERY quickly and it’s great to check that quickly.

I use the full strum thing on the Polytune all the time! It was the #1 selling point for me
Seeing Madison in London soon... can't wait.
These two are adorable - the friendship is real
Really cool hearing about this being your first Stereo pedal, seems like a great idea more pedals could use 😎
Love it. Hell yeah to Madi's tone!!! Awesome pedal

The "tails" of the tremolo will have the boost characteristics, some people use fuzz after reverb/delay for a fizzling out effect
Dig Josh and Maddy
Love the pedals

Really Great Job Man ❤❤❤
She will be a huge star very soon!!
