I'll be honest I dismissed Mr Big at the time with out listening to them, but you know haw young people are lol!, They were actually awesome and Paul is an insanely talented musician who could easily have been a top studio or sideman in any genre.
I agree 100% As a long time guitar player that's newer to RUclips I can honestly say I did not have the slightest clue who Paul was until I saw him on the music is win dudes new channel guitar villains and I absolutely love this guy now!
Yeah it was all just music I never got into before internet and RUclips really opened my mind and ears. The cool part about it is I can go back and hear all they music for the first time.
Paul managed to survive the demise of the '80s shredder and remain active - he is now like a scientist who travels through time and encompasses all guitar eras with timeless mastery.
Most did honestly Vai, Satch, Yngwie, Vinnie M, Kotzen on and on still around making music. 90's into early 2k's was truly an abysmal time for great guitarists who used the whole fretboard and could do solos. But thankfully in recent years people have woke up again:)
Paul was my guitar instructor at MIT in Hollywood I was mike Campbell type player- and Paul was and is a sHredder I could only sit back and watch, but he did tell me I had great “feel” when he gave me my final test’ he is amazing
I like Paul's no frills approach to his pedal board. No fancy flight case super expensive computer designed multi-level platform. Just a good ol' hunk off 3/4" plywood spray painted flat black and he's ready to tour the world! He's so grounded and humble. You gotta love it!
Don't you just love that while every other gear video on RUclips features Hi-Tech pedalboards, Paul Gilbert's like... "Oh, and I made sure to sand the corners to my irregularly shaped piece of wood that I cut, myself." Now that's awesome.
When he said "and.. I'm happy already" at 12:23, then he yelled at 12:42 hahaha this guy is just full of joy which is why I love watching his guitar videos so much. No dull moment
I think it's a lot of his appeal. He is forever the teenager in his bedroom with a Mako "Stat" and a Peavey Bandit. You can't ignore how he glows while playing old Rush licks. EDIT: just realized I called it a "Stat," I'm leaving that typo in because it's funny. What was that guitar Jimmy Nolan played? It was like a Fresher Straighter?
Paul Gilbert is my favorite electric guitarist, and I love hearing him speak about music. The professional guitarist world is full of people who present themselves as mysterious, edgy, dark, enigmatic... it's full of unnecessary ego. And Gilbert just bucks all that. He is overtly bright, chipper, quirky, and wholesome. That is just so welcome and refreshing. He's a gift to the instrument's community, and I hope he continues to find success.
Individually, two of the most entertaining characters talking about guitars, but together, hilarious. You guys need to get together and a regular Statler and Waldorf Pedal Show.
Paul Gilbert comes across like one of the nicest and most humble guys you'd ever meet. I'm not a huge fan of his music, per se, but his enthusiasm and humility are great and you can learn from him regardless.
DuckTalesWooHoo1987 I met him at a guitar workshop at Accent Music in Las Vegas in '88 when he still played with Racer X. He is, as you say, one of the nicest and most humble guys you'd ever meet.
I've literally never heard a bad thing about Paul. Every person that met him says the same thing. That he's the nicest person you can imagine. He was hugely influential regarding my decision one day to start playing myself, and it is one of my dreams to meet him in person.
Brett Wall, I agree. He’s always came across as a funny guy, but maybe a little less “out there/acquired taste-ish” these days. Funny people either get funnier with age, or they let life steal all their joy. “If you aren’t able to laugh at your situations, one of them will eventually kill you”
Man, it’s an absolute delight to listen to Paul Gilbert. I don’t mean only his music, but his words, approach to guitar, life and people. He’s so humble, nice and gentle.
I'm in my mid 20s. I'm a hardcore-punk/pop-punk/modern metal guy, but I grew up listening to classic rock/metal, and I just gotta say that any time I see a thumbnail with Paul Gilbert in it, I'll click every time. Favorite guitar player ever. Dude really is a wizard, and all his advice is great. When he speaks or plays, I listen.
I've never played a JHS pedal or listened to any of Paul's music, but I could listen to these two talk to each other all day. These guys are as sweet and humble as they come.

You're not wrong. Why spend $200+ on a pre-made pedal board that isn't going to fit your collection of different sized pedals comfortably or in a way that you like? I personally like my pedals set up in a diagonal way because I'm forgetful as hell.
Paul Gilbert is so great on so many levels - major upbeat personality, awesome ambassador for guitar playing in general, and generally super guy. Plus he figured out how to step out of his 80's shadow and reinvent himself. Which is totally awesome and an achievement in itself. However - and I know he wants to play blues like crazy - there is something seriously unbluesy about his blues playing. He keeps coming back to it, year after year, with ever more bluesier and bluesier licks, yet it never stops sounding like a shredder. A shredder playing bluesy licks.
At 56, I've liberated my entire setup to simply a tube amp and a TS9. Videos like this make me glad that I still kept everything and did not give any pedals away!
There s so much potential when you combine these two guys. I can dig having Josh pick one of the rare pedals in his collection, and letting Paul go crazy with it at least once a month
I’m amazed at how fun and approachable PG seems to be. He’s still working at being “better” and open about what he’s doing. Very cool. I’d love to see SRV’s former (and Joe Bonamassa’s current) tech do an episode on Stevie’s favorite boards. Maybe with Kenny Wayne Shepard sitting in?
I worked at a Music store in Las Vegas in the mid 90s and Paul would come in and i was lucky enough to play pick a tune with him and i picked some obscure 70s rock stuff and he knew everything note for note. Truly a musical dictionary

I had an MXR phase shifter when they first came out around here. They came with a rubber cap for the one and off switch, so you could use your foot while you were standing. I'm still using one.

As far as JHS pedals go...I'm 2 for 2! Love my version 1 JHS AT pedal, and my Little Black Buffer. Thanks so much for making this video Josh!
It's really amazing how much you can learn about the whole world of guitar, music, gigging, playing, tone, ... just watching these videos with Josh and PG. Two cool, funny, amazing dudes that don't take themselves too seriously, not trying to impress anyone, and make you feel relaxed and happy as though you're chilling and rapping guitar stuff right there with them.
And breaks out with some Robin Trower that's freaking awesome!
Glad Im not the only freak to catch that one
Rich Freeth it’s easy to catch, he literally name drops him right after
You guys should do a regular youtube show together! Great chemistry and comedy, love it!
I am in awe of his playing. Simply amazing and so melodic. All shredders should learn to play with feeling and not just speed.
11:50 Josh: "Again, you're very crafty..."
Paul: "I'm just trying to get it done."
Genius! (Literally--the "it" is in his head, and he does what it takes with these components to make "it" happen...so much said in so few words!)
I had an MXR phase shifter when they first came out around here. They came with a rubber cap for the
one and off switch, so you could use your foot while you were standing. I'm still using one.
You can never ever go wrong with Paul Gilbert! He is so natural, both his playing and personality. I am always impressed by him!
Paul: We're not moving on from here yet...I wanna play a lick
Josh: Yeah, I feel like your gettin cold
🤣🤣🤣
I laughed a bit too hard there
I laughed and figured that it was a somewhat clever way to sell some more PG-14s...which I had never really heard of until watching their PG-14 video and now really want one...
What a gem of a human being Paul Gilbert is.
"You watch instructional harmonica DVD's." "Well, yeah, because they have important messages." Truer words, never spoken.
James Cotten gave me "that look". it worked!
Satanic messages, I bet...
True seeker of musical knowledge there, he doesn't want to miss a single thing. The man wants to learn whatever he can, and enjoys learning and enjoys sharing knowledge.
Paul is a walking encyclopedia of great guitar riffs from the 60's, 70's, 80's and beyond! And always perfectly executed. A player's player.
They two are so goofy together and it's incredibly entertaining
I've just heard of him being an oblivious 90's kid but man, im impressed by his genuine personality. Love his no-nonsense setup! He knows what he likes and gets it done! Awesome video!
I wish Paul Gilbert was my uncle. He's got that cool uncle vibe.
The O ring tip was great, I am going to do that on my guitar volume knob because I hit it all the time when I’m playing and it goes quiet or loud thanks guys!
