I’m so happy, she just gets better and better. Been listening to her for 3-4 years now. She leaves space in the music but yet her writing so harmonically rich. She is amazing! I’m frustrated that she is not more recognized. … but happy she’s not commercialized..
You know it’s good when halfway through your pick up your guitar to play a long and instead get lost for an hour before finishing the full episode. Thank you for making great work.
Michael Himes flats have to be on those, round strings pop out of the bridge saddles (though that looks like a different bridge than the original one on the Jazzmaster and Jaguar).
@@joermnyc I disagree. Flats do not have to be on jazzmasters or jaguars and thousands of players enjoy roundwound strings on their offsets - Elvis costello, Thurston Moore, J Mascis, Kevin Shields and Kurt cobain to name a few. Of course the Mastery bridge was invented to overcome the issue you describe which is more likely to happen with aggressive playing and before it, a mustang bridge was the common retrofit. For what it's worth - the bridge in question looks like tune-o-matic style bridge which looks to be stock on that particular model. Maybe it's a roller style - hard to tell.
Radiohead, Paul Simon and Joni Mitchell. I hear it. She's so genuine and authentic. Honest and real. I'm such a fan. Oh, and I see Tedeschi Trucks in concert every year. They're absolutely incredible.
Ha, I hear Joni, Radiohead, and Rufus Wainwright, but now that you mention it, I hear Paul as well. She is incredibly talented and mature beyond her years.
I looked up her videos on YT about 3 minutes into this video. I "got" immediately why she's super talented. I hope she has a long, successful career. She seems like a cool person and a sublime guitarist.
Wow! My worlds are colliding! I've been a huge fan of Madison since hearing her on Prairie Home Companion years ago. She's just gotten better since then. To find her on this here channel, where I come for gear history and advice, is amazing! Great interview, loved the music, everything really. I left a big long comment taking Scott to task for oversimplifying blues history or something, but now? All is forgiven. Mostly. Cereal is not a soup.
"That kind of sucks, but she means it, so it must be right." THAT is the sentiment that expresses why music is so special. Sincerity and authenticity mean everything. Great video and interview.
Really great interview with a wonderful songwriter I had not heard of... I'll definitely check her stuff out. I thought this was a nice change of pace, and appreciated this week's video! :)
Man - this is so cool. Let alone Madison, who's a total genius... But then there is Nick who playes the song like he's never done anything else and Josh who is never scared or hesitant to jam with the greats. I'd be scared shitless. Great, great stuff
One of the best shows I have ever seen was when Juana Molina played a small club in Chicago -- touring for Un Dia around 2009. Intricate rhythms, looping pedals, unorthodox percussion instrumentation. I was hooked. I played the track featured here by Madison for my 4-1/2 year old daughter earlier today -- she may be hooked, as well. Fantastic episode!
As a kiwi, It's awesome to see music from home influence and inspire people from around the world. I've grown up hearing Brooke Fraser on the radio and she's one of NZ's most talented songwriters for sure!
So relieved to hear a girl singer singing in her normal voice - too many copy cats doing the same terrible fake soul stuff. Her singing is refreshing!!! Good on ya'!!!
Great interview with one of my favorite new(ish) singer/songwriter/guitarists. She has such a unique voice, both as a composer and as a player. And really impressive drum work on "Pin it down"-totally in the pocket! -Tom
It is a breath of fresh air to hear such a young talent...I’m a 42 yr old new fan. Also, everyone my age will tell you that Radiohead’s best album is the Bends, but I’m a sucker for In Rainbows.
My favorite new artist on my favorite RUclips channel. Thanks! She is amazing. Had no idea she was so young. Must be an old soul. Ok, now I need a jazzmaster and a penguin pedal.
Just wanted to say, since I got back in to guitar about two months ago, I have learned so much from this channel, and also just thoroughly enjoyed and been entertained by these videos. I just got my first JHS pedal this week-- an Angry Charlie. And it is REALLY GOOD, just like the RUclips videos!
She'd make a great guest at our house. My fave artists are Radiohead, Fiona Apple and Jeff Buckley, while my girlfriend loves Feist and Joni Mitchell and loves that plane watching app.
Read all the comments so far. Liked many. Always like your videos. And, there was so much to enjoy here! You put it out there for us to enjoy, you know! Thanks to all of you for your generosity. Just what we needed. I will keep this one in the library. And buy this creator's work. You guys backed her up so well. Madison was awesome, you all just sit down and pour out great music! Thanks Madison. Really! I learn so much wonderfulness every time I tune in.
AHHH SHE'S THE BEST. I first saw her "Live at Paste Studios" video and have been a big fan ever since. Masterful guitar playing, singing, songwriting... what a monster!
Damn, I love this artist so much ! I mean, songs like "L.A. (Looking Alive)", "Pin it down" or "L.A. (Looking Alive)" are masterpieces, each in a very singular way. Her guitar playing is phenomenal and makes a so perfect ensemble with her voice. In a time of too clean and sweet music, I love the tension, the dynamic of her harmonies and riffs. The best discovery for ages in the music I listen to. Maybe could we have her in concert in south France after the Covid time ? That would be my 2021 wish...
Wow... I like this performance of "Pin It Down" better than the original. I just stumbled across Madison's music a couple of days ago and have become obsessed. Binging everything I can find of hers 🎧. Her musicality is so wonderfully nuanced, textured, and mature. Can't wait for a chance to see her live!
I was listening to Madison’s music not too long ago, and I heard a lot of things that reminded me of Brooke Fraser, and I was wondering if she was an influence for her. That is so cool!! I’m glad I found this video because she answered that question for me. Both Brooke and Madison are two of my favorite artists.
i had no idea who madison was before this video, but i am just simply amazed by her playing and personality. this was such a fun and great video. everything in this video was interesting, the questions, experiences, and music all talked about just makes me want to know more and write more music thank you josh!
Great video, happy to be introduced to her music! The Paul Simon influence is all over that song at the end, from the lyrics, to the flow, to the fingerpicking and understated chops!
That first song ever written by her is "There May Be Tears", it's really solid and its album "Come Away" by Scott Cunningham Band is listed on Spotify as 2012, which means she was not older than 16 writing it... kinda blown away by this.
Thanks so much for introducing Madison to me/us. I love the way her recent single is a beautifully recorded instrumental, when she clearly knows how to write vocals!
You are always ahead, Josh. I just found out about her - and I've been missing out. This fresh and exciting. Gordon Mote is how I got my lights turned on!! Madison is a breathe of fresh air in every way.
I think the first Madison Cunningham track I heard was In From Japan... and while listening to that I just fell in love with her music... and somehow I really felt like she'd also like the same music I like... and now seeing her mention artists like Fiona Apple, Jeff Buckley, Radiohead, Paul Simon etc confirms it... and that feels very heartwarming for me. I think her beautiful voice and her love for dissonant chords.. her guitar-driven sound, are the primary reasons why I'm very drawn to her music. it makes so much more sense now... now that I know that she's inspired by artists who have that certain zazazoo... that seemingly unexplainable insight into the harmony that can be found even in contradictions.
i'm utterly shocked to learn *There May Be Tears* was the first song she wrote. Madison is an unbelievably good songwriter, singer, and guitar player...omg
I love Bill Frisell and I have a Nash Telemaster and I've been searching for something that I only can feel internally. This video brings me so close to finding my own musical path.😊
Interesting when she mentions hearing Radiohead for the first time and hating it. When I first heard Jimi Hendrix aged 14 I was like 'what the fuck is this shit?!' It's often the stuff that challenges you that you end up loving eternally.
Fiona Apple's "When The Pawn..." is my favorite album of all times, and this is the first time that i've seen an artist saying it's one of her fav albums. Guitar players never mention that album. Almost no guitar on it.
Thank you so much for this episode. I must admit I’d never heard of Madison but what an incredible player, loved listening to her and her thoughts on playing and songwriting. Her music is incredible too!
"Write a bad song, but finish it" is some really solid advice.
I hit home hard for me. Nice to see someone else also picked it up.
It’s resonated with me. Old fart can still have learning moments!
The best songwriter I have ever (personally) known told me once that EVERY day he would write 4-6 entire songs.

I'm 70, and this young woman is more together than I am. I need to spend more time practicing. Bless you, Madison. Thanks, Josh.

Luckily it's not a contest 😊. Just be yourself!

Madison Cunningham RULES! An incredible songwriter and a killer player.
So stoked for this interview!
This is the most wholesome interview on youtube
What a great songwriter and singer. She has amazing musical skills.
Oh my ! A nice compliment from a guitar master of the greatest kind !
Dude, you gotta check her out live. Her guitar skills are so fluid and relaxed and her voice,...good lord,...like an angel.
Couldn't agree more. Her musicality is off the charts.
She's really insightful into her playing. That's refreshing. That's a real musician right there. She knows what the hell she's doin

I'd never heard of Madison before this but I've been listening to her for the last 24hrs and she's awesome. What a talent!
I've been listening to her music for a little while now, and she's become one of my favourite artists. This was an awesome surprise!
She plays a Jazzmaster, of course Josh likes her playing
Flats on that Jazzmaster. Respect.

Michael Himes it’s an ultra jazzmaster

She looks like a Greek or Roman princess. Her face looks like one you see on old coins. In other words, GORGEOUS.

Radiohead, Paul Simon and Joni Mitchell. I hear it. She's so genuine and authentic. Honest and real. I'm such a fan.

Indeed. No sane human thinks cereal is a soup. By his rationale, if I pour my water with lemon slices into a bowl, it transforms into a soup. Pfft.
Awesome episode guys. Just love her tone and style! Also, Nick is such a great drummer ✌🏻
she is the one that make me can't leave my eyes off. the way she talks and the attitude to the music and the thing she loves.
Soup is all cooked together (even if it gets chilled before you eat it), cereal is liquid added to solid stuff, so not soup.
Cereal is either porridge or gruel. Not sure which. Maybe both.
@@ljmiller96 Porridge is usually cooked, so maybe gruel?
Also, you can have cereal without milk.
Milk is not broth. That's all I need to say.
Her left hand control is amazing. like an OOLLLLDDD blues player, right in the pocket.
love reading comments on Madison's stuff. A common one that makes me smile is "she plays like an old pro".
Started listening her music because of this show. Loving it A LOT.
Josh & Nick, thanks!
Best from Barcelona.
Look up Larkin Poe, Molly Tuttle, and Tyler Bryant and The Shakedown.
Frank Boyd oh! I know all of them! Thanks for the recommendation, though! 🙂
She is definitely one of the best young songwriters around right now. Keep it rollin!
Fantastic interview, Josh!
Glad this video will be helping to give her the bigger audience that she deserves. Madison is a budding star in the making!
