    I've made the m/w cake a few times (3-2-1 cake) and always wondered how it would turn out on a grill. Now I know thanks to you. Thank you for the video.

    If you are only heating enough water to make one cup of coffee, use your drinking cup as a measuring receptacle and fill it to the very top . Add that amount into your heating pot, and when you pour the water over the coffee grounds , they will absorb and hold just enough the water to leave you with the perfect size cup of coffee without having to guess or check on the level while it's brewing.

      Thanks! Drag out your stuff and give baking a try. The biggest thing I have to watch is heat and only bake with coals. I sometimes get in a hurry because I'm hungry and end up burning it bad. A little burn is bushcraft "normal". Have fun and show us how you do.

    I would probably measure my water for coffee by pouring into the cup first then that amount into the pot to boil.
    I like the fire in the hole method, impressive, I’ll have to absolutely try that method.

    Ah yes the famous "Everglade Seasoning", I use it all the time and have been for the last 12 years when I first discovered it.. I have a good friend who is originally from Florida and vacations there every year. This year I had him bring back 4- 6lb. jugs. It has for the most part replaced table salt as a seasoning and also in much of my cooking recipes. We refer to it as, "Swamp Dust"...lol. Thanks for the video John and for sharing your experiences and knowledge of gear. Much appreciated.The Gospel according John, one of my favorite books from scripture. May you be richly and abundantly blessed in our God's Grace brother.

    Lunch looked great John. I'm sure some soft shells would have been good. That is a pretty kewl canteen. Kinda unique for sure. Ll8ks like the cake turned out ok. I might have put b the cup right in the fire and kept turning every few minutes. Could have also turned the cup upside down in the fry pan if you needed to brown the top some. I plan on starting to carry some small squares of parchment paper with me to see if that help with backing when I go out, if the dang snow would ever go away. We got 2 feet last week. But 40's in the forces will help. Catch ya on the next one.

      Thanks for watching another one. I was a little concerned about putting the cup right in the coals. Since it is tinned steel, I was thinking it might melt the tin off. I did have a flame up and the bottom of the cup and it got a little too hot. You will notice the part of the video where I hold up the bottom of the cup that the is a shiny area with all the black soot. I think that is where it got a little too hot. Looked almost like fresh solder. If water had been in the cup, I dont think it would have done that. I feel bad for you with all the snow. I'm not gonna tell you the temps here in Florida.

    • @John-Sherwood-W4JFS
      @John-Sherwood-W4JFS  4 года назад

      Richard Butner well, I have one place that is real close to my house that I just go to when I don’t have a lot of time. It’s name is Lakeland Highland Scrub. Not a huge place but its a good place to get exercise and film a video. The next place is the Florida Trail where it crosses 471 in the Green Swamp. The trail head is called the McNeil Entrance. There is a campsite about 1.5 miles in called Gator Hole. It’s in a very nice oak hammock area. There is also a Boy Scout campsite on a pond a little further in. The next place is called Catfish Creek Preserve near Dundee. It is harder walking with the sugar sand and steep hills but it is loaded with deer and there are ponds there with bass in them. But don’t go in the summer because there isn’t much shade. The last place is in the Ocala National Forest. I frequent the Florida Trail between Hopkins Prairie and North to Salt Springs. I hope you can get time to enjoy them.

    Those East German poncho shelter peices are an improvement on the Russian Plash Palatka (with the extra arm port) but You could also call it a zelt bahn which is what they call it it German I think Zelt -Tent Bahn -Strip Tent strip.

    • @John-Sherwood-W4JFS
      @John-Sherwood-W4JFS  5 лет назад

      Perktube1 That coffee is is my go-to when I’m hiking and when water is scarce for cleaning. I prefer cowboy coffee in my canteen cup but that requires some cleanup of grounds and coffee oils. That drip is the answer when instant coffee doesn’t do it for you. New steel scout kits would sell really good If they they are not heavy. A lot of folks count ounces nowadays. Everglades is a seasoning blend sold here in my local grocery stores. It’s made in Sebring, Florida. Website is www.evergladesseasoning.com. The original flavor is my favorite.

    what is the best thing to cook in the woods ? and what mess kit would you use ?

    • @John-Sherwood-W4JFS
      @John-Sherwood-W4JFS  6 лет назад +2

      Well, bacon is the best and most favorite food to cook in the woods but it really depends on if you are car camping, hiking, kayak/canoe camping or just in your backyard. And also the time of the year. Here in Florida its very hot in the summer so I don't like soups or really hot foods during that season but those same ones go well in the winter. So i will try to give you examples of just when I go hiking and camping overnight in cool weather. I like to make stuff that's easy to cook and easy to clean up because usually I have limited water with me when there isn't a clean water supply nearby. So the food I go to the most is instant oat meal for breakfast. But if I can, I like eggs, bacon or spam, and grits. For other meals I like the Knorr rice or noodle pouches paired up with canned or bagged chicken or canned pork. Those are cheap and easy to make. I like to make chicken and yellow rice from can chicken and a 5 ounce bag of Vigo yellow rice. Add fresh chopped onion and hot sauce on top and you have a great meal. Another meal is chicken and dumplings. You can make it with a Lipton chicken soup pouch, Bisquick biscuit mix and some veggies. And another idea is bean and cheese burritos. another favorite is sausage, peppers and onions. Saute those together and that's a great meal.
      As for the mess kit I use the most, I have many in my collection but I would have to say its hard to beat the US GI canteen cup set paired with the US GI mess kit. Any of the food I mentioned and probably many of the recipes you enjoy at home can be adapted to be made in these two kits. I will post a link to my cooking playlist so you can see some of what I have done. Some of them may feature different mess kits that I am reviewing but you can cook the same food in the US kits. Sorry for the long reply but I love to cook in the woods! ruclips.net/p/PLBXZMNeFA86tgNxoPY9xal7AqLuMHlKh4

    John, what you call woods looks more like jungle to me, which reminds me about a prior episode of yours where you were walking out when it was just becoming dark. You commented on how much noise the mosquitoes were making. It sounded like a 747 was warming up. So my question is whether you could stay overnight with that many mosquitoes and how it would be done. I am not asking you to do it because I wouldn't myself as it looks like you would be stuck in your tent, and I would not like that. I mean, how would you even take a pee? Not in your Bulgarian canteen, that's for sure.

    • @John-Sherwood-W4JFS
      @John-Sherwood-W4JFS  6 лет назад +1

      You could do it without a screen but you would need the smoke from a fire, some bug repellent and a long sleeve shirt and long pants. And even with that you probably will not get a full nights rest. Thankfully, the mosquitoes are the worst at dusk and at dawn. So they usually lessen as the night continues. I have camped in my hammock with a bug net when they were really bad in the river swamp. They were all over my screen trying to get to me and the buzzing noise kept me awake. That's a night when you don't go out to pee! And I don't pee in the canteen! Lol!

    • @larrykramer6057
      @larrykramer6057 6 лет назад +1

      Yes, John, I am confident that you are not one of those awful canteen-pee-persons, but I have heard of it so I am careful with used canteens (B & B = boil & bleach). Plenty of crummy plastic bottles can be used for pee.

    I have a question. I have 2 of those complete mess kits. I also have 2 with just the steel pan and top or cover pan. No guts. I wanted to paint the bottoms of both pans with black grill heat paint. Would that work since i have to keep seasoning the frying pan? I can just season the inside right? Thanks

      You can paint the bottoms but you really don't have to paint the steel skillet in my opinion. If you do, just be sure to remove all oil residue from the bottom of the skillet and the plate. If the plate part is tinned steel like mine, I would be careful how much heat you expose it to. I think even with the BBQ paint you might melt the tin off. That's just my theory. Not 100% sure.

      Ill research it more. Thought the bbq heat paint might protect the surface more and spread the heat evenly. I will check into it thanks

      Scout Sniper If you look back at my video at the part where I show the bottom of my Scout cup with the cake in it, you will see a shiny part along with the soot when my fire flamed up and got the cup too hot. When that part melted it took the soot off in that area. I think because there wasn’t any liquid left in the cake it allowed the cup to overheat when the fire flamed up. I think this melting characteristic may be why they didn’t tin the steel skillet too.

    Nice poncho. Is that like the WWII German zeltbans?

      BlueDogScout1911 They are similar but I don’t think exactly like them. I never had a WWII one so I’m not sure.

      John Sherwood if they are similar the wwii you could take 4 and make them a pyramid tent with others. If you search about the zeltban it has a lot of neat uses. I re-enacted wwii US paratroopers for the better part of a decade. I started adopting German gear in my kit to help make camp more comfortable. Plus it was historically accurate. At The Front makes really nice repro zeltbahns they have photos so you could compare features. Also they have the leather straps for your mess tins. Great content as always

    Why don’t you fill the mug first with water then pour it in the pot to heat. Now you know how much hot water you have. I have a beef with your show,you have me collecting mess kits and I am still collecting.

      gerald ross I thought the same idea while editing this video. I was thinking duh! Lol. Sorry for getting you hooked. I’m still collecting some too. Just got a set of WW1 US silverware and the correct meat can pouch for WW1 Mess Kit. I have noticed that a lot of the surplus has been drying up lately. I hope more stuff comes available soon. Thanks for watching and for your comment!

    I'd like to share that cake with you...looked good to me. Does bible reading bring something to you?

      The cake was pretty good. Not too bad for the trail. I do enjoy reading the bible. For me, it encourages me and gives me hope and strength to live. Since I believe that God made the woods, I enjoy reading while at camp and reflecting on my life and watching nature at work. Thanks for watching my video and for commenting!
