Campfire Cooking - Cornish Pasties Baked in a Reflector Oven.

  • In this video, I am down in Cornwall to visit my buddy Ginge. Whilst there, it seemed appropriate to have a go at making some Cornish pasties - the original self contained beef and vegetable pastry snack.
It would certainly be easier to make them at home in the kitchen with all the convenient utensils and appliances, but its much more fun to make them in camp and cook them next to the camp fire in a reflector oven.
I hope you enjoy the video,
    Thanks for watching.

Good morning Simon - thanks for visiting Ginge. I haven't heard how he was doing since he left Instagram and I also left Instagram shortly after him. Hi, Ginge IF you are reading this. Just lovely!
Also Simon after all these years of watching, I think I figured out why I"'m addicted to your channel - outside of the obvious - your videos just have that "I'm home for a visit and most things are the same giving it that "comfortable feeling of catching up with friends and family, yet there is that touch of "newness/difference" that makes each video something I don't want to miss out on." Don't know if that makes sense or not, but the videos are like comfort food for the mind and soul. Thanks again for sharing parts of "real life" with us.

What a treat to see you making what I grew up on in Michigan’s (USA) Upper Peninsula. The history…
When you think of the Upper Peninsula’s favorite food, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Pasties, right? The “pot pie without a pot”, pasties have become a northern Michigan staple. Not only are they a flavorful handheld pastry but are also rich in Michigan history.
The pasty came to the United States when Cornish miners immigrated here in the 1840s. The dish can be dated all the way back to 1150 in England. The pasty gained popularity with miners because it was easy to bring into the mines, kept them full throughout the long work days and could stay warm up to 10 hours.

17:40 - I think that expression is a “needs more pepper” face. Great effort and outcome there. What a great little outdoor space to do the bushcraft too!

In upstate NY, USA near Rochester, we call it a rutabaga. Some folks call it a waxed turnip. Delicious cooked and mashed with some potato. 🤤

Cornwall won't hate you; these are 'travelling meals' and impressive to see you make them in camp. Cornwall may hate me, however, as I make them from left over barbequed lamb shoulders instead of beef.
