  • Right time to put this babby through its paces!
    See the fitting video here • BMW S1000R ※ Ohlins ad...
    Update: tyre pressures (measured cold) are 38psi (2.62 bar) front and 42psi (2.9 bar) rear. The front tyre is about 1.8psi (0.12 bar) too high. Can't imagine it will make much of a difference but I will get it down to the correct 36.2psi (2.5 bar) before the next test ride!

    My 2019 S1000R shakes her head under hard load - but you can just pish through it, and it's always been fine for me. Stiffening up the rear preload also helps a lot.

      Yeah it never really threatened to get out of hand but the Ohlins did help with the hard acceleration wobble. Never got rid of the high speed weaves on corner entry though which was a shame. The Gen 3 S1000R never had the same issues on my test ride.

    I have the 2023 M1000R. Absolutely AMAZING bike, but it still has the wobble issue under heavy acceleration. Lowering the PSI in my tires has almost totally alleviated the issue. I'm running Battleaxe S22s, front psi-29, rear psi 36. I am still going to put Ohlins dampener on her though. He is using the SD-045 here. I am ordering the SD-038 as it has a longer stroke (68mm).
    Thanks for the video, and the info!

    I know Ricky has moved on from this, but in case others are watching this because they have problems with their s1000r. Had my 17 s1000r since new, 60,000km, stock steering damper. Never had the wobble issue. Had Rosso IV tyres put on, replacing Rosso III (previously had another set of Rosso IIIs and before that M7RR), and the wobble happened when following certain vehicles on a freeway. Odd. Theory: Rosso IV has a pointier profile, and when going fast and straight sets up a slight imbalance. Will put an Ohlins damper on. Fwiw the Rosso IV are nice on the side.

    Even in the video, you can see that the front fork springs are completely relaxed. The motorcycle gets a forward tilt. The front fork becomes vertical to the road. The wheel is difficult to stabilize with this almost vertical position of the fork.

      Interestingly my front preload higher than stock but it doesn't make a difference to my problems - I've ran out of things to change but the Ohlins has got my back now 😊

      RikkyTang! The front and back work in combination though. This is why you have to keep adjusting the sag to make sure the ESA is doing its thing. Double check the front and rear are in optimal range.
      Rear rider sag should be between 20-24mm
      These bikes are sharp. But you gotta keep them sharp like a blade. Constant maintenance 👌🏻

      @@Invis_Space I certainly agree that the suspension on this bike needs a lot of attention/maintenance to provide the best performance. Sadly that kind of attention will make me grow tired of the bike 😕
      I had set the front and rear sag following the recommendations in the manual and then later spent a whole day trying different combinations of front and rear preload to get the bike to be more calm, no success though!

    Hyperpro RSC adj steering damper plus adding a little preload got rid of the wobble my 19 had.
    Shame on BMW to release the bike with an ineffective stock underdamped steering damper.

      Yes it was frustrating to be having these issues on a brand new bike and know that I wasn't alone. By comparison the bike I replaced it with (an R1250R) is one of the most stable bikes I've ever ridden even when you abuse it!

    Well hello there.
    Would you share where you have bought that Ohlins Damper?
    By the way, what are you using to record your voice/audio in general

      I have to admit that I bought a used damper from eBay lol. Took a chance because it was about £60 cheaper than the brand new price I generally found on the web.
      For audio I am using a Purple Panda lapel mic and a Zoom H1n voice recorder. I also am wearing a neck tube/neck warmer and a a Windjammer neoprene wind blocker that sticks to the bottom of the helmet. It's taken a lot of effort to find a decent sound 👍 EDIT: I forgot to say that I usually have a Nokia Lumia 930 in my back pack to record the exhaust too.

      Hi there, I hope that (wobbles aside) you are enjoying your bike! Lets get to it - the bad news is that during last year I was unable to remove the high speed wobbles/weaves. The Ohlins steering damper really helped on hard acceleration wobbles (i.e. 2nd/3rd gear) but didn't solve the higher speed issues.
      Now in December last year I had my bike serviced and the shop noted that my headstock bearings were loose! They didn't say by how much but they said they could feel back-and-forth play in the forks. They tightened them up but I'm going to have to wait till the spring (weather and COVID-19 permitting) to find out if that has made any difference to the high speed wobbles. If it hasn't then I'm at a loss I'm afraid... if you've been on the S1000r.co.uk forum (and in the comments of some of my videos) you can see that there are different opinions on how preload adjustment works (or doesn't work) on this bike. Because of the electronic suspension, preload is the only thing you can take a spanner or a screwdriver to and so it may get expensive to sort this out properly.

      @@RikkyTang I have watched alot of youtube videos on the s1kr and all do have the wobble.
      I know of someone who has fitted a damper off of an RR and he feels a slight difference but still fights the bars in the high speed range.
      It really is dangerous and BMW need to be brought to account over this.
      Should be treated like a re-call.
      I may sell up mate....i am 100% into the bike but the wobble is really off putting.

    Are you gripping the bars hard or baby birding it through hard acceleration? I find on my Skr that if there’s even the tiniest off balance tug, you’ll get headshake (wobble).
    Something weird starting happening to me this year. I started to get 3 issues I didn’t have the previous season.
    1) I started getting front wheel lift much more regularly in places I never got it before.
    2) engine braking become very aggressive. I’d back off the throttle then have this kick from the bike. Causing me to be thrown forward a bit.
    3) it started to get headshake.
    I reset my sag and it completely remedy every issue. I think you need to reset your sag on these bikes maybe every 12 months or so. Oil in the forks change over time. Maybe there’s a weight change in you as well. 1 things for sure, the electronics are a bit sensitive.
    I’m thinking your headshake might be from very very slight front wheel lift.
    Edit: watched the rest of your vid. Saw you were still having headshake. You really want your steering damper to save you from a tank slapper, not so much resolve headshake. There’s other things to try to take away headshake. Riding style, tyres, suspension. Or all 3. Deffo check your sag bro.
    Good luck man 🙏🏻

      I've tried lots of different ideas to calm the bike down under hard acceleration and the problem is that a solution that works one day does not work in a different situation on a different day, on a different road 😫 From my testing with the new steering damper, it feels like this solves most of the wobble problems I've been having with the bike 👍
      You make a good point that as the bike ages mechanically new problems might appear... it may be related to the chassis bearings (wheels, swingarm, steering head) as well as the fork oil as you say.
      I test rode a Kawasaki Z1000SX and a Z900 recently and they are both rock steady when you are going faster! The Z1000SX might be my next bike in a few years...

    • @Invis_Space
      @Invis_Space 4 года назад +1

      RikkyTang! As the fork oil ages you have to make adjustments to the compensate.
      I was surprised to find my sag was out as I had done it mid season last year. Also had a very slight weight change. I wouldn’t have considered that an issue but seems it was.
      I think the rear sensor detects positioning under load. The wheel might be very slightly lifting causing you headshake. It’s good practice to adjust your suspension every few thousand miles if you ride hard.
      I think this is the reason there is such a contrast of people that have the problem and people that don’t. When you stay on top of the suspension, the bike is absolutely planted! Almost witchcraft level electronics haha
      You let it get outta sync a little. You have this slightly twitchy bike.
      When you have all this software and hardware working together it can regularly work it’s way outta sync.
      Have you ever set the bike up for you?

    • @bmwhowknow
      @bmwhowknow 4 года назад +1

      RikkyTang! Yes, you will not get rid of the wobbles completely, but adjusting the suspension will reduce the strength of this effect. Try to relax the grip and get satisfaction! 😄

      @invisiblekid69
      I certainly do feel that the front wheel does lift slightly many times under acceleration in both Road and Dynamic modes which then starts the wobbles. This happened to me on the demo S1000R I first test rode last year (with very low miles on the clock) as well as my bike with nearly 4000 miles on the clock now. Personally I don't think my bike behaves any worse since I first bought it - it's always had these issues and so did the demo bike.
      I set the sag on my bike too but it made no difference to the head shakes/wobbles. I then went through the full range of preload settings at the front and the rear over many test rides and I still could not dial out the problem.
      I feel that these issues are more related to the rider weight - it seems that this bike works well for a small range of riders. It's all speculation though because no one seems to have the answers that works for everybody! At least the new steering damper has solves most of my problems now.
      I wanted to go to a motorcycle shop to have them set up my suspension; my bike has the electronic suspension option. Because of the Dynamic ESA they told not to visit! Because the only thing they can alter is the preload, they told me that their service would not offer good value for money.
