  • The Oldest Rainforest in the World - 180 million years old.
The Daintree Rainforest in Queensland's Wet Tropics World Heritage Area (northeast Australia) is a remnant of the great Gondwanan forest that covered the entire continent of Australia and part of Antarctica 50-100 million years ago (MYA).
The Gondwana Rainforest is named after Gondwana, the ancient supercontinent that existed in the southern hemisphere 500-550 MYA. Present day Australia is a fragment of this southern land that started to break up 180 MYA.
The Daintree Rainforest and the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area (-16.069665; 145.462043) is one of the most remarkable places on earth. Spread along 450 km of rugged Tropical North Queensland coastline between Cooktown and Townsville, the Wet Tropics is home to ancient remnants of the Gondwanan forest once covering the continent.
