- A fox finds a nest of baby robins nesting under my deck. Under the cover of darkness the fox strikes and kills the baby robins. I had cameras set up in anticipation of capturing the fledgling but instead caught a predation...up close and personal. It is sad but provides a front seat into Mother Nature.

Yup they are during Covid at the refinery the same red fox would come to the unit waiting by my truck at 515am on the dot. My coworkers wanted to feed it but he or she didn’t trust them. This was when most of the workers were at home so no trash to jump into and eat from. So it learned to come to me to eat. Or try to scavenge. This is the city Southern California by the way no wilderness around the refinery.
What a careful fox. And he doesn’t eat chicks, but probably he will take them to little foxes

It's a painful cycle to watch, especially with robins being one of the kindest and gentlest songbirds I know of. It helps to remember nature can't sustain itself indefinitely without every food source being eaten.
Well look at this way this is a good thing for the fox family that he is feeding definitely was a great dinner that night for them
@@envyjosh, of course. I just wish another more deserving bird species got hit, like invasive and very aggressive House Sparrows. I want selective pressure away from my precious robins by bias. 😂
Well Robins are highly territorial birds and will defend their area from wrens and other small birds.
Although this is an American Robin? This Robin doesn't look anything like Robins in England, this bird looks more like a blackbird with a deep red breast.
@alexwilson365 , European Robin is famously dickish, but they are not closely related to American Robins. They share the name because of their chest plumage and that's about it aside from being passerines.
American Robins aren't as social as flock feeders and don't have a reputation for nest raiding, which removes most of their selective pressure for aggression. Their only flock behavior as a species is sleeping in the same tree at night, but live as a typical pairing foraging lovebird otherwise.
@@benderisgreat95able the American Robin ( everyday a school day ) reminds me a lot of the blackbird. I'll have to do some reading up.

The fox caught not only the 4 chicks, but also the big bird. He totally wiped out the whole family. If the piles were only half a meter higher, they could have escaped, the recording clearly shows that the fox just reached them. He couldn't have jumped the extra half a meter. It's been about that long. For the fox family, this barely covered their daily feast, especially if several foxes were waiting. It was no accident that the fox sniffed back, because even with the capture of the big bird, it must have been a scarce meal for 2 big foxes and 4-5 developing fox cubs.
What big bird? I only saw the 4 nestlings get eaten. Are you talking about one of the parents?

Unfortunately this is exactly why you should not use cameras that have night vision or turn off the infrared light when filming a bird nest. Nocturnal animals such as raccoons and foxes can sense the infrared light and are drawn to it. People do not realize it but they are putting the nest in serious danger by having an infrared light (in this case two) pinpointing exactly where it is for predators. It's basically a spotlight for predators saying come and feast. Us humans can not see infrared (only the dim red of the actual bulb) but our eyes are much less sensitive compared to these night time animals. Some birds can even sense the infrared light as well. I have experimented and some species will be aware of it or not even return to the nest if it is on.
Holy snap. There was a couple moments during the video where I wondered if the fox could see the light. Interesting
@@FlyBoyKhi Yep I noticed that too. I think this fox was drawn to the infrared light which then caused it to become aware of the nest. Foxes are surprisingly curious animals and will explore/investigate things out of the ordinary.
And what makes you think that is true.
well i think the idea was to punt in danger the nest and get more views...anyway good video...

Great job Mr Fox I tip my hat to you Sir. 👍🤟
Interesting. Often enough, adults of many species of birds (and even mammals) leave young alone in order to draw predators away, lessen the scent or attractiveness of where young are, etc. White-tailed Deer leave fawns obscured in something like tall grass alone all day. Piping Plovers draw mammalian predators away from young on the beach with elaborate distraction displays, sometimes feigning injury so the predator will go after them and not search for young, knowing they can easily fly away to avoid the threat. This American Robin chose to vacate the area presumably hoping the fox would as well. However, perhaps an attack strategy would have been better, especially if it could have stayed in the area to see the fox was undeterred. Northern Mockingbirds used to dive bomb me all the time when I was kid and they had a nest in my yard. Going back to the beach, many terns can do damage in the same way. The fox would have at least been annoyed and pestered enough to potentially second guess what became an easy meal.
I don't think any song bird would have tried such a bold attack against an animal that's searching for food for its own young.
I'm sure they'll lay several more broods -- just higher up from now on.

the fox eating the birds isnt what made me sad. The part that made me sad is when the mother bird came back with worms in her mouth ready to feed the babies, but she does not know that they are dead yet. But thats mother nature!! 😍😍😍
I Love a happy ending, Bur Hur Hur!
foxes are super cute btw, love them.
Little bro became the dinner before having dinner
I love nature and agree that perhaps the fox was bringing food back to his/her cubs. Any chance of maybe trying to set up a nesting shelf under an eave in case robins may take to it? Unfortunately, robins picked a vulnerable place to build their nest :(
Pure coincidence -- we just built a fence and our entire backyard (where the deck is) is now entirely fenced in now. So I think that should keep the fox out if the birds nest there again next year.
Another L for the bird community
Mother knew the fox was there even though it tried to lure it away, must have thought the nest was secure and out of reach but either way no way she could have protected them..

Omg that's horrible! Why doesn't fox just go to the market?
He had multiple pups to feed.
