Young Ferret Gains Her Confidence - Going After Rabbits Solo - Sunrise Ferreting 21

  • A young ferret takes the leap and tackles rabbits by herself for the first time.
    / zeus_polecat
I decided to try Leto by herself, so she had to do all the work alone. She has learnt from and relied upon an experienced ferret until now. As we can see, Letos confidence builds gradually over time, and the pressure builds upon the rabbit. For many minutes, the rabbit thought it could evade the inexperienced attacker, in the hopes it would leave through fear/boredom. I'm glad to see Leto sticks to her job until the end.
After I catch a rabbit, I squeeze its bladder to clear the urine. Urine can taint the meat. I also have to be careful when gutting the rabbits, as a broken intestine can also leave meat unsuitable for human consumption.
I always make sure my purse nets are packed away neatly, as setting up can be be frustrating with tangled nets. It's best to make sure no debris or twigs are caught in the nets.

These rabbits are collected for food, for my ferrets and people. This is a free range meat, that has lived a free life. These rabbits will be controlled even without me. By taking them myself, the meat is used. Ferreting is an environmentally friendly method of rabbit control.

For RUclips Review - This video is edited in a self explanatory way for all languages to understand. People under the age of 18 also practise ferreting and I aim to set a mature example. Contact between the animals is brief and is not the focus of the video. Rabbit dispatches are not shown. No blood or gore is present.

I am a Korean who enjoys watching videos about ferreting to get rabbits. It was interesting to see a young ferret enter a rabbit tunnel and eventually hunt one rabbit. And the second rabbit featured in this video seems to be the most agile among the rabbits featured on the channel!

I am used to watching mink hunt so its strange seeing a ferret fumble around with a rabbit. A mink would have it killed in less than half the time the ferret takes.

Yes ferrets have lost some strength through domestication. My male ferret Apollo is bigger and stronger, you might like him more, there’s a playlist. The point is to take the rabbit meat home, would a mink killing them below ground in inaccessible places really provide meat quicker than the ferret?

@@ZeusPolecat Minks can be trained to drag back what they killed but it looks like getting the ferrets to chase rabbits into nets is just as good. Also a ferret is much less likely to bite than a mink lol. I'll look for the videos of Apollo. Your videos are really well made. I like seeing how ferrets are hunting compared to mink. They are so adorable and I love seeing them get to hunt.

@@rustheart9532 It's hard to see in my videos, but even I struggle to pull the rabbits out their burrows at times. The burrows get very tight in places. I'm certain a mink would struggle. At the end of Sunrise video 7, you can see Athena trying to drag a rabbit, they are quite heavy. Also it eliminates the need to train the animal. Joseph is great at what he does but not everyone has the time or skill to train an animal like that. Ferrets are ready to go without training. Glad your enjoying the videos!

@@ZeusPolecat that's a good point, didn't think of that. Ferrets are such wonderful little things, they are probably really enjoyable to work with. Your videos have send me down a rabbit hole (the irony lol) of researching their care and now I am seriously considering getting some one day.

Carly Moore don’t dis ferrets like that that’s the point to not kill in the hole other wise you wouldn’t be able to retrieve your kill

Thanks for the video, very educational! Also, I love seeing how bristly their tails get the minute they go in the rabbit hole. I have 4 ferrets of my own, but my oldest Grim has a high hunting instinct. I noticed it first when Grim would sit on the window sill and hunt (and eat!) flies. Then he started challenging the neighbors' free roaming cats when I took him on a walk. Scared them away too despite them being 10x+ his size. I got a Sheltie puppy and Grim stalked that puppy for days. I should've seen right from the start what he was doing but I didn't until I found him jumping onto the back of the dog and grabbing its scruff. I don't trust Grim around other animals anymore (besides his ferret buddies), haha.

My Pit Bull grew up with 13 ferrets. They messed with him so badly when he was a puppy (and into adulthood). But, he learned how to play with small things without hurting them. When he'd play with my friend's toy poodles and he looked like he was starting to get rough, all we'd say was, "Paulie, ferret!" and he'd back off and go gentle again. But the ferrets were his best friends. One of them loved him and would curl up on him while they slept. But I couldn't tell you how many times he'd stick his face under the bed and come out with one or two ferrets hanging from his lips. He looked so pathetic.

In your country, there are a lot of good, strange and beautiful animals, maybe well protected, well cared for and involved in conservation.
