Ellensburg Blue Agate Hunting First Time - Rockhounding Washington State

- I found one! The 3rd rarest agate in the world! After about 45 minutes into my first hunt for the rare and elusive Ellensburg blue agate I found a really nice specimen. This one was sticking out of a horse hoof print. Rockhounding is one of my favorite hobbies. The Ellensburg blue agate is the third rarest agate in the world. It can only be found in the region of WA. Searching for the E-blue is one of the funnest hunts. It must be the thrill of the chase. The Green Valley area still has some blues, however most of the land is private property. This makes the agates even more elusive.
Luckily, Steff's family owns 120 acres directly in the ancient extinct riverbed that fed the rare blue agates into the Green Canyon in Kittas County of eastern Washington State. This is to the left of the Rockin Tomahawk Ranch property. This is private property and not open to the public for hunting blues. The Tomahawk Ranch next door is open to the public. I can't believe it! We get to hunt for one of the rarest stones in the world! So fun! These precious gemstones were formed nearly 50 million years ago when glacier water flowed over volcanic basalt. No two blues are alike. Each Stone has a unique mineral structure made of 43 traces elements.
These stones make beautiful jewlery when tumbled and smooth. But I also think the Ellensburg blue agate raw is very stunning. These agates are said to have healing properties by the locals and Native Americans. These agates really have a nice energy. The blue color is almost hypnotic. The blue really pops when you see one there lying on top of the dirt. The e-blues are a sky blue color. It is said they get their color the same way as the sky, through refraction. Now, one of my favorite things to do in Washington is dig through mud and horse crap with my bare hands in the hopes of finding a blue rock.
This was our first one of six digs so more Ellensburg blue agate rockhounding vlogs to come soon!
I hope you enjoy my rockhounding video. :)

Hey rockhounders! This was one of six digs we've done so far, so stay tuned for more Ellensburg blue agate videos coming soon!
I would love to cut and set one for you in trade for agate rough...
My dream has been to go hunting for blues in Ellensburg. I literally dream about it. I think this spring is going to be it!! I live in Tx. Can you provide a contact to ask permission for me and my girl friend to treasure hunt? What is the best month in spring to come? Thank you and congrats on your find!!
It was fun! Early spring is best time. Rockin Tomahawk Ranch is only place I know of if they still are there.
You are so lucky! Happy you found those ones! I find treasure hunting so much fun 👍
So freakin' lucky! In the beginning, I was like, "There's nothing here." After I found this nice one I was super motivated. We've been there six times now and find something really cool each hunt!
Don't forget to take us with you on your next hunt haha 👍
@@AdrenalineON Oh I will! Hey you come out this way, we will so take you there in person. I've never done a youtube collab. would be cool to do one with other like minded individuals.
@@DaredevilGirlDiana I would want that as well!! That would be so cool.

Thank you my beautiful friend! You're so sweet and happy. I enjoy your channel too!
Great video and you found quite a few of them which youll find more when looking in other places. Those horses looked good and just came over to see what your doing. Just shows what you can find in the countryside. Do you think they have much value? You just might come across something.rare. Hope you find a lot more next time!
Thanks! The E-blues are very valuable. The raw blues are valuable to geologists because it is such a unique and rare agate of the world. The tumbled blues are valuable to jewelry makers and buyers. Some hounders search many times over their lifetime and don't find a blue like this. We are lucky to be able to hunt in the ancient riverbed where the blues were most concentrated. The Native Americans from this area treasured them and the higher ups would were jewelry made out of them.
finding ellensburg blues is totlly on my bucket list
I just love searching for them!!
How can I go with you to look?! I know no one in the valley, but I'd love to meet you!
Can't look there anymore. The property was sold.
Who's property did you hunt for those rocks on.
Steff's aunt owned the property but she has since sold it. This is right next to the Rock'N'Tomahawk Ranch. I will miss searching for blues here. So much fun!
We just went to the Rock'n Tomahawk Ranch but we couldn't find the open gate and we tried to get up a steep rocky hill but didn't feel comfortable driving it. Can you please tell me where the place that you went to is and if we could get in touch with the people who allowed you to dig there? I am an honest 73 year old person who would love to find an accessible place to dig. Any info you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I guess Daredevil doesn't wanna answer some questions.
This property that we searched on was private property owned by Steff's aunt. The property has since been sold, so our days of finding Ellensburg blues are over, sadly. Rock'N'Tomahawk is the only place I knew of that would let outsiders in but I think they are closed now. This is what makes this blue agate so rare! You can't just find them anywhere.
@@nboldrini Just been busy...
From personal experience there is a rock face somewhere over there that you dig into the wall and you can find massive chunks if you have the patience and gut to be standing a foot away from a 30 foot drop. i will find out the exact location i am going tomorrow morning.
Any luck??
Any news?
Bree Kressly we found a few not very big. there’s a rock shop near “first creek” and if you mild Forest Road 9112 and follow that to a little “parking spot” if you hike up maybe just 5 minutes you’ll run into the spot. it looks like a war zone. quite a few blasts in the wall it looks like
@@garrettwarner5828 wow thanks for the quick reply! I took my kids with me to red top for the first time and I'd like to find a spot and hang out for the day without dragging them around. I dont mind but they're still younger. Are the blues up top not true blues? I heard that they're only found near the green canyon area?
Bree Kressly i’m not exactly sure if they are true blues. i didn’t have them tested as they were very small and they are going to stay within my personal collection. I know green canyon has some but i have yet to go there. i’ve only been living here since march most of my experience is in the salt lake valley area of Utah.
If you take away the outer crust and it stays blue, then you know that you have a true Ellensburg blue.
Why did you stop uploading? I love you
I got burnt out and took a 3 year hiatus! I'm baaaack...
That’s so cool!! My dad has an RV park up there and someday I’ll go looking!
Awesome! GOOD LUCK and happy hunting!!
she said "that's what she said!"
It would be great to team up for some rockhounding adventures.
I'm so down!! Going to go sub to you.
@@DaredevilGirlDiana Were always knocking around Central and Eastern Washington and have found some great spots. Stay in touch.
My parents have 20 acres in Ellensburg. He finds them all the time, he also finds trespassers. 😳
I'm sure they do!
Captain has a cameo in this video.
I really want to go where I have permission.. I’d pay to do it
Rock'N'Tomohawk Ranch is the only place I know of, if they are still active.
Those aren’t all Elensburg blues. Take the outer crust off the rock and rock will turn white
They are most definitely e-blues! I've had them confirmed.
Why the gloves??
No idea 🤗
I just saw a video yesterday of 3 people finding blue agate by Mt Baker along the "Swiftly Creek". Looked like the same thing you are finding. You may want to check it out.
That's awesome. From what I've learned those are blue agates, but not Ellensburg Blues. Eblues are only found in the ancient Green Valley river.
I’m Gonna have to start looking at every pile of horse poop from now on
LOL! Check the gopher mounds too! Those little buggers dig them right up and then the rains clean them off!
And its the 3rd rarest in the world??? Not if your finding them like that its not.
Yes, due to location. The Ellensburg Blue Agate is ONLY found in this location. And they are usually very hard to find even in this location. I'm very lucky when it comes to rockhounding.
