Great reaction! This is one of my favorites of hers, she was 14 when she recorded it. Her vocals are phenomenal on "I Care 4 U", which is a very beautiful song on her last album.

Awesome reaction! I agree with everything you said. She does have similarities to Janet...because they both vocalize in soft head voices a lot. Its crazy how she was only 14 when she recorded this song too. Her overall cadence was so mature. Another great slow/mid tempo track from her I think you would like is called "I don't wanna" from 1999. R.I.P Babygirl

I've just seen that this is a cover of a 1976 Isley Brothers song. My reference was The Carpenters in 1973. If you ever wanted proof of my overwhelming white-itude (white-osity?), there it is!

I love this version by Aaliyah of an Isley Brothers classic. She was such a beautiful girl and will be missed for eternity…❤

Thank you! I can't see anyone else that's doing it so it's good to have some feedback. I assume that i will normally be able to identify the artist within 2 minutes, they won't all be quite as revelatory to me as this one. I need to work up a big playlist of requests!

This song is heavenly. What an absolutely beautiful vocal performance. We were the same age (she was born 2 weeks before me) and it was soooo sad when she died. 😭😭

I think part of the reason why you might not have recognised it as Aaliyah, after listening to 2 other songs, was that this was SO early in her career, and her voice changed a bit from the age of 13/14 (when she recorded this), to 22 when she recorded both We Need a Resolution (which was released a month after it was recorded. Timbaland’s contributions on her last album were the last songs she did) and Rock The Boat. Her voice got more full and, naturally, deeper as she went from being a very young teen to an adult. I haven’t listened to this song, or her first album, in YEARS since it was all written and produced by her abuser. But this one, which was an Isley Brothers’ cover, is one of her best, particularly when you consider her age at the time.

She made 2 versions of this song, which is a cover of The Isley Brothers song by the same name. This one is my favorite version.

Aaliyah is a great singer. Even 22.5 years later it still saddens me that Aaliyah's life was cut short in that damn plane crash! She was only 22.7 years old. Aaliyah was also a talented actress. Shortly after her death she was supposed to start filming *Sparkle* with Whitney. As many other great artists/people, they'll live on forever through their amazing legacies.

She also covered "Choosey Lover" by the Isleys and it was also excellent especially the remix.

Your guess was close though.... Aaliyah was inspired by Janet and Sade.

First, I like that you go straight into the reaction, moving the intro as the outro. Short and sweet.
Your comparison of Aaliyah's vocals to Janet I was expecting, but then you mentioned Emma Bunton and I bow down to you. Just Incredible.
Another song that's quite similar to this is Mariah Carey's Underneath The Stars (1995) which came after Aaliyah's song. I know you're on a Mariah journey and I can almost guarantee that you will love the song.
A fairly recent song with this vibe, vocal style is Summer Walker's "CPR" (2018?). Start a playlist of these R&B tracks....
