Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps (no crowds!) + exploring Trastevere! | Italy Day 12

- Our final day in Rome was spent beating the crowds at Trevi Fountain and the Spanish steps, exploring Trastevere, eating a local Roman snack, and finishing off our Roman gelato tour. We LOVED Rome, but it’s time to head to Florence for the last couple days of our trip!

I am an Italian living abroad. Today I was feeling a bit homesick and started looking for Italy travel vlogs and your channel showed up. I have now binge-watched all your Italy-related videos and I would have thought your channel had at least 1 million followers. I hope your audience will continue to grow because I absolutely adore your videos! Your genuine happiness and enthusiasm made me smile and I fell in love again with my home country. Hugs from Iceland!
Wow, thank you so much Lisa! 😭🥰 We appreciate all of the kind words, especially coming from an Italian! We absolutely loved your country and cannot wait for the day that it’s safe for us to travel there again. Iceland looks amazing too! Do you like living there?
@@AdventuresofAplusK Thank you, guys!! You really made my day and I am looking forward to seeing more content. Hopefully traveling will be less stressful in the future! I appreciate you visiting the Dolomites, hands down one of my favorite areas. Iceland is stunning and we are now enjoying a full midnight sun :) No darkness in the summer here, which is pretty spectacular. Hope you can visit one day and yes, you gained one loyal fan:)) All the best to you both and keep up the amazing work!
Oh my gosh don’t even get us started on the Dolomites! 😍😱 We really want to go back and do longer hikes and stay in some refugios! I am pretty confident we’d love Iceland. We love waterfalls and hiking and from what we have seen it looks epic there! We would love no darkness-more time for exploring at weird hours and hopefully less people!
So glad the RUclips recommendation algorithm showed your videos in my feed. Thanks for sharing your travels with us. Keep up the good work on the videos. Safe travels! Can't wait to see what you explore and eat next!
We love when algorithms work in our favor! Thank you so much!!!
"It's like they know!" ❤️
Psychic gelato! 😉🍦
I visited the seceda mountain after i saw your video and it was amazing, the view, the weather, just wounderfull.
Yay! We’re so glad you loved it! It’s absolutely wonderful and no words or video or photo can truly illustrate the beauty!
just found your channel last night and binge watching right now!!!!
Hi Hyunji! 👋🏼 Thank you so much for watching!
You two are smart to start the day early and see the landmarks without all those crowds. Food and gelato looked amazing again! 😋 Loved loved loved the “old” age photos of you two...I laughed so hard I had tears in my eyes! Sorry! 😂
We cannot stop laughing at those photos 😂😂😂
Great video. Rome was the biggest surprise for me on our trip to Italy. I hate big cities, so I decided I would tolerate it because I wanted to see the Vatican and Colosseum. Turned out seeing the Vatican and Colosseum were my least favorite things, and I ended up just loving the city in general. It's big, but it doesn't have the crowded rushed feel of a big city. Just the coolest vibes walking around the streets. I hope to go back and stay long-term one day.
We really loved Rome too! Seeing the mix of historic buildings and ruins and the different neighborhoods was so much fun!
Learn something new every time I watch your videos 👏. That bag Airbnb is brilliant 👍. Still laughing at your age photos 😂😂
Yay! That’s our goal! Bagbnb is seriously the best! It has saved us many times 🙌🏼 we even used it to store our backpacks during the Colosseum! And OMG those photos 🤣😭🤣😭
Your channel popped up on my algorithm as I've been watching loads of Italy vlogs, and so glad it did. Your vids are the kind of travel vlogs I love, showing all the touristy sites to see, the different neighbourhoods, as well as places to eat all while giving useful information. Love it!
Thank you so so much! This means a lot to us, as that’s exactly what we try to create! Are you headed to Italy soon?
@@AdventuresofAplusK I'm hoping to go to the North of Italy next year spring but trying to plan in advance as I know it can get expensive 😅 Your style of vlogging honestly makes it so much easier to plan a trip, and it's fun to watch! 😀
Ooo do you plan to visit the Dolomites at all? It was our favorite area! We’re so glad that the vlogs have been helpful. We have some detailed travel guides on our website too if you need more ideas of things to do and places to eat! We unfortunately couldn’t eat everything we wanted to, but we sure as heck tried! 😜
@@AdventuresofAplusK No I won't be visiting the dolomites this time, I've only recently heard about it and it does look amazing from what I've seen 😍 im more of a city girl but I'll definitely add it to my travel bucket list.
Oooh I'll defo check out your blog as well. Haha that's the struggle of travelling, so much to eat, so little time 😂
We mostly just spend our days walking around so we can eat more 🤣
"you can't sit on the Spanish steps"....next shot is a guy sitting on the steps....laughed at that. And love the BagBNB tip...hadn't seen that before! So cool.
LOL that guy: "rules were made to be broken." And BagBNB is amazing! Luggage Hero is another good one. They have saved us a lot with Airbnbs and check out times that are earlier than our flights/trains.
@@AdventuresofAplusK yes makes total sense I love it. Definitely will come in handy for when I travel with the family in the future and we have too much stuff.
Watching all the way from Ireland! Love your videos 🍀
Ireland?! That’s amazing! We cannot wait to make it there someday! 💚
@@AdventuresofAplusK you will love it ! 💚
Since watching Kara and Nate's video earlier this week, I've been meaning to come and back re-watch this episode as a comparison as I thought I remembered you guys at the Trevi fountain and no one being there (I was close, there were very few). Also love how topical the start of this video was - saying that you had to do some work Kathryn.... not any more!!! 🥳 I must go visit Rome sometime without 40-odd students in tow! Also feels very topical that I'm watching an Italy vlog today given that England are playing Italy in the Euros finals tonight... no idea if this makes the news over in the US, but it's a huge deal in the UK that England got to the final!
Working from Italy was the hardest thing lol! No cafes really allow you to sit and work and I just wanted to explore. Glad that’s no longer an issue I’ll have! 🙌🏼 And Adam has been keeping up with the Euro Final!
Note about bagbnb/similar - some shops close for siesta like in Spain we booked a place for two hours so we could come back get our bags and go to the train station - but we noticed on the the sign that the shop had an hour closure when we needed to retrieve the luggage. It didn't tell us on the app! Thankfully, we found another one close by.
Oh that’s good to know!
Thanks guys love the video!
Thanks Rose!
wow you guys really beat the crowds and could take some amazing photos!!
It was the BEST! Great lighting + less people = happy us! 🙌🏼
@@AdventuresofAplusK i cant wait to visit next week! thanks for sharing!
Of course! Are you heading to Rome or other cities too?
@@AdventuresofAplusK we are doing Milan Venice and Rome!
Oooo nice!!! We will have to check out Milan next time!
All this talk of Gelato has forced my to do to the freezer and compromise on a mint magnum.
We bought some gelato at the store the other day...we miss it!
I want gelato now =) , Italy buses not coo lol I want to go to Rome! Great vid guys
Thank you! And we miss that gelato sooo much! 😋 The buses...not so much haha!
You guys were so smart to get out so early! It was sooo crowded when I was there at night. Us and about 800 other people sat on the Spanish steps that night, I had no idea we were breaking any laws! LOL
Lol! Now that I google it again I think it’s actually that you can’t eat on them. Oops! 😬😬😬 No Italy jail for you! 😉
You used to be allowed to sit on the steps (never been allowed to eat on them), but now they've changed the rules so you can't sit on them anymore
@@JCelia Thank you for clarifying!
J Celia thank you! It has changed since I went there last April. 😩 what a shame!
thanks A+K
Ok....you guys are going to have to get out of my head...lol. I first came across your channel while researching Hawaii for our 15 year anniversary next spring. Long story short, pricing got way out of hand way too quickly and we started looking elsewhere. We decided on a week in Rome, Italy for about 60% of the cost of Hawaii. I've been away from RUclips for a couple of months and come back to see videos from you guys in Italy! Great minds!
No way!!! Great travel minds think alike! That’s crazy that Europe was cheaper than Hawaii. Hawaii is definitely a pricey destination, but Europe always sounds more expensive. If you have any questions before your trip, let us know! 😃
@@AdventuresofAplusK, flights were the downfall for us. For 2, it was around $3,000 round trip from the east coast unless you wanted to spend around 30 hours traveling to get there. I think the week we are taking the trip is part of it as it's still in the "Spring Break" window. Round trip flights and staying at Hotel Raphael near Piazza Navona for the same as flights for Hawaii. No brainer!
We'll definitely be watching your vlogs to make notes. Same offer from me if you guys ever come to the east coast for the the Great Smoky Mountains. I try to get up there a couple times a year and it's gorgeous! Some great waterfall hikes in the park.
Wow, no brainer for sure! We booked flights to the Big Island the week before thanksgiving for $500/person, but the week of thanksgiving was $1,200/person! So crazy!
And we plan to spend some time East next year! Shoot us an email at hello@adventuresofaplusk.com with any recommendations so we can bookmark them!
OOPS! We made an error! We believe you CAN sit on the Spanish Steps, you just can't eat on them. We try to fact check, but misread this one, our bad! 😬
Adventures of A plus K Actually is just now being proposed a law that will not allow to even sit xD
Phew! So maybe we weren’t totally wrong! Just maybe looking too far into the future 😅
Adventures of A plus K exactly 😂. Great videos btw, keep it up, i watched the full series in a row yesterday!
Thank you sooo much!!! 😊
I was in Rome recently and you have to know where the fountain is, as its kind of hidden.
It definitely is! We thought it was going to be more in an open piazza, but it’s tucked away.
@@AdventuresofAplusK That's what I always thought too! That's how its always shown in movies and on tv, but it sure isn't. Our last day in Rome we took an all afternoon golf cart tour, (the fountain was part of it) and saw things we never would have known about. It's a little pricey, but 100% worth it ! :)
Ooo a golf cart tour?! That sounds super cool! Our favorite part was just getting lost walking around the city. Sooo many gems!
🤣🤣🤣 so great
you guys are so cute!
You’re too kind! Thank you Philip! 🥰
what month was this? and do you know about what time the crowds descend on the trevi fountain? 😆 ty!! love this video
July '19. Go as early as possible!
Love your videos of italy. Visiting next month. Did you notice if the places you ate at if they accepted credit cards?
We had a mixed experience with this. We ended up using about €400 throughout the trip in cash and then the rest card. We found that some gelato spots and smaller restaurants (the more food stand type) only took cash, as well as some of the smaller cities. We recommend getting a bit of cash out before you go and then going to the ATMs inside of a bank (not the ones just on the street. They charge a TON extra) to get more throughout your trip!
@@AdventuresofAplusK thank you. That's alot of help. Did you notice if at sit down rome restaurants charged you like 14%service charge to eat there? I watched a RUclips video of a family they did that to. He felt it was cuz they weren't locals & didn't speak Italian??
Some restaurants did charge more to sit down than takeout. And we usually found that this was on menus and didn’t think it was because we were tourists. Not all places did this though!
It's probably hard to find some cold Diet Coke in Rome. And how about ice?
Do you remember the name of the place where you got the pizza from? I'm going to Rome soon and that pizza looked delicious. Love your Italy videos.
Hi! Do you mean the spot from a previous video where it was in squares? That was Pizza e Mozzarella! I don’t remember getting pizza on this day, but maybe I am forgetting!
And thank you so much!
Okay thanks! I was watching all of your Italy videos and probably got them mixed up. But I looked up the place you named and that's definitely the one I was asking about. Thanks
Yay, we’re glad that’s it! We loved that spot!
Can you tell us the name of the number one gelato place you liked? I can't understand what your saying - lava something...
Gelateria La Romana
What time did you wake up to get there with no one? 6am?
I believe the sunrise was around 5:45 AM, so I think we got there around 5:30 AM. There were a handful of people, but nothing compared to how it is mid day!
Thank you so much for replying 😊 We are planning a trip there and I’m trying to work out how to avoid crowds 😂
It truly was worth getting up super early! We enjoyed many espressos after 😂
That will be us 😂😂 Coffee is life
Amen!!! 👏🏼👏🏼
Is there a reason why we can't sit on the steps?
We are not sure, that’s just what we have heard. Probably to not block them for people who need to use them to get around
I will be there in September how early did you go? thanks
Hi Leslie! Sunrise was around 5:45 AM and we got to Trevi Fountain at 5:30 AM. We then walked to the Spanish Steps around 6 AM. Both were still very quiet, so you have some wiggle room if you want to arrive a little later. We found that most areas in Italy were a lot quieter before 8 AM!
fantastic!!! I get up at 4am every day anyhow so I will do this ...thanks so much I love your videos so informational :)
NICE! We are early risers too so it’s not as bad! And thank you so much for watching! 💗
