Knee osteoarthritis (OA) and hip osteoarthritis treatment is on the edge of a revolution. This presentation from Tues 16/2/21 has some of the new knowledge about knee osteoarthritis and hip osteoarthritis that has emerged from the research over the last few years.
The old concept of 'wear and tear' that has been accepted for so long has been shown to be outdated. Osteoarthritis is so much more than just a mechanical wearing out of the cartilage of a joint.
Instead, as Kim explains, it is a much more interesting and complex interaction in the body, which also means there are more solutions available.
The GLA:D programme was born from the experience in Europe that there were well accepted guidelines about the best management of OA, and that too often these were ignored in favour of proceeding with joint replacements.
As she explains, there is a lot more potential to improving osteoarthritis from non-surgical means than we ever thought possible, which has us all excited!
The GLA:D programme is a 6 week course that starts with determining if the person is suitable, then finding their current baselines in terms of strength and activity.
The programme is specific to the person and adjusted from their baseline to gradually progress strength and challenges as they are capable.
At the end of the programme, the baselines are remeasured so that the participant and the physio can see the improvement!
