  • We went to Cajas National Park (Parque Nacional Cajas) in Ecuador and attempted to camp for a couple of nights...
    Being Canadian, we were excited to camp in the mountains at Cajas National Park. But Cajas National Park ranges from 3100-4600m in elevation and it absolutely KICKED OUR BUTTS.
    This is the story of said butt-kicking.

    /// ABOUT US ///
    Hi! We are Eric and Sarah, a couple of Canadians currently travelling around Ecuador. We’ve been married since 2017 but have known each other since we were only 6 years old! During our last year of university, we spent 4 months in Honduras on a semester abroad and fell in love with Latin America. Since then, we began planning and saving to do an extensive Latin America tour. 2020 delayed those plans by half a year but during this time stuck in BC, we explored a new hobby (like everyone in the pandemic) of videography and photography. We are now using our new skills to document our adventures around Ecuador. Our desire through these videos is to provide helpful and inspiring content for other travelers while also showing people around the world how beautiful and underrated Ecuador truly is! Thanks for following along and please leave a comment to say hi!

    Estuve como un parcial entero aprendiendo sobre los parque nacionales de Ecuador. Solo he tenido la oportunidad de ver el Cajas por viajes a otros lugares. Explorarlo como si no lo he hecho, pero incluso mi profesor me dice que es un muy bonito lugar, tanto su flora como su fauna.
    Debe de ser una asombrasa experiencia según he podido apreciar en este video.

    Cajas STARTS about a thousand feet higher than Cuenca so the altitude can get you for sure even for those of us living in Cuenca. Also generally, it's best to plan your hiking in the mornings because fog and rain are more prevalent in the afternoons. Certain times of year, the afternoon fog can get dangerously thick (like you're not going anywhere until the morning). Good job with your videos and for being good sports.

    Hi, Ecuadorean here (born, raised, and living here! hehe). I love your videos and your adventures. I think you made kind of a "rookie" mistake. I mean there is a reason why you don't see many locals camping there. Cajas National Park is famous both for being beautiful, and for it's altitude making people sick. Even if you've been in Cuenca for a few days, Cajas is much more higher, and for every 1000 mts high, well you feel it in your system.

I did not know that was the plan as my spanish was basic and she did not speak much English. We had a male US neighbor/friend with us. I by some miracle at 62 and my issues had no altitude sickness either place. I came home due to mom's health. An only child. Yes we have a drone :) Apparently there are places to buy Oxygen in Cuenca but we didn’t look into it much.

      Hey thanks! We got most of our stuff from Mono Dedo in Cuenca. We brought 3 drone batteries. The mavic mini did not like the altitude though.

      @@EricandSarah Thanks for fast answer. It is really usefull. I actually know Monodedo from Colombia - Suesca and did not realized they are in Ecuador as well.

    The best medicine for altitude sickness (soroche) is coca leaves tea. You can find coca leaves on any town market and any peasant can tell you what to replace it with if you cannot find coca leaves. I use cedron, Manzanilla or hierbabuena. A warm soup also helps.

      Not from the waterfall because it was running well. But we did carry water tablets just in case :)

      Hey! We rented it all at Mono Dedo in Cuenca. Very friendly people and they are super helpful

      @@EricandSarah Thanks, my son and I will be in EC for three weeks in Sep/Oct and planned on hiking Cajas. However, spending a nigh or tow sounds like fun - as long as we do not hike as far in as you guys did(!). I will be 60 at that point, and while I live in Denver, I am sure back packing at 14000 ft would be tough.

    Did you rent your camping gear ? Tent, sleeping pads, stove etc ?

    • @EricandSarah
      @EricandSarah  2 года назад

      We rented the tent, sleeping bags and pads from a place called Monodedo. Unfortunately that’s the only rentals we could find in Cuenca so we purchased a stove and anything else we needed!

      Honestly that’s why we were quite surprised! Altitude affects everyone differently so we didn’t know how it would affect us. But we think carrying our packs over exerted our bodies so it made things worse. If we day tripped we would have probably been totally fine!
