    Brilliant, this should have a million views😀

      Thank you, that's such a kind thing to say, I would like to make it to a million hits total on my channel some time.
      I may have mentioned this previously but I don't think this job needed doing, it turned out that the wheel bearings were wrecked but it was fun doing the job and making the film so I suppose it all worked out OK at the end of the Day, safe riding and look after yourself during these dodgy old times, regards John from sunny Devon UK

    John, great video and very helpful, I have a leak from one front calliper, so intend replacing all seal plus the 2 O rings, This video really opened my eyes, so thanks for sharing, BTW I note one of the commentators disagrees with using grease on the seals and pistons, I’ve ordered a genuine BMW seal kit which comes complete with OEM grease, so your answer is spot-on and and agrees with BMW, take care and stay safe.

      Thank you Cliff that's a really lovely comment, I'm glad the film will be of some use and hope your job goes well and safe riding on the test ride and afterwards, regards John from sunny Devon UL.

    Thanks for the video! Really helpful. Only thing I miss in it is the torque value for screwing the 2 halves together. Could you help me with this value?

      @JohnPatrick58  11 месяцев назад

      Hi, I could not find a torque value any were, in the end I just guessed, I think I looked for a similar size fixing in a similar metal and used that, I cant remember what it was. The film is quite old so there might be some info out there on the internet now. I hoe that is of some use, thanks for viewing and commenting, hope the job goes well and safe riding, regards john.

    Great video. I am about to carry out the same job on my 2012 GS. The piston surfaces are now pitted so time to carry out a bit of TLC. I note you used a manual car/bike pump to free the pistons with compressed air. What fitting did you use between the manual pump hose and the banjo female inlet on the caliper itself. I believe the caliper fitting is M10x 1mm? Any help appreciated. Cheers Rob.

      Hi Rob thank you for your kind appreciation, the connection from the pump to the calliper was a valve stem cut out of an innertube, I tapered the rubber so it screwed in a little bit, I found I only needed a very slight pressure, just one slow press of the pump peddle and hold to maintain the pressure, the taper didn't pop out. You might need to go to a lorry tyre fitter as I don't think any cars have innertubes now, they are usually happy to give them away and the rest of the rubber comes in handy for all sorts of jobs, good luck and I hope the job goes well, regards John.

      @@JohnPatrick58 John, Thanks for getting back so promptly. I will give your suggestion a try and see how it goes. If it works it's a lot less messy than faffing about with brake fluid to get the pistons out. Thanks again Rob.

    I've seen advice against splitting the calipers as they apparently tend to leak afterwards in the seam. Any thoughts on that?

      Hi ChefPelle, thanks for commenting, neither of the calipers I worked on have leaked, 10,000 miles and counting. I was very careful to clean all the parts and re-assemble them accurately.
      A little knowledge is dangerous thing! This Job Did Not Need Doing. My MOT man said he thought the problem was with the wheel bearings, when I investigated they were rusty and had almost no grease in them. I changed them and the wheel rotated perfectly. I also found out that it is very important to follow the instructions in the workshop manual on refitting the front wheel, before torquing down the axle and clamp bolts you need to bounce the forks up and down so they find there correct spacing. Hope this is of some help, John from sunny Devon UK.

    Grease on seals isn't advised for any brand brake seal, please use brake fluid.

      No, there are siliconbased grease specially for brakes, Sil-glyde is one. Normal oilbased grease is a big NO, that will destroy the seals but also boil and cuase gasbubbles if mixed with the brakefluid.
      But upon rebuilding calipers it is recommended to use grease made for the job so that the seals last longer, and do not distort during assembly.
      In this video he used silicongrease wich is made for brakecylinders and seals.

    Hi great work 👍 could you please let us all know what the torque is for the pinch bolts holding the two halves of the caliper together. Would much appreciate it seems to be a BMW secret can't find it anywhere on the Net 🤔

    • @JohnPatrick58
      @JohnPatrick58  3 года назад

      Hi TheDeeRat, that's exactly what I discovered, couldn't find the answer, I think I just decided on 30 Newtons. Just thought, you could call one of these guys that specialise in calliper over hall, they may tell you, good luck, regards John from sunny Devon UK

      Hi just had a thougt, they are Brymbo clipers, I think, you could try searching for Brembo caliper torque spec.

      @@JohnPatrick58 Thanks for the reply I don't need to do a rebuild just want to clean up those rusty bolts and zink plate them. Normally you can get the torque by undoing them with a torque wrench but they have locking compound on them which means the torque required to undo them will be much higher than spec . I have even tried asking BMW Motorrad but thay will only replace them for an extortionate price 🤬 !! The answer out there somewhere!!
