Full transparency, this is a re-upload from a channel I was a formerly a part of, but I wanted to update it and re-upload it here where all my 'Can You Beat?' videos live. This will also allow me attempt this challenge for Spyro's sequels one day in the interest of having the trilogy all in one place. Thanks for understanding.

I seriously enjoyed watching this, it was quite fun to watch the weird tech required and the just general self improvement, I'm also wondering though, is it possible to beat the remake of this game without gliding? I had heard that in the remake the charge jumps had the jump distance increased, making some jumps previously impossible well, possible and you were so close to making it to the dream weavers area, so I wouldn't mind at least seeing if it is possible to make it
I'm going to present to you an alternative perspective. The QUESTION is 'Can you beat Spyro The Dragon without gliding;' not 'Is it a failure if you can't beat Spyro The Dragon without gliding'. The answer is no and that fulfills the criteria of the question. You didn't lose because you can't beat the game, the goal was the answer and you got the answer so you succeeded.
Can you get more distance by changing into the jump instead of changing from the top of your jump?
Would love to see this in Spyro 2
You're in the right place then, stay tuned :)
glideless is clearly dead but proving that minimum Glides is 1 Glide is still undeniably an achievment.
I think it's two glides, as you also need to glide out of the whirlwind right after the first glide. Still pretty good
Thanks you spoiled the ending by having it as top comment
@@rubberchix not their fault it ended up being top comment
@@i_garfed_on_the_carpet are you gonna take the responsibility then?
@@rubberchix when I got here it was already top comment
I'm a fan of the GameChamp3000 approach to these: a "Mission Failed" counter, to turn it into a "minimum banned action" run. It still lets us see the whole game, and it implicitly creates a challenge for somebody else to beat that number.
It's also more entertaining, I like longer videos and sometimes people end a challenge after 10 minutes and only 1/4 into said game.
I know that there is more to a challenge after a tutorial or gimmick battle proves an challenge run impossible, but I always feel the need to leave the video anyways. It feels like the video is a different beast entirely.
I think the run died in dream weavers for the challenge, but I approve of the way you continued. I definitely wanted to know how many glides would be required at minimum to beat the game. Great video!
Thank you, you're right in my opinion, the run had to die. If only the balloonist weren't so far away 😖
@@NGPlusVideos I think every "Zero X" challenge can be turned into "Minimum X" challenge, if absolutely necessary.
sonofmar is right, the run did die after we got into deam weavers,
I honestly think it's possible..... I will devote myself to making it possible
It's actually been proven possible since the video
Run definitely died in Dream Weavers but the fact that that’s the ONLY mandatory gliding spot and you can still beat the game without any loot, dragons or eggs from that homeworld or its levels is still very impressive
It's not mandatory, I just cleared the jump
You can clear the gap in at least 2 ways.
He never used the roll function, and there is a sweet spot but good luck.
I could barely do some of those jumps with gliding, and to see someone do them without is just awesome.
I’d be curious if this is possible in the reignited trilogy. For those who don’t know the jumping while charging is different in the remake. In the original games the max jump height while charging is reduced, where in the remake one can get the max jump height while charging. Worth considering
I’d like to see this too. The only thing you’d need to prove is if that Dream Weavers jump is possible. The rest of run is the same or easier. An interesting subgoal there might be to see if it’s possible while banning whirlwinds again. Probably not though.
@@KingHarambe_RIP Reignited does have more complicated geometry though, and since it's remade some of the distances and heights are likely to be a little different. I think while some things will be easier to pull off, far more will be straight up impossible
@@skilletborneit has shit geometry but still they did a great job with crash and spyro. Totally screwed up crash 4
@@28AccountsRemovedcrash 4 was alright I had fun
First game I couldn’t 100 precent tho it’s awful for that
@@Ben_c-j4u the style and difficulty spike are horrible.
Glideless? No. Absolute minimum glides with a self imposed honour system? Yes, a great one at that. Well done! And considering how glide heavy this game is, one (1) mandatory glide is honestly outrageous
You can jump the gap 3 ways on dream weavers
I love the creative freedom Spyro 1 gives challenges like this, since you don't actually have to "finish" any level except the last three (and yes, I count the bosses as levels.) Spyro 2 and 3 are a lot more restrictive in that regard, as you need to reach the end of every non-flying level in every world but the last. I'm sure they'll give you a much harder time.
Ripto and Sorceress make you fly. One might argue flying and gliding are not the same, because they're not. If the rule is no wings, only spyro 1 can be beaten without gliding
Just want to say that after seeing your more recent videos and coming back here, I'm glad that you've started allowing glitches in these challenge runs. Seeing what's possible without them is neat, but the real fun of these kinds of videos IMO is using them as an exhibition of obscure glitches that often aren't even used in speedruns. There's a reason people love ymfah and all his glitch-heavy challenge runs.
I agree. I am recording Spyro 2 for the next video, and it's Glitches all the way!
@@NGPlusVideos makes me wonder how spyro 1 would have been if you allowed proxies and stuff
The whirlwinds I think were totally fair game. And it's still pretty impressive that you could get through only gliding once. Lol
Re: needing to glide in the Dream Weavers home world
You could rephrase the run as ‘minimum glides’ instead of ‘no glides’. Otherwise I think it’s fine, you did a great job with this one!
Also I think your compromise with the whirlpools was totally fair. It fine so long as you charge to exit.
I did think about that, but I also liked the idea that I couldn't visit any worlds in Dream Weavers or collect any gems there either. That helped make it more difficult to get to the next home world. Otherwise I'd have collected more than enough gems. Thanks again 😁
Re: Dream Weavers
I know it is technically a glitch, but you could try to use the 3 creatures at the beginning of the level to get a proxy jump that gives you enough height to charge over the platforms. Just theorycrafting and I'm not sure how would this fit into the rules, but if it works it could open up the possibility of doing a true no-glide completion.
If I'm not mistaken, a proxy is considered a glitch. It would make it so much easier to beat the game glideless, though; you could even consider the highest possible completion (without the flight levels)
Proxy isn't a glitch. It's designed in the game, make it an exploit if you will. That's now 3 ways I have no glide beat dead weavers.
The run died because he didn't use it, he didn't find the sweet spot, nor did he try "rolling" off the edge and jumping. Hard to explain how to do it. I used to have a channel. They keep banning me though.
i think the dream-weaver compromise is 100% fair.
I'd say the challenge was a success; Dreamweavers is a dream world, so you can just say all that happened in it was a dream.
I mean... you proved that you can beat the game with one single glide, not too shabby if you ask me!
This was Great! You deserve way more views. Your voice is made for this kind of stuff!
Hey thanks a lot for that, I think I finally found my niche and I'm enjoying the ride. We're only just getting started, but i have faith that the views will grow 😄
as I'm sure you know, the algorithm's picked up your channel (I got recommended your dark souls run)
but these kinds of channels are my absolute favorite, stuff like ymfah, challenger andy and sample. This is the first Spyro challenge I've seen though and I loved this game as a kid. you've earned another sub.
The challenge died, but the run lived. Thanks for the dedication to seeing it through. It was fantastic.
The fact that you had to make a compromise just make the challenge more interesting. So while the challenge failed, the run succeeded.
Just found this and this was so cool
Though I do believe the run died in dream weavers, the fact that you beat the run with only having to use gliding once AND you didn't even do the world where you had to glide on (basically skipping it as if the balloonist took you straight to gnasty gnorc) is super impressive!
Considering the game expects you to glide a lot getting it down to only 1 is incredible.
Though it makes me wonder, just how many glides would it take to... say... 120% the game?
While the challenge was failed in Dream Weavers, I do really appreciate the compromise you gave as it really stuck to the spirit of things. I thought it was just going to be ignoring that one glide and go for a minimalist run, which is still something I appreciate more than just the video ending as it's less about seeing you never doing a thing and more about how you can overcome the challenges the game throws at you. Perfection is great to strive for, and the videos that accomplish it are *really* good, but I think people are here typically for an enjoyable video that gives a satisfying conclusion more than anything else.
At the Cliff Town gem spot where you almost didn't get to, I was so pumped to see you make it there AND get enough gems to progress further, I literally just joyously punched my knees over and over while yelling "yes, yes, yes!". It also made me like and subscribe immediately. So I guess it's fair to say I somewhat enjoyed this video, and would be reasonably elated to see the Spyro 2 equivalent.
Oh, and about the Dream Weavers glide: It does kill the run in theory (imo), but your workaround was awesome because it would have been such a shame to not see just how many glides are in fact necessary. And therefore the challenge was completed - with an asterisk (imo). So thank you for this!
run died in dream weavers, but I also really like seeing the whole game attempted under the rule set and not just going "ope guess we can't, video over."
Don't know if it's possible, as I've never seen it in the Dreamweavers homework, but you might be able to do a hitbox exploit to launch yourself across those chasms. That's where you jump at an enemy just as they try to attack you. Basically, Spyro's hitbox is spherical & enemy hitboxes change shape when they attack & when the two collide at the wrong time, the game's physics completely freaks out. Even still, I don't know for sure I'd that would get you across the chasms.
Spyro was the first ever game i had for ps1 and loved replaying it on the trilogy remaster! Nice to see people doing things with this game! ♥
new speedrun category invented. glitchless minimum glides
For the most part, some of these mistakes were simply "I gave up too early" and it is great you figured out how to overcome that. I do believe the run died at Dream Weavers but I do accept the compromise so all in all, this was a successful run... just not the way you intended
I’ll approve this run. Not collecting anything on the way to the balloonist made you push the game to get those last 53 gems.
The fact that you were able to get the treasure in the back of Cliff Town was the best part of this run. The first time I played the game back in '98 or whatever, that was the last treasure in the game I found before Gnasty's Loot. I didn't use any type of guide, and I never used the Sparx cheat in the later games to find the treasure, but the other two games had much less hidden treasure.
I love the fact that it did fail, but you went and finished it with the minimum amount :)
I'm binging your videos and I truly hope the algorithm picks them up soon, you definitely deserve it.
Thanks a lot, the comments are helping a lot 😁
Love your accent! This was on my recommended and I love watching challenge videos. I still think you absolutely smashed it! Great stuff.
I love this challenge you did.
Personally I have collected as much possible without charging on one file and without using your fire ability on another file on the PS1.
I would love to see how the sequels without gliding will go 😁
Thank you, I did wonder about both of those challenges, but felt they were more required over gliding in the first game. I definitely need to try this out on Spyro 2 one day 🙂
Except that one necessary glide, your effort to get anything done past the 50% completion is outstanding. Finally even beating the boss, getting some interesting insides as you figured out some interesting jump opportunities nobody else would have considered before.
"Spyro, press triangle to hover near a ledge to gain a little extra height."
Spyro 1: lol, charge height go vrooom.
The run didn't die at dream weavers, it just turned into a teenager.
Ludicrous dedication my friend, well done!
Bro your video quality is fantastic. Hope the almighty algorithm will deliver and bless you
17:05. tbh sometimes the balloonist on eachworld sometimes recommends a level so if patient enough could get it to recommend a dream weaver level you could do without gliding. so theoretically you can beat spyro 1 without gliding just by getting jaques as the recommended level
Can they recommend levels outside of their own world? Because if Marco only talks about Artisan levels, it'll be a moot point.
@@DrRank I think so. I'm not 100% on that Im aware of the whole recommended level but never intentionally encountered it outside of accidental interaction with the baloonist
OK I'm back with more intel. Recommendations can only come from Tuco (Magic Crafters balloonist), and he can only recommend a level that has an Egg you haven't found. Eggs don't even appear after Magic Crafters, so this strategy is pointless.
@@DrRank oh. Good job on finding out.
Spyro and Ratchet and Clank 1-3 were my favorite games from insomniac
And I love to see these kind of videos because it answer my question I had as a kid XD
I think stopping the run midway because you had to glide would have been a great shame because the other worlds past it are fun to see play out. Yes you can’t beat it without gliding but you can do it with 1 glide and that’s still to be commended!
Crazy thing is, it has actually been done without gliding now. So it seems way more than ever is now possible without gliding!
Just casually showing how to reach the hardest secret area to find in the entire game right in the intro
I greatly appreciate the effort taken to not pick up anything in dream weavers, I think that was a good way to see the run through even though it was dead. Love to see great Spyro content!
Thank you, Spyro 2 with the same challenge is the next upload 😀
It may not be "without gliding", but it is a run with "one glide only".
This one was super fun I personally think with the restriction implemented while it doesn't eliminate the glide it reintroduced a challenge.
Honestly I am kind of glad the glide happened because it made the run even more ridiculously difficult (in a fun way of course) 😁
I love your videos keep ém coming lol
To be fair, you could have gotten to the Haunted Towers Portal without Gliding, it was just an extremely hard jump, but well done getting past that hurdle.
I'd say the two required glides do make the challenge a failure, but it's always interesting to see how close we can get anyway.
Run was dead but also...that was a really fair comprise
This was very entertaining. I think the compromise was fair for the purpose of completing the video, to see how many times in fact a glide is actually needed.. but yes, overall with the objective being no gliding.. it’s a fail. So impressed by the cliff town jump you made I audibly gasped when you did it. 😂
You didn't fail. The only glide was forced by the game itself. All the other times you succeeded. That one glide was necessary to finish the game, not to get an egg, gem or to rescue a dragon. And for that you deserve a sub
Spyro 1 & 2 are among my top few favorite video games ever and ive played thousands over my life, theyre that good and they absolutely hold up today as still so fun
It sucks that Dream Weavers were the only thing killing your run. I tried to do Spyro 1 without charging. I made it all the way to Gnasty Gnorc before realizing that the run was dead because i couldn`t catch up to Gnasty... such a shame
It is a shame for sure, but your run seem like a much bigger shame! All the way to the end and you couldn't do the final boss 😵
Then how did you do Tree Tops?
@@theofficialliedetector1545 I mean, you don't have to do Tree Tops. They probably just skipped it.
Dude this is the first vid I've seen but all of your content looks quality! Subbed and eagerly perusing your portfolio!

"without any gliding" ceartainly failed at dream weavers, however at this point it is now an experiment to see how few times you need to glide to beat the game
I saw a series quite a few years ago with the same conceit, and thought I remembered the challenge being completed there. I tracked it down, and it turns out that by jumping during the deceleration from a charge, you can get a bit more distance and actually make those "impossible" jumps in the Dream Weavers home world- and from there, there's no more issues.
ruclips.net/video/4Vrj9xqqxVo/видео.html
Ah yes, I have actually seen this before, but I wanted to avoid it as (and I sorta mentioned this in my rules) I wanted to avoid pressing X in mid-air entirely, as this trick seemed like a by-product of gliding. I should have mentioned it properly I suppose. This is actually one of the earliest videos I made despite it being the 3rd one uploaded, so I feel I improved as I went on. Thank you for watching :)
@@NGPlusVideos he doesn't use X in mid air to be fair. That's also banned from his run. He charges jumps, lands, jumps again and then charges out of it.
I actually finished off all of the things he missed = ruclips.net/video/HOmPYL1adrM/видео.html
Yes you're right, in the 6 months since I commented that, I now realise that this game is now very possible glide-less
@@NGPlusVideos huge respect for the acknowledgement. I enjoyed the video for what it's worth
I just realised that you used to be part of Defending the Game channel, unless I'm mistaking. Love the video.
That is correct, thank you 😁
@@NGPlusVideos Yes! ...... However, I believe that your Spyro No Glide challenge doesn't have any updated facts and your Metal Gear Solid No Walk challenge does have updated facts - I did notice that.... You might want to double check that though....
23:37 I didn’t think it was possible to beat this without gliding but to only make the one main glide in dream weavers world and beat it is pretty amazing
You have more patience then I'd ever have.
Really enjoyed the video. Unlucky about Dream Weavers, but definitely wouldn't consider a failure overall. Good luck with the sequels.
Seriously - I wouldn't even have thought of forbidding the whirlwinds. But yeah, in Dream Weavers there would be the end of this challenge anyway. This was very enjoyable to watch, especially your risky jumps or other conclusions you found out! I would like a second part of this challenge with Spyro 2! (It should actually be easier there because you have the double jump...)
Spyro 2 is on the way 😁
@@NGPlusVideos YUSS
I was so excited to see Dream Weavers since it's my favorite realm, only for the whole place to get skipped 😂 really cool to know that 1 is the minimum number of required glides though
The original spyro is also my favourite game of all time I just love it grew up with the game beaten it 100% so many times I can't even count I just adore the game so many memories and just such a charming game
You got really close to the left platform in Dreamweavers. I wonder if you could've used that height exploit (where you do a 180) to get just a little bit more distance.
I just wanna say that you are doing an absolutly astonishing Job at all these challenges! I really appreciate your effort and its just a matter of time until you blow up! Keep it up man! Cheers :-)
I found your channel in my recommended list, and as a new viewer I love your dedication to these challenges. Maybe someday you can try beating Spyro 2 and 3 without gliding, it'll be interesting to see if that's even possible.
Am I the only person who actually likes Tree Tops!? It was honestly one of my favourite levels first time around. I bought this game with my saved up pocket money when it first came out (I was about fourteen) and have lovely memories of sitting in our garage (where the PSX and all the 'kids stuff' me and my sisters used to play with were in there, as we had a small house and it was out of the way!). I had my Nans old record player next to my squashy chair and would be playing her old LPs from the 70s, spending hours figuring out the levels. I remember being so flipping happy when I finally managed all the chained up super-charge runs on this level! My husband I replayed it on an emulator fairly recently and it holds up so well. Insomniac did an amazing job stretching the limitations of the time. The levels are so well designed.
I like Tree Tops really. It's grown on me. Pun not indended
@@NGPlusVideos Maybe not intended, but appreciated!
Again with New Rewarding Challenges could help make Spyro’s Free Flight Ability Fun
That would be the perfect idea for Spyro 4 me thinks 🤔
When I first went to Alpine Ridge, I thought it said Airplane Ride and I was wondering where the airplanes were.
I'm pretty sure you can get through the giant metal ant cave without powerups. Spyro does mention that he hates those bugs which would imply that he went through the cave even though you could bypass it entirely.
And now it's time for everybody's favorite level, the Tree Tops.
I'm surprised you didn't realize that outrunning the metal ants is an option.
I'm happy to finally be making progress again... (Falls to his death) Oh no.
The second game is called Ripto's Rage. Glimmer is only one level so it's weird that a Spyro game has that in the title.
Yeah, I went back to the Ant Cave and ran passed them eventually. Not sure why I didnt try that the first time tbh
I count it as a win, because it is too mandatory for the one over world. It is the one exception since there is literally no other way to move around the place.
When a "No X run" fails, you can always switch to a minimalist run, that's the beauty of minimalist runs.
spyro definitely still holds up as a great game... the movement is good, graphics are acceptable and the gameplay is so much fun
Seeing as you beat some of the seemingly impossible jumps, I wouldn't be suprised if, with a metric ton more peristence, the one last glide could be shaved off.
Can 100% confirm, this run will die at Dream Weavers - it is however possible to get the 50 Dragons required to get past the Beast Makers balloonist.
Regardless if the run isn’t or is possible I’m glad that you see through them with the compromises
i just found this video and not only did i love it but also your accent
Brought here from Game Grumps Lovelies. Keep up the great work
"Spiro but the dragon is afraid of heights"
The first Spyro was the very first game I ever played and the original trilogy make up three of my favorite games ever.
Nothing wrong with a tainted run every now-and-again. 😂
I feel like this isn't a failure because these runs are for science. The question was posed, the answer was recieved. That's all we can ask for, right? Succesful test
To me, there's two kinds of glides. Controllable glides - IE the ones which you only had to do one for - and uncontrollable glides - these are the ones the portals put you into, as well as the whirlwind until they spit you out.
The no controllable glides challenge would be a Success* (the asterisk is because the only thing stopping it is the fact that you have to reach each balloonist in order to unlock the next hub world - if the game unlocked hub worlds by reaching the requirements when in any world, then it would be a success)
It's been discovered that you can jump charge to the edge, and then quickly jump charge again to just clear the gap. So it's fully doable now!
One of the Dream Weaver Dragons is a monstrous pain in the ass to get. It's not as complicated as Tree Tops and all of those super charges to get to the last platform though.
9:35 - You lost your momentum because you hit the ceiling. It's in the video man, what?
i don't think that caused the loss of momentum, (spyro 1, idk abt 2 and 3) supercharge doesn't really seem to care what you bump against as long as it doesn't bring you to a full stop. more likely the supercharge just was cancelled out by going up the ramp backwards.
that aside, the weird part isn't actually the fact that the momentum was gone, it was that the supercharge animation was still playing despite the fact spyro was... visibly not supercharging anymore XD if you lose your momentum in a supercharge the animation is supposed to go back to spyro's normal charge.
This video inspired me to try glideless on the other two games. Sadly, Gateway to Glimmer died at around 41% completion and I managed a measly 10% in Year of the Dragon (you just can NOT get through Cloud Spires). Even changing it to a minimum glides challenge, I haven't been able to get lower than around ten glides for both. Still, I'm impatient and a determined gamer would definitely find solutions where I couldn't.
I highly recommend giving it a go. I discovered routes that are quicker without gliding and you can get pretty creative with the limitation. High Caves in Spyro 1 is straight up the best to do this way. I'm never gliding in that level again lol.
I am editing Spyro 2 right now. I found ways to get a fair bit higher than 41% 😁
@@NGPlusVideos I'm excited! Can't wait to see how to got past the bits I couldn't.
Spyro 2 was my first videogame. Even if I still have it, and I still have a PS2, I think I never finished it
Amazing run, you may have had to glide once but that in of itself is amazing
just came across this and loved these games! gonna watch all of them! :) love the nostalgia
Hi! I love your contents and I'd really like to live personally these challenges!
Here's what I think:
IMO, saying "no glide" has not the same meaning of "no wings", nor of "no fly". So, there are some considerations to make.
1) We consider "to glide" a state where Spyro is using wings to go farther. This would include double X button, whirlwinds AND entering a level. In this case the run dies in world 1.
2) We consider "to glide" the 1) BUT only in the cases in which you CAN control Spyro. That would exclude entering a level but not whirlwinds.
3) We consider "to glide" the 2) but when Spyro is put to a gliding status automatically it is not our fault and it is not illegal, BUT we must land asap by pressing triangle.
4) We consider "to glide" only the input action, so only pressing X in the air.
I think the most reasonable interpretation is the point 2, so no whirlwinds but fly levels are allowed because there you FLY, you don't and can't GLIDE; same thing for the Gnasty's Loot level. Said that, the first problem to solve is to rescue 50 dragons without whirlwinds, the second one is the jump in world 5. If the first problem is not solved, the run is dead in world 4, but if in some way it is possible to solve both problems, than we must see if the challenge can be fulfilled with the treasure in fly levels excluding the amount you collected using whirwinds
Gotta love how whirlwinds are put over glitches in this run when at a last resort
10:06 Actually, Beast Makers is the FOURTH home world (after Artisans, Peace Keepers and Magic Crafters).
I just remembered, I have Reignited on my Switch, maybe I should return to that
'Can you beat Spyro The Dragon without gliding?' *Spyro proceeds to glide in the loading screen* . . . welp. . .
Joke aside, this video was great. I love Spyro content like this, it's easily one of the most influential games of my childhood.
So only 1 mandatory glide is very impressive considering other challenges of a similar vein, where once they hit the mandatory wall those numbers start rapidly increasing.
It's been discovered that you can jump charge to the edge, and then quickly jump charge again to just clear the gap. So it's fully doable now!
It’s a shame that the only Spyro game I had the misfortune of playing was Enter the Dragonfly.
Tree tops is legit my favorite level. Call my crazy.
I really enjoyed this challenge run! Tbh I don't think that glide would be a complete end to the run, because the fact you avoided all treasures and dragons in that home world was a fair sacrifice. I wasn't much of an adventure game fan, by I did play spyro as a young teen and I loved every bit of it, and the music of the levels were pretty jamming ngl haha! Watching this video was very nostalgic, I'm already 30 but damn I wouldn't mind playing spyro again cus it's such a fun game!
This is way better than the other Spyro challenges. The glitches ruined the other challenges imo.
Technically gliding and flying are two different things, when gliding you slowly lose height, while you dont when flying
Yeah, I would've allowed flight levels. It's a shame that doesn't help for Dreamweavers though.
It's been discovered that you can jump charge to the edge, and then quickly jump charge again to just clear the gap. So it's fully doable now!
I bet it would be much easier to beat Spyro 2: RIPTO'S RAGE than Spyro 1. It focuses more on tasks than exploration.
