I started recording this over two years ago, and I never finished it. But after looking back at my two year old gameplay, I decided that I sucked. So I remade it all for this video! I ended up having to move from using the original PS1 disk to a ROM half way through recording the challenge run, so that's why the aspect ratio alters ever so slightly part way through. Sorry about that.

Semantically, I call this a win. The game code may disagree, but there is a semantic difference between glide and flight. This means you are technically allowed to do flight levels and kill Ripto. Rip the other stuff though; semantics can't save you there.
I would include aided flight but I'm curious how far you can get without trick/glitch jumps.
No gliding unless it HARD requires you to glide.( looking at you Ripto)
One of the rules is "no gliding or flying" so semantics can't help there. Flight does break the rules.
Technically you are correct that it shouldn't count as gliding but.. it's still against the spirit of the challenge to use spyros wings in any capacity. You can't just semantics your way through difficult parts of a challenge, sometimes if you set out to see if a game is beatable under certain conditions you gotta be prepared for the answer to be 'no' sometimes.

No joke, I've completed Spyro 2 hundreds of times since childhood. *Hundreds*. I know everything about this game. My favorite game ever.

I was separated from my dad who had the PlayStation for years so I didn’t get to complete it that many times and I didn’t even get to play much of Year of the Dragon until I reunited with my dad when I was 21 but then his PlayStation broke before I could finish it.
I would have completed it hundreds of times of it wasn't for the fact my disc for it got scratched in such a way that it always froze when trying to go into Gulp's boss fight. Which really sucked

I think it would have been nice if you included "minimum glides / flies" as a bonus to see how many you needed for 100%.
Great job with this one! After a few attempts, I was able to complete Spyro 2 (Reignited Version) without gliding! You still must use the first whirlwind from Breeze Harbor, but everything else in the game is do-able with some tough jumps and planning. There is no double-jump in this version so it makes it very interesting to do.
Amazing video! It's a pity there is no way to skip Ripto's third phase, it would be incredible to be able to beat the whole game glideless
Well, if the goal is to get the final cutscene and credits, then all that's needed is getting to Dragon Shores, and getting into the theater. Speedrunners actually do this for certain categories to get all the abilities normally obtained from Moneybags, without paying him for the abilities, as it's the cutscene that triggers unlocking all the stuff that Moneybags would normally require payment for.
It never ceases to amaze me how people have managed to break this game in two. That double frog proxy is LUDICROUS.
You can actually skip having to get to Dragon Shores during a no gliding run by simply restarting a file where you already got 100% and activated the powerup. The game will give you the superflame powerup from the beginning, and the code to turn it on and off still works. The NTSC version definitely has this trick, though I don't know about the PAL version.

I think you might need to do that where it's 2 100% files. Just a simple copy to another tile though.
I always liked having each tile for each homeworld.
Your dedication to do these ridiculous things, no matter how difficult the method may be to pull off and how many attempts it may take, is truly astonishing!

Also it is possible to get the 75 gems on the platform without TAS. If you shoot the baskets with a fireball, sometimes the gem will fall off, and you automatically collect any gems that fall off like this. If you keep trying, eventually each gem will fall off

I don't think gliding and flying are really the same thing. Utilizing flight portals would be fine as far as I'm concerned. Charging out of whirlwinds should be the same. Regardless, well done and I'm looking forward to future videos!

These glitches are absolutely insane! I really hope Spyro 3 only requires 1 glide to complete the one glide trilogy.
Man, that last group of gems in Metropolis looks like it was painful to acquire. It's so cool watching people break the game open and do all this amazing stuff though!

I can't wait for spyro 3. The previous 2 games had some sort of glitch that makes you jump further but I don't think there are any in the final game. So 'Can You Beat Spyro 3 Without Gliding?'
Spyro isn't flying during the final phase of Ripto, he just learnt to walk in the air. He is only acting like he is flying because he doesn't want people to know of his new power.
I played Spyro for the first time in about 2017 when I found copies of Spyro 2 and 3 in a second hand shop for a measly $4 AUD each.
Gotta say, Despite being in my mid twenties, and thus not having nostalgia goggles, I really enjoyed them. I’m a fan

This is delightfully unhinged. Whirlwind makes Spyro glide for 1 (ONE) frame - banned! Amazing, that's my kind of insane. And of course I agree with the verdict - no gliding whatsoever for you, Spyro, not even for a frame. Clip those wings.
Awesome video as always! I rememberd the Ripto Boss as the video started and really wanted their to be a way around it such a shame but to get that high on completion is impressive!

Also, not sure you are taking game suggestions, but the original Tomb Raider from '98 has some cool speedrunning techniques to it. Watching you try to break it in a challenge run could make for a good time! Anyway fantastic video, look forward to seeing more from you!

@@NGPlusVideos The only thing that comes to mind in terms of blocking your abilities in game would be, no grabbing ledges. No idea if that would be viable, but other than that I don't think there is much else to stop Lara from doing lol. At least not without making the game impossible.

Specifically, gliding is not being able to fly up, and flight/flying IS being able to fly up. Just my two cents, still a sold video and was a brilliant watch.

Imo saying "No" to flying is a bit strange, because flying and gliding are different things! So I'd say you did win!
The original 3 Spyro games and Crash Bandicoot games holds up 100% to this day.
My favorite level as well this and one of the turtle levels I had a demo set for my ps1 back in the day that I use to stay on

this and the vid you did on the first game have inspired me to try this on my own in the third game! i think it'll be pretty interesting to see what kind of things can and can't be pulled off, and a new and fun way for me to play this game for the 100th time XD

well i can tell you right now that the first big roadblock i found just playing casually is Cloud Spires. you can get to the portal with a charge into a jump, but past that, there's almost immediately a gap too wide to get across without gliding. i guess it's time to glitch dig! something i've never actually done for these games before. shame the double jump isn't in 3 :(
welp, my run has turned into a minimum glide run, as every skip i've managed to find for cloud spires has required gliding. i wish you luck on trying to finding a skip that works, cuz i do really wanna see that level beat! hopKid might have cracked it with some proxy jump stuff but i am Very Bad at those XD

Fun fact: I'm from the US so it wasn't called gateway to glimmer where I'm from, It was called riptos rage. Although I think gateway to Avalor would have been a better name since glimmer is only the first level

thinking about how the trilogy got easier, as with the Crash trilogy, has me wanting and dreading Spyro the Dragon 4
it is impressive to see how much you can accomplish but I knew that without any major glitch, the final boss fight would the straw that breaks the camels back cause flyight is mendatory...

Spyro 2 will always be my favorite.
Did I miss something, does he know about double charge jump? Or is that a frame of gliding? Idol Springs and hurricos can we done without gliding, just use the double charge jump.

gotta love me some spyro 2 at least you diddnt have to use the gulp skip and fireball skip i sent you via DM cause those are time consuming when it comes to learning them haha so im glad you either did it the proper way or found a easier skip
I actually practiced Gulp skip and got it once. But it seems to need a Glide to get the positioning right. Thanks for the help :)

So I knew you could get onto the pipe with a double jump, but could never get on it without it. And with my rules being no glitches, I couldn’t use it. But hey congrats on getting farther then I did!
Colossus was the easiest level by far for me. Oh well on to Spyro 3

Could you attempt spyro 2 gemless? I believe it could be possible but the one at the end of glimer seems impossible to avoid. Would love to see you attempt it
Ah, Spyro 2 is quite my favorite. Always nice to see some OOB stuff and glitches. The only real experience with that was in reignited. I was able to complete some overly hard and fringe glitch ideas to be able to explore the cut Cowboy Dino Arena area (was quite proud of myself) and the cut hidden cave in the fireworks factory (the butterfly powerup was placed there floating in mid air still?). The powerup is curious since they mentioned they lost all the master files so rebuilt the game themselves. Why include a cut hidden area consumable?
