    When I first found your channel I loved your personality and how you aren't so strict. you have some humour. the name was familiar and i just realized my 2 manga books are your's. so this is cool to see you're a real person and you aren't all stuck up like you'd expect from a pro artist.

    The 'lines' are called filaments. 'hooks' and 'barbs' connect the filaments of pennaitious feathers

    Hey Mark, I've been watching your videos since 2009 or something like that and I've probably watched every topic video and every q&a video you made at least twice. I love being able to work on my college art projects while listening to you talk about art related topics - it's just nice to have something to think about while drawing. And you are really the only youtuber I've found who never stresses me out or leaves me with negative feelings. All that to say: Thanks for what you're doing.

    I have always struggled using colour. I feel like I don't understand it enough to know how to use it (like where you used the yellow under the green to change the effect). I guess it's all practise but I hate the idea of spoiling a picture by colouring it badly while I'm learning :P

    • @AlexisAlexander646
      @AlexisAlexander646 8 лет назад +1

      Two things that can help with this is one, remember that you're first sketch is just a sketch. It might look nice but it may never feel fully finished (Unless you did some major shading with it) so just go for it! Two, try going to your printer and attempt to make a copy of your drawing then color either the original or copied version, so you'll always have an old version you can keep just in case you don't like the finished result. What helped me get into colored pencil at first was me just telling myself that I was gonna make a drawing that WILL be colored. I won't think about it, I already decided it before I started drawing, so if it fails, it fails. Also, make sure you have the right colors you want before you start, because if you go into a drawing and start coloring, but don't have the right colors, it'll be a lot harder and probably will make it look less good. Hope this helps :)

    • @kzzinsky
      @kzzinsky 8 лет назад

      That is some really excellent advice! The copy idea is really good - and it makes so much sense what you say about starting with the intention of doing a coloured drawing; I had never thought about it like that, but you are totally right! Thank you :)

    • @AlexisAlexander646
      @AlexisAlexander646 8 лет назад +1

      kzzinsky I'm really glad it helped! :D Another tip I can give is that you should make a color palette of all your different colored pencil colors on a separate piece of paper. Put a little square or circle of each color, and the name next to it so you know it. What this lets you do is when your looking for a certain shade, you can just look at this palette and once you find the color, you find the name then look through your collection. It also helps you know exactly how each color looks on paper without having to rely on the barrel (Since sometimes it's inaccurate, especially with different colored papers). Just something I though I'd share

      omg. me too! i bought some nice coloring books, have prismacolor pencils and started watching all these coloring videos...and now i'm afraid to start coloring the pictures in these really nice books because I don't want to ruin it!

    • @AlexisAlexander646
      @AlexisAlexander646 7 лет назад +6

      Kat T They're coloring books! They're meant to be colored! Colored pictures almost always look better than just black and white ones, especially in those coloring books. C'mon, a coloring a book is made to color in, not to cherish each page like you made it. All you're doing is filling in the white space in those books, so do it. It'd be a waste of money otherwise

    I hope you include this image in your next book. Being able to see you demonstrate and hear you describe your colored penciling technique makes more sense than "Switching to colored pencils, begin gradually building up a secondary layer of color" (Leaf, step 3). Another thing that would be helpful is to know how long it actually takes you to draw each image (like that it took, what, 8 hours to draw your eyes). Oh, and it is great to see that you are right-handed!

    Hey Mark, have you ever done a video on how to "observe" or maybe how to visualize?
    When you are putting pencil/pen to paper, the step that has already taken place is the idea or the observation. You have by that point already an idea of what your drawing will look like and the video becomes about the execution of the drawing.
    Just an idea. Thanks.

    The 'glowing' colours on peacock feathers are called 'Iridescent colours', which are created structural colouration. They're bright because they're not pigments, but micro-structures that reflect only certain wavelengths of light.

    • @bogdandochitanu2655
      @bogdandochitanu2655 8 лет назад +8

      You are your biggest critic. It's a normal thing to not like your art because most of the time you are comparing it to someone else's. Try not to be so harsh on yourself and have fun.

    • @dannyfz

    • @chancewix762
      @chancewix762 8 лет назад +2

      It's the artist's curse. We feel like there is a way of getting something right and we fear the outcome. But I find it more enlightening to learn "fuck it" because funnily enough when worrying way too much about your lines you make them worse. Try to loosen up. And another problem I myself try to fight is thinking there is any right way to draw something. Because funnily enough, professionals actually intentionally shift a few details or proportions, and they look better than what's correct. So just Learn to loosen up and realise you are your own worse critic. A way of getting past that fear of being shit other than saying fuck it, is comparing your newer works to older ones and seeing why they work and don't work. It will not only make you better next time you draw but it will also make you more condor table with what you make because it gives you that sense of change and improvement you need

    Whenever I color something, there are always small white spaces between the lines, is there a specific coloring technique, or does the color pencils’ quality matter?

    I really love the colors of a peacock feather, your Mitsubishi brown looks more like a green, 😊, I hope you don't mind if I make a couple of comments or questions as I watch you color your feather? BTW great start ,😍
