Kind of an underrated scene. People always complain how Aeris' death didn't phase them, but really her death was much more of a plot device than an emotional moment. I think this scene is far more emotional.

Especially considering that her Level 4 Limit Break was so god tier, if she lived past Disc One, she would have broken the game. There would have been virtually no reason not to keep her in every party. While her death did have an emotional depth that has rarely been equaled in the 20 years since the release of this game, she had the potential to be way too overpowered in the late game. Sephiroth knew that she, and she alone, was the greatest threat to his plans. That's why she had to die. For those who are unaware, her Level 4 limit break, Great Gospel, cleansed all negative status effects, fully restored HP and MP, AND made the party invulnerable for a few rounds. All you'd need to do would be to load her up with caster materia, throw a Hyper on her, and she would be unstoppable. Add a Phoenix-Final Attack materia combo, and you have just redefined the word
      'OP'.

4:07, man doesn't this part kick my ass every time :'(
Edit: What makes this video clip better, is that starting 3:18 the timing of the score perfectly matches the dialogue, the falling tears, howling, the camera panning upward. Maximum emotional impact.

I feel sorry for the older generations who will never experience things like this simply because they come from a time when gaming means funny noises and side scrolling. Games like this can do things films can never get close to because they aren't constrained by time.
You cant compare an experience of character development in a 2 hour movie to a game spanning 100 hours.

Hurricane Floyd no kidding, same here actually.

      Hurricane Floyd
Offended? The fact is it's true. Many gamers both younger and older would never play a game like this. I'm sure i will miss out on games now I'm older myself and my tastes have changed. Also you're hardly older generation. This came out when i was in school so you must have been around mid twenties when you played it, that's hardly older generation.

Holy fuck how can they even try to recreate this in the remake? They'll fuck it up! The music is SO STRONG HERE! You need to emphasize the music please and not the voice acting. Voice acting is fine but put the focus on the music. And have good VOs. Pleeeease it could be good but how can it be better than this masterpiece?

I actually find it easier to be moved by scenes like this in older games where the graphics weren't perfect. Newer games just have that whole "uncanny valley" thing happening where the characters look too realistic without quite looking human. When it's something older, my brain fills in the blanks graphics-wise.
Beautiful scene, anyway. It never fails to move me to tears.

They need to make a video game hall of fame, but specifically for video game scenes. Or better yet make a museum dedicated to the best video game scenes of all time. I'll bet my life you will see this masterpiece of a scene there in a gold case behind a 3 feet thick sheet of pexi glass displayed on the most advance HD piece of viewable equipment we humans can create to give justice to this scene. *MUAH!!* take note Square-Enix!!

A hero who has never been mentioned, a hero who has ever been standing strong. One who has ever been there. The one who protected me always, never mentioned of his affords. One who has been nerver able to be noble, but the one who has performed his duty until his end, untlil the poisoned arrows of the GI turned his body into stone

One of the best things about this scene was the fact that you couldn't really see it coming. When you go through the cave you're not expecting something this touching to happen. You sound exactly like me. Thats the age I played it at, and am now 23. I've never really forgotten this game, not like all the others, this one just seems to stick with me. Especially this scene, and aerith dying. I remember the emotion, going through the adventure with the characters and feeling how they felt. I distinctly remember crying my heart out when Red XIII started howling sorrowfully. D': A tiny bit stronger now, but still brings a tear.

Agreed. The medium really shouldn't matter. When you watch a black and white movie, you should get immersed in the story and forget it has no color. When you watch a cartoon, if the story is interesting enough, you forget you're only watching drawings. Graphics are just the icing on the cake; they shouldn't make or break a game experience.
