I never played the game. I absolutely love this show. I was angry, scared, cold (the scenery is amazing) disgusted and then a crying mess when Joel finds Ellie. Bella is one of the best Actors I have seen of any age and gender. What emotion she displayed. Pedro Pascal - he doesn't need to verbalize anything. His face shows it all. Thanks for the recap!

Honestly I think the reason they didn’t adapt that savage run and gun moment is because it would undermine the impact of whats coming in the finale. I actually applaud that the show has purposely removed some moments of savage brutality on Joels part because they are building. Building his bond with Ellie, building the tension of what will happen with a cure, and building to a brutal brutal climax that ultimately divides your loyalty as an audience member. I cant wait to see how non gamers react to the finale!?

i am also one of those people who understand why you don’t have a ton of fighting infected, but totally agree that one scene of fighting the infected with David would have helped you think David was maybe a good guy more. That was how i felt in the game too. So when he drops the “crazy guy who was travelling with a girl” line it would have hit harder.

This was one of my favorite parts in the game. It represents the true moment that changes both Ellie and Joel forever. It’s the spark that ignites their path. And the point of them both being that father daughter duo. They did all of the major beats tremendously and that final moment where Joel comforts Ellie after her most savage and traumatizing life event “to date”, just cements their relationship. Love this love this love this!

I thought the "recovery" of Joel wasn't bad. It was fast but from what you said Kristian, it's faster in the game? I haven't played, but they went from the first penicillin shot to the next, his wound went from looking wet and infected to dry and healing. Plus, when your faced with death, that natural adrenaline does kick in. I did laugh when Joel stabbed the first guy and he was kinda getting a piggy back ride while still looking hobbled. I haven't played the game, I kind of could tell David was hiding something from the beginning by the way he spoke to the girl who lost her father, but never thought they were connected to the people that attacked Joel in the other episode, but when he let her go with the medicine I got a little confused and thought maybe he was a little weak. Very well made characters on this show. I just wish characters like David could survive more than one episode. I feel the show could be much longer, they've been finishing the villains in one episode.

The creators explain on the official podcast that the reason for not using the infected as the trust moment between Ellie and David was "the plot implications of a lot of infected running around out there that could get you at any moment would permeate throughout the episode and we wanted it to function a different way." The conversation was more intimate and shows how David manipulative David really was.

    • @writingref

Man - they always seem to have a "reason" for everything instead of just "we didn't have time or budget".
I don't really buy this excuse, because they clearly had sound audio designed to make the viewer afraid there are clickers in the woods when Ellie is hunting. Remember, they set up that hordes of infected only come if you activate the fungus somehow by touching or stepping on it. So showing a dude stepping on a tendril would eliminate the "any moment" part - because if you are careful in this version you don't activate the infected. Plus, having Ellie and David fight a dozen mushroom zombies makes her last ditch cry of "I'm infected!" even more believable to get David to stop.

@@adonisgeovanni5430 Potentially a valid assessment of me, since we are limited in this form of communication.
But are you truly more impressed with a lack of dangerous action forcing a false trust between Ellie and David, or are you more upset because you perceive me to be attacking the show runners? (Which I am not).
Because it feels like (again, with limited human interaction) your argument forces either a love or hate result, and does not allow for criticism of the story or their explanations for the story. Their arguments may have validity - but so do the counter arguments.
There are even hints they considered doing the action sequence in the show itself. For instance, the shed is designed to look exactly like the game. There are clicker-like noises echoing in the forest. They could have had the conversation anywhere.
My point is not that they are lying or don't have good reasons - just that a hidden reason is they did feel things had to be cut for pacing, and they aren't going to say that because why bite the hand that feeds you?

If I remember right the resort colony was mostly men. In this It was a mixture of old people, women, some kids, and the few able bodied men we saw.
This kinda kills the need for Joel to go on a killing spree to find his way to Ellie.
Joel wasn’t going to kill the kid and mother.
Another example of wanting to have things make sense in live-action causes some of the big action moments to become unnecessary

The lack of infected hasn't bothered me too much until this episode. I think they have used them too sparingly now and at this rate it seems like the back half of the season will not have had any (not counting left behind episode since that was a flashback). I like the focus on the human aspect/drama but it feels to me now like they are leaving out a vital part of the story, and growth in skills by Ellie, by practically eliminating them. I think they could've included some of the puzzle solving that helps them have to rely on each other and builds towards them being closer.

I loved it all as a fan of the game, pacing felt like a constant ramping was really smart of them to have the cutting table in the same building as the david fight, genius way to cut 30 minutes of gameplay traveling between.

Love this episode. But, a few problems that I had was...
    - Katherine getting 2 entire episodes, while David get's 45 minutes?
    - Felt like the story was being rushed a little bit. Could have been longer.
Felt like this episode could have been 2 episodes or, at least, an 90 minute episode...
    - Could have shown David saving and helping Ellie with infected attacking them, it did not have to be 10 - 20. A 3-4 infected vs. David and Ellie would have been nice to see and to showcase David as an ally. Felt the creepy vibes from his first appearance.
    - Have Joel be more involved towards his way towards Ellie. Let him stealth kill more of David's men on his way towards Ellie.
    - Have the David vs. Ellie battle longer. One of my biggest problems is that the action has been underwhelming. Could have had an extreme, intense showdown between the two.
    - Felt like they could have spent the first half of the episode (if they made it 90 minutes) about how David was this trustworthy character that helped Ellie and Joel, while also being the provider for his group, to then in the later half show how much of a creep that he is and how he is a cannibal.

    • @writingref
      @writingref Год назад

Yeah I think the showrunners will never ever say "If we had one more episode we would have done xyz" - what happens is HBO approves X number of episodes and Y amount of budget, so even with 15 more minutes this episode, it may have been about budget. They will say a bunch of other crap instead when they don't include certain things. And the reason for this is HBO can only take so much risk with a show if they aren't sure if it going to be a hit. In the next "season" we will get a lot more extended arcs.
Also We are only shown so many people as part of this community, so there are not a bunch of other bad dudes for Joel to take out on his way into town. There is only at most like one more guy besides David and Troy Baker's character. So They would have to hire several more actors just to be fodder.
But I would have found a way to make the mushroom zombie attack happen. It really should have.

I was suspicious when David questioned the faith of Troy Baker's character. He's meant to be a preacher and he's not talking about faith in God but faith in *himself* which kinda shows where he places himself among the people. The conversation with Ellie made me wonder if he was a good guy, but the "venison" remark in the kitchen and when he slapped Hannah and *especially* the way he said she'd always have a father, I got huuuuge predator vibes. The actor did a fantastic job riding the line between supposedly caring and secretly abusive.

I enjoyed the episode as it is but I can see where people who’ve played the games are expecting the two instances of action you mentioned. I understand why they made the decision not to include them but I can easily see tighter scenes that allude to those parts but add to the story and characters as presented here. If David and Ellie encountered an infected, even one incapacitated from the cold, and we could get a hint of how David sees the fungus that we learn later on.
Similarly, Joel could have encountered another person, maybe one of the goons where the bodies were or even the mother who questioned the stew meat. We could see how Joel reacts to either one in his desperation, perhaps adding to the idea we might have that he’ll make it in time to save her. Those people are going to find out what David and his men were doing at some point. I just think it would have been interesting if he encountered the wife of the man he killed. Now how does the mother react to Joel if she sees the bodies? Does she not care or does she tell him where David is? Her helping him save his daughter, despite what he did, would make the end where Joel and Ellie are taking their time leaving sit a little better with me. It’s a nitpick, but I was saying to my screen “Move your asses” as they walked away. But despite that, I enjoyed what they did.

What I love is the showrunners aim to take the audience to a range of emotions within a single episode than drag it along in 2-3 episodes. This could have easily been 3 episodes, but the formula they are doing to contain to 1 episode is making this work so well.

You should have stuck to watching before playing because now you go into episodes with expectations.
As far as Joel taking out the whole town, I think that would have been a bit much in live action. First of all, it was established these were a scared group of people who are probably cowering in their homes in the middle of a blizzard. Why would they be out and about, when they presumed there was a group doing the hunting? Not to mention that they are essentially just innocent civilians and it would have made Joel a bit too cruel just taking them out without them being a direct threat. The men David was relying on for muscle were already taken out by Joel. David and James were occupied with Ellie. In the game, the town was on high alert because Ellie escaped and was being hunted, and then just the sheer need to have gameplay. I just think having Joel kill people indiscriminately would have been too contrived and not added anything to the plot or the show.

Never played the games. I think, in retrospect, there was opportunity and material available to soft play David longer. Incorporate the scene of them fighting a couple infected to build audience trust, and then play up the tension between him and James to make the audience feel like even if David wasn’t a total “good guy” he was at least on the audiences side by seemingly protecting Ellie from James. They then could have done a bigger rug pull later by revealing that Davids actually the biggest monster there.
But all that said I think what they did was absolutely effective and fine. It wasnt better or worse, just one story telling choice over another.
I also really love they did not have Joel come in to save her. There’s so much symbolism to what Ellie goes through and that wouldn't be as effective if she didn’t do it alone. She literally and metaphorically passed through fire, her stumbling out of the burning building almost a rebirth. I can only imagine we are going to see substantial changes in her character as a result of what she went through. And Joel as well, I feel like the fact he didnt get to her sooner is going to be significant for him.

Feels like we do go long periods of time without seeing any. Maybe season 2 they will have a bigger budget and are able to have more set pieces with the infected.

Yeah - if this "cannibal cult" storyline was a two episode arc like the Kansas City Arc I feel like they could have made a lot of small improvements and given us more action. I think this is a result of HBO not being sure how popular the show would be. Now we will get a lot more extended arcs.

I find that expectations are never a good idea. Whether I know the source material or not I go in as a viewer with an open mind. Let the creative team make their choices and then just enjoy what happens.
And afterwards, I can decide fairly, about what they did or didn't do.
Expectations are always a set up for negative reactions. Because best case scenario they do what's expected, and worst case you feel let down.

Didnt play the game. I think Joel not fighting with anyone was fine. He was barely recovered and had had some action waking up. I knew he was looking for Ellie and felt his struggle. wondered a bit when noone showing up while the building was on fire but it is debatable. Maybe the fire and the smoke weren't visible yet to the townsfolk. Or maybe the townsfolk didn't care or were too afraid to do anything since David led them with fear.

Well, in the game this cult is clearly much bigger - and its implied there are no children. So making this cult of people have mostly women and children and a few dudes who do the fighting and killing of people means Joel (and Ellie) have already taken out almost every threat by the time Joel makes it to the resort.
There are six dudes who go looking for Joel and Ellie and Joel takes out three of them. Ellie takes out two. The episode leaves one survivor. Joel could have sniped him or something . . . but if I had my choice of action the zombie attack would have been fa more impactful

At no point did I think David was a good guy. I've never played the game, but he gave off cult leader vibes from the start. Also, from the context clues, it was clear what... they were eating when they talked about the lack of game and running out of rations. As soon as they said they'd wait til spring to bury the guy we were like 👀...uh huh.
At the end, we were definitely waiting for Joel to turn up and save Elie, so that ending was a surprise.
I didn't miss the infected until after the episode, and that's from watching reactors who've played the game. Some good points I heard were the fact that if Elie and David had fought infected together that would have more credence to his conversation about them being alike aside from him just being a certified creep. Also, your friend Greg Alba pointed out that in the game you always feel the threat of the infected and that they might pop up, and while it hasn't bothered me thus far, I definitely see that POV, because for me the biggest threat in this world feels like the f'd up people you might run into. As a non game player having that pointed out makes me more aware that I'm not really noticing if the infected show up or not.
    Enjoyed your reaction/review.

Bella Ramsey could play next X23 Wolverine. I'm glad some of shootout gameplay wasn't in game, it would get formulated where it's predictable but I agree seeing Joel shoot into place like a western would've been great I still think overall from adding guys getting stabbed and beaten with pipe is great substitute. It separated from the game without separating from the game. I'm glad it fade to black them walking away.

I agree that an early scene with infected would be nice, but was not necessary. It would be a nice tense sequence that further shows David and Ellie bonding/trusting each other via violence.
I’m far less on board for Joel shooting up anyone on his way to Ellie after he deals with the three who are trying to kill him. It’s a great gameplay sequence, but David’s crew are portrayed as heartless cannibal scavengers in the game. In the show, there are scared kids and families, so Joel showing up and killing more parents would be a far more villainous portrayal than the game’s more “justified” killing.
(And, of course, this TV version of Joel is older and less of a tank that the video game version… killing three guys with a still-infected wound in the harsh cold was plenty badass and brutal in my opinion.)
Without getting into spoilers of the season finale and Part II, I think they’ve got plenty of chances to make Joel into a killing machine with questionable morality.
Anyway, keep up the good work Kristian! As an old Collider fan, I’ve been finding my way back to your videos in recent months. You’ve been bringing your A-game and I look forward to your future Last of Us and Star Wars takes!

A little nitpick. Since they haven't shown Joel rampaging through the village, which is fine, they should've amped up the urgency to get there. Underline the fact that Joel is just a little too far away. A little too weak from his wound and too slow to save her.
A great episode, for sure, but if they gave the final moments just a tiny bit more time to show the desperation of both Ellie's and Joel's situations, the impact of the release, that she saves herself, plus Joel's relief would have hit a little harder.

I think this show added more to Elle and Joel. I played the game and everything from talking to creepy guy and making David pedi cannibal, escape, steakhouse on fire. The way they flesh out characters is great compared to the game we learn more about him. Ellie is a bad ass I think after this episode she could play Wolverine X23. Showing Joel voyage to get back to Ellie but she went Savage Ferrel Wolverine on David. Moment David caress Ellie hand he wanted more than equal. I thought it was risky taking vaccine for infection knowing it would kill Joel. I'm glad they took some parts of game out with tracking. This shows knows what to take out and expand more character. The worse than infected is humans. I'm sure see more infected on last episode. Be honest I like tv more than movies and this show validates it

I agree Joel should've had to take out at least a few people while sneaking through the town. He basically just walked into town and found her. The showrunners said it's for both fans of the game and those who haven't played it but I think you will get more out of the show if you haven't played the game first. I'm still thoroughly enjoying it but I am starting to feel the departures too much. It kind of feels like they lessened Joel. Being only 9 episodes he was incapacitated for basically 25% of the show. I think in their adapting and doing less with the clickers and infected I'm almost losing why Joel is supposed to be such a badass. IDK if people who haven't played the game feel the same though

I loved it, and I have to say I didn't miss not seeing Joel kill a ton of people. I thought it was implied that's what was happened, especially at the end when they were standing right next to the burning building but completely unconcerned about other people showing up. I figured he took out anyone that would have been a threat. And you're right, I completely expected him to bust in at the end, but he didn't and I cheered when Ellie took that pedo out. Great, great stuff!

Granted I agree it would of been cool to see the infected attack on Ellie and David as well as building trust between them. But thinking about it it would of just created too many plot holes in the world they have created. Like why haven’t Ellie and Joel bump into these horde of infected before. Plus the purpose of the Cordyceps is to attack its target’s colony and procreate itself, why would it be in a area where there is no people around?
