@@stephaniespain9849 I agree. Many of the episodes have been excellent but Ep3 stands out. It had excellent cinematography, acting, lighting, sound, sets, music, pacing, and emotional weight, all while echoing the themes of the series (the importance of love, of connection, of community, and the difference between a life of survival versus a life with meaning).
Less of a snooze fest, but mid at best. Are we gonna pretend we were worried something would even happen to ellie?!? or Joel for this matter? and you don't even have to had played the game to make those deductions. Plot armor is strong with these ones, grogu.
The scary part about David is he genuinely believes he is a good person. That he’s a savior and will be a great king with Ellie as his queen and even as he attacks her he calls it love. He doesn’t see it as an evil act. So frightening. Bella is so phenomenal, another episode leaving me in tears.
No I think he’s self aware he believes he’s smarter than everyone else and knows that he’s lying and manipulating people and tries to do it to Ellie like he knows he’s evil he likes the power and control over ppl when he assaulted her he don’t really believe that sht he just wanted to torment her that’s why he said “ my fav part is the fighting back” he’s not delusional that he the new messiah or nothing like that
I’m not sure about that, although I get where you’re coming from. David admits that he’s always had a violent heart , so I don’t think he’s deluded himself into thinking he’s a good person, but rather he’s just so unapologetically evil, and he likes it. He has no empathy or humanity, and he feels superior or powerful because of that. I think it’s equally terrifying though, because there’s no way to bargain with someone like that, or even understand them. The only way to deal with them is to kill them, and tragically it was Ellie that had to do it. David was so evil that even though he lost, he took part of Ellie down with him, he forced her into a situation where she couldn’t win. Yes she survived, but she’s broken
Everyone believes they're a good person. That is how people do the casual evil that so many people do. If they truly recognize that X is bad, there is always a justification. And the sociopaths, psychopaths, and narcissists don't care.
Why is no one talking about the comparison of this community with the one we just saw 2 episodes back ("Kin" I think)? In that episode we're shown how a community can survive and thrive when it works together -- when everyone pitches in and has shared leadership and shared work/property (even though they have to be vigilant and be OK having a reputation as ruthless). This is as opposed to "Silver Lake" in this episode which is dominated by one person who makes all the decisions and controls everyone and everything. It contrasts dictatorship/authoritarianism with a democratic/community that takes care of its people. Also the comparison of Tommy as a father to David as a father...
This episode was surprisingly good. They honored the game very well. I only was a bit disappointed that they didn’t include Ellie and the cult leader killing all those clickers and the bloater.
This acting from Bella is what I wanted the directors ask from Maisie with Arya. I always saw Sansa and Arya as foils to one another as in Arya would be wild, emotional, and out of control. There should have been a maniacal sadness to the extreme outbursts of rage and vengeance, not some cool smirking confidence.
I disagree. The story of Arya is about enjoying death and violence until in the final season she is confronted twice with the face of death that actually scares her and makes her come back.
Man… Bella’s acting is what carry’s this in so many ways not that the other actors like David and Joel weren’t good but just the pure terror and rage and then just sadness and relief that Bella shows in the last ten minutes is so insane. The actor that played David did a great job of showing as beau mentioned the malice that had been hidden under the surface but in the end is just a complete monster. Like when he has her pinned and she spits on him and he’s like oh the fighting is the best part it makes my fucking skin crawl…. Also getting Joel’s famous torture scene was incredible and I love them showing more and more of just how cut throat Joel is.
Ellie showing her monster side while destroying another monster was epic again. Joel showing what it takes to get information while interrogating someone, Fast is downright scary. Next week we get to see video game mode Joel as he drops bodies like he going for tactical nuke in MW!
So agree that Scott Shepherd nailed David. The combination of creepiness and charisma was so perfect when he and Ellie were waiting for James by the fire. Ellie was getting pulled in by his storytelling - and so was I!
Exactly. I bet it was only David and James. Ellie killed a deer quickly. In winter they can store multiple animals. Like Tommys Community had food, electricity and shared responsibility.
The adaptation def doubled down on David's creepy and horrifying side but I think Joel showed up after Ellie had her revenge is really important because logically David had the key on him and he locked the door, so it wouldn't make sense for Joel stopping her and calming her down in the restaurant. And more importantly it's a highlight of Ellie's inclination to extreme violence when seeking revenge and she's very capable of it which also foreshadowed her story in part 2. Bella did a fantastic job this ep, the last 5 min is so hard to watch because I'm beyond horrified for Ellie and feel for her pain, and by the end I know that sassy silly happy lil Ellie was never the same ever again. It just so sad to see her childhood being robbed from her by so many traumatic events.
I agree it heightened the sheer violence and terror in that scene that Joel wasn't there to pull her away from David in that moment. But I'm also kind of bummed, like many others I've seen in comments, that it kind of introduced this weird element that you now _see_ that there's nobody else coming for them when they get out of there, even though David shot like 5 times as Ellie escaped from James and himself, and the building was on fire. It can still be explained somewhat; the building probably wasn't showing signs of smoke just yet for someone to pay attention to it and already be out there to catch Joel and Ellie outside; there also seemed to be a pretty windy storm out as Joel was approaching in the first shots we see of him in the resort, so David's group were perhaps just all huddled up inside and didn't hear the shots; David henchmen were probably pretty much all dead from Joel and Ellie decimating them, etc. But I couldn't help but being a bit taken out of that ending because of that on the first watch, and I would have hoped it was a bit more explicit _why_ they could just walk away unhindered. The way it's handled in the game doesn't have that problem since they don't really show them actually walk away from that building where Ellie kills David. Still a great episode and a great way to adapt that scene, but a bit of an annoyance there for me.
The show has a pacing problem. It needed more episodes to flesh out the story. I think another 2-3 episodes would've helped significantly especially if you're gonna include the Bill & Frank arc and Kathleen storyline That being said it's still one of the best video game adaptions we've ever had
I only played the game through the Pittsburgh section. The show has felt paced just fine to me (I think because I have zero expectation or knowledge of whatever is to come). Nothing feels slow, or rushed, or incomplete, or padded out. Instead it just feels super tight -- great economy of writing, where nothing is filler. Everything, every piece of dialog and interaction adds up to more than the sum of the parts (to me).
Blame HBO for not giving enough budget to flesh out the episodes. The director definitely knows pacing problems but there are issues with financing. I hope next season will be different after smash success of session one.
@@setiop6788 exactly !!! They did good with what they were given imagine if they made each episode lower budget to stretch out the story like nahh they did damn good telling the whole story keeping everything high ass quality but yea concise maybe too much for some ppl 🤷♀️
@@setiop6788 well they should of cut the budget for the Kansas city scene in half and used that here and on the last episode. That scene did not add much to the show. Just a bunch of plot wholes.
This episode really hit home how traumatic these events were for Ellie. I love the game, but this was so much more visceral. Bella's performance was jaw dropping. Every episode they cement why they were the right person for this role, and I cannot wait to see what they do with season 2.
I haven't played the games so I had no preconception of this episode, but the red flag for me about the new community was that all the men were dressed normal, but the women had very conservative old fashioned clothes on. That screamed fundamentalist cult to me.
I love all podcasts and reviews but nerd soup is the best! Nobody has addressed that Ellie didn’t take her portion of the deer…she just took the meds and bounced…keep up the great work! Cannot wait for Succession to come back!
Penicillin should be injected into the muscle. And considering Ellie has no experience in finding veins, and that complications of injecting in the vein are common, she made the right choice. Now injecting directly into the wound is not usually the choice, but there are academic papers suggesting that it might be more effective. What worried me the most is that she didn't seem to have gotten enough penicillin for the 10 days Joel should be taking it.
This was definitely an intense episode, and yeah, my favorite as well. I think after the show is done, I might try playing the game. It's a good story.
What’s great is that there is just enough differences in the story, script, and tone that it won’t feel exactly the same. And of course the game is just fun and will naturally offer more lore. I hope you enjoy it if you do try it!
My mom is a nurse so I asked her while we were watching it, she said a vein in the arm however if someone's vein is too hard to find and single out, then an area with a lot of muscle tissue so your glutes, biceps or even your thigh. My mom said that in the wound is not the worst you can do, but it's better to do an area more connected to your circulatory system.
Great review! You guys were the only review that I listened to that pointed out that Daivd had a bigger portion of human stew than everyone else. I noticed that and I'm glad you talked about it. Strong Island representing!!
I'm thinking some of Ellie's reaction to Joel at the end had to do with she assumed he was either killed by the scouts or left for dead in the basement and she was on her own after such a horrific ordeal. The recognition and relief on Ellie's face when she focused onto Joel allowed her to come back to humanity because not only was Joel still alive, but he went to come get her.
Loved Episode 3 which was an emotional tour de force but this was my favourite of the season.. amazing acting and a fascinating look to the breakdown of society over the last 20 years.. anyone else hungry?
Great episode! Loved it! Cried (again). My critique is this: the important music cues are missing from the show in certain episodes/moments. This episode was missing two that I think could have amplified the emotions to the viewer. 1. Joel’s interrogation scene. They could have played his “I’m a bad MF” theme during that. (Those who played the game know what I mean). 2. When Ellie kills David, there’s a score in the game at that moment that sounds like it’s breaking apart or wavering. Then it cuts out the dialogue (after Joel calls her baby girl) and just plays the music so it seems like Ellie isn’t hearing Joel anymore (shell shock in a way). It makes you feel so much more sadness about what’s happened to her. This was the ultimate loss of innocence for her (or whatever was left). Anyway, the show did great! But I thought the lack of score at certain moments just left something more to be desired.
@@cv8499 so it’s below average??🤔I think you might be right about that. Yeah a good show maybe could make you emotional. Idky a grown man would constantly cry over a tv show though 😂😂🤷♂️ but yeah a good tv show mr robot or something could definitely make you emotional.
I didn’t think this needed to be said, but grown men can/should cry. It’s okay. I’m quite in tune with my emotions. Thanks. And TLOU is a very important/emotional story for me. YOU don’t have to love the show or think they’re doing a good job. That’s your opinion, and that’s okay too. Go watch a show you enjoy, and we’ll be over here enjoying TLOU. 👋🏻
I wish we could have had more David. I wanted more of him and Ellie so that his obsession with her made more sense. I think having maybe some zombies attack them and having her kill some of them to justify his “violent heart” comment and make it feel more justified.
Sounds like he was one of the people whose born a serial killer or physical abuser and found solace in the post apocalypse. Like his moral depravity was because he serial killer or abusive tendencies before
@@Peecamarke Definitely agree. He would probably take out his anger on the girls in his classroom he was interested in with weird punishments and then try to “help” them be better.
It seems like the majority of people who have played the game prior to the show will still hold the game as the better overall experience of this story, but the show is still doing a fantastic job of presenting the story to a new audience (while also being good enough for existing fans to enjoy). Even though it's my favourite story ever, this show won't end up being one of my favourite shows - I'm just extremely happy that so many more people will get to see it when they otherwise never would have (older people/people who don't play games).
I’m an ‘older person’ who has been playing video games since the early 1980’s, I’m not sure there’s that many people watching the show who weren’t aware of the game to be honest.
A disservice is being done to the show and game by people debating which one is better. They both are holding their weight with great writing and performances.
As a fan of the show, I think the full appreciation of how good the adaptation is will come once the season is done. Watching it episode to episode, I find myself getting hung up on the things that I wanted to see and were left out. I think having the full season available to watch back to back will make me appreciate the choices that were made in leaving stuff out a lot more. It’s a really great show and even with slight disappointments about things I didn’t get to see, they’ve managed to hit every emotional beat that the game hit and are successfully telling the same overall story. I don’t think liking the game more devalues how fantastic this show is.
Interesting that Ellie finds an ear, with Joel deafening and not being on guard because of that, Sam being deaf, and so many not paying attention to their inner hearing (David).
Penicillin is typically injected as a slow-release deposit deep into a muscle. Other forms can be for intravenous injection, but must be infused slowly.
The way Ellie administered it would definitely work faster. My question is is how did she know how much to administer and how often. Also, I think that shit expires.
Great episode. The restaurant scene her acting was outstanding, was absolutely brilliant. They must have done the scene when she runs outside later or on a different day, her acting was still great but i dont think it matched how amazing she was inside the bar/restaurant
They showed how far she'd come by her risking her life to save joel by riding away on the horse and by killing the guy with the cleaver after everything. Honestly with how the show portrayed the bloater in the 5th episode, where it wasn't able to be taken down even with an assault rifle, it'd be WAAAY too farfetched to think ellie could beat one with a rifle
@@thatlonelygiraffeinc.6989 There weaker against fire. Molotovs work and melt the fungus on them that behaves like Armor. Don't get me wrong the show is amazing but that's just a pet peeve.
@@Astartes-6969 I would've loved to have seen another bloater, the one from ep5 was badass. But if Ellie killed a bloater in the first half of the episode, it would honestly make david a way less threatening antagonist. Cos David is scary because of his emotional instability and manipulation for everyone, but in Ellies case he's also dangerous because he's physically imposing in relation to her, but if she managed to kill a bloater before she fights him, it loses that physical disadvantage she's at in order to build tension
I imagine they wanted to keep production costs down for the first season, until they were sure they were getting a second. In the second game, Joel does kill a bloater to save Ellie, and she eventually faces off against one on her own, so it may happen in season 2
Okay so David was totally grooming those kids though right? I've seen conflicting takes on it, but that's the vibe I got. And I thought during that final confrontation when he was talking about how he likes the fighting part, did he not reach down like to undo his pants? I just wanna know what other people thought.
Wait, is that part in question by some people? Yeah, he was grooming the children, a big part of why him being a teacher pre apocalypse is so unsettling, and the… I don’t even want to call it an “implication”, yeah he was undoing his pants while saying “the fighting is my favorite part” and talking about beauty in love or whatever. Basically every trauma a child(or adult for that matter) can go through all at once with everything David put her through
@@Eveliane Okay I thought it was pretty obvious but then I saw some people commenting that it wasn't that on a different video so I just wanted to make sure I wasn't projecting or something.
I feel like this guy would have been killed after hitting people randomly. He doesn't even hunt for them and they talk about him when he's not around. His days are numbered.
I'm glad there isn't a ton of zombie fighting. It's annoying and unrealistic that they could beat hordes of clickers every episode. It's not a computer game, so it doesn't need keep the player occupied. 🤷🏼♀️
I agree every time the infected have been shown they've been shown to be nigh unstoppable forces of nature that require pretty much high level explosives to deal with in hordes, and it's lead to every encounter with them to be tense and exciting. Unlike the walking dead where they headshot the zombies by the dozen
Yep. And hordes of infected running around in the area has incongruous implications for David’s community. They don’t appear to have any defenses built up against infected the way Jackson does and very few among them seem to be skilled with guns. How would their community have survived in the area so long if the place was overrun with clickers?
It’s always interesting seeing someone confront true alien morality and depravity, like people who genuinely don’t give two craps about what’s right and what’s wrong and totally comfortable with it. And Yo… Ellie dawg…😶 they brought the beast out of her, she’s gonna survive this world albeit with TREMENDOUS amount of trauma but a survivor 🤷🏿
I haven't read one comment yet, and am under 1 minute of watching this video, but at .57, all I can say is AMEN, brother. I am soooooo tired of the gay bashing. Like, for real.
If you watch the episode again, look at David's people. While they may not know they are eating human meat, they do know who David really is. They won't meet his eye. They are clearly beaten down by this guy and completely fearful of what he can do.
@@maia_gaia oh no I’ve seen some incredible shows and acting performances. Shoes like mr robot, the wire, breaking bad, sopranos, the boys etc… like actual good shows🤷♂️this is just not one of them.Go check out some of those lass if you really want To watch some good tv.
I don't think it was so much people hating the "gay relationship" as there are many gay or trans references in the game. I feel like episode 3 had no relevance to continue the story apart from Bill leaving Joel all his supplies. It's a great episode and the story between Bill and Frank is well portrayed. But compared to the rest of the series it was boring to watch and uneventful.
My wife, a nurse, says the penicillin shot isn't ideal to be done at the wound in the skin like that but it can still help. Bigger danger apparently is overdosing the medicine.
I just hope that all those Bella haters were choking on their shoes today after swearing she couldn't be Ellie because she didn't *look* like Ellie (read: not pretty enough). But I think Bella Ramsey proved herself throughout the show, but particularly this episode. She was perfection.
Idk, this was an okay episode. I'm not even hating, I really want to enjoy this show but it definitely has a pacing problem. The "baby girl" scene just didn't hit as it did in game. How were Ellie and David not passing out from the smoke in the burning cabin?? Where was the rest of the community during that scene? I'm still excited for the finale but this episode was okay at best.
If you've played the game you know where everybody else were during the fire - fighting Joel. I do agree that the game is still superior, but the show is good for people who don't play videogames
The floor is actually the best place for breathable air when you are in a burning building. Smoke and heat rise - the floor is the coolest, least smokey place.
I don't hate episode 3, but my issue is the amount of time they took away from Joel and Ellie, and focused on side characters who didn't help character development for the main characters. I don't care that it was a story about two men's relationship, but if the story was about a man and a woman, I would still have the same opinion on the episode that two supporting characters, are not supporting main character development.
this part was one of my favorite episodes of this show but it broke me at the end of Ellie went through and Joel was there to comfort her but not there for when she has to kill David.
Joel being a badass savage and not holding anything back and straight up killed a lot of men I see game Joel in the show which was the best part of this whole episode.
The problem with adaptation of any source material is folks cannot let go of their preconceived notions of how the story should be portrayed or move forward. This is an amazing show, regardless of the source material.
This. This kills me. This is why we can't have nice things. I'm kinda glad I didn't play the game and get attached to it, and now I might choose to never play it. Good adaptations, bad adaptations, great adaptations, people always find a way to ruin the fun. You know that saying, "Kill Your Heroes"? If you put people on a pedestal, you're destined to disappointment or to defend monsters. Maybe we should add "Burn your Masterpieces." Maybe Kafka was right. A total nobody, he asked his friend to burn his unpublished, at the time completely unknown work, as he was dying. Instead his friend published it.
Each episode has its subtleties and impact. The writers and show runners have done a brilliant job, moving the story along. While at times it felt as if things were dragging on, and/or rushing, ultimately, the timing has been perfect. This episode is proof. As far as showcasing Bella’s range; I’m sorry, but this was the crucible. The sky is the limit with her. I had no idea what to expect, and each time she shows up and delivers. The nuances of her emotions are unending. I’m not sure I have seen a person her age do what she did in this episode and all through the season, since Maisie in Game of Thrones. All of Maisie’s performances were masterpieces. Bella certainly, and ironically is every bit as remarkable. When she was on the chopping block, I completely forgot that I was watching an episode of television, and I felt utter dread. I had real fear that they would actually kill her. Not to mention so many expressions on her face: fear, rage, stealth, and more during the moments she was hiding. Every step of the way she was completely authentic. All of the performances by the entire cast are amazing and believable. There are simply no words for Pedro. He is a unicorn. I was so heartbroken when Anna was killed off, but this has been so amazing and outstanding. And while I agree, episode three was magnificent and beautiful; they each get better and better. To me, this has been the pinnacle. I’m actually having anxiety about the finale. I welcome any thoughts on my comments. Did I miss some thing? This is just crazy! I never imagined being more excited about a series than G.O.T. or H.O.D. By the way, I think your podcast is the best ever. You guys are great, informative, supremely articulate, and professional… all the while managing to be fun.
I actually don't think that Ellie is super violent "in her heart". Pastor freak just told her that to groom her, while projecting his own shit onto her. She actually just seems like a (sometimes sassy) teenager who up until this point was pretty much non violent. In the beginning when we see her being bullied we learn that her friend had to have her back. Finally she had to step up for herself but she really needed to be pushed to give that bully a black eye. It did not come out of her like "Hell yeah, give me a reason to punch you, b***! It was more pent up frustration and anxiety from probably endless incidences like that but pretty "normal" I guess considering she is alone and with her back to the wall. If she was truly violent she would have done so much more to that bully. Later, she THINKS she would like to have a gun and poses with it but when she actually has to use it for the first time she is anxious and reluctant to do it, but knows they will die if she doesn't. The amount of violence she resorts to when she kills pastor freak is just pure terror of almost having been butchered (later eaten) and raped. I mean, rape is freaking scary, especially as a teenager who has never been touched, like...really really TERRIFYING. Gladly I never had to experience anything even remotely close to that but man, just watching this as a grown up get's into my bones. I think she was in trauma survival mode. That was not a deliberate "I enjoy hacking him to pieces with my violent heart" thing. Just wanted to point that out because it kind of felt unfair to me to adopt the label that the freak pastor projected on her with his own agenda in mind while he tried to fuck her up to the core.
@@raymondsims7042 Dude you've been saying this for days on end on so many goddamn reviews. People can genuinely have an opinion that is different than yours without being dishonest about it. Agreed completely - 2nd best episode of the season. This one was so well done, but Episode 3 remains one of the best hours of television ever produced.
Episode 3 is one of the worst episodes of tv EVER!! No doubt about that. This episode was just alright I guess. It’s one of the best of this show though. Because pretty much all the episodes are either average or below average
@@raymondsims7042 What didn't you like about Episode 3? I thought it was a clever way of developing the game's side characters to further flesh out the world and deliver a beautiful yet devastating love story at the same time.
@@ryanmiller6605 1. They aren’t even “side characters” they were more so guest appearances. That for some reason this weak show wanted to give a whole episode to🤦♂️2. It was a waste of time, because it really didn’t flesh out the world or add anything to the story. 3 it had some of the most cringey dialogue I’ve ever heard “there is no girl” “I know”😂😂terrible. 4. It was way to happy and safe for the “apocalypse” we just sat there watching two men have sex, plant strawberries, and grow old together in the “apocalypse”. 5. So yeah it was pointless, had horrendous writing, and was an all around waste of my bloody time. Definitely one of the worst episodes of any show ever
I'm with you Ryan. Clearly not everyone agrees, but so what. It seems that the divide is largely based on knowledge of the game story (and yes, unable to cope with seeing gay humans being portrayed as, you know, human). I think those who don't know the game watch or experience the show differently than those who know the game.
You're both were right. Abx usually go in the veins. Some things can be done topically or locally, but probably not what's wrong with Joel. At that point, I gotta imagine he was septic from a gut infection. That said, abx were scarce, & even many docs aren't your best shot to hit a vein first try for an injection (from what I've seen, the order is usually phelbotomist > most nurses >> most docs... just bein honest), so I can't fault a young girl that's never given an injection for shoddy technique. Where Joel's wounded, not sure how much penicillin would've realistically helped anyway. Probably needed some vanc, metro, ceftri or somethin, idk. Unless the real issue was dealing with some syphilis he didn't wanna mention, I guess. Then penicillin might've been just what Joel needed. 😂
I really wish we could have separated this episode into more of a two parter. The first half was really good, but the second half could have had a slower, more tension fueled pace to really build up to Ellie's explosive moment. Right now, episode 5 is still my favorite because it had just a little bit of everything.
I agree! A little more time spent letting David’s obsession grow naturally would have made Ellie finally getting the upper hand on him even more satisfying. I remember this section of the game being so grueling and difficult, I do wish a little bit that that was reflected in the pacing. And what’s the difference between a 9 episode season and 10 episode season anyways?
The fact that we are constantly giving the show so much credit for merely being "the best" video game adaptation, we are constantly allowing so many passes to the showrunners for utterly watering down the intricacy of the original story. The game did a fantastic job showcasing that, although the infected were definitely a prevalent danger, it was human's that posed the greater threat due to their potential for betrayal. This is the very essence of Joel's unwillingness to open up or drop his guard with anyone. The Henry and Sam arc perfected this reality. This episodes arc in game was to allow Ellie, who up to this point still maintained hope that not everyone was evil, to see the extent humanity is willing to fall into evil acts for the sake of "survival."
@@fayesouthall6604 I never said the show wasn't enjoyable for what it is. At face value the show is doing alright. It's entertaining as far as modern television beats go, which was to be expected given the transition from game to television with today's audience. But you can't shut down fans of the original story who voice their opinions merely because you're enjoying the current medium. If anything, all the criticism should persuade many viewers, who either don't play games or simply didn't experience this one, to consider picking it up, or at the very least watching the game scenes on RUclips to truly understand where they're coming from. Unlike a book turned movie which does require varied interpretations and translations, a modern video game is essentially a movie experience with gaming mechanics. Books don't have visual or audio representations. Games do. Books rely on the reader's imagination. Game's ARE the imagination come to life. Hence why it's so gut wrenching when an already established medium is butchered simply to satisfy a modern general populace instead of keeping to the core spirit of the original story. In other words, Neil Druckman bitched out on formatting one of the most violently written stories in favor of playing it safe.
It’s *actually* *GENUINELY* amazing episodes like this that get me the most frustrated to see so many people in past (not so great, just decent/slightly above average) episodes that just throw out 10/10’s ratings for those previous episodes in such a casual, nonchalant manner just like they are throwing out fist fulls of bread crumbs to a flock of seagulls. My point being, of course, that when a legitimate (near) perfect episode like this actually *DOES* indeed come along inevitably, and perhaps even though it may not be 100% percent perfect, still may justifiably deserve that 💫’Golden 10 ⭐️ Rating’ 💫 (albeit every once in a blue moon, rightfully so, too, I might add…even though I must reiterate that I believe it is EXTREMELY rare for a television episode/show/or even perhaps a movie to ever *really* technically and truly/authentically even possibly be deserving of being considered “completely perfect”) So then what the hell kind of rating do you expect to give an incredible episode like this now?! A 14/10??? I mean, I’m just saying thoughhh…it is a *bit* ridiculous at times when I see this time and time again, hahaha…yall know what I’m saynnnn?? Right?? 🤨 🤔 🧐 🤦♂️ 😅
two things 1) you shouldn't care that much about ratings nowadays because it's either just a bunch of blind fanboys who will give out 10/10s to distort the show into seeming better than it is, or it's review bombed by idiots. 2) usually the amazing episodes have less hateful ratings and more people with high votes who are unbiased, so the rating goes up, falling (more or less) somewhere in a fair place.
@@explosivx43 oh I know it’s no big deal, however it still can just be incredibly irritating at times but yea thanks for the friendly reminder anyways haha…and yes you are absolute right, for actually undeniably overall great episodes (for the most part) usually do in fact get the scores they actually deserve most of the time. Political biases often play a huge part in some particular cases all the time, as well, so yea there’s that too…which is an absolute shame (and a sham) lol
Monkey and Bugman, she didn't unleash her violent heart on him because she just let go, she unleashed and kept stabbing him because she has been traumatized before. Look at the difference between her expression after she leapt from the chopping block. She was mostly ok, light on her feet and quick witted. After he pins her, the terror in her face, the abject horror... you should recognize that trauma. She is in shock afterwards. When Joel grabs her, in her old self she would have gone for his jugular. But she didn't. She was flailing and shaking. It's not the same at all. She HEARD him. When he said "I thought you understood. I like struggle..." Think about it: he was a teacher, then he became a preacher. Both positions are perfect for a predator. The knows. She figured it out. The guy was at the least a serial R probably a serial K, and possibly a Hannibal Lechter the whole time... She understood what was going to happen. Think about that happening to you.
I don’t think anyone is complaining about the gay aspect of episode 3. If they are then fuck them. I think it’s more the relevance of that episode in the bigger story that made it “bad” I love the episode as a stand alone but as a whole, before I watched the episodes after, it felt irrelevant to the story because it didn’t progress the story as a whole. I actually haven’t genuinely liked the show pass episode 2. I love 5 thou.
Everytime I've had penicillin injected it's been the upper buttcheek. Similar to how people take steroids. Just straight into the tissue. I don't think they look for veins at all.
I have to say episode three was my favorite episode and I am whatever neutral on gay relationship so that didn’t come into account but then the one with sam and Henry and then this one well for me anyway thanks for your commentary. Love it all the time.
@@Dextelite_RUclips don’t speak for me. If it was a “straight couple” but had cringey dialogue, bad writing, and no purpose at all to the plot I’d say “it was one of the worst episodes I’ve ever seen”
In case you were wondering you want to inject antibiotics into a muscle. Typically in the buttocks but any large muscle will work. So what Bella did can work but isn't optimal.
The first half was great, they rushed the hell out of the last half of the show. These last 2-3 episodes would have benefitted from being an extra 20 mins or mad the season 14 episodes. A lot of the emotional weight gets left on the way side to get to the ending.
So a little girl hunted and shot a deer within 5 minutes of being in the woods but a whole community was on the brink of starvation and had no choice but to eat the dead. Something isn’t adding up…..How does that make sense ? Plus they were most likely chopping up members of there own community and feeding them without consent.
@@fernandogutierrez7786 Deer had only just been spotted in the area, that's stated in the episode. Joel taught Ellie to hunt, the community didn't have those skills, that was inferred when they found the deer she killed. When Joel finds the meat store there's 3 bodies hanging up, only one is explained (the guy Joel killed) inferring they'd been cannibals for sometime. Probably since the weather got too bad for them to forage for food.
To say the only reason people don’t like episode 3 is because of the gay relationship is dismissive and not accurate. It’s the changes to the main story that doesn’t do anything to improve the narrative or move it forward a lot of people hate. Seems like the story was changed for no other reason then to do a gay episode and that’s it.
I'd say there's a lot in this show that's above average but those are usually the parts that are ripped straight from the game. The overall writing and especially the editing is indeed very mediocre. Like the end of this episode for example. Instead of Joel showing up while Ellie is butchering David and immediately grabbing and embracing her to calm her down, they have her finish the kill, take a breather, stroll out of the building and get grabbed by Joel awkwardly coming at her from the side. All the tension of the scene is already gone by then. So much more impactful in the game.

Episode 3
Ease up on the hate Nerd Soup.
Ellie notices the ear and David kinda looks like Van Gogh lol
He totally looks like Van Gogh! 😆
Holy shit your right!
You don't know how good I am!
Everyone believes they're a good person. That is how people do the casual evil that so many people do. If they truly recognize that X is bad, there is always a justification. And the sociopaths, psychopaths, and narcissists don't care.
David is a classic psychopath
I only was a bit disappointed that they didn’t include Ellie and the cult leader killing all those clickers and the bloater.
budget
Budget, time of episode. Cult leader was such a piece of crap. He was prepared to rape Ellie.
Agreed, that would built that mutual respect/trust in David before it all went to shit
Did this episode have any infected? Kinda weird but I suppose it's purposeful
@@KerioFive None. But it still works. I do wish they had more relevance in the shows story, but the threat is never understated at lease
Good point 👍
I thought watching this... she’d make a great Ayra.
The fact that not everyone in the community knew they were eating people was just messed up on a whole different level

I think another 2-3 episodes would've helped significantly especially if you're gonna include the Bill & Frank arc and Kathleen storyline
That being said it's still one of the best video game adaptions we've ever had
There’s going to be a second season I’m sure.
David is reading from the Book of Revelations in the opening scene. You can't get much more apocalyptic than that.
I love all podcasts and reviews but nerd soup is the best! Nobody has addressed that Ellie didn’t take her portion of the deer…she just took the meds and bounced…keep up the great work! Cannot wait for Succession to come back!
0:58 “go …. yourself.” Helluva start to the video 🤣🤣🤣
Agreed! 😂
Hope you give it a go. It's definitely a tier above the show.
Why did no one come check out the fire at the end ? Why didn’t Scott try to put the fire out ? That was pretty much their nicest building.
In the game they're fighting Joel while Ellie is killing the pedo
It’s the community eating house.
Great review! You guys were the only review that I listened to that pointed out that Daivd had a bigger portion of human stew than everyone else. I noticed that and I'm glad you talked about it. Strong Island representing!!
My husband pointed it out to me. I could tell “something” was different about his food but I couldn’t pinpoint why.

She did put it in slowly
The way Ellie administered it would definitely work faster. My question is is how did she know how much to administer and how often. Also, I think that shit expires.
Great episode. The restaurant scene her acting was outstanding, was absolutely brilliant. They must have done the scene when she runs outside later or on a different day, her acting was still great but i dont think it matched how amazing she was inside the bar/restaurant
Wish Ellie killing the Bloater was added.
In the game it showed how far she came learning from Joel to be a Fighter & Survivor.

Yep. And hordes of infected running around in the area has incongruous implications for David’s community.
The whole show has been only “ok at best” like at the very best😂😂

Good thing there are no more infected in this show. Boy were they scary...
Her screams still haunt me.
Maybe we should add "Burn your Masterpieces."
Maybe Kafka was right.

I love y’alls positivity and how the comments are always positive as well.
I hate it 🤷♂️I wish they were more honest in their reviews
@@raymondsims7042 Dude you've been saying this for days on end on so many goddamn reviews. People can genuinely have an opinion that is different than yours without being dishonest about it. Is your "missus" a liar because she loves the show? Just shut it already with this idea that people are paid off or dishonest because they express their appreciation for a show that you hate. It's pathetic.
@@SteveBonario read my reasoning for why that episode was terrible
If I was in an apocalypse I wouldn’t want a big group. Just me and 20 other self sufficient bangers. Call us the 21 guns.
Would HBO recast Ellie for season 2? I guess it was a bigger age jump from the games. Maybe they’ll move stuff around story wise?
Grabbing a nearby knife had never been done before. Bravo !!!
Hold on, I would be obsessed with you guys reviewing episodes of my hero. What are my chances boys, I'm SO into that 😭😭😭
I really wish we could have separated this episode into more of a two parter.
Comply agree with you lad. People need to stop giving this show a pass. It has to many flaws to even count
Seriously not everyone played the game. I’m enjoying the story.
In what way does the game deliver something that a modern general populace wouldnt get? What is the core spirit that got butchered here?

It’s *actually* *GENUINELY* amazing episodes like this that get me the most frustrated to see so many people in past (not so great, just decent/slightly above average) episodes that just throw out 10/10’s ratings for those previous episodes in such a casual, nonchalant manner just like they are throwing out fist fulls of bread crumbs to a flock of seagulls.
My point being, of course, that when a legitimate (near) perfect episode like this actually *DOES* indeed come along inevitably, and perhaps even though it may not be 100% percent perfect, still may justifiably deserve that 💫’Golden 10 ⭐️ Rating’ 💫 (albeit every once in a blue moon, rightfully so, too, I might add…even though I must reiterate that I believe it is EXTREMELY rare for a television episode/show/or even perhaps a movie to ever *really* technically and truly/authentically even possibly be deserving of being considered “completely perfect”)
So then what the hell kind of rating do you expect to give an incredible episode like this now?! A 14/10??? I mean, I’m just saying thoughhh…it is a *bit* ridiculous at times when I see this time and time again, hahaha…yall know what I’m saynnnn?? Right?? 🤨 🤔 🧐 🤦♂️ 😅
two things
1) you shouldn't care that much about ratings nowadays because it's either just a bunch of blind fanboys who will give out 10/10s to distort the show into seeming better than it is, or it's review bombed by idiots.
People were complaining about episode 3s storyline?!? For F's sake!! God bless HBO for giving us only the best shows we could ever ask for.
07:00 my favourite moment of the episode😆
Ellie was guessing
I have to say episode three was my favorite episode and I am whatever neutral on gay relationship so that didn’t come into account but then the one with sam and Henry and then this one well for me anyway thanks for your commentary. Love it all the time.

Since I saw Bella Ramsey in GOT I just new she was going to do a great actress, she's amazing. ❤

Well that was good timing
Where were all the other people? Wouldn't someone notice the fire at least?
The first half was great, they rushed the hell out of the last half of the show. These last 2-3 episodes would have benefitted from being an extra 20 mins or mad the season 14 episodes. A lot of the emotional weight gets left on the way side to get to the ending.
This was a great episode had me on the edge of my seat the whole time! Then the “Baby gurl” from the internets sexy “daddy” ❤
Omg my daddy issues were out in full effect. Call me baby girl anytime Pedro lmao
Great episode! David was so terrifying and creepy as fuck. Ellie was the MVP clearly! And then "I got you baby girl". I was about to ball- 9.7/10
Come on lad this was a 6.5/10 at best
Call me crazy but eating dead people rather than everbody starving seems relatively fine.
So a little girl hunted and shot a deer within 5 minutes of being in the woods but a whole community was on the brink of starvation and had no choice but to eat the dead. Something isn’t adding up…..How does that make sense ? Plus they were most likely chopping up members of there own community and feeding them without consent.
I agree with ya points like obviously have the conversation with the group and ya know exhaust all the other options.
@@SuperCreyson agree with u there, there are certain situation where eating people may be justified but these people were far from it
Ellie found a deer quick. Why couldn’t he and his men. He’s a creepy nasty.
I hope he gets a hearing aid next episode then turns super saiyan
David told Ellie he was a math teacher and his students were about her age. I really do not like that idea.

Is this the last episode?
I'm honestly baffled so many people are calling mediocre work 'the best of'...I'll never understand why.
Isn’t it crazy?? I’m glad some of us are being honest about this show 🤝it’s average at the very best
Best episode ever 🎉. Award her for acting with just these last 2 episodes.
