    Heres my opinion on the "its just a dream trope": As long as the character actually DEVELOUPS then it is perfectly fine. The issue with this trope is that most writers use it to play out an impossible scenario that can actually cause develoupment for a character that people desire, but then can cop out if they get too scared. But lelas actions have direct connections because of this dream, someting rarely seen. Good job duck tales!

      Basically this; any Trope, no matter how tired can be done well, but you have to write it effectively - All Just A Dream mostly falls apart because it's usually a copout that robs a story of any consequences, lasting change, or even the most minute level of character progression. This episode however uses the trope to give Lena the final push into turning on her aunt, the nudge she NEEDS to actively choose redemption; the fact that despite her initial intentions, Lena ultimately chose to NOT continue working for Magica will NOT be lost on the cast - it didn't stop her aunt's plans due to how late it happened (the Eclipse empowering her enough to take control, before Lena could warn Scrooge), and there will definitely be some hurt especially on Webby's part, but that Lena in the end decided to turn on her evil aunt WILL mean something at the end of the day.
      I've seen several other uses of the All Just a Dream trope, and my favourite has to an episode in the Dc animated series "Young Justice"; I won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't watched the show (it is SO good!), but damn if the episode which did this story device didn't REALLY make it impactful...! Granted, there will always, ALWAYS be some people who never like the trope's use for whatever reason (it's overdone, it "wasn't real", etc.), but if you can do it right and do it well? Then definitely don't hesitate to do it, because as these shows have demonstrated it genuinely IS as effective as anything when done correctly.

    • @wratched
      @wratched 6 лет назад +13

      The big difference for me is that the dream trope was set up. We learn in advance that the dream catcher projects nightmares. Plus, the dream also reveals Lena's true motivations, so it wasn't just about reestablishing the status quo.

    • @selalewow
      @selalewow 5 лет назад +5

      The main issue with "it was just a dream" trope is when they use it to reset everything back to the beginning of the episode. No change, just a possibility they will forget by the next episode. t is frustrating to viewers because they show a trailer that looks cool, but it leads to nothing.

    The dime is powerful because of what it means to Scrooge. It’s like the arm of Death in The Sandman comics, Marcelina’s stuffed animal or princess bubblegum’s shirt or Ingrid’s ribbons in OUAT or even Lena’s friendship bracelet with Webby. Objects do not have power, people give them power.

      "Once Upon A Time", the live-action series adapting those popular fairy tales (and in particular, Disney-adapted stories) with a twist; also created by two of the key staff (and probably other crew) that worked on the earlier hit show, "Lost" (JJ Abrams is not one of them, however).

      The Ponderer if you listen closely to certain scenes with Mark Beaks in the episode “Who is Gizmoduck?”, there’s this slow, ominous mechanical theme playing in the background and it sends chills up my spine every time I hear it. I don’t know if it plays in other episodes that star him but it’s really good.

    For just a moment, when it seemed Webby was destroyed, I was devastated to see that. I may have only known this Webby a short time, but I have grown attached to this one. I can not tell you how relieved I was to see that it was just an illusion.
    I can't wait to see what else happens with this story.

  • @sewthernbelle

    Ugh...this episode killed me. When they revealed it was just a vision, I was so freakin relieved. I think it was a friendly warning that the animators aren't afraid to put these characters in real mortal danger. That real stakes are acomin'. If I had to nitpick though...I would say that I wish they had mentioned what "Lena" was doing in the next episode. Because they just expect us to believe Magica is just waiting for Webby to get back from their adventures?

    • @borjankosarac3645
      @borjankosarac3645 6 лет назад +4

      Well, we DO need a slight break from the darkness of this storyline... and also to get back onto the Della Duck narrative which has been kind of lounging around since the pilot, waiting for some progression. Take note, the episode which introduced Don Karnage and his crew was - yet again - the executives screwing over the broadcast order; "Sky Pirates... In the Sky!" was actually meant to air right BEFORE "The Other Bin of Scrooge McDuck", not right on its heels.
      I mean, I guess I should be glad that they are keeping the last 3 (or 4, considering the double-length season finale) in order without any needless breaks from earlier, "filler" episodes - and the fact that technically, none of these stories are aired in a contradictory order - but I'm still a bit peeved by it. I still haven't forgiven Disney XD (who granted, no longer air the show) for pushing "Terror of the Terra-Firmians" as early as they did, wrecking the gradual momentum of the Lena/Magica storyline AND making Huey and Webby's science vs. faith debate a little less nuanced as a result... so far as I'm concerned, the production order of the episodes is canon, NOT the broadcast order. Short of the show itself making a clear timeline that regards the original broadcast order as official canon, I refuse to see it any other way.

      Indeed... was not expecting that, although in hindsight it makes a LOT of sense to play out that way... Presumably, while we've no guarantee of a perfectly-positive conclusion, the two-part/double-length season finale will be something of a catharsis after that (and among other things, hopefully lead in to Donald actually getting in on the adventures next season - since he was sitting them out for the most part, and for plot-related reasons too).

    in some folklore magic talismans are created when an item constantly on the person of an individual absorbs the excess power that person gives off. I think that may be the case with Scrooge's #1 dime. It didn't start out magic or lucky, rather being with Scrooge all this time made it that way.

    Amazing review!!! Such an incredible show. This show has consistently blown me away again and again. The most recent episode (The Last Crash of the Sunchaser) literally brought me to tears in a similar fashion to the ending of Chapter 11 of The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck. Seeing that clip of Magica in the original "Ducktales" really makes me miss June Foray.
    Anyways, this has got to be one of my favorite episodes in the reboot, and that ending was just terrifying.
    Speaking of Disney Bigfoots (Bigfeet?), in "An Extremely Goofy Movie," some fans speculated that one of the guys from Max's rival's group might be the Bigfoot from "A Goofy Movie," only if he shaved. It makes me wonder if that inspired the subplot of this episode.

    You know, with Lena I'm wondering more and more about her past. From the newest episodes with her in I am starting to wonder if Lena...is even a real duck. I mean she used the amulet to release her Aunt in the first episode and recently we learned Lena wants freedom from Magica but could it be a different freedom? I'm probably thinking too much into this but from what they've shown us in the series so far I'm keeping it in the back of my head. A great episode all the same, especially the triplet's side story, and the reference to Webby's old Quack Patch doll.

  • @fortcastellan1730

    The thing is: they had a reason for using the 'its all just a dream' trope. They had already referenced the.....was it the 'nightmare catcher'?....earlier in the episode, and having Lena recognize it from Webby's story was a minor plot point/character moment. So, I'm okay with it.
    Plus, I really enjoyed Louie's in-character abuse of Bigfoot at the end...

    I think the "it was a dream" thing is a cop-out when used to "fix" or "undo" everything that was built up, and the explanation for how the dream came to be is only mentioned after the fact too, no foreshadowing, it's just lazy
    but the dreamcatcher was mentioned earlier in the episode, setting up the Lena's vision. It was foreshadowed! And her vision wasnt the entire episode, it was only a few seconds, which is why it works well here
    this isnt a criticism of your video or review. just my own thoughts and rambles that came to me as i watched

    • @CassidyShadewing
      @CassidyShadewing 6 лет назад +4

      Eyecanic I agree. The dime is powerful not because of any power it has but due to the importance and faith put into it first by Scrooge then by others. Its similar to why crosses have power against vampires, they a symbol of faith and powered by the faith of the one holding it.
      Scrooge has been holding and empowering that dime for decades with his faith in it. Thus it might be one of the most powerful artifacts on the planet.

    • @KingOfElectricNinjas
      @KingOfElectricNinjas 6 лет назад +4

      They specifically point out in an earlier episode with Lena that Magica de Spell's kind of magic runs on 'sympathetic magic'; use of objects that represent certain things, the rarer and more significant the better. Like, a newt's eye and a frog's toe aren't magical on their own, right? Likewise, there's nothing special about the Number One Dime on its own, it's just a coin. But it's significant as the first hard cash earned by the richest person on the planet, a representation of wealth and prosperity, and in the original comics, can be used to create an amulet that would bring its wearer incredible luck and wealth. (Notably in the original comics, Magica was originally just buying small change from Scrooge that he had touched, because even the mere touch of the world's richest duck gave them significance; but the Number One Dime is an order of magnitude more so)

    First, it’s clear Lena wants to be a real friend to Webby, and tries to do right by her and the McDuck clan, but the twist with Magica’s possession might be the one way Lena gets out and maintains her friendship with the main characters. Maybe even Mrs. Beakley might forgive her.
    Second, when I heard about the notion of another bin, one thought came to mind - one that reminded me of another tv show I used to watch: “Welcome to Warehouse 13.”

    Personally, I prefer that the Magica de Spell of the comics is a sorceress who can't do without batteries for her stun ray and without her small self-made Buff bombs. Some may say that there is no difference between witches and sorceresses and they are the totally same thing, but at least in Finland the two are separated in such a way that a witch is born with magical powers and don't have gadgets or aids, while a sorceress uses magical aids such as enchanted magic wands, stone tablets and objects or magical potions, brews and salves to get magical powers. In this case, the Touch of Mida is just one of her alchemical obsessions whose functionality cannot be guaranteed (however, in the one comic story by Don Rosa, though, they tested it with King Croesus' first coin and at least it didn't work and didn't turned Donald into a golden statue), and therefore Scrooge's Number One Dime doesn't have to be magical in any way to give her this power.

    Im sure you've read it at some point, but Keno Don Rosa once wrote a Donald Duck special for Donald's 60th anniversary. I think it was called "The Duck who never was". Donald ends up seeing what happens if he was never born, and it shows what would have happened with Scrooge.
    SPOILER WARNING
    Since Donald was never born, Scrooge hired someone else to be his cheap assistant, another distant relative: Gus Goose. Gus, having his trademark everlasting hunger, was tricked by magicka into spending Scrooge's lucky dime on hamburgers (which she sold during Gus' break time, for 10p a piece). So, naturally, Gus figured he'd take the dime for early pay. Boom. Magicka ended up crafting the talisman she always wanted, as Scrooge was too late to stop it. Crushed by the loss of his lucky dime, he lost his confidence and brokered poor business deals. Either by scam or poor decision making, Flintheart Glomgold managed to ruin Scrooge, and took all of Scrooge's business to South Africa, turning Duckburg into a ruined ghost city. Scrooge himself lives in trashcans afterwards, having nothing to his name.

    Thought you coulda talked more about the Other Bin and the crazy shit in it; Scrooge is basically running his own private SCP Foundation down there. Also it's mentioned that nearly all magic-related stuff Scrooge gets his hands on tends to be put down there, likely since Scrooge heavily distrusts magic and doesn't know much about what to do with it.
    Also, a quiet reference; the containment unit for the Number One Dime has a circular groove worn in the floor around it; it's Scrooge's Worry Room from the comics!

    Feels a bit like you could do to spend a little less time basically recapping the episode and more talking about it, or try to combine the two.

      I try to create content that can work even for those who haven’t seen the episode. That’s why I try to avoid spoilers, unless otherwise stated, and give an idea of what’s going on in each story before I talk about what interested me about it.

    No spoilers here; but in an upcoming episode, which I hope you’ll review, the dime has a secret history, that at least I didn’t know. It’s only a small little thing in it, because most of the episode is for character development for the triplets, but it made the dime have a much more deeper past. Really pulled my heart strings. I’m really excited to see what the rest of the season and even series holds. :)

    As Italian (a country where disey comics are very poular with a proper school) I have a question: if Magica is from Neaples why in original version of both Ducktales she speakes with a no-italian accent?
    Ok, I understand than in English is imposaible produce a Naeples accent, but....

    Nearly a week’s time we should find out for certain in regards to these about Magica in the Season 1 Finale:
    *Is she Della Duck?
    *Is Lena the daughter of her brother?
    Apparently from teasers her full Anthropomorphic Duck form still lacks the trademark Romanian Accent, that voice in shadow form is indeed her real voice. Catherine Tate should maybe explain a reason for dropping the Romanian Accent.

    • @borjankosarac3645
      @borjankosarac3645 6 лет назад +2

      Frank Angones and the crew did consider giving her an accent - which BTW, should be Italian based on the comics; June Foray's portrayal, while iconic, was as much a departure as making Glomgold into a Scotsman (he's Afrikaner in the comics)… Anyway, while they heavily considered the idea, they said they were worried that it would make her too exaggerated and draw too much comparison to Foray; they wanted whoever they cast (as I'm unsure how long Catherine Tate was in consideration) to give a performance that stood on its own.
      On another note, and this is my personal thoughts, I wonder if the reason they made Magica de Spell into an Evil Brit in this incarnation was to better drawn parallels and to further the connection between her and Scrooge. For the first point, remember how in Lena's first episode Webby tells her that she grew up in a mansion with her a Scottish billionaire and her British granny (thus not hearing an American accent for a good while), hence why she can do a flawless accent? So too can Lena do a flawless, posh Brit accent... like her aunt. In other words, Magica de Spell is the EVIL COUNTERPART to Bentina Beakley; a blood-related family member who for unexplained reasons has to be parent to this young girl - the different is that while Mrs. Beakley is stern and serious, she's also loving and kind, caring not just for her granddaughter but also her employer Scrooge, the trouble-making triplets, and even the oft-acerbic Donald; on the other hand, while Magica is charismatic and eccentric on the surface, beneath that she manipulative and deeply cruel, having no love for her niece or anyone but herself. The self-titled Sorceress of the Shadows is the most evil key antagonist in the series to date, as well as the most dangerous...
      For the latter point I made, this is mere speculation but... what if Magica and/or her family has HISTORY with the McDuck Clan? Not just Scrooge himself, but possibly going back multiple generations and even centuries? Making her English might have been an approach to giving their shared history and mutual enmity more depth, so as to explain how Magica became such a massive adversary to Scrooge; while not necessarily making her any more sympathetic, such an approach would possibly explain where her obsession with him came from beyond merely "he's the richest duck in the world, there must be some supernatural element to his success!" But until we know more, that's just theorizing on my part.

    • @CuriousUserX90
      @CuriousUserX90 6 лет назад

      Borjan Kosarac Frank Angones considered giving Magica an accent? Care to link me to where he talked about that? Like your thoughts though on how she might be connected to Mrs. Beakley, let’s make that 3 things to keep an eye out for.

    • @CuriousUserX90
      @CuriousUserX90 6 лет назад

      Borjan Kosarac Whenever they Cast Magica, they always find a woman whose had Connections to the voice of Scrooge. I mean even Alan Young and June Foray had Connections and Collaborated before the Original DuckTales.

    • @borjankosarac3645
      @borjankosarac3645 6 лет назад +1

      I don't mean that she's connected to Mrs. Beakley in the whole "they knew each other long ago" (though now that you mention it, that might be neat), rather I was drawing comparisons to them in terms of their roles in the lives of their young female relative and such... like, both Webby and Lena are parentless, and they have a parental figure who is related to them by blood AND was a huge impact on who they became, but while Mrs. Beakley is a good person despite being rather harsh on the surface, Magica is a terrible person despite being almost amiable if you were to just engage her in conversation on the street (so to speak). Them both having posh accents, I feel just adds to that symmetry of these two women - so similar in superficial ways, yet complete different in all ways that count.
      Hell, let's not forget about Beakley and Lena's heart-to-heart in the tunnel way back when; Lena's "no-care" mask slips when Beakley asks "Who raised you?". Then when the old housekeeper describes her granddaughter and the triplets as "good children, with bright futures", Lena bitterly asks "Then what does that make me?"; Mrs. Beakley admits she doesn't know... It's one of the most loaded exchanges in the series so far, and one of my favourite dramatic scenes, because there's so much under the surface on both sides; while Mrs. Beakley is wrong in her more general assumption that Lena's just a bad girl hooligan, she's ironically right to be suspicious of her granddaughter's new friend in a way she can't imagine; meanwhile Lena's walls are slowly being taken down with each appearance in the show, and we sympathise with her even knowing she's lying to all these good people.
      Anyway... I don't have a link, but I'm pretty sure it's on his Twitter or Tumblr (I don't frequent those besides when linked to such by sourcing and the like); if I find it, I'll attach it for you.
      As for the fact that Alan Young and June Foray were connected, I think I did see that somewhere but I can't remember. Of course, Foray was one of the most prolific voice actresses of the 20th Century with a career spanning what? Six or seven decades? So even if she and Young didn't know each other, it's understandable a hit show like the original "Ducktales" would seek out her talent (and IIRC, she actually voiced several other roles in the show; at the least, I'm fairly confident she did Ma Beagle). But it's still a neat fact to consider, and it does allow Scrooge and Magica to play off each other all the better; even now, I'm always amazed at what good friends David Tennant and Catherine Tate are (given they were both in their latter 30s when they first acted together on "Doctor Who"), but I guess some people just click easily and certain friendships do last (on a more somber note, Young and Foray died less than a year apart, didn't they?)
