  • This week we look at one of the best multi-class combos around, the paladin/sorcerer. We look at how I built mine for our campaigns, variations you could use for your own, as well as the many reasons why this particular combination of classes is so strong.

    This video was REALLY informative! The combination of these two classes seems incredibly fun to play! I can’t wait to try it out myself. Thanks for the first hand advice

      Thank you. I try to go by what I've played/seen played over just internet theorycraft whenever possible. Obviously I haven't played everything, but where I have I usually try to talk about my actual experiences playing the character.

    keep in mind that the smite spells, like Branding Smite, can stack with your regular divine smites. Branding Smite bonus action, divine smite upon hit. I like the video!

    TL:DR Enjoyed the video, good advice, 2 level paladin and all else in sorc is my favorite.
    Just wrapping up the watch and love the breakdown. Videos a bit old but all the tactics stand firm and I love how you still prioritized character over some miner min max choices. Also liked the mention of 2 level paladin build which is what I chose ,granted I picked before the video, and the ability to move around spell slots to prolong smite use is nice.
    I would say the strong choice of GreenFlameblade is always nice given you can smite and fast cast it leading to some epic damage when you need to nova. Though the biggest buff I saw is how you can quicken a spell and land a proper attack within the same turn and if you take certain spell, though all needing concentration, you can land two attacks with a empowered spell and with some shuffling around in spell slots you can get two max smites and a nasty spell off to wipe a single foe out as fast as humanly possible.
    More of a side note but also went with mounted combatant to pare with greater steed, extra support and advantage on most foes is great.

    Just made a character with this concept. Dex based human paladin starting with Medium Armor Mastery has SUPER high AC (lower Cha). I thought about taking subtle spell and get +2 cha instead of Warcaster, but after hearing how slick twinspell gets I've reconsidered.

    When you cast haste you can immediately make an attack. Making 3 the follow turn and another 3 the next turn.
    By 3rd turn Hasted already surpasses unhasted. BUT, the biggest advantage of haste is the AC and advantage to dex saves. Which also helps your mount and therefore minimizes the chances of you actually loosing your haste.

      Good point. Someone else messaged me, and I checked and saw you are correct. So it's even better than I thought, and I already thought it was pretty good. That said, nothing wrong with quicken casting it :)

      Haste should be the “glue” that holds this build together, and here’s how…
      So by the time you’re level 11, that being paladin 6/sorcerer 5, you will have access to haste, booming blade, extra attack and quicken spell.
      I recommend you pick for your class oath of devotion paladin because your channel divinity lets you turn your weapon magical. That’s your first turn action. Then quicken haste. This means that with plate armor, a shield, and haste, and the defense fighting style you will have a 23 to AC. Cast the shield spell as a reaction if you’re about to be hit and bring your AC up to a 28 until your next turn. On your next turn, quicken booming blade or green flame blade it really doesn’t matter, attack, extra attack, and then haste attack. Smite on all of these for an average damage of 100 or so with a strength of 20 and a long sword.

    I have a question about the sorcdin: if I use quicken spell on green flame blade can I use my action to perform an attack and then do an extra attack as pala6/sorc6? thank you

    • @thedungeon1578
      @thedungeon1578  3 года назад

      Yes. Quickening your GFB will let you cast it with your bonus action, then you can use your attack action (including extra attack from paladin) to perform 2 attacks.

    Ah the classic sorcadin. something i haven't played in a while since i dislike wearing full plate and the paladin's str req for multiclassing kind of forces you to dump dex.
    highly disagree with quicken spell not being as useful on casters. if you;re looking at cantrips to cause cantrip level dmg (like firebolt or eldritch blast), you're not using quicken spell optimally. quicken with extra attacks and smites though is the right idea. the key is either finding cantrips that combo well with your quickened spell or using non-spell actions which means you are being twice as impactful on your turn. i'll list a few examples of how i've used quickened spell in my optimized builds:
    1. quickened telekinesis + telekinesis action- 2 chances to restrain, lift and drop prone with falling dmg.
    2. quickened wall of force + minor illusion action- protect your concentration on a powerful control spell.
    3. path to the grave action + quickened upcasted inflict wounds + assassinate- massive burst dmg on turn 1.
    4. quickened upcasted call lightning (destructive wrath) + call lightning action (destructive wrath) + call lightning action surge (destructive wrath + lightning strike- massive small aoe burst dmg with a 30 ft pushback.
    5. quickened upcasted cloud of daggers + booming blade crusher action into the cloud of daggers- decision paralysis combo with good dmg.
    6. quickened bigby's hand + dragon fear/fey presence action- dragon fear/fey presence control for the mob and to make grapple controlling the bbeg via bigby's hand easier.
    7. quickened upcasted wall of fire + repelling grasp of hadar action- cheese fondue the enemy through the wall of fire for good sustained dmg.
    8. quickened dissonant whispers + beastmaster attack action (1 shillelagh attack and 1 to command the primal companion) + upcasted summon beast (pre-cast before combat)- opportunity attacks galore. reliably generates 7 attacks per round at level 10.
    9. quickened synaptic static + emboldening bond action + summon celestial (pre-cast before combat)- soften the mob, debuff the bbeg, boost the summon celestial's grapple + shove check for summon-style control.
    10. quickened booming blade sneak attack + ready off-turn booming blade sneak attack- easy way to generate 2 sneak attacks in 1 round.

    I think DSS is the best Sorcerer multiclass option for Paladins since you can get access to Spiritual Weapon and Spirit Guardians which make it feel like a Cleric + Paladin but has the Attribute synergy of sorcerer.

    Hey man this really helped because your suggestions were exactly what I was intending to play in a new campaign we are starting soon. We are starting at 4th level and I am going to 6 Conquest Paladin and then the rest for Divine Soul Sorcerer. My real quandary is choosing if I want to do Conquest 7 Divine Soul 13 for the frightened synergy (but lose spell slots at level 20) or Conquest 6 Divine Soul 14 for the Otherworldly wings (but have to wait for wings and lose frightened synergy). I know flight and higher level spell slots can do a lot especially at level cap but I would effectively be waiting until level 20 for the wings, while I would be able to use the frightened synergy for a lot of my character's progression. If you were to choose between the two options what do you think is better?

    • @thedungeon1578
      @thedungeon1578  4 года назад +1

      Hey, thanks for the comment, this is a great question, and one I wondered about a lot myself. In the end, it really comes down to whether you want the wings and the 9th level slot or not, and that really depends on if you think you'll get to and play at lv 20. I think the 7th level aura has a lot of potential as a CC mechanism; the fact you can fear stuff and not have it run while also being able to damage it is very strong. I went for 6/14 myself, but that was mostly for the 9th lv spell slot. In your case, it sounds like you might get more use and enjoyment over the 7th level aura.
      Honestly, I even think 8/12 would be pretty good, if you needed another feat. But if not, you may as well get the 7th level sorcerer spell, since that's a pretty powerful level. Thanks for the question!

      @@thedungeon1578 Thanks for your quick reply. You have given me a lot to think about. I have played in many campaigns that didn't wind up finishing because life and things got in the way. • @TheRobversion1

      i think the correct question to ask is what level does your dM expect the campaign to end? then theorycraft for that. like our campaigns typically end at 13-16 so i never factor higher level abilities and spells in my builds. in fact i usually try to make sure that my build is online/done by levels 8-10.
      i think if you're picking the conquest pal, might as well focus on the aura which may lead you to choices away from sorc (the archfey 1 dip is particularly good for the aura). winter eladrins and dragonborns with the dragonfear feat give you ore options.
      if the campaign was going level 20, then i'd definitely do a 7/13 or 8-12 split. if i was concerned with losing out on 9th level spells then i wouldn't have bothered playing a conquest pal to begin with and just take a pal 2 dip then go sorc most of the way (with perhaps a 1 level detour into hexblade).

    Hi, is it worth It to only take five levels of divine souls sorcerer? Or splitting 11 Paladin and 9 sorcerer. I still want to play a paladin of Conquest mostly, but this multiclass Is very good.

    • @thedungeon1578
      @thedungeon1578  4 года назад +1

      I think so. There's a lot of good points to split on. The only problem with 5 sorcerer levels is that you'll have very few sorcery points, but if you just want to use them on boss fights and stuff, it can be just fine. I actually think an 11/9 split is very good though; you'll only have up to 5th level slots, but if you mostly want to just smite anyways, and use spells situationally, that's basically perfect. It also allows you to get some of the higher level paladin abilities, which are nothing to laugh at either.

    I really wanted to play a Thunder and Lightning-based Paladin and none of the Oaths really hit that spot, so that's why my first-ever character was a Sorcadin without my really knowing how super-powerful Sorcadins were. He had an AC of 21 with Plate armor and Defence fighting style, and since I took War Caster at Lvl 4 he could also cast Shield whenever (this was character level 5 since I really wanted the thunder and lightning-based cantrips and Thunderwave, so I took my first level of Sorcerer at character level 2 - I don't recommend doing this from an optimization standpoint, but it really made the character feel and play differently right from the start, as opposed to the other Paladins I've played throughout my career).
    I remember I once cast Shield of Faith just as combat started for an AC of 23 and then just as the DM gleefully announced that an enemy finally hit me (after at least five or so misses) I said 'nope' and cast Shield. I also had a 20 CHA (my rolls for stats weren't stellar but I did get an 18 so I had 20 CHA right from level 1). I will say it felt VERY underwhelming when it came to offence as soon as your spells dry out. That's why I'm making my second Sorcadin with the Dueling fighting style right now, to at least be able to get 10 dmg from auto attacks somewhat consistently. But in terms of defense that Sorcadin was just a powerhouse unlike anything I've played or seen since.

    • @thedungeon1578
      @thedungeon1578  4 года назад

      Agreed. Also, as you mention, the offense is pretty weak when the spell slots run out. However, I also have found this problem starts to resolve itself as you get to higher levels and get more spell slots. Eventually, the Sorcadin has more spell slots than a pure paladin, while also having the ability to convert sorcery points to spell slots and vice versa. However, it does take longer to reach a comfortable level of spell slots, due to multi-classing.

    • @theHeavyMetalHermit
      @theHeavyMetalHermit 4 года назад

      @@thedungeon1578 Yeah, and that's not even a bad thing. It enables you to make more meaningful choices. For example, I remember when this Sorcadin was completely drained I had him fun up to our Barbarian who was a 0 HP and heal him up, since the Barbarian was able to do way more damage at that point. It's not as fun as just attacking, but it's an option that I wouldn't have taken as a Fighter or a Barbarian. And as someone who's recently played characters that basically boil down to the Attack action, this felt more interesting, even when the damage was lacking.

      A 7th level paladin can prepare cha mod + 3 spells from the paladin spell list up to level 2 spells each day from that list.
      A level 13 Sorcerer can use spells up to level 7 and would know 15 spells from that list.
      Combining the spellcasting of both classes would give you slots of a 16th level caster so you would have an 8th level slot to be used for sorcery points for more metamagic or to power level slots for smiting.
      Just pick the spells that seem good to you like, but you want Shield and Absorb Elements

  • @Byssbod

    I'm confused. You're saying casting unquickened haste means you can't attack turn 1.
    But When haste is active you get to make an additional action on turn 1 don't you? So you can attack once with that action.
    Also I am unsure why you're 'taking' bless from your Divine soul list when it's already given to you as a paladin no strings attached. I think there were other examples of you doing this. Otherwise it was a nice video and I wrote some stuff down

    • @thedungeon1578
      @thedungeon1578  4 года назад

      Sorry, just to clarify - Bless is coming from the Divine Soul for free, due to the alignment. You don't have to take it as a spell selection. As for haste, you do get an extra action, which can be used to make 1 attack. So I should have been more clear. I simply meant that casting it as a bonus action lets you take advantage of that extra attack and still use your normal attacks all in the same round. Excellent questions though; I should have been more clear.
