I think a really synergistic build is Oathbreaker Paladin with Hexblade Warlock. 8 levels of Oathbreaker and 12 levels of Hexblade. Polearm mastery with lifedrinker means 3 attacks with your charisma modifier trippled on each of em.

    • @thedungeon1578

Yes, 100%. That's a very strong build. It takes a while to fully come online, but lifedrinker plus the bonus action attack is amazing. Maybe even add GWM if you can afford it and have reliable ways of getting advantage. Plus you have the option of double smites. Pretty ridiculous. Thanks for the comment!

@@thedungeon1578 Yeah, I honestly think that Oathbreaker Paladin's allow for the best RP and is my favorite subclass in DnD. My favorite build with Oathbreaker is 12 levels of Oathbreaker Paladin and 8 levels of The UA beast barbarian. You use your claws and unarmed attacks and you're basically a Lycanthropic murder machine. I made a character like that which was a conversion of an old 3.5 concept I had. A blast to play.

nice. my version of this focuses on the summoner aspect of oathbreaker more and adds in a tertiary class in the eloquence bard to ensure control undead never fails. gets more spells, spell slots but i had to give up lifedrinker.

That oath of ancients aura isnt really worth it if you don't need to tbh as it just makes you aoe bait. it doesn't give you advantage to saves. it just halves spell dmg which tbh isn't really that scary.
surprisingly i haven't played any palocks until recently. played my 1st ever in a short campaign a couple of months ago and it was because my DM finally relented and allowed me to play an oathbreaker. I'll share the level 10 theorycraft below:
"The Con-Knight" (basically a inspired by the theme of a con-man)
    oathbreaker 6, eloquence 3, hexblade 1
    role: summoner
    custom lineage-feytouched (cha)
fighting style: blessed warrior (guidance, toll the dead)
    asi: +2 cha
key spells: guidance, bane, aid, find steed, warding bond, mind sliver
    tactics:
    pre-combat:
find/ask your DM for a revenant. use unsettling words, mind sliver and bane to lower it's saves then use control undead. repeat every 23-24 hours.
ride find steed as independent mount. cast aid on yourself, revenant and steed. cast warding bond on your revenant or steed.
    round 1:
    action: bane the bbeg
    bonus action: unsettling words
    revenant: vengeful glare
steed: move in and attack (this would be auto-crit if the bbeg is paralyzed by vengeful glare)
    reaction: shield/hellish rebuke as needed
    round 2:
if enemy is paralyzed by vengeful glare:
    bonus action: hexblade's curse
action: attack x2. divine smite on hits. auto-crit
    find steed: attack. auto-crit
    revenant: vengeful glare
if enemy is not paralyzed by vengeful glare:
    bonus action: hexblade's curse
    action: mind sliver
    find steed: attack
    revenant: vengeful glare

My favourite character ever was an Oathbreaker 8 / Hexblade 12 fallen Aasimar.
He grew up in a cult (as a conquest Paladin / Warlock) of Levistus.
But when Levistus asked him for the sacrifice of his wife (to free Levistus), he refused and ran away.
I know Oathbreakers usually are evil, but he was true neutral. He knew that he would go to hell once he died, and tried everything to avoid that fate. That was anything he cared about.
He would have done anything to stay alive.
Despite his power, he was always the one arguing for peaceful solutions and diplomacy (mostly he argued with our life cleric, ironically).
He even tried to turn himself into a vampire or lich, but was not successful.
In the end, he learned the importance of others, and became less self focused.
The once evil cultist had become a team player.
He sacrificed his life for the group, not afraid of Levistus any longer.
    RIP Corvus

    • @aldoushuxley5953
      @aldoushuxley5953 4 года назад +1

I used a spear and a shield btw, together with PAM.
My DM used the class feature UA, so I had animate dead, and always had a couple of skeleton servants with me.
That lead to a lot of arguments with our clerics, which was interesting.
In Corvuses opinion, he was just saving people from hell. He had yet to meet a man free of sin.
And if, in the process, he could discover how to turn himself undead and save his soul, even better.
I know most oathbreakers are evil (because most paladins are lawful good), but they don't have to be!

    • @aldoushuxley5953
      @aldoushuxley5953 4 года назад +1

At higher level, Corvus was also a surprisingly good necromancer, between the specter, animate dead, create undead and danse macabre, there were a lot of sources for undead to work with the aura of hate.
I rarely used that in combat though. That can become annoying quickly.

    • @thedungeon1578
      @thedungeon1578  4 года назад

Choose a Patron that's going to give you some sort of melee benefit then; I'd suggest either Hexblade for the charisma as everything and maybe shield (since you can cast it with your Paladin spell slots), or Fiend since you can then get temp hp every time you kill something (it won't be a lot, but constantly getting 6-8 each time you kill something can really make a difference in how long your character can go). But honestly, Archfey and Celestial both have some decent perks as well. The nice thing is, that if you're going Paladin mostly, you don't need to go Pact of the Blade for the 2nd attack, you can really pick any of them. If you want a nice familiar go chain, if you want ritual spells (though low level ones only), you can go tome. It gives you some good flexibility.

For a primarily paladin character Hexblade is by FAR the best option IMO. I would start as Paladin, then take 1 level Warlock. The 1 level Hexblade gives you Hex Warrior that allows you to use Charisma for attack and damage rolls with ANY 1 handed weapon. Stay using a sword and board build until level 8. For levels 3-6 you take levels in paladin. This gives you Divine Smite, and Extra Attack, + 1 ASI (Charisma). Levels 7-8 take warlock to 3rd level. I would Definitely take Pact of the Blade, and be sure to switch out one of your invocations for Improved Pact Weapon. This allows you to use your pact weapon as a spell casting focus for warlock spells, as well as removes the 1 handed weapon restriction. At this point... you can use ANY weapon in the game and have it run off of your charisma stat. If you wish to continue with shield and 1 handed weapon that is fine, but I personally like switching to a 2-Handed weapon at this point. Since the patron for Hexblade is a sentient weapon, I don't see this as a problematic multiclass from a thematic standpoint. The story could be your character wants to serve X cause but lacks the physical strength to be very effectual. The Hexblade patron sees this and reaches out in a dream, offering to grant him the power to be a paladin without peer in exchange for X service or w/e. Maybe the paladin has to find the sentient weapon that is the patron and free it from a terrible owner or something. Anyways...all that to say you can totally flavor Hexblade to not be evil, and can totally make it work with ANY paladin subclass. My favorites however are Devotion, Oathbreaker, and Ancients. Devotion's channel divinity "Sacred Weapon" fully cancels out the -5 from Great Weapon Master, so once you're past level 8, this could be MASSIVE amounts of damage. If you decide you want to defend your party, Ancients gives your party GODLY defense against magic. With a +5 to saving throws AND resistance to the damage you can effectively reduce the damage to 1/4 of the total. Oathbreaker, is for a more "big brain" group of players IMO. If you have a wizard or Arcana Domain cleric in your party that can cast Nystul's Magic Aura, they can allow your whole party to benefit from Aura of Hate, by making them appear as "Fiends" or "Undead" permanently. Granted this buff would also apply to any enemies of those types within your aura as well, and you cannot turn it off... so be careful. Oathbreaker is also a DMG subclass that is intended for the DM to use in creation of Villain characters so check with your DM if it's OK to use first.
One thing to note: You will need a minimum of 13 strength to multi-class out of paladin. However, since Hex Warrior allows attacks to run off of Charisma, and spell casting for both classes is Charisma based, and most paladin class features are charisma based, it makes sense to stack charisma as high as possible. For this reason I do NOT recommend putting any more than 13 points in Strength. This allows you to wear the Chain Mail as your starting equipment provides, but I suggest allocating 14 dexterity and switching to Medium Armor, when you can afford Half Plate. It's probably not worth switching to breastplate unless you want to ditch the stealth disadvantage. If you rolled very well at creation or have extra feats, Medium Armor Master is worth considering. If you have 16 dex, it makes your Half Plate grant equal AC to Full Plate, and removes the disadvantage on stealth. I would rank this as a lower priority though.
For standard array, I would suggest 13 str, 14 dex, 12 con, 8 int, 10 wis, 15 cha. If you're taking a race that gives a strength bonus consider putting the 12 in str so it maxes out at 13-14, and put your 13 in Con and you can pick up a feat or ASI to balance it out later.
Those are the basics. It's a highly customizable build in terms of mechanics and flavor, but all the options are very powerful. I would follow the build as closely as possible until level 8, to avoid playing a character that feels excessively weak. IF you delay your extra attack and divine smite by more than 1 level, this build will feel very weak until you get those features. Personally, I like starting as a Variant Human and taking Polearm Master as my feat. This allows me to have 2 attacks / round from the jump, and then I get my 3rd attack at level 6, and when I switch to 2-handed weapons and get GWM, I have reach, and 3 attacks per round, and the damage is absurd even without smites.

I am interested in the idea of Paladin, Warlock, Sorcerer build and how you would optimize such a thing or if it wouldn't be as effective? Like oath of vengeance, hexblade, and shadow sorcerer on paper setting out. Seems like a good charisma focused blend. My character is going to hell for the campaign, so I think there could be good opportunities here.

I guess it depends how much of each you want, and whether you want to do more melee or more casting. You could easily make a Paladin with say 6 levels, take 1 level of Hexblade for the Cha as your attack stat, and 13 levels of sorcerer. That is a pretty strong mix, giving you extra attack, smites, and still a decent spell selection and some meta magics. If you want only 2 or 3 levels of Paladin and just use booming blade/greenflame blade, and take more warlock (say 2 or 3 levels for some invocations, or even 5 and get extra attack for warlock, instead of paladin + Eldritch Smite) you could do that instead. I think that could be pretty strong too, but I probably favor 6 paladin over 5 warlock, mostly for the aura of protection.
You could also take less sorcerer, since it's probably the last class I'd take in this mix, but I think that higher level spells + more sorcery points is pretty tempting.

should work like most witch knight combinations though i'd personally choose something else than shadow sorc. Divine or wild will bring more mechanically since hex/sorc/pal typically have their bonus action clogged already with quicken spell, hexblade's curse, etc. i'd also choose conquest over vengeance as again the bonus action is clogged already. or just not get a pal subclass.
depending on whether you want to be a multiattacker or booming blader, the level spreads would change. personally, i lean towards booming blade since if you're trying to smite on every attack, that's going to eat up spell slots quickly. i'd go with sorc 17, pal 2, hex 1. no extra attack and you rely on booming blade but you get 9th level spell and alot spell slots for smiting. higher level spell slots can be used to make up for the lost extra attack by summoning draconic spirit/celestial for a bunch of extra attacks (3 at 6th, 4 at 8th). going divine sorc here also means you can add a bunch of cleric buffs to the mix like death ward and aid while also giving youo a sustained bonus action in spiritual weapon to again mitigate for the loss of extra attack.
