He was in a deleted scene in Last Crusade as well. The joke in the scene was that, this time, Indy knocks him out with one punch.
You can still see the actor in the final movie, I think. Before the blimp takes off, Indy looks out the window and sees Colonel Vogel and a big bald guy running up to the blimp. That's him.

Aria, I don't think the filmmakers were trying to offend Indians with purposeful intent and with malice.
Indiana Jones ALWAYS has had gross out scenes as part of the franchise and in this particular Indy film they pushed the horror and stomach churning elements to another level. Spielberg and Lucas have said they were in a bad place mentally while working through really messy and painful divorces. That spurred them to switch to a darker tone than even "Raiders" with "Temple."
Also, the palace was under an evil curse by the malevolent, mystical Thuggee cult leader, so the banquet scene was meant as foreshadowing.

One thing for sure is that the characteristics of this installment helped define Indiana Jones the character and this series. The rope bridge. The feast. The bugs. The heart. Short Round, etc.
The opening "Anything Goes" sequence was either Spielberg's or Lucas's opportunity to do a big classic Hollywood kind of musical number; I can't remember which one said that. Yes, it is out of scale with the size of the club but much like one of those productions would have been.
Your assumption about Willie being an agent would have made for a neat character.

    • @dan_hitchman007
      @dan_hitchman007 3 месяца назад

The musical number was an homage to big, splashy musical performances that you would get in the 1930's, which was the setting for the three classic films.

  • @bossfan49

Roshan Seth and Amrish Puri both tried to diffuse the complaints against the film by explaining that it's meant to be fantasy, and in part, a joke about how Westerners are ignorant of Eastern cultures.

Filmmakers were unable to get permission to shoot scenes in India. The Indian government requested a copy of the script, and demanded that the word "Maharajah" be removed, fearing that the content did not reflect their culture. As a result, production was moved to Sri Lanka.

Thank you for translating the parts you could, it always works better for me when I know some of what is being said in the background. Of course, using Sri Lankan extras it just makes sense they would let them, as untrained actors, speak their native tongue. Always remember, most of the people who see this wouldn’t know the difference.
For me, Amrish Puri as Mola Ram is a gift of a throwback to classic movie serial villains, truly evil and unredeemable. He does the job with just the right amount of over-the-top leers and laughs. Great reaction, Aria.

Someone else may have said it, Willie sings "Anything Goes" in Mandarin. Or maybe Cantonese? I'm almost sure it's in Mandarin. And I love Willie Scott! She's not Marion, but she wasn't suppose to be. Great comic relief! And for a treat, check out Gunga Din - a film from 1939 with Cary Grant. In a way, it's almost a prequel to this film. Thugees, a rope bridge, a bald high priest... great fun! One more thing, the actor playing Mola Ram, this was the first time I think he shaved his head for a role. He liked it so much I think he kept shaving it afterwards - is that right?

The first scene takes place in Club Obi Wan, a reference to Star Wars.
8:22 The village elder did not speak a word of English. The was fed his lines one take at a time and he just repeated what he heard.
14:09 India's Government banned this movie in India, partly because of the weird food in this scene.
22:46 Another reason is because they portrayed Shiva like a monstrous demon.
24:21 The reason why this movie is so dark is because writer George Lucas was going through a nasty divorce at the time. His ex was awarded a portion of sales from the Star Wars movies. This is why Lucas made the Special Editions of Star Wars.. He would not have to pay her any of those sales. By the way, happy 80th birthday to Lucas yesteray.
31:07 All of these distant shots in the tunnels are stop-motion animation with animators moving little puppets frame by frame. A camera is mounted on a cart.
Good point about the water falling into the lava, I never noticed that.

    I absolutely loved your reaction!
    Thank you!!!
I think this is the best reaction I have seen to Temple of Doom! I really enjoyed watching you enjoy it. 😃
I’ve seen this movie so many times but I can’t speak Hindi so it was great that you could tell us what some of the people were saying - I really enjoyed that. Also makes me really impressed with you - I always admire people who can speak more than one language.
And you also pointed something out I’d never ever thought of before - about how did the water manage to reach them at the end and not fall into the chasms of molten lava?!? That’s hilarious. But this is just a silly fun action movie, which doesn’t take itself seriously.
And I’m so glad you didn’t seem to take offense at anything. So many people nowadays are so woke and want to virtue signal about meaningless things (and yet when important things happen they don’t care).
Just because this movie had some Indians as villains doesn’t mean the movie is saying all Indian people are in evil cults. When people accuse this movie of being offensive it’s just ridiculous. When most American movies have evil American characters that’s not saying all Americans are evil. And when comedies make fun of some American characters it’s not making any serious statement about all Americans.
And the palace food scene is so deliberately over the top and ridiculous I can’t believe anyone takes it seriously - I can’t believe anyone seriously thinks the movie is saying Indian people eat that food - they just tried to think of some really disgusting things to gross the movie audience out - and it was fun watching your reaction to that.
I also really enjoyed it when you gave some needed assistance to your companion on the sofa - I had noticed she had begun to look a little sleepy and needed a bit of a pick me up ☺️
Thank you for another great reaction!
I hope you react to Indy 3 soon! 🥹

I'm ashamed to admit this, but I first saw this movie when I was a kid and, as a result of the banquet scene being seared into my young mind, I steadfastly refused to eat any Indian cuisine until my early 20s. Obviously, I felt pretty silly about this once it was made painfully clear to me that people from India do not in fact eat chilled monkey brains.
While Lucas and Speilberg may not have meant any malicious intent by their characterization of the Indian people, they certainly could have used more discretion when considering that the target audience for this film would be primarily children from the West. Obviously, these films are supposed to recreate the serials of the 1930s and 40s that had no such concern with presenting other cultures in a sympathetic light, but you'd think someone involved with this production in the 1980s would have urged less ignorance be involved in the script. The movie is still fun, but while it was my favorite Indy film when I was a kid, I have a hard time sitting through it these days because the tone is so wildly different from Raiders. Fortunately, they were able to merge the tones of the first two films perfectly into what I consider to be the best movie of the trilogy, Last Crusade.

She converted to Judaism, and they are now one of the major power couples in Hollywood. Kate had a daughter from her previous marriage, who is also an actress. Her name is Jessica Capshaw, she is probably best known for her role on 'Grey's Anatomy' as pediatric surgeon Dr. Arizona Robbins. This is not my favorite of the Indiana Jones movies...the next one is. 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade' is by far my favorite. The idea of Mola Ram taking someone's heart out and burning it came from George Lucas, who felt his ex-wife did the exact same thing to him. There are some fun-facts about this movie. The exterior of Pankot Palace was realised through the use of both matte paintings & a set constructed at Elstree Studios here in the UK. The bridge & village sequences were filmed in Sri Lanka. Oh & the bats are fruit bats, not vampire bats. Harrison Ford suffered a severe spinal disc herniation by performing a somersault while filming the scene with the assassin in Jones's bedroom. A hospital bed was brought on set for Ford to rest between takes. Lucas stated, "He could barely stand up, yet he was there every day so shooting would not stop. He was in incomprehensible pain, but he was still trying to make it happen." The guard crushed by the roller was played by Pat Roach; the same actor who played the Nazi guard who is diced by the plane in Raiders!!! He also played General Kael in Willow. Keep up the good work.

What were they eating in that first village? The stuff where Indy said that it was more food than they eat and she was insulting them.

We're glad you took this movie's depiction of India in good spirits, Aria. Again, we dumb Americans apologize for our ignorant portrayal of your people and culture and we're glad you enjoyed the movie regardless. And thanks a lot for the Hindi translations.

I want to say the criticism re: stereotypes of Indian culture is overstated and seen solely through modern eyes (ie extra-woke)… I’m African and was not offended by the second Ace Ventura film., and in general I get annoyed when people get offended on my behalf. But then, I’m not Indian and anyone who is Indian and is truly offended by the film, has a right to be.

All these complains usually are coming from people who have no clue. Seen a reaction of one such "modern audience" type to Spaceballs and she couldn't stop complaining about "Jewish jokes" while the director Mel Brooks is Jewish himself and he's known to make fun of Jewish stereotypes. Usually, the real people who these wokies are trying to "shield" have no problems with this stuff, cause they're people in a real world and having a sense of humor. Like you mentioned with depicting Africa in Ace Ventura, you have no problem with it. Aria has no problem with Temple of Doom and Jews have no problem with Mel Brooks. All the fuss are coming from the people that doesn't know how humor or anything really related to real world outside twitter works.

    1. Some folks don't care for this one very much, but I do. It's all kinds of fun.
    2. Just a small suspension of belief regarding the lifeboat drop out of the plane, and the coal car landing perfectly on the tracks.🙄
    3. IRL Ford could fly that plane.
    4. When I was in the US Navy I got to eat monkey (but not monkey brains) and tasted dog in the Philippines.
    5 Shortround is "Billy Badass"🤬😎
    6. Disneyland already has a "Temple of the Lost Ark" so another one of the ride through the tunnel/mine would be cool too. Assuming you can afford it.🙄
    7. Kate Capshaw got the Willie gig because she was dating and later became
    Spielberg's wife.
    8. Fun act: The guy that plays the guy getting crushed is the same actor that played the guy that goy hit with the propellor in "Raiders of the lost ark".
    9. Coolest villain ever.👹

"Mola Ram! Prepare to meet Kali... in Hell!"
Fun Fact: You can make your own "chilled monkey brains" if you want. All you need is custard and raspberry sauce. Chill and serve.
Mola Ram Fact: Amrish Puri shaved his head for the role of Mola Ram. This created such an impression that he kept this look and became one of India's most popular film villains.
Lost In Translation Fact: D.R. Nanayakkara, cast as the Indian village Shaman, did not speak a word of English. He delivered his lines phonetically by mimicking Steven Spielberg who was prompting him off-camera. The pauses in his dialogue were therefore not for dramatic effect, but rather waiting for his next line.
Location Location Fact: The rope bridge used during the final fight scene was actually suspended a couple of hundred feet across a gorge on location in Sri Lanka. Acrophobic Steven Spielberg would never walk over it, and had to drive a mile and a half to reach the other side. Harrison Ford, on the other hand, had no such fear, and would run across it at full speed.
Practical Jokers Fact: While filming the whipping scene, the crew played a practical joke on Harrison Ford. While he was chained to a large stone, Barbra Streisand appeared, dressed in a leather dominatrix outfit. While Streisand chided him for Hanover Street (1979) "the worst movie (she) ever saw" as she whipped him. She continued whipping him for Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977) and then Carrie Fisher then threw herself in front of Ford to protect him. This entire sequence was filmed.

Not true, despite what's on the Big Bang Theory. Without Dr. Jones the Nazi's wouldn't have found the Ark and then killed themselves off for Indy to then take possession.
As for The Last Crusade, that's easy. Indy found the shield beneath the library which had directions to where the Grail was kept, and Indy's the one who actually passed the tests to reach the Grail.
