  • Roberto González, an international human rights lawyer, joins panelists Tatyana Eatwell, an international human rights lawyer, and Julie S. Sunday, the Assistant Deputy Minister for consular, security, and emergency management at Global Affairs Canada. They discuss how courts in authoritarian regimes lack judicial independence and repeatedly violate due process. As a result, those who are arbitrarily detained must seek justice and freedom beyond their domestic legal systems, and instead through international legal mechanisms and diplomacy. Additionally, they discuss the best methods to seek international justice, from UN treaty bodies and Special Procedures, to regional human rights mechanisms, universal jurisdiction, and international diplomacy.
