We moved from Cape Cod to rural Allamakee county (NE Iowa). We love the conservative values, freedom, and low cost of living. The people are awesome. Highly recommended. Our family of 5 doesn't really require a bunch of big box stores, so our area is great for us. That said, if looking for the natural beauty of NE Iowa (rolling hills like upstate NY) - AS WELL AS COMFORT / EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES - you might want to research Decorah in neighboring Winneshiek county. I had a job when we relocated, so we didn't really have the stress of a job search in our move. It was just good to escape crazy leftists and control freaks. You mention Des Moines... it is a largish city with crime, heavier taxes, and leftist nutjobs in the schools and city government. But, should still be a huge positive change coming from NYC.
@@Driftless-Ramblings Appreciate your comment and perspective. Your synopsis is perfect and definitely will be taking into consideration for our decision in moving from NYC. Also, thank you for Decorah another neighboring research site. Best to you and your family, 😎

Hi I will be relocating to Davenport for a few months. Is it racially diverse? Not meant to be weird my question there, it's just because I'm Asian and want to have a good experience.
@@birdlynn417 Agreed! Closer to the bigger cities like Cedar Rapids metro or Des Moines metro have areas away from the rural cornfields. Also other options are cedar falls/Waterloo, Iowa city
Iowa has to be better than Florida. My house payment went from 550 to 1200 per month. Car insurance is 400 The cost of food is ridiculous. Electricity has gone up 200 more per month. It is just too expensive in my area. I don't live in a big city.
Thanks for sharing your experience. It is not fun with how the country is going when it comes to cost of living. Iowa is better than most fortunately when it comes to cost of living. Hopefully we can keep it that way.
If you like no sun for days depending where in Iowa it's not fun Do not move to Dubuque it's boring sometimes Igrew up there now live in Tx but sometimes I want to go back
Some of the things I know about Iowa, having moved here from Texas 30 years ago, that he did not mention: Don't swim in the water; they post a fecal count, it's full of nitrogen run off too. Canoe and boat, but don't swim. There are corn and soybean fields in Des Moines, but they're hidden and they do spray. There are meat packing plants that put off a horrible smell when they are rendering the carcasses. The school system (DMPS) is awful; you will want to home school. "Iowa nice" .... I have found this to be more of a 'nice to your face and nasty behind your back'. Iowa is very, very conservative. No purple here. The State Fair.... just don't. The rides are not maintained, the food is marginal, the lines are long, there is no air conditioning (and the temps get up into triple digits in August). The first time I ever saw a man pee himself in public, shake it off his leg, and walk on by, was at the State Fair. My small child was almost hit by a golf cart riding party one year, there are constantly fights on the opening weekend nights (East Side Pride week) and everything is extremely over priced. Winter is brutal, he wasn't kidding: -25 or lower and a whole lot of snow and wind. That starts in November and ends in April. Just the snow though, the wind stays all year. Summer, as I said earlier, gets into the triple digits with high humidity. There are a lot of tornados. A lot. Some of the good things he did not mention: It's gorgeous. There is prairie everywhere if you know where to look. There are still patches of old growth forest. There are plants and geological features in northeastern Iowa that are unique to the state due to glaciation patterns. In the country you can see all the stars at night. In all, I'd say don't come here. lol I don't want the crowd. Iowa has been the best kept secret in the country. You'll hate it. (I'm joking, in case you can't tell)
We have a fair number of Amish and Mennonites in NE Iowa, but not really in any concentrated location. My favorite greenhouse in Waukon is an Amish operation.
