This is one of the first times that I've heard another artist express what it feels like to be so in love and obsessed with creating that you almost start to resent it. I feel so connected to your process and openness and am in awe of you. This is truly a masterpiece.

I clicked on this video with no intention whatsoever of watching the whole thing, I thought ‘well I’ll just see what this is and move on’ and before I knew it I was at the end of the video, blinded by tears, inspired and in awe. This is one of the, if not THE most moving and beautiful pieces of art I’ve ever seen in my life, it would be insane to see your painting in person. The colors, texture and the ‘fogginess’ make the painting look ethereal and otherworldly. Seeing you talk about and go through your creative process, roadblocks, moments of inspiration forced me to come to terms with the fact that as an artist and as a human I’ve been failing myself, and every time I fail myself I lie and promise I’ll try harder next time, but now I’m standing in a six foot ditch with a shovel in my hands. I’m going to walk away from this video and I’m going to battle for my life or die trying. I was extraordinarily surprised that almost nobody in your painting picked a number below 50. When you posed the question, I paused and thought, and came to the conclusion that I’d probably be at 86 at most. I’m not a horrible person so I’m sure I couldn’t place myself at the bottom, but I’m so unhappy with myself, my inaction, the disappointment I cause in others, I couldn’t place myself any higher. After seeing the answers in your painting, I think I must be being overly self-critical, but the question is profound.
You sound so kind. I hear a bit of artistic regret in this comment. I display only a small sector of what it means to be an artist today. I love what I do, and I have the patience to create the "showey" type of art that I am making, but I hope you can consider yourself a success story in whatever you achieve. Being an artist isn't about making a 10 foot showpiece. it is about the magic of seeing the beauty in the world. listening to the birds, hearing what others are saying, Waking up and taking a breath. that is an artist. Going on a slow, thoughtful walk is just as valid as this painting. Please see your own success. All art is valid, and all art makes the world better. Hello... Just found you on "RUclips" and I'm absolutely signed up to watch your work. I'm probably your grandparents age. I got my bachelors in studio art over 50 years ago, but stopped painting because the purpose of my life was asking the philosophical, metaphysical "WHY". Now, I'm gong back to painting at 70 plus years old. I'm not going to be a great artist, but the fun is in learning, and there is so much I can learn from you. I wish I could be invisible and watch you paint slowly, in real time for hours to understand how you apply the paint to get the "aliveness". "Colour Theory"... YES... I want and need to understand all the things that come out in your work. The way your communicate with your art is amazing ! I love the reference to Klimpt in this painting... or any painting.Same with John singer Sargent, but you explore colour as though Sargent and Van Gogh commingled their minds...with Klimpt added full measure into the mix. There are so many references to the best of the best. I could spend hours just looking at the upper left corner or upper right corner, trying to understand how the colours are laid down. Thanks for filming with so many details and insightful discussion !

the scale of this smacked me when you cut to the final debreif and like i had to walk away from my computer and look at it from a distance because your colours are unreal. a gorgeous, glowing harmony. i'd kill to see it in person, and if i'm lucky enough to achieve my dream of becoming a conservator one day i'd be honoured to protect works like yours for years to come. i actually really enjoy that concept of 1-100, because while i feel no one actually has an intrinsic value over another, your work reflects upon how those you hold close, and you by extension of painting this, value themselves. this has a beautiful esscense and you have such a true gift. i find there's something so incredibly beautiful about creating a painting in the sacred and otherworldly spirit of the reainnasance, but instead of depicting those from scripture, the subjects are your loved ones. also i'm listening to cactus tree for the first time and God does Joni Mitchell have an ethereal voice; her influence seeps through your paintings. i'm gushing like seven months late but i don't even careee because i've been touched and inspired and your way of describing colour theory gripped and inspired me as a younger artist and uhhhh i'm adopting gooped into my vocabulary

i loved this painting. your skill and idea are both beautiful. it does feel like humans floating through time together and how we’re all detached, yet so alike in ways we wouldn’t even believe. I’d say we’re all #1s. I think that shame in our past or our fears for the future might make us all feel like #100s at times. The way i look at it is that every mistake has brought us to the beauty of the now, and we all are worthy of feeling in love with life, ourselves, and our place on earth. Although boundaries might need to be drawn, there’s beauty in hoping that everyone can find the light within themselves and learning to accept that we can all prove the odds wrong. I especially love your concept and depth to the idea of the painting. I don't know... i'm such a shut-in that inevitably the silence in my head spirals into something important. If you force yourself to sit with yourself for a long time, and learn how to be comfortable with that, I expect you will come up with something you want to say. Usually when I am half dreaming on the cusp of sleep is when I come up with paintings. thats the only time i'm able to see visuals in my head so i try my best in those minutes to conjure as many images as possible. reflecting on past work or my life through writing helps me locate meaning as well.

The way you describe looking at those Klimt paintings being like listening to your favorite album for the first time is how I feel when I look at your work. It's so BOLD and commanding of your attention but have a beautiful softness and ethereal feel at the same time. I look forward to all of your videos!
Over the course of the video I actually found myself really loving the 1 to 100 question, but more for what it says about the collective rather than the individuals. I think it’s telling how people often want to stay away from the extreme ends of the spectrum - most people don’t want to call themselves a 1 or 2 out of a fear of narcissism, and rarely are people close to 100 even if they might think of themselves that way. But given the scenario where 100 people were forced to placed themselves in that kind of ranking, it would probably take forever just to sort out who gets to stand at the front or who “deserves” to stand in the end. Your painting reveals a bit of this dilemma as well which I really appreciate. The numbers only range from around 30 to 75, meaning no one featured in the image is very extremist about the way they view themselves. Personally, I feel like a rising concept in the modern world is the pursuit of being a leader or manager - this need to be just above average, an A-student or hard worker that climbs to the top of whatever social hierarchy they’ve found themselves in. At the same time, we also face the intrinsic need to feel timid at the idea of taking more success than we’ve earned, or rationalizing our worth at every step of the ladder. In the scenario you’ve painted, the figures twist together in a cluster around these numbers that orbit the center of 1 to 100. And there’s an inevitable conflict that arrises: as everyone tries to take up space in the center positions, who will sacrifice themselves to the edges? Who will allow themselves that nobility, or shame? Additionally, I find it interesting how many of the people you interviewed examined the question as ranking themselves in relation to God. It's interesting to view the question in how closely it marks a person to godliness, where the person at rank 1 is considerably the closest to God. Honestly, I like to think that God is more lenient than many people (especially Evangelical Christians) seem to think. An understanding God can see the good in most people to allow them into Heaven, and, ideally, I like to think the concept of Hell is totally abandoned, empty. There is no one person capable of the kind of evil that would cast them into an eternity of torture. At the same time, the common descriptions of Heaven make it seem almost like a hellish place to me, being that it exists in a sort of constant state of pleasure, in a vast, yet crowded expanse of unchanging nothingness and light... it all sounds kind of numbing. In that sense, the aspect of Hell that makes it daunting isn't necessarily the torture within, but the eternity of it -- the lack of any conclusive, describable end. I guess I say all of that just because I think your painting showcases a very human struggle. We all want to be placed somewhere in the middle. We hold onto the pursuit of being average -- even if its just slightly above or below average -- but fear the cost of being seen too close to either ends. Religion would have you believe that there is only one true answer: 1. That in order to be allowed through the gates of heaven one must prove themselves to be holy enough, good enough to have earned their place amongst God. Meanwhile, the 100 is immediately cast to Hell -- they are considered beyond saving and therefore denied even the opportunity to stand trial for their sins. And in between the two -- those released to the skies of Heaven or below the ground toward Hell -- is us, the rest of humanity here on Earth. We fear the end, and yet fear endlessness all the same. And so, we all become bodies collecting at the middleground, arguing against ourselves in pursuit of the title of 50. There is godliness in being perfectly ungodly. In being holy but not too unholy. In being perfectly, incomprehensibly average.
Sorry if this all sounds like rambling gibberish lmao, I just took my adderall and have a lot of thoughts on this piece that I wanted to get out... hopefully some of this makes sense at least

Just found you tonight, and I sat through this entire 46 minute video. I'm an old guy, and I've always thought that I have an artistic spirit, but due to family obligations and a lack of imagination on my own part, I never really pursued that part of myself. I mean, I've had a few short stories published, but time and insecurity always held me back. I'm retired now, and I've also been doing some website design and I enjoy expressing my visual ascetic that way. And I'm sitting on an unfinished fairly long biographic article about a personal hero that passed away during the covid pandemic and haven't touched that in months. With this one video, you've given me a lot to think about regarding pushing through self-doubt and ways to handle the emotional ups and downs when approaching a big project. Thanks so much for being you, and for sharing yourself with strangers. Take care of yourself, I think you're helping others more than you know with videos like this one.
Wow this video was wonderful. You articulate your process so well and the way you really captured that constant back and forth struggle when creating is something I resonate with so much. I have so many days when I'm paralyzed by how much my artwork really matters to me that I end up spending days if not weeks just staring at it and waiting for when I finally have some bravery to work on it again. And the final self critique at the end was great. I think it takes a lot of love and respect for your craft to finish a piece that's taken you 142 days and still be able to face the mistakes head on. This is the first video I've seen of yours but I really admire you and can't wait for your next pieces!

Oh i had no idea you had a youtube channel! it was really nice to watch and listen to your process for this piece, the hypothetical really interested me and the final piece is just amazing. the texture of your work is what drew me to it initially, and its lovely to see all the individual paint strokes up close. I am an artist too and I am amazed by the consciousness of your actions here. There is a specific idea that actually makes the viewer think and feel , which is usually the goal of the artist, and then there's research , anatomy studies with the references and much experimenting with the structure of the whole piece. And all the color theory and your conscious use mediums. I just think this project proved how smart and mature you are (it's the first video of you that I watched). I hope that one day my art will be at least a bit as conscious as yours. Genuinely impressed.

I was done with painting. I hated doing it because of the expectations of perfection. Now that I see someone with a hard time even making an amazing painting, it gave me motivation. I started doodling on a canvas and suddenly I have the need to create, to make anything at all. I thank them for sharing their experience, and for getting me out of a creative rut.

I have been working on a renaissance painting for the last two years while doing my other paintings. it's a painting of the historical scene from the navalbattle of the Spanish Silver Fleet against Admiral Piet Hein in 1628, since the navel battle is a hard subject to draw as a contemporary not many dare to start that project. Therefor seeking reference for this painting has been a real struggle, so I really had to paint it from a fragmented vision for what I had imagined the painting should look like in the end. started with 4 voc ships shooting at each other, rendering the water while imagining how the water was raging in waves having a battle of their own. Making the cloud follow perspective lines to lead the viewers eye to travel over the waves in the distance, showing how nature reacts to the battle, like seagulls scavenging the fallen seamen's guts of wreckage that are being massed by the tides. this painting is draining my supplies and soul since I have already done.400 days of painting on a 2m-5m canvas. Really appreciate the time you took to document your painting while working on this renaissance painting because I totally get the grind

Im also 20 and have been selling/making art for a long time, gave up on actively creating a few years ago though. Something super bittersweet about seeing someone my age make something so beautiful. I hope i can find my motivation again even if it takes a long time. Beautiful work I can see this being in a museum one day.

It’s very interesting to hear what other artists listen to while painting. I usually choose something the matches the atmosphere but sometimes I like to choose something with the same general meaning of the painting. In general music really does help the process alot

OH, btw, the red glow you're talking about in you color theory section is called Subsurface Scattering in 3D rendering. It's a property of skin, marble, wax, milk--anything that is translucent but not transparent---where the light travels through an object a short distance before bouncing out. As the light goes through, different wavelengths travel further than others. So, in skin, the red light goes further than the rest, and all shadow transitions will be redder than the skin surface. It's most noticeable in light that is angled against the skin (like a strong overhead light would be on the neck like what you noticed) or in thin areas that are backlit, like the webbing of your fingers or ears when sunlight is hitting it from behind.

It is extremely satisfying to watch a piece evolve from r a concept to a well executed final piece. This is one of those paintings I would sit infront of for hours in a museum. Just admiring every little detail…
I clicked on this video with no intention whatsoever of watching the whole thing, I thought ‘well I’ll just see what this is and move on’ and before I knew it I was at the end of the video, blinded by tears, inspired and in awe. This is one of the, if not THE most moving and beautiful pieces of art I’ve ever seen in my life, it would be insane to see your painting in person. The colors, texture and the ‘fogginess’ make the painting look ethereal and otherworldly. Seeing you talk about and go through your creative process, roadblocks, moments of inspiration forced me to come to terms with the fact that as an artist and as a human I’ve been failing myself, and every time I fail myself I lie and promise I’ll try harder next time, but now I’m standing in a six foot ditch with a shovel in my hands. I’m going to walk away from this video and I’m going to battle for my life or die trying.
I was extraordinarily surprised that almost nobody in your painting picked a number below 50. When you posed the question, I paused and thought, and came to the conclusion that I’d probably be at 86 at most. I’m not a horrible person so I’m sure I couldn’t place myself at the bottom, but I’m so unhappy with myself, my inaction, the disappointment I cause in others, I couldn’t place myself any higher. After seeing the answers in your painting, I think I must be being overly self-critical, but the question is profound.

I love what I do, and I have the patience to create the "showey" type of art that I am making, but I hope you can consider yourself a success story in whatever you achieve. I'm probably your grandparents age. I got my bachelors in studio art over 50 years ago, but stopped painting because the purpose of my life was asking the philosophical, metaphysical "WHY".
Now, I'm gong back to painting at 70 plus years old. I'm not going to be a great artist, but the fun is in learning, and there is so much I can learn from you.
I wish I could be invisible and watch you paint slowly, in real time for hours to understand how you apply the paint to get the "aliveness".
"Colour Theory"... YES... I want and need to understand all the things that come out in your work. The way your communicate with your art is amazing !
I love the reference to Klimpt in this painting... or any painting.Same with John singer Sargent, but you explore colour as though Sargent and Van Gogh commingled their minds...with Klimpt added full measure into the mix. There are so many references to the best of the best.
I could spend hours just looking at the upper left corner or upper right corner, trying to understand how the colours are laid down.

the scale of this smacked me when you cut to the final debreif and like i had to walk away from my computer and look at it from a distance because your colours are unreal. a gorgeous, glowing harmony. i'd kill to see it in person, and if i'm lucky enough to achieve my dream of becoming a conservator one day i'd be honoured to protect works like yours for years to come. i actually really enjoy that concept of 1-100, because while i feel no one actually has an intrinsic value over another, your work reflects upon how those you hold close, and you by extension of painting this, value themselves. this has a beautiful esscense and you have such a true gift.
i find there's something so incredibly beautiful about creating a painting in the sacred and otherworldly spirit of the reainnasance, but instead of depicting those from scripture, the subjects are your loved ones.

i loved this painting. your skill and idea are both beautiful. it does feel like humans floating through time together and how we’re all detached, yet so alike in ways we wouldn’t even believe. I’d say we’re all #1s. I think that shame in our past or our fears for the future might make us all feel like #100s at times. The way i look at it is that every mistake has brought us to the beauty of the now, and we all are worthy of feeling in love with life, ourselves, and our place on earth. Although boundaries might need to be drawn, there’s beauty in hoping that everyone can find the light within themselves and learning to accept that we can all prove the odds wrong. I just discovered your art prize competition video, and in following this one, as an art student going into university, I aspire to this level of creativity and skill. I especially love your concept and depth to the idea of the painting. I struggle with implementing deep concepts in my artwork and I am wondering if you could share any tips to taking ideas for artworks to a deeper level? Absolutely stunning artwork!
I don't know... i'm such a shut-in that inevitably the silence in my head spirals into something important. If you force yourself to sit with yourself for a long time, and learn how to be comfortable with that, I expect you will come up with something you want to say. Usually when I am half dreaming on the cusp of sleep is when I come up with paintings. thats the only time i'm able to see visuals in my head so i try my best in those minutes to conjure as many images as possible. reflecting on past work or my life through writing helps me locate meaning as well.

The way you describe looking at those Klimt paintings being like listening to your favorite album for the first time is how I feel when I look at your work. Over the course of the video I actually found myself really loving the 1 to 100 question, but more for what it says about the collective rather than the individuals. I think it’s telling how people often want to stay away from the extreme ends of the spectrum - most people don’t want to call themselves a 1 or 2 out of a fear of narcissism, and rarely are people close to 100 even if they might think of themselves that way. But given the scenario where 100 people were forced to placed themselves in that kind of ranking, it would probably take forever just to sort out who gets to stand at the front or who “deserves” to stand in the end.
Your painting reveals a bit of this dilemma as well which I really appreciate. The numbers only range from around 30 to 75, meaning no one featured in the image is very extremist about the way they view themselves. Personally, I feel like a rising concept in the modern world is the pursuit of being a leader or manager - this need to be just above average, an A-student or hard worker that climbs to the top of whatever social hierarchy they’ve found themselves in. At the same time, we also face the intrinsic need to feel timid at the idea of taking more success than we’ve earned, or rationalizing our worth at every step of the ladder.
In the scenario you’ve painted, the figures twist together in a cluster around these numbers that orbit the center of 1 to 100. And there’s an inevitable conflict that arrises: as everyone tries to take up space in the center positions, who will sacrifice themselves to the edges? Who will allow themselves that nobility, or shame?
Additionally, I find it interesting how many of the people you interviewed examined the question as ranking themselves in relation to God. It's interesting to view the question in how closely it marks a person to godliness, where the person at rank 1 is considerably the closest to God. Honestly, I like to think that God is more lenient than many people (especially Evangelical Christians) seem to think. An understanding God can see the good in most people to allow them into Heaven, and, ideally, I like to think the concept of Hell is totally abandoned, empty. There is no one person capable of the kind of evil that would cast them into an eternity of torture. At the same time, the common descriptions of Heaven make it seem almost like a hellish place to me, being that it exists in a sort of constant state of pleasure, in a vast, yet crowded expanse of unchanging nothingness and light... it all sounds kind of numbing. In that sense, the aspect of Hell that makes it daunting isn't necessarily the torture within, but the eternity of it -- the lack of any conclusive, describable end.
I guess I say all of that just because I think your painting showcases a very human struggle. We all want to be placed somewhere in the middle. We hold onto the pursuit of being average -- even if its just slightly above or below average -- but fear the cost of being seen too close to either ends. Religion would have you believe that there is only one true answer: 1. That in order to be allowed through the gates of heaven one must prove themselves to be holy enough, good enough to have earned their place amongst God. Meanwhile, the 100 is immediately cast to Hell -- they are considered beyond saving and therefore denied even the opportunity to stand trial for their sins. And in between the two -- those released to the skies of Heaven or below the ground toward Hell -- is us, the rest of humanity here on Earth. We fear the end, and yet fear endlessness all the same. And so, we all become bodies collecting at the middleground, arguing against ourselves in pursuit of the title of 50. There is godliness in being perfectly ungodly. In being holy but not too unholy. In being perfectly, incomprehensibly average.
Sorry if this all sounds like rambling gibberish lmao, I just took my adderall and have a lot of thoughts on this piece that I wanted to get out... hopefully some of this makes sense at least

Just found you tonight, and I sat through this entire 46 minute video. I'm an old guy, and I've always thought that I have an artistic spirit, but due to family obligations and a lack of imagination on my own part, I never really pursued that part of myself. I mean, I've had a few short stories published, but time and insecurity always held me back. I'm retired now, and I've also been doing some website design and I enjoy expressing my visual ascetic that way. And I'm sitting on an unfinished fairly long biographic article about a personal hero that passed away during the covid pandemic and haven't touched that in months.
With this one video, you've given me a lot to think about regarding pushing through self-doubt and ways to handle the emotional ups and downs when approaching a big project. Thanks so much for being you, and for sharing yourself with strangers. Take care of yourself, I think you're helping others more than you know with videos like this one.

Wow this video was wonderful. You articulate your process so well and the way you really captured that constant back and forth struggle when creating is something I resonate with so much. I have so many days when I'm paralyzed by how much my artwork really matters to me that I end up spending days if not weeks just staring at it and waiting for when I finally have some bravery to work on it again. And the final self critique at the end was great. I think it takes a lot of love and respect for your craft to finish a piece that's taken you 142 days and still be able to face the mistakes head on. This is the first video I've seen of yours but I really admire you and can't wait for your next pieces!

Oh i had no idea you had a youtube channel! it was really nice to watch and listen to your process for this piece, the hypothetical really interested me and the final piece is just amazing. the texture of your work is what drew me to it initially, and its lovely to see all the individual paint strokes up close. Theres just something so beautiful about the softness of it, a strange comparison but it almost looks felted, like you could reach your hand into it and it'd be as soft and warm as the colours.

I am an artist too and I am amazed by the consciousness of your actions here. There is a specific idea that actually makes the viewer think and feel , which is usually the goal of the artist, and then there's research , anatomy studies with the references and much experimenting with the structure of the whole piece. And all the color theory and your conscious use mediums. I just think this project proved how smart and mature you are (it's the first video of you that I watched). I hope that one day my art will be at least a bit as conscious as yours. Genuinely impressed.

I have been working on a renaissance painting for the last two years while doing my other paintings. it's a painting of the historical scene from the navalbattle of the Spanish Silver Fleet against Admiral Piet Hein in 1628, since the navel battle is a hard subject to draw as a contemporary not many dare to start that project. Therefor seeking reference for this painting has been a real struggle, so I really had to paint it from a fragmented vision for what I had imagined the painting should look like in the end. started with 4 voc ships shooting at each other, rendering the water while imagining how the water was raging in waves having a battle of their own. Making the cloud follow perspective lines to lead the viewers eye to travel over the waves in the distance, showing how nature reacts to the battle, like seagulls scavenging the fallen seamen's guts of wreckage that are being massed by the tides. this painting is draining my supplies and soul since I have already done.400 days of painting on a 2m-5m canvas.

It’s very interesting to hear what other artists listen to while painting. I usually choose something the matches the atmosphere but sometimes I like to choose something with the same general meaning of the painting. In general music really does help the process alot

OH, btw, the red glow you're talking about in you color theory section is called Subsurface Scattering in 3D rendering. It's a property of skin, marble, wax, milk--anything that is translucent but not transparent---where the light travels through an object a short distance before bouncing out. As the light goes through, different wavelengths travel further than others. So, in skin, the red light goes further than the rest, and all shadow transitions will be redder than the skin surface. It's most noticeable in light that is angled against the skin (like a strong overhead light would be on the neck like what you noticed) or in thin areas that are backlit, like the webbing of your fingers or ears when sunlight is hitting it from behind.

Given that the collective unconscious didn't fall into darkness, I would think that person number 75 and person number 25 probably aren't that dissimilar. I think people over all are actually pretty decent. I loved the video, can't wait to try a bigger piece myself. You did very well.
