  • Diagnosing VGT Turbo and Actuator Issues | Highway and Heavy Parts
Is your turbo or actuator giving you trouble, or maybe both? In this video, we guide you through a straightforward method to determine whether the issue lies with your turbo or your actuator.
First, if you're getting codes that point towards the actuator, it’s essential to verify if the problem is indeed with the actuator or if it’s a turbo issue.
Here's a simple way to check:
    - Remove the Actuator: Start by pulling the actuator off the turbo.
    - Inspect the Sector Gear: Grab the sector gear and attempt to move it from stop to stop.
    - If it doesn’t make full travel: This indicates a turbo issue, which may have caused the actuator to fail.
    - If it moves easily: It’s likely that the turbo is fine, and the problem lies with the actuator.
By following these steps, you can pinpoint whether to tackle the actuator first or if a turbo replacement is necessary.

Thank you for this video. My mechanic showed me the sector gear was seized and wouldn’t move at all on my Volvo d13 and I thought he was lying about the problem to make some money, but this video verified it and I’m a happy paying customer, thanks again!

I've seen a couple of turbos which moved very easily, but when we removed the exhaust side , the nozzle ring was worn that caused fault codes during operation.

Would appreciate some help here. 2011 Ram 4500 chassis cab. (Exhaust brake not working and low performance.) Checked VGT arm travel, moved easily full travel. With the actuator off I ran a calibration test, (pass.) Re-installed the actuator and completed calibration test, (pass.) No MIL. The strange thing is the VGT commanded VGT position AND the actual VGT position under heavy towing or just normal driving will never go under 70ish.% except under deceleration with zero throttle application. What the heck is wrong with this thing?

This could be an indication of a problem with the turbo but more information is needed. You can give us a call at 844-447-1453!

If it's the actuator, Is it an urgent fix? Or can it wait a few months. What are some possible side effects that'll come from waiting to get it fixed?

If you're running the VGT without a working actuator, the turbo will not run efficiently. Depending on where the vanes have stopped can play a role. If the vanes are currently in a closed position, it can cause choking of the engine or overspeeding of the turbine.
Give one of our ASE Certified Technicians a call and we can help get a new actuator or complete VGT out to you.

Thank you. So my car gave me this errors:
    1. Swirl-Flap Actuator, Position Sensor, Signal Permanent Open Circuit Or Short Circuit To Ground
    2. Charging Pressure Actuator, Activation: Permanent Open Circuit
    3. Oxygen Sensor Before Catalytic Converter, Permanent, Heating, Activation:
    Open Circuit
    Is this bad?

Any engine codes are worth checking out. Have a technician take a look at your vehicle to prevent any further damage.
