I like how CBBC explained Queen's passed away in simple language for children. Next, how about announcement from other countries, especially from Commonwealth countries.
It was the middle of the night in Australia (3:30am on the east coast)... I was watching a stream from the UK while flicking around the Australian channels before eventually finding one that switched over from the usual home shopping crud to the BBC feed. It took a little while for them to rush the local breakfast TV presenters to air early. Australia was never part of the rehearsed plans for media announcement in the UK, although our Governor General and PM had been informed by that time.
Why did News round have it HRH The Queen when it should have been HM The Queen?
@@ternilapilli The ABC did an announcement, but that was all I could see.
except they called her HRH
@@francismcdonnell753 I don't know the protocol, but technically at the point that Charles became His Majesty The King, doesn't that automatically make all other royals HRH, like there can only be one 'HM'? Like I say, I don't know how it works; I'm just postulating.
The announcement from CBBC was really good. To explain it so simply for children is really important. Huw Edwards, he was amazing.
"HRH"
@@joeybaseball7352 your children would probably not care if you die, so of course they wont care in this case as well.
@@joeybaseball7352 they do
@@Furry_Cultist yes, agree, and even if they didn’t, they should, and that’s why we teach them! Children are being shaped to become adults and participants of society, and as such they must be educated about our history, our current events, and what it all means, and also how to behave or what kind of feelings to expect. I liked how he started by indicating we had SAD news. This prepares the little ones to what they will hear.
@@joeybaseball7352 I'm a child, I care
To hear Huw Edwards say “The King” is just surreal.
He has been working towards this for his entire career, and he is, in my opinion, the right person to announce news this large. It is a once in a life-time opportunity, at-least for him.

Disgraceful how CTV treated Lisa LaFlamme btw.
That feeling when CBBC, a channel aimed at children, made a better announcement of the Queen's death than both ITV (you can clearly tell the host wasn't happy with how terribly late they handled the announcement) and Channel 5 combined…
I understood that ITN was very busy to provide 3 different breaking news simultaneously (for ITV, 4 and 5), a quite strange moment.
Meanwhile BBC provided at most 2 (BBC One/Two/News and CBBC)
I think the fact that BBC was already broadcasting about the Queen's health moments beforehand helped
You were evidently watching a different video to the one you commented on.
Newsround has always been very sensitive when it comes to braking news stories because it know kids as little as 5/6 will be watching and it has always been like this all the way back when it was original called John Cravens Newsround (the only news broad cast ever to be named after its presenter) since it started back in 1972
It was the first British television programme to break the news of the loss of the Space Shuttle Challenger on 28 January 1986 and the first in Britain to report an assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II in Vatican City in 1981 and provided the first reports from the Windsor Castle fire of November 1992 because it was shown around 5pm in the U.K.
@@yohanespasaribu8546 Except CBBC's card oddly said "HRH" instead of HM. Not really a news organization so one shouldn't be too hard on them.
Was not expecting such a good announcement from CBBC, they did a really good job.
Yeah, I appreciate that CBBC decided to go the high road and didn't sugarcoat it, but also explaining it in an easy way for kids to digest and understand. Kids may need some simplification to help them understand things a bit better, but they aren't stupid, and i'm really glad CBBC knows that.
Apart from the glaring error: she was HM, not HRH.
Lol
Newsround is a class act, such an important service to kids.
Why weren't you expecting it? Haven't they been preparing for this for years?
I love how they had an announcement for kids. It’s nice to know they also get news in a way that’s digestible for them…
They might be made aware that they're living in this moment where the Queen dying is something big happening, that they will fully understand and remember hearing it on CBBC when they are older in like 15 years time. But I doubt they'll care now as 4-7 year-olds. When I was their age watching CBBC, I didn't care or pay attention to those quick news shows, I was just anxious to get to what was on next.
Newsround began in the 1970s when it was known as “John Craven’s Newsround” so they have had decades of experience in delivering the news to children. 🙂
Honestly, having Newsround when I was growing up I think helped my develop a knowledge in news and keeping myself informed on current events.
@@spots7630 CBBC is supposedly for children aged 7+ (or at least that is who they say their programming is targeted at). I'm unsure if the channel aimed at viewers younger than 7-years-old (Cbeebies) has a version of Newsround, but I'm sure the news of the Queen's death is at least noteworthy to the older part of the age cohort you mentioned. After all, The Queen is probably the only person over the age of 30 that young people will actually be aware of - other than personal relationships of course.
Yes, because adults have no idea these days how to communicate to kids do they. They leave it upto media to fuck them up. Not my responsibility to bring up my kids properly
No disrespect to the other news broadcasters, I’m sure they did their best in the circumstances but Huw Edwards stands head and shoulders above. Such poise and professionalism. Quiet dignity and due deference.
He took "the call" and actually ran back to the studio . The reason he went live wearing a Black tie was it had been "confirmed " she had died .But nothing had been made formal...That took hours
He dropped the news like a bomb. Not at all measured. Terrible job.
@@melgrant7404 given that he had been on all afternoon on and off and had been preparing us for the worst I hardly think that’s a fair assessment. He read the statement as it was intended to be read, no ambiguity, no fumbling around, gave it to us straight but with genuine emotion. Clear and heartfelt, the way doctors are trained to give bad news. I don’t see how it could or should have been any different. There is a time and place for ambiguity and the death of the head of state is not it.
@@carforumwanker There's a set procedure where they have to be told when to make the announcement, as they need to wait for notices to be put on the Royal Family's website and outside Buckingham Palace's gates

You born yesterday . I am talking about when she died . Not when it officially announced
My mum was watching the rolling news about the Queen's health. She said that all of a sudden, all the news presenters, even the lady that does the sign language were wearing black. I think at that point the news channels knew that the Queen had passed away but had to wait until Buckingham Palace made the official announcement before they were allowed to break the very sad news of the Queen's passing.
Yes I believe she died overnight. It then took until the afternoon to get around to the people that really needed to know. Hence the sudden change in uniform for both liz truss and keir stamer halfway through parliament and then news presenters. The palace couldn't announce it though until the family made it to balmoral.
@@alexholt6810 And yet, still didn't wait for Harry to arrive.
Yes, I noticed that too re. the black clothing, I think they must have been strongly suspecting it, or already knew of her passing shortly before they announced the sad news.
Rest in Peace, Queen Elizabeth 🙏✝️🕊️
@@alexholt6810 it was reported that Charles and Anne had made it to Balmoral before she died but that everybody else missed her. That time-stamps it to sometime between midday, when it was reported that they had gone to Balmoral, and 1630 when the PM was reportedly told. The palace statement said that she died on the afternoon. Clearly everybody was going about normal-ish business in the morning then dropped everything to get to Scotland - that doesn't suggest she'd died the day before.
@@joshuapeckham2453 yeah the palace said she died with her son by her bedside but I think they have said that for national security reasons. If the palace came out and said the queen had died before the important people/sectors were notified then it could course problems. So the palace let the family know give them a chance to arrive at balmoral (hence the announcement about 45 minutes after harry, Andrew, anne etc arrived) , then they let the PM and leader of the opposition know, then they let the authorities know so they can prepare. By the time it has got to the people that need to know the palace then need to give the statement that the queen is unwell so that the public know why the family are all headed to balmoral and why the sudden change in attire for the pm and stamer. Once the statement is out the presenters also change attire as they are notified of operation unicorn. Once the family arrive at balmoral it's safe for the palace to announce her death. If she died in the late afternoon we wont have found out 2 hours later we would have found out at 10pm ghe earliest. Due to procedure there is alot of avenues that the crown has to go through due to national security before they can announce the death formally.
How on earth could ITV mess this up so badly? Most significant announcement in decades and they couldn't get the statement to their broadcaster when she needed it?
Absolute amateur hour from ITV.
Even their graphics and anthem were bad.
Their graphics looked tacky and their version of the anthem sounded cheap. It was like it was all just thrown together at the last minute even thought we all knew that this day was going to come eventually.
They were told hours previously they were all dressed in black waiting for the green light to broadcast, how were they not prepared for the big announcement.
Just awful and so disrespectful. That poor broadcaster having to front that unorganised chaos. The media have planned for this moment for years and ITV still managed to fail beyond words.
I'd rather they announce the world cup
It's ITV. They only do crappy soaps. I haven't watched anything on ITV in a decade. It's whole programming is devoted to stay at home mums and female pensioners.
Hue Edwards has got the balls, the professionalism and grace under pressure to handle this. Top effort from a true broadcaster... That clip said to the world, not just BBC viewers that the Queen was dead and the monarchy had passed to the new King.
Perfectly handled, perfectly delivered.

If I may say as a US citizen, I very much appreciate how straightforward the coverage of Her Majesty’s passing was on the BBC. I have grown quite disgusted at US coverage of our political figures’ passings.
I agree. A simple fade to black on the current programming, a "special report" banner with near silence, and then the immediate announcement. Very simple. Very respectful.

It was so heartbreaking hearing Huw’s genuinely hurt response
Loads of us were spending time in a local pub that day, I had mentioned around 1.30 that I felt the Queen had died (due to the formalities that had started to take place around us). We had even mentioned it will either be 6pm new or 8am the next morning.
Soon enough it had got to 6.30 and all of a sudden the national anthem took over the entire buildings PA and TVs. We were still shocked that somebody we have known our entire life had passed away.
How do you nail it?
She's dead.....How's that nailed
I had to go and double check that she had in fact passed away. I stopped trusting the BBC some years ago now.
To be honest, when I heard that the royals were rushing to Balmorral, I knew she had died already or was about to.
This always happens when a member of family is close to death, the entire family is notified and instructed to hurry so they can be with their loved one in their final moments.
I think she must have gone down hill a lot quicker than either the Royal Family or any of the officials and medical staff expected as only Charles and Ann made it in time
@@leeroberts1192 Im still wondering what the heck happened.. I mean I know she was at a very advanced age.. But she had just done the thing with the new PM less than 48 hours previous, and she looked in decent health then. My grandpa was about the same age when he passed.. And it was a terrible long drawn out process of around a week and a half in hospice, just lying in bed. Very gradual. Her Majesty seems to have gone from walking around, to gone in very short order. While sad, it's better than lingering I suppose.
Well that happens with any family doesn't it sherlock. If you hadn't realised, you will not get news live. It's always after events. There's always a time delay.
@@blackhawks81H She most likely suffered a heart attack earlier in the morning, probably right after she woke up, since she always had doctors around her, they immediately rushed to her help, saving her in the immediate time, but there was nothing they could do to save her, she was 96 and she probably fell into a coma.
They immediately called the family and told them to rush because they knew for a fact she didn't have much time left, and as we now know, only Charles, Camilla and Anne managed to arrive on time; William was on the road, and Harry was still in the plane.
Seeing how she was alive, bright and energetic less than 48 hours prior to her day makes it impossible that her health suddenly and naturally degraded to that extent, if not for a sudden event, like a heart attack, or maybe a bad fall.
@@blackhawks81H my grandmother was in her early 80s when she passed - she had cancer for a number of years, but she was still able to get out of bed every day right until her death.
Infact, she was knitting the night before she passed. - I was completely at peace when she did pass, the grieving had already taken place as I spent a lot of time with her during her illness.

The only hints we had of her health were from the less engagements, the very limited appearances at the Jubilee, and the amount of events she didn't attend in the last couple of weeks. -
The body deteriorated slowly.. and then extremely rapidly, but the brain was still consistently very active... and it can be very difficult for us to assess someone's health accurately.

When the CBBC handles the announcement better than ITV and Channel 5, you know those two organizations are gonna hear about it from on high.

Nashville, TN, USA here. Offhandedly checked CNN's website for the first time that day and heard they were calling the family over to Balmoral, even Harry. I immediately thought, "Well, that's not good." But I wasn't expecting her to pass so quickly, thought she had a few days. After all, she just made that public appearance with Liz Truss earlier in the week--looked a bit off, using a cane, but smiling and halfway mobile. An absolute shock, her being 96 notwithstanding.
The BBC had cancelled all programs for six hours prior, so we knew something bad was about to happen as they'd never call off all shows for someone feeling unwell.
The Beeb also knew of her death long before it was announced, like all the presenters had switched over to wearing black during a segment, and Nicholas Witchell, the BBC's royal reporter kept refering to the Queen in past-tense.

Texan here, my colleagues found out about the Queens passing around 1 pm our time, I vaguely remember reading out her health declining that Monday of the week but man I didnt expect her to go. I just feel bad for the Royal families who didn't get to say goodbye one final time.

Oregonian here. The night before her passing, I heard she was getting medical attention but didn’t think it would be her final hours. She’s received medical attention before but she would always return to her normal life. So to hear about her passing the next morning was very shocking.
Right? It was both not surprising...and a sad shock. The fact that she greeted the new PM just 2 days before made it seem she was perhaps a bit frail, but doing okay. We should all be on our feet until the very last! She must have been ill when she made that final official meeting, but she certainly did not show it.
Tennessean here. Regardless of opinions I hold, this is still a loss. Loss of a mother, of a grandmother, a wife, a staple of the Monarchy. I hope the royal family is able to grieve together and share in the memories they all have together. The loss of such a centerstone in history deserves to be etched in time.
No one expected her to go. She had endured through so many life-threatening circumstances that people even began to joke about her being immortal. She didnt give up on life through the countless issues it threw at her.
I was watching the BBC feed live as it happened and as soon as I saw the flags at 0:15, I let out a gasp and put 2 + 2 together before they said anything of her passing.
I'd zoned out entirely earlier on and zoned back in when I noticed the flag at half mast.
I was watching it and saying to my Dad is that the flag being put at half-mast and he didn't think so but then obviously they announced it, and even though I was expecting to hear it around that point, we were both visibly shocked.
Similarly we live over the road from a betting shop and they immediately closed. I asked if he knew if they normally shut that early and take the signs down and he wasn't sure but then the next day came and it didn't open back up.
I had a similar situation. I am from the US and currently live in the EU, but I am a huge fan of the royal family and am fascinated by the history of it. When we heard the news that she was under medical supervision, I actually texted some of my friends that I thought that meant she would pass away within the day. I may be wrong, but I thought so because it was a statement from the palace which didn’t go into recovery or anything like that but one of seriousness. I wasn’t alive back with King George VI, but I seem to remember that he was terminally ill and yet the public wasn’t necessarily told that… It just seemed that the statement was likely pointing that she was likely going to pass…
My mother, who was a physician, actually hypothesized when I called her, that she may already have been gone before it was officially announced and that they were waiting for the family to arrive. Obviously I don’t know whether that’s true or not…
@@simsandsurgery1 I am sure she died much earlier in the day, probaly around 1pm. They would not recall all the senior members of the Royal Family for nothing. Also, the presenters were wearing black long before the offical anouncement.
@@paulneedham9885 They confirmed the death was at 16:30 and announced at 18:30.
It’s been 8 days and it’s still extremely unbelievable, she was getting old so it was bound to happen, arguably the most well known person in the world. Rip, your majesty the queen, you will be remembered for centuries to come. The longest monarch in British history, and the second longest in the world. A truly gem of a human being and a gift from god. Never thought this day would ever come, but here we are. She will always live on in our hearts.
As sad as these news are, it is inspiring to see the way that they were announced. As in they prove how much she meant to the British.
She was everybody's queen
Hew Edwards, you are amazing. We were watching the BBC news report as soon as the statement from Buckingham Palace was released saying she was unwell and doctors were concerned. He has always been so well spoken, and respectful as well.
I hate to be this guy, but it's Huw.
Two weeks later and it still feels surreal.
Huw Edwards is such an icon on reporting these type of news that the moment he appeared with a black tie most of us knew it's happened.
We said the same thing, as soon as they were dressed in black we knew she'd likely already passed despite it being a couple of hours before the announcement.
My Heart sank and hairs stood up when I saw this on the TV… It was so unexpected despite us knowing it was going to eventually happen.
Rest In Peace to her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. Rest well.
I was watching BBC One at the time. I'll remember Huw's announcement for the rest of my life. RIP your majesty
I like how you can hear each reporter take a deep breath before they make the announcement. They know the weight of the words they were about to say.
I was on the phone talking with my mom about Queen Elizabeth’s health, when I refreshed BBC and saw the official announcement of her death. Prayers to all in the United Kingdom who have lost a great monarch and role model.
I’m so sorry dear I wasn’t listening when you prayed what was it you wanted?

Imagine being the one to give that news to millions of viewers. Those newsreaders did well to hold it together.
Thanks for including CBBC
To have all these clips in one place is a really useful historical document. Thanks.
I physically can’t watch Hugh Edwards say those words again, it strikes a deep chord one of shock and fear. Scenes beforehand showed the Union Flag at an awkward angle, I could not tell if it was at half mast or if it was the angle. Hugh Edwards silence told me all I needed to know
I can’t without tearing up. Because they had said the broadcast would start at 6 and it was gone half past without any more news, I thought it must’ve just been a health scare and she would be ok so I’d kinda phased out until it suddenly cut back to Huw.
I just ended up sat there shouting no at my tv and then crying uncontrollably for at least the next 10 minutes. I can’t really explain why, I was obviously a fan of Her Majesty but I wouldn’t have expected her passing to hurt as much as it did.
I don’t think I’ll ever forget those words
When he said, "or that indeed, there is nothing more they can do to help Her Majesty," I think that was indicative of his announcement to come. Plus the silenced that followed.
I get the impression that once they had the shot of the flag on the mast, the news had broken and Huw Edwards was just waiting for the all-clear to make it official. To me the flag is clearly at half-mast, but I wasn't watching it live, just the recording, so I have the benefit of knowing what's happened.
Huw Edwards is incredibly good at what he does, though, isn't he? Poise and refined dignity matched with clear and level speech. The job he was born for.
@@N.I.R.A.T.I.A.S. I have to believe with the way suddenly everyone was returning and how they dressed in black several hours before it was official, most likely she had passed during the night. They knew it was just a matter of Buckingham Palace giving the go-ahead to officially announce it.
@@edlawn5481 but if the queen died overnight, why were the family members rushing at 4.30 the next day? The queen didn't die overnight - she probably died between 12.30 to 2.00 in the afternoon
Huw Edwards is the best to announce royal deaths. He is calm and sombre. The BBC handled it very well.
Huw? How do you even read that?

@ Z In the land where the town of Gomster is spelled Godmanchester it's perfectly possible!
Royals know how to mourn the death of a beloved one. The music is powerful and really encapsulates the moment.
As a young American I found her passing to be rather sad, it truly marks the end of an entire era, generation, people, and a witness to some of the most amazing events over the most drastic changing work in the last 100 years.
She seemed like a beautiful soul, for someone is such a position as her she carried it with grace and humbleness and her personality and actions reflected her values.
CBBC never fail to amaze me! The language and the delivery was perfect for children.
I was of course expecting the news all afternoon but I still felt physically shocked when the announcement was made
Children's BBC/Newsround has always handled news like this brilliantly because they know their audience are children (sometimes with their parents watching too).
The first I knew of something really bad was the BBC News website telling us the first statement from the Palace. I just thought hmmmmm, this is unusual. They never go that far with statements. So I WhatsApped my family with uh oh written under the article. It was just surreal. Then I turned Sky News on and watched it all day. I think I knew as soon as I saw the flag at half mast. They hadn't even announced her death yet. I think that was seconds later that Nicholas Owen said it. Ironically he'd been on ITV news when Diana died. I just broke down hearing the words. RIP Queen Elizabeth II
The flag over Buckingham is only ever lowered to half-mast when a royal family member dies, I believe. If you ever see it at half-mast… brace for bad news.
I was watching the BBC news channel live for updates about her health, presenters were already wearing black and there was just something about it all that made you know something had happened but they weren't able to talk about it yet. Then all of a sudden, it just changed instantly and they announced it. Feels so strange. Also props to the childrens channel for explaining it little ones too.
Regardless of how you feel about the Queen or the monarchy, it is interesting to see how this is being handled. Thanks for showing this.
A ridiculous display of superstitious nonsense and indoctrination, designed to maintain power structures and keep the plebs in their place.
You can see how the news readers are genuinely saddened and shaken. Truly sad for us all.
Did you not realise they were all dressed in black? They knew hours previously.
@@mathewfellows They have the suits on hand in the studio at all times just in case - and they were wearing them because they knew she had died. 'Doctors are worried' means she cannot be helped.

She is a royal worm food now
As many others have said CBBC handled it very well. The way they managed to explain it to children in a simple way that wasn't overly condescending. They gave the news, gave the facts and said how historic the event was; all they had to do.
Central Illinois here, I was working my day shift at Pizza Hut when I received the news, my best friend texted me and she said "The Queen passed away" and I was just so shook, I pulled up news article after news article on my phone, and sure enough, it spread like wildfire throughout my restaurant and every single one of my coworkers were just in a state of disbelief, my manager was even brought to tears nearly. Even outside of England, the Queen was beloved by so many, and her servitude to her country (Both before being crowned Queen, and after) will never be forgotten. May her majesty rest in peace, she's more than earned her rest.

@@HumansAreShitFactories Well no, it's not hard to believe that a 96 year old woman can die. It doesn't make it any less surprising/astonishing though, especially when it comes to a woman who for a lot of us, has been in a position of power for our entire lives. All of the jokes that the Queen was "Immortal" didn't just come out of nothing.
Thanks mate, was waiting for a video like this. I love breaking news that interrupts normal programming, it always fascinates me! Rest in peace queen Elizabeth the 2nd
I watched this live in my university library, played it loud in the library. Barely nobody but Chinese students were back so it didn’t matter much. Was absolutely shocked because at lunch we were told she was seriously ill then 6 hours later she was dead. Moved so quickly which is why people are so distraught. We had no time to mentally prepare ourselves.
In Australia, the Queen died when most of us were sleeping, which gave us a shocking sadness just after we woke up. I felt so bad that day since first glancing at my mobile phone in the morning.
@@fog- yes, but it wasnt announced until 6pm. in theory she could have died on the tuesday and no one would have actually known. we all knew it was going to happen. theres a reason she missed most of her birthday party and has only been seen with a stick and barely in public. the royal family did a bad job at hiding it tbh. its like when parents pretend everything is fine but you know somethings up

If you were expecting her death, as most of us were, you'd be watching BBC. Huw Edwards was superb, I can't fault in any way. There was a lot of delay built in so everyone knew what was happening and everyone could be prepared. By the language used we knew we were preparing for the sad death of Her Majesty. There were a lot of pauses in the announcements and to be fair there was a lot of concealed emotion.
I also noticed in the BBC's initial statement made about the Queen's health that the announcer spoke very deliberately, with pauses and appeared quite shocked so we were as prepared as you could be.
I agree that the CBBC announcement was really well done for children.

Genuine question, why do you care? I don’t feel like she really impacted people on a personal level given how reserved she was.

Interesting that CBBC even did this at all, from a foreign perspective! That and them referring to her as an HRH rather than HM.
I saw this and it's incorrect, her title since becoming Queen is HM (Her Majesty) Queen Elizabeth II, even in her death, her Royal title does not change. CBBC handled the news very well, but I am surprised that they made this error.

It's really good to see how well they broke the news for children. Even as an American, I don't think I'll forget sitting in the car with my 6 year old telling her the news and how she would probably read about that day in her school books in the future.
I woke up that morning and it was grey and dark and raining, the wind battering the windows. My mum told me and I turned on the news to see that outside Buckingham it was raining so hard that you could barely hear the reporter. I knew it would happen that day. After she passed there was a beautiful rainbow over Buckingham. England wept for her and celebrated her when she joined her darling Philip. RIP Ma'am❤️
Stunned at this abrupt delivery of the news
After several hours of no updates, I was disconcerted & upset by the transition from Nicholas Witchell's entirely reasonable "we hope for the best, but fear the worst" to Huw Edwards, just seconds later - with no "news just in" or newsflash forewarning - grimly informing us the Queen had died.
Mr. Edwards had rehearsed the announcement repeatedly and it showed - by jarring with the previous moments.
