Thanks for the video and pictures, brings backs memories for me, I went hiking there while stationed in the USAF at Lakenheath 1988. Got the greatest cloud picture of my life there with a Canon AE-1 film camera, with the cloud pushing over the ridgeline and caught the cloud right before if fell over the ridge. Wonderful place!
18.40 brings to mind Anselm Kiefer and Andre Tarkovsy. Great location, thank you. Beautiful image at 22.52 very much bringing to mind pathos for loss, like the war memorials one finds in the Croatian landscape.
Last week I bought my first digital camera after having shot exclusively on film for about five years. I thought I’d never go back, but something about having the flexibility with digital is quite freeing. I primarily use it as an every day carry for when I see compositions out and about during the day. I still shot film for my main photography projects, but the digital camera gives me the ability to take images without having to worry about buying film, developing, scanning and so on
Yeah, it's funny how certain tools fit us as different stages of our journey. I was digital for a long time, and then film breathed some energy and life back into my career around five years ago, and now digital is giving me a little bit of that feeling again. I still do love working with film though, and it's not going anywhere.

That image at 24.43 omg Wow that is so good its taking the mickey. So inspiring visit snowdonia yearly and you have absolutely rocked it so inspiring. Ps its snowdonia thats pretty good weather your having 😁😁😁😁
Awesome video! I bought the GFX100s last year and still cannot believe how amazing the images are when I get home and load up LR. Look forward to seeing more of your adventures this year!
I have had 100s for almost a year, and it is hardware to help you expand your imagination. I never thought that there could be such a difference in quality in photographic equipment. I repeat that the previous years were, in a sense, lost years for various systems that always required a compromise. Nowadays, I always feel confident about the quality and I always know that I can get a lot out of a photo by focusing often on details without losing quality.
I have the GFX 100s as well. Very, very impressive images from this camera. I have the 45-100mm and the 100-200mm lens. This camera is actually awesome. On the expensive side. I'm at over 10k U.S. with 2 lenses, but WOW!
Hi Kyle! I´ve discovered your channel and love it from minute 1, in fact you inspired me after more than a month no go out because my bones are destroyed due to a very painfully illness, but watching your work I decided to go out right now and shoot. Love BW, love simplicity and naturally you do the job man. Thanks.
Beautiful images Kyle, you found some classic British mountain weather and made it work! I would love to see a video of you talking about what brought you to that part of the world and how you research the locations you chose to visit. When you mentioned hearing about the shed with all the old equipment it sounded like the kind of knowledge you pick up chatting to locals down at the pub. It would be great to hear more background like this alongside the images. Really appreciate the hard work and passion that goes into your videos here.
Thanks, John! Definitely something that I'll keep in mind for another one of these future trip videos. For this area, I actually found out about that shed on an urban exploration forum.
I recently stumbled across your channels after investigating a Fuji GFX100ii, and I have to say, I am hooked mate. Your approach to photography is helping me rekindle my own fire that was sadly just smouldering to ash, but watching these vids, along with seeing your images on Insta has really started to stoke the passion once again. Keep up the amazing work and calming videos my friend. Being inspired from Down Under!
Totally agree with you about using film or digital depending on the project (and mood at the time!). Great images which capture the mood and atmosphere of the place really well. I remember rescuing someone off the Glyders up there in really poor weather many years ago. They were wondering around the mountain without any map or compass in the fog!
Thanks, Mark! Yeah, it was crazy up there. I had a compass and OS map of the area with me, and if I wasn't filming/shooting I probably would have kept going, but figured better safe than not. I wouldn't want to be unprepared up there in that type of weather!
Congratulations on the upgrade. Wish you were back in the US Desert Southwest. I’d love to see you work that camera on familiar ground! Mine arrived just before an October road trip. The images made with it got the attention of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. I’m going to give the Nostalgic Negative ‘Stephen Shore Mode’ at least half of the credit. Out of camera jpegs need only a few tonal tweaks to be print ready, while shooting raw + jpeg allows even more flexibility in post. BTW, a Canon 24 TSE-II adapts perfectly with full coverage. It even allows for some lens shift before vignetting. I used the combo for astro shots.
Thanks Tim! I miss that area as well and hope to get back there in the near future. Very cool to hear about the 24 as well! Probably a little wider than what I would need for most of my work, but I love the options that are opened up with adapting lenses. Hope you're well!
Another great video! Your attention to detail and effort put into your videos does not go unnoticed. For a one-man film crew, it's put together very nicely. I'm going to have to suck it up and start filming myself with the assistance of a tripod. That finished set at the end looks great together.
I zoned out completely from digital cameras after the era of the Canon EOD 5D Mk III - but it's always great watching your content, regardless of the camera you use :)
Cheers, Jahan. Yeah, it's been a while since I've shot this much digital, but I'm really enjoying this camera, and I'm starting to notice that film or digital, my images end up looking very similar after 'editing'. That being said, I'm still a sucker for the process that comes with film, and that'll be something that I don't think I could ever replace.
@@KyleMcDougall That's great though. It means your vision transcends the tool that you use and really makes your work stand out. Few people have the ability to make their style come through like this! Amazing!
Ive shot film almost exclusively for the past few years professionally. Previously I was shooting on a Hasselblad H5D 40 and honestly, I’m happier with this Fuji GFX 50SII I just picked up than I was with the Hasselblad. Being able to freely edit in Capture One and adapt my Hasselblad CFi lenses (and Hasselblad HC lenses) to this camera makes it so useful and flexible in my personal and professional work. It won’t replace my Hasselblad 503CW as I hand print the images in the darkroom and scan them in on a V850 to give me 16000x12800 pixel (approx) images which I love but it definitely holds it own for when that isn’t needed
Really interesting to hear that, Ryan. I've definitely been impressed with the Fuji system. I also won't be giving up film, but this 100s will get a lot of use. It's won me over.
I recently upgraded my digital set up from APS-C to full frame with an EOS 5DII, so I understand how you feel when it comes to using it alongside film. I still enjoy and in fact prefer shooting with film but I've recently been enjoying the benefits that come with using a digital with a full frame sensor - especially when you use an an adapter for older lenses as you said too.
Hey Kyle. The colors you are getting with your latest videos are great. Super rich and deep which fits the scene well. I'd be interested in learning more about the process of how you capture and create that.
Amazing locations, and you did pull some nice shots off. Nice to see you enjoy digital as well. I had come to think of you as strictly a film guy. I'm finding it healthy to shoot a little of both. You can get a breath of fresh air from one by shooting the other.
Thanks, Matthew! Definitely something that changes throughout a career. I was digital for a long time, and then film for the last five years. Now it'll be a bit of both. Gotta embrace what excites you!
Wish the sensor was closer to a true 6x7 sensor. Would be amazing to see the digital images that a sensor like that could produce. Lovely form factor even if its not that much bigger than full frame
Oh, so that's what you've been up to. Thanks for your perspective on that beast of a camera. I've been thinking about it a lot, too. I just wonder how it's doing on the technical side of things, e.g. in regards to dynamic range and high iso shooting. Been doing a lot of interior architecture lately and I wonder how the Fuji holds up in such an environment.
I just recently got the 50sii, and chose it over the 100 because I don’t need the video. Still shoot and love 4x5 film and a few pinhole cameras, but they are all just tools in the end. Use what works best at the moment.
I really like the Fuji’s, started with the X100s years ago. Since then others have been employed and the files are to my aesthetic brilliant. I really like the GFX100s but would not be liking the ding from all that Ca Ching. But you never know what’s next in the photographic journey. Im thinking that maybe the GFX50 would have a firmware upgrade for 4K at some point, I know my Xpro2 had the firmware upgrade from the initial 1080p . Always enjoy this channel, its very thoughtful and honest if you will. Cheers Kyle.
I appreciate that! And yeah, I was also wondering if they'd ever update the 50Sii with new video features. It is the original four year old sensor though, so maybe that has something to do with it?
I'm not sure how Baxter is going to feel about this digital fever. Personally I don't care anymore. So long as you enjoy yourself. Do whatever you like. I've been a long time Fuji shooter but I always felt pressured to buy into fuji and avoid other systems. Today I've ordered Sony a7iv after few months of shooting with rx100m7. I'm excited!
Nice! Grabbing one of these in the second half of this year. I just wish they had something a little more telephoto in the lens lineup. May just have to keep the X-T4 and 100-400 too hah
Awesome photography channel man- love your images and delivery. Have you thought of locking focus on your vlogging cam? The hunting for focus I find bothersome. Enjoying man!
Wonderful video Kyle, thanks for sharing. I visit North Wales at least once a year but haven’t been to the spots you shot in, so it was great inspiration. Do you have a link for the Benro tripod you are using in Snowdonia, and also to the archetype Ilford HP BW preset you are using? the images look fabulous in black-and-white.
Thanks Pete! Glad you enjoyed this one. If you google Archetype Process you'll see the presets. The Ilford one is from the B&W pack. Some other nice one's in there as well. As for the Benro tripod-it's about 15 years old now, so it's definitely been updated. Just a 3 stage carbon leg setup, with a ball head from Markins, called the Q10.
Great work, as usual. I'd be curios to know ( 11:00 ): What made you decide to bring a digital camera to this location instead of analogue ? Maybe a video about decision making on why digital over analogue or the oposite ? I am sure many of us following your work would appreciated it. Keep it up, cheers from Sweden. ( I can borrow a Contax645 for your videos)
Cheers, Alexis. Something I can definitely touch on in the future. As for the video equipment... I have a pretty standard kit that I bring with me everywhere. It usually doesn't impact the photography gear that I choose to use. Often I just end up bringing what I need and then suffering a bit because of weight, haha, but there's really no way around it.
I was in Snowdonia a few years ago, and climbed through Dinorwig Quarry, but never saw that saw house. Pity - it’s beautiful! I very much enjoyed the old hospital down below and the museum was interesting too! Just a fascinating place! Loved the black and whites - super photos! I saw you’re using Archetype. Are you happy with their profiles?
Cheers, Jason. Dinorwic is a huge place and it's definitely easy to miss things. As for the presets. I've only been using a couple of the B&W presets, but I've been happy with them so far!
I have the 50SII and have hankered for the 100S but really can't justify just for the bump in resolution (I don't use it for video). But I'm pretty happy with what I've been getting/making. This landscape is amazing. What time of year were you there?
Thank you. Great photos, awesome light and video. I was waiting for this video. Snowdonia looks like this in January/February? And you hike with the camera around your neck? I would be too scared as slipping may occur; but sure you want to have the camera ready :-). Cheers from Norway!
Thanks! Yeah, I've learned that Snowdonia can look many different way depending on the day you go. The first trip there was snow, this time just rain and crazy wind. As for the camera around my neck, yeah, part of it is because I just can't be bothered to keep taking it out of the bag and putting it back away. :)
Hey Kyle, I’ve recently found your channel and have been watching a lot of them. Catching up. I’m curious with your video background if you’ve shot video on the X-t4 or the gfx100s? If so, I’d love your thoughts compared to the blackmagic stuff. Great stuff and can’t wait to see the next video in the series.
Thanks, William. Alot of the videos on my channel are shot on the X-T4, including this one. The image out of that camera is excellent. I still prefer the Blackmagic cam for overall image quality (it's a little more robust and 'filmic'). But the X-T4 is definitely one of my favourite cameras that I've used for doing stuff like this. The image holds up really well being 10bit, and the colours are great. Not much messing around is needed to get a nice looking image.
Great video, Kyle. When you say you use the built-in Fuji presets such as Provia, do you mean the RAW ones that show up in Lightroom? Or are you simply using RAW+JPG?
Thanks Tim. No focus stacking for me. But I'm not often placing any elements in my frame that are really close, so I find I can get away with just using a smaller aperture and still keep everything in focus. It'd be different if I was doing some exaggerated compositions with things close to the lens.
I am perplexed by film shooters who have the attitude of “if you’re shooting film why would you ever shoot digital?” There’s room for each in my world. I happily shoot both, sometimes in the same day.
where are all these people getting the money to buy the GFX 100s, Sony A1, etc..., I am not even talking lenses and other necessary stuff, you guys must be making a fortune with photography. Good for you!!!
I know you hate the constant gear questions, but I was hoping if in a future video that you could go over the accessory equipment you’ve been using the past few months such as your tripod and tripod head, your backpack, any filters, battery chargers, etc etc etc. Also I’d really love to know the brand of pants that you were wearing in this video: they look so useful and utilitarian! Thanks!
Definitely something I can cover in a future vid! As for the pants, they’re from a company called ‘Revolution Race’. They have a ton of great outdoor clothing.
Hi Kyle - really enjoying your videos out in Snowdonia! I'm in the process of planning a wild camping trip to Scotland and will be taking my Olympus Om-1n with me along with a couple rolls of Colorplus (or perhaps some portra). It'll likely be very wet and I'll pretty much be living out of my bag for a few days - I was wondering if you had any recommendations for keeping the film and camera safe from water and generally operating a camera in those conditions? At the moment plastic bags are about as far as i've got haha. Thank you!
Hey Joscelyn, I'm probably the wrong person to ask for this! :) I say that because I often just have a camera slung under my jacket, or I just let it get wet if I need to shoot. I do have a nice waterproof backpack that I use to store it all, but other than that, the gear is just out in the elements and I cross my fingers that it's going to hold up. Hope you have a good trip to Snowdonia. It's amazing there!
Great vid Kyle! I’m currently testing the 50s2 and wondered, apart from the af are there really any other discernible differences? Does the 16bit vs 14bit make much difference when editing? I don’t really need 100mb files and have my FF for jobs that require faster af….thanks Chris
Hey Chris, I haven't used the 50s2, nor is AF important to me, so I can't comment directly on those comparisons. As for the 16bit vs 14, haven't done any direct testing, but I have been doing a lot of research and have come across a few conversations where people have been saying the difference would be minor, if anything at all in most scenarios. I'll be doing some comparisons of my own in the future, but I'd be shocked if there was a noticeable difference in most scenes between the two.
Thanks for all these videos… nowadays 50s is £1600 and 50s ii is £600 extra. Really curious if IBIS is important and worth such a big % of a body on second hand market…
Kyle, have you ever thought about trying out a Sigma sd Quattro for this kind of work? I could see the SDF mode and it's amazing Monochrome rendering and weather-sealing really shining for this kind of work. Not saying it's a replacement for what you need the GFX to do, but for $700 it might be worth it for exploring this type of landscape work.
Beautiful images and video, going to france to shoot with the 100s next week. Im curious, you said the fuji presets were "built into the camera and editing software", which editing software are you talking about and how do I make these presets available?
Hey Kyle, I looked it up and it is, although in Welsh its name is 'Twll Du' or 'Black Hole'. It's called 'The Devil's Kitchen' due to the 'steam' (or blown back water spray) that can be seen rising from it on occasions. Fabulous photographs Kyle and as always the video is inspirational.
For sure. Very different subject matter and light over here in the UK. Plus growing as a photographer and being influenced by new things. I don't think light and airy would work with B&W and these types of scenes. :) It's great for the desert work though.
Were any of the Broll shot with the 100s? Would love to hear your thoughts for it as a video camera. I too am in the same boat as you as a hybrid shooter.
Hi Kyle, enjoy your content! Waiting anxiously for my 50Sll from the camera store in Calgary. I ordered a small rig L bracket for it ,you may want to check it out for your 100 it’s very low profile?
Does shooting stopped down so much cause a loss of resolution? I’ve always heard to avoid high F stops due to diffraction but maybe it’s different with medium format.
A larger sensor does help with diffraction in two ways. First, for a given field of view, a camera with a larger sensor uses a lens with a longer focal length. (E.g. an APSC 18mm lens has roughly the same field of view as a 34mm Fuji MF lens.) The f-number is the ratio of the focal length to the diameter of the lens pupil, so for a given f-number, a longer focal length means a larger pupil and therefore less diffraction. Second, the effect of diffraction is independent of the sensor size, so the larger the sensor, the smaller the effect is relative to the final image.
Thanks for this. I'd also say what's important is basing your decision off of the scene and situation. For example, would you rather stop down and suffer from a bit of diffraction but have everything in focus? Or would you rather have a little bit better sharpness but have something fall out of the focus range.
These images are absolutely breathtaking, black and white landscape photography is so fascinating and especially the way you shot them.
I appreciate that, Wilson. Thank you!

Thanks for watching, Andrea!
Thanks for this. Would be really interested in a video on how the 35mm CY lenses work when adapted, too!
Cheers, Stephen. Coming up in a future vid for sure.
The 100s has a very current sensor, so I'd imagine dynamic range and ISO performance in situations like that would be great!
I just recently got the 50sii, and chose it over the 100 because I don’t need the video. Still shoot and love 4x5 film and a few pinhole cameras, but they are all just tools in the end. Use what works best at the moment.
Nice. Yeah, like I said, I would have gone for the 50sii if not for the video on this camera. And yeah, agreed, use what works best for you.
Great video as always!!!
Thank you!
nice photos nice video a very pleasant experience overall.
Glad you enjoyed it
I really like the Fuji’s, started with the X100s years ago.
Awesome 🤩
Thx for the content. Very relaxing to the mind
You're welcome.
Totally have to roll with whatever excites you! And that'll change a lot throughout a career.
Nice! Grabbing one of these in the second half of this year. I just wish they had something a little more telephoto in the lens lineup. May just have to keep the X-T4 and 100-400 too hah
I'm sure you'll love it, Jarred!
I really really enjoy these videos! You put in so much effort and passion into your photography and it shows! Please keep it up :) you’re great
Thanks, Blake. Appreciate you watching!
something i really would like to see on the x series from the gfx is the image size, 5:4 ecc.
Yes, agreed.
Awesome photography channel man- love your images and delivery. Have you thought of locking focus on your vlogging cam? The hunting for focus I find bothersome. Enjoying man!
Thanks, Glenn! Yeah, for sure. It's usually pretty good, but sometimes it just skips my mind. Especially in crazy conditions! :)
Great video. I was wondering if you have tried to scan some of your negatives with the 100s?
Just started to. Going to do a video about it in the near future.
Ever considered the Kipon focal reducer? For mounting pentax 67 lenses on gfx, adds extra stop of light and shallower DOF.
I have, but don't think I'll invest in it at the moment.
hi Kyle, another great video! Mind if I ask which luts you used to give this video this cinematic look? Really loving it.
Hey Jimmy! I’m using a conversion lut for the Fuji and then a couple look outside from ‘Lutify’ at a very low intensity.
@@KyleMcDougall Thank you Kyle for the clarification!
Just saw the auto correct. That was meant to say ‘couple look LUTs’. Also the conversion lut is called Fuji Rec709 Natural. Cheers.
@@KyleMcDougall thanks for the quick reply and info.
23:00 my fav, the yellow/blue and light in general is perfect, pretty interesting subjects like what are these slabs for lol
Great video! Makes me want one even more! Which film camera would you have taken if you didn't take that gfx 100s with you?
Thanks, John. Most likely would have brought my Bronica ETRSi and some HP5.
Also, a semi-related question: How much bringing vloging equipment affects your decision on which photo equipment to bring on a photo hike ?
Cheers, Alexis. Something I can definitely touch on in the future. As for the video equipment... I have a pretty standard kit that I bring with me everywhere. It usually doesn't impact the photography gear that I choose to use. Often I just end up bringing what I need and then suffering a bit because of weight, haha, but there's really no way around it.
The image at 22:40 with the Nostalgic Negative. Man. So beatiful. Slight bloom so the 1/8 filter in the mix too?
Yep you got it. The ones that show up in the profile tab in LR.
Great content, I’ve been in this area a few times and I never seen weather like this, I guess I was just lucky :P
Yeah, this was definitely a wild few days!
Great video. Really chill. Hey Kyle what bag is that ?
Thank you, John. It's the Compagnon Element. Did a video a little while ago on the channel about it. Great bag for environments like this.
Beautiful images! Out of interest, which Revolution Race trousers are those?
Thanks! These are the GP PRO Rescue trousers in Olive.
Thanks Kyle. Yours looks brown in the video and couldn’t see similar. Might be the colour grading on the video. Trousers look great though!
Fabulous images. Do you focus stack much/at all with the digital medium format or just go with the shallow depth of field?
Definitely room for both. To me it would be impossible to just pick on tool and stick with that for the rest of my career.
where are all these people getting the money to buy the GFX 100s, Sony A1, etc..., I am not even talking lenses and other necessary stuff, you guys must be making a fortune with photography.
Wonderful piece of kit, a little out of my range at $10,000 though :)
Thank you!
Check e.g. the waterproof bags from Aquapac. Those are padded too. I got one for my large SLR a while ago and it also fits a Hasselblad 500.
Please try this with the Pentax 645 120mm F4 macro lens for film scanning.
The exact lens that I have here for it. Video coming in a bit.
I recommend the Jetboil system for boiling water in the field 😊
I've had my eye on it!
Where can I get the black and white preset? It is amazing!
The convenience of a digital camera, what you spend on a single roll of film can be lunch for a long day of hiking.
A very nice lunch!
Never have, no. Quite happy with this camera, but I've heard some good things about those Sigmas!
Beautiful images and video, going to france to shoot with the 100s next week. Im curious, you said the fuji presets were "built into the camera and editing software", which editing software are you talking about and how do I make these presets available?
Cheers. They're available in both Capture One and Lightroom, under the profile tab.
@@KyleMcDougall thank you so mich for replying! Is that with capture one pro or only for the fuji version of capture one?
Nice video! What Marmot jacket is this?
Hey man, can't remember the model anymore. It's a few years old!
Hi Kyle, if my memory serves me correctly the waterfall you were shooting in the Glyders is called 'The Devil's Kitchen'.
Hey Steve, the area/path beside it I know is called the Devils Kitchen. The waterfall very well could be as well.
Oh, very cool. Thanks for the details! 🙂
It's interesting to me that when you shoot film it's light and airy but your digital images are very contrast.
Not right or wrong, just different.
For sure. Very different subject matter and light over here in the UK. Plus growing as a photographer and being influenced by new things. I don't think light and airy would work with B&W and these types of scenes. :) It's great for the desert work though.
Just asking out of curiosity, but have not thought of buying a thermos flask? 😆 Fair play for being out on GlyderFach on a day like that!
Lol! I have. The stove is more fun though, right?!
@@KyleMcDougall You know what, it is. 👍 plus the sound it makes adds to the atmosphere in the video.
Were any of the Broll shot with the 100s? Would love to hear your thoughts for it as a video camera. I too am in the same boat as you as a hybrid shooter.
A couple of the shots were, yes. Hoping to shoot a small project with this shortly and do a video about it.
@@KyleMcDougall perfect. That’s awesome. I got to get my hands on one. Wanna see how it does with the Contax Ziess CY line of lenses.
Hi Kyle would you do a print of the image at 8:33? It’s amazing.
Thank you. I would. You can email me at info@kylemcdougallphoto.com
Hi Kyle, which quarry is this?. I'm planning a visit to Snowdonia later this year and would love to visit.
Dinorwic
@@KyleMcDougall That’s great, thank you!
Hi Kyle, enjoy your content! Waiting anxiously for my 50Sll from the camera store in Calgary. I ordered a small rig L bracket for it ,you may want to check it out for your 100 it’s very low profile?
How do the corners of the handheld image look? I've heard that the centre may be sharp but the corners may soften a bit
Didn't notice any softness.
