    Always enjoy your videos Kyle! There's no ego, no "this is the only way" or stuff like that... I think that's what draws so many to the channel. Consistently good content, but it's down to earth and practical. Thanks man!!

    I often find focusing on another medium helps to both give me a break and keep that creative momentum up when I'm experiencing burnout with my photography. Sometimes putting down the camera and picking up a pen allows you to see things in a whole new way.

    • @KyleMcDougall

      Absolutely. It's important to take a break, and also just to make sure you have other creative pursuits to keep you busy at times as a change of pace.

    You slogging through inhospitable weather: inspiring… and maintaining your vision for Slate City.
    Using a TLR in the rain: do I “need” an umbrella hat?. So dorky!
    Your dedication is humbling. Ansel Adams’ quote: thx. Ditto that 95:5 rule.

    I completely agree with everything. Any time I get stuck in a creative rut, I try to push myself to do something different. In reality it doesn't always work but does get me out shooting again and then I get that one singular image that sparks joy and reinvigorates me again. I'm known among my friends for not being "the guy who shoots X" and not sticking to any one thing, so I don't have the problem of feeling tied to a particular bit of subject matter. Instead I have the opposite problem where I find myself feeling like I'm overdoing something if I stick with it for too long. Great video as always!

    I use to practice portrait photography, I did so for eight years and in those eight years I photographed a lot of faces, recieved a lot of criticism I wasn't ready to accept this was because back then in my youth I was egotistical. I never really listened to anyone and then It became apparent that I was burnt out of my wits. So I went on a seven year hiatus, and it was only this year that my love for photography reemerged. All the skills I thought I had now seem irrelevant, watching your videos helped put things into perspective and I thank you for that. I've been relearning photography with an open mind and I love it.

    Honest opinion and only saying this hoping it will help, I belive that the video footage looked better than the B&W photos.
    The mood, the atmospheric and also the faded colors were something really special.

    Kyle, I have been following you for a while now, and I think this is some of your best work. Your "realities" are so common sense yet they seem to get lost in the noise. I have to say, one of your implicit or maybe understated lessons of the last few videos is to use the tools that best position you to succeed. (I'm talking now about the digital camera - I can't even imagine changing film in those conditions!). Best wishes on your journey and keep bringing us along for the ride. ps. from my own experience, life is easier in Canada, come back home one day. :)

    I find inspiration sometimes moves from one medium to another. I often use music or painting as a way to inspire and break from photography ...and vice versa. The balance varies throughout the year (or years), but the creative spirit is always there.

    Good points in your video. To avoid loosing interest, I change my style of photography frequently: shooting panoramas for a while, then doing half frame image stories, then pinhole photography, then shooting only Holga cameras for a while and so on. That way I always feel I’m doing new and exciting.

    You mentioned something really important, first I finally heard on watching RUclips videos on photography. That is, about making videos to please yourself and not making them to please an audience. That is an extremely important point. Other photographers give you the impression you job is to please your audience. I recently took a photo of birches in fog. To me it was one of my best ever photos. I posted on Facebook. The viewer, a family member, commented about being tired of not seeing the sun for a long time. Fortunately, I don’t feel the need to be praised by someone ignorant of photography. Anyway, first time I saw videos by you but I will keep looking for me. Interesting, and well done!

    Another great film Kyle, thank you. I’ve experienced all of these things at various times and a few years on (photography is my second career) I’m only just learning the part about being true to myself. I’ve tried to over-think my subject matter and style/voice numerous times and it’s become obvious (sometimes after only a day doing the work 😂) that it just isn’t ‘right’. I’m now more settled in creating a body of work that I enjoy (and which ironically has been under my nose for 2 years while I was thinking of other stuff to do). I’ve also gained quite a bit by simplifying my kit and swapping out my main digital camera for an older, less advanced model but which I enjoy using more. And I too switch between that and film. Cheers Kyle, keep it up 👍🙏

    • @KyleMcDougall
      @KyleMcDougall  2 года назад +2

      Cheers, Ben. Glad to hear that things are becoming clear for you. It definitely takes time. I spent the last two years (basically ever since I moved to the UK) back in the discovery phase. Trying to find out what I wanted to create. And that brought with it a bunch of failure, trying to force things from my previous work. It's all about experimenting, and pushing forward, and eventually things start to reveal themselves. There's no shortcuts.

    `That's the reality of being a creative,' beautifully said Kyle. So, is it worth it? When the arid times come we can take a break and take stock of what it is that motivates us. Hence a break can be a very positive thing. It might be that photography has served its purpose and its time to move on and that's O.K. Life's a journey. It might be the motivation is still there but inspiration is missing. Like, the thing itself is still good but it's not giving me good feelings anymore. What's happened? I think there's a lesson here. Is being creative going to bring world peace? No, of course not. O.K then; is the creative process still worth it? If the answer is yes, then keep going. Your motivation is now more pure than it was before and you will be the stronger for it.

    • @KyleMcDougall
      @KyleMcDougall  2 года назад +1

      Cheers, Tony. For me, it's absolutely worth it. Often, photography is almost just a vehicle for experience, connection, and introspection. And of course, our relationship with a creative pursuit will have its ebbs and flows. It'll be different for all of us. :)

      Thanks, Bernie. As for the 35-70, absolutely. I bought it as it's nice and compact which is great for hiking, and then the range of it is perfect for what I do. I'm also not after a fast lens for most of the work that I do. Optically I've found it to be great so far. I do have the 32-64 here on loan from MPB, which I'll be reviewing and comparing soon. I love landscape and travel and will surely spend most of my free time doing that but in trying to make a career it feels like it's necessary to do other things like portraits or event shoots. Maybe it's better to work a day job and build up a better portfolio of the shots you're really passionate about first? edit: meant to say the photos you took in this video are so amazing, super inspiring to create such good work out of crappy weather.
