In this video I’m out in Dartmoor National Park in England, exploring and creating some images with the Fujifilm GFX100s. Over the course of two days, I experience everything that usually makes up a road trip, including a first day that was full of challenges and zero image-making, followed up by a second day that was the complete opposite. I also take some time to reflect on a few important lessons that I’ve learned after living and shooting here in England for the past two years.

as always thanks for letting us be part of your trip. I really enjoyed watching this...
Glad you enjoyed. 🙏
Being UK based I find myself leaning towards B&W. There is so much green in this country, it's beautiful with my eyes but I struggle with with processing images. For example, Portra looks so good in the American West with all the desert and blues skies but it doesn't translate here for me, at least not for countryside/landscapes. Another great vid!
I can relate for sure! The greens are what seem to be the biggest issue for me with colour work.
@@KyleMcDougall Fingers crossed for a green themed video when you crack it for us all 👍🏻😃
There certainly is a lot of green! I tend to desaturate the greens and yellows sometimes during processing so they don't dominate the scene.
greens are easily what I struggle with the most during processing!
That’s what i found pro 400h best for when it was more available, deeper not so washed out greens. Maybe ektar would work a bit better for you for the added saturation and contrast, although most likely you’ll be stuck on a tripod if you want a reasonable DOF
you're like a wandering guru, using photography as your meditation. good advice as always kyle
Cheers, Matt!
you’re one of my biggest inspirations man
Cheers, Liam!
Really enjoyed this one. All the images were fantastic as well!
Thanks Brae. I appreciate it!
Great video Kyle, I loved the filming and narration!
Cheers, Michael!
Very inspirational and human. Beyond the outstanding production, I think you are really building something better and better in terms of content, talking about photography and beyond. It is simply one of the best channel I've seen on RUclips, no matter what the topic.
I appreciate that, Arnaud. Glad to hear you're enjoying it. Little bit of a change with the channel this year. But trying to incorporate more of the creative journey. Probably not as wide of an appeal, but I feel like it's important stuff to talk about!
You should meet up with Thomas Heaton!
Omg i needed to listen to what you have said! Its hard to keep pushing when there is lack of ispiration and you just gave me some hope! Thank you Kyle
Glad you connected. Cheers.
Once you are out on Dartmoor in those mists, you can see why Arthur Conan Doyle set the Hound of the Baskervilles in that environment. It feels like there are beasts out there, and they could be stalking you.
Fantastic seeing my local Moor featuring in one of your videos Kyle. Beautiful stuff. Do take care using a drone, pretty sure it’s not permitted on Dartmoor.
Thanks Marc. It’s a beautiful area. Thanks for the heads up about the drone as well. I was unaware. Good to know for next time. 🙂
Your always on time with good advice. Thanks for making this video, Kyle.
Thanks, Rob!
Some really great points in this one Kyle! Love that last image! Man, what an amazingly photogenic area... what a playground!
Cheers, Wayne. It's a special area. Looking forward to going back!
The lessons are really relatable. I've had to stop giving myself a hard time over how long my projects are taking. I guess the key thing is not to give up when progress is slow.
I almost never comment on videos but your work is so inspiring and amazing! I love it. And the Bronze Radio Return music in the background doesn't hurt!
I really appreciate that. Thank you!
Another wonderful video, and great to see how the process can go good one day and not so good on the other.
Great message Kyle. Your videos always strike me as extremely authentic. Cheers, Tim
Thank you, Tim. 🙏
agree on that experimentation and being easy to yourself when trying out new things. recently did that and just been experimenting stuff and so far so good. another amazing video kyle!
Glad you enjoyed this one. Thanks, Jeric!
Been there too many times. Loved this video. It resonated. One thing I have been doing in these situations…. Get really close. I found it breaks my mind set and makes me look at a different perspective. Just me… but I found it helps.
Thanks for all the great videos. Super helpful!
Thanks Jason!
Great stuff Kyle, love the images and the way you frame up scenes. Found myself shooting more B&W recently, It's actually pretty refreshing.
That first image is fantastic! Looked like a fun trip on the whole, though, even if you didn't make much work you were all that happy about. It's still nice just being on the road and on the trail!
Thanks, Josiah. And absolutely, every trip is a good one, regardless of the outcome!
This is up the road from me which is mad, so beautiful!
Great pictures as always kyle! Always an inspiration seeing your work. 🔥
Thank you, Ray. 🙏
Really loved this episode Kyle! I, myself are really in a good patch right now with my photography, but it's really good to remind myself of that it's ups and downs. Bumps in the road and what not. Trying to really enjoy the ease of making images right now and experiment as much as possible. Love to see your videos, they always seems to talk to me.
Thank you Kyle!
/Robert
Thanks, Robert. Glad to hear that things are rolling with you! Those are the fun times, when you're in the flow.
my grandfather worked and lived in merrivale quarry and also shot astro there i love going there
Dartmoor! The place of Baskerville hound!
I actually liked the picture of the church a lot, as I did the last picture. Photography is very subjective.
That's always one of the things I enjoy-is hearing other peoples preferences for images. Definitely subjective!
Great to find this in the archive - and a quick Google Lens search helped my find the location of the disused building you found (at least I hope so!) - plan to visit in the future
I honestly really liked the church picture. But would have preferred it in colour! Looked kinda romantic with the shadow falling on the left and the hill(s)!
Keep up the great work!
Really enjoying the videos as always:)
Thanks for watching!
Man for me it’s always the places on the way. The best , these are so beautiful too! Jealous
Thank you, Nick! The experience is so important.
Ah, I know all of those places. Done a lot of hiking there. Don't know all of the names but nr sourton, north hessary and yes tor. It's a challenging place to take pictures of due to its bleakness and temperamental weather. I find but one of my favourites was a dawn shot taken on elite chrome at the same river you were on near yes tor.
Yeah, it's a beautiful place. Amazing environment, but definitely challenging from a photographic standpoint.
welcome to my neck of the woods
Brilliant video as always Kyle! Inspired me to head out to Dartmoor this spring to shoot more! Only an hour from me but never seem to stop and take it in with the camera in hand! That’ll change soon 😅
Cheers, Ryan! I'm looking forward to getting back there!
I liked thr chuch photograph...
seeing youre interpretation of where im from is great! ive taken that stock photo of the church too haha
😁 I feel like that’s the photography spot!
Dude, production levels through the roof. Drone shots too!? Do you carry a Fuji GFX, an XT4 and a Drone on your hikes? I'm impressed. PS - would love to see you visiting Scotland some day. Have a look at the book 'Wild Guide Scotland'.
Thanks for the book recommendation, just pre ordered the new one due in May.
@@jeg569 I have the first edition. It's fantastic (plus the photography is beautiful). Might pick up the new edition too!
Thanks! And yes, always carrying way too much gear. Hoping to get to Scotland soon!
Lovely images of Dartmoor which is almost local to me. Loved the corrugated building too, wonder what was inside, no entry access I suppose? Thanks for sharing.
Excellent as always! Have you considered doing a colloboration with Steve O'Nions? I'm sure you'd have a lot to talk about since you're both shooting a lot of landscapes in black and white ✌
Cheers, Christian! I do follow Steve’s work. Would be great to meet up.
Dartmoor is just up the road from me, I know 2 of the locations well, but the old metal quarry buildings have me stumped. Whereabouts is that please? Looks super interesting.
It was so long ago that I'm cant remember specifics. It was a bit of a random find while driving.
@@KyleMcDougall I've done a bit of research and I think it is called Merrivale quarry.
Could someone here tell me that I don't need GFX 50r please? I already have X-T3 which is more than enough for me. It's really hard to resist buying it watching this video, I'm looking for a support group here 😅
Buy it 😈
Do it.
Stay strong, do not give in to G.A.S. :)
You don’t need it. Check out the work of Allan Salas for inspiration. He uses an X100F. A broken one at that. Stick with your X-T3.
It would be a lot more enjoyable if you removed that thick frame and enlarged your photos. 95% of people watching these videos on a phone. They are nice but I can barely see your photos on my phone.
Thanks for the feedback.
Great video. We thought the church image at the was pretty damp good!,
Glad you enjoyed. 🙂
Really enjoy your videos! Which camera did you use in this video for filming? The BMPCC6K or the XT4?
Cheers! This one was the XT4 I believe.
Great video Kyle! Curious what your go to lens is for the GFX system?
Thanks Calum. It’s mostly been the 35-70 zoom. Great little lens.
Wonderful video, thank you for sharing what you learned man; I’m in early stages of a project and I needed to hear this.
Cheers, Sathya. Glad you connected with this one!
1:40 - You have seen American Werewolf in London, right?
I haven't!
@@KyleMcDougall good job, otherwise you would have probably terrified yourself filming the start of your edit here 😂
"Stay off the moors!" 😱
ruclips.net/video/W9GTRQjbUjY/видео.html
@@alanpods______8260 that's Yorkshire though. On Dartmoor it's the Hound of the Baskerville to look out for, not lycanthropes.
Did you shoot with the GF35-70mm? How do you like it? A keeper vs using primes for the kind of work you do? Thanks.
Yep, it’s been my go to lens. I’ve been very happy with it. Great performer and nice and compact.
Color grading is mint Kyle! Wow!
🙌
