Photography is often a long and winding journey, and even though photos can be created in a fraction of a second, it's usually the case that it takes a lot of work and time with a camera in hand to get to that point. In this video I go back to a spot in Snowdonia that I visited three years ago for a photo opportunity, and thanks to my stupidity, it's taken me until now to get a picture.

Worst nightmare happened to me recently. On shoot with a couple (just before their baby is born) took about 1000 photos. Saved on both cards. Got to my studio, started transfering the photos, crashed on photo #14. Went to see what happened, both SD cards were clean. No files whatsoever ... a single tear dropped down my face, then ... massive anger!
Had to reshoot the whole thing the following week... first time it happened to me in 10+ years of shooting every single week. Set both cards on fire. Bought new cards. They did the job fine.

Yeah, this is not SUCH a bad nightmare. You can usually find an SD card in any town. What's worse is a "no SD card" message when the SD card, full of your shots, IS in the camera. Just it's dead now, and you don't have a backup.

You should consider using a longer lens (70-200mm equivalent) for woodland. I saw at least 3 marvelous compositions in the first four minutes of this video that a longer lens would have captured brilliantly. They're great for isolating details, tree branch patterns, etc. in the woods. My last foliage shoot the other day, I used my long zoom almost exclusively. Anyway, congrats on the new house. I look forward to your upcoming Wales content.

Saw your title - and having just got back from a tramp/hike to Kapuni Lodge on Taranaki on which I'd discovered I had no SD card in my camera and nor did I have a spare stowed away somewhere even after taking great care to pack everything I needed the night before - I immediately thought, 'today it's no SD card in the camera!' And lo and behold, there you were - remedying a 'No SD card' from three years prior. Fortunately for me, I won't have to wait three years to get up to Kapuni Lodge again as it's a 40-minute drive from Te Hāwera to Te Rere o Kapuni followed by a 90-minute uphill trek.

That's assuming you're putting cards or batteries back in very soon. Leaving card or battery doors open increases the risk of them being snapped off.

    • @PiTdeLyX
      @PiTdeLyX 3 года назад

@@raksh9 There is absolutely no reason to ever leave the SD card out of the camera. Transfering the data is usually done in seconds and then its ejected and back in the camera.
Batteries take some time to charge, that's true - even more of a reason to not close these doors, you WILL have forgotten that battery by the time it is charged. Get a second one, switch through them with charging.
Also, while you empty your card and charge the battery you don't use that camera - put it somewhere safe.

Another nice video. And yes, I am curious to how you edited those photos. There's a certain look, been trying and trying, but can't seem to make it. Lift shadows AND the blacks? Seem to be something of lowering contrast in the darks too. And maybe darkening some specific colours, while increasing their satuaration? I know every photo is different, but I'm just curious to that 'general idea' you apply to 'most' images. Yes, I would like a video about that. Congrats with a new house btw. Cheers.

Hi James: You must be so happy to have such a diverse new area to explore. I have been to Snowdonia but unfortunately only for 1 day. It is certainly on my bucket list location. I will be in Patagonia in April 2022 so I hope that you create some new content of your trip for your channel so I will know what to look forward to. Keep Covid-19 during this next lock-down period . . . keep creating . . . and keep happy. Cheers, Keith Pinn (Barrie, Ontario Canada)

Create a checklist you run through each time you leave the door(for photography). Could be done digitally or just print up a whole bunch of em. Works a charm!

@@JamesPopsysPhoto Also makes me *less* likely to drop my entire memory card collection off a cliff/into a river/down a canyon. String will do the job, but I spend a few pounds and use cheap coiled kevlar lanyards. Given the cost of memory cards (even cheaper ones) it makes sense to me & it's already saved my bacon once...

Was curious, so Googled it. "Close to the disused 19th century, water-powered Machno Woollen Mill built in 1839, there is a drystone-built, packhorse bridge over the Machno river. This is known as the 'Roman Bridge' but it is actually 16th or 17th century. Penmachno is, however, near the section of the Sarn Helen Roman road from Betws-y-Coed to the Roman fort of Tomen y Mur."

Tony Northrup said buy dozens of cheap memory cards. Not top shelf, just knock offs. And stick them everywhere. In your backpack, in your wife's purse, in your VW trunk (boot, in your case), etc., etc. That way you should never find yourself without memory cards.

Happened to me in Germany in March. Over several days I'd been balancing the load out I was taking for walking around the city of Nuremberg. Trying to work out what I needed for casual photography with my X-T1 and still have bag capacity for gifts, snacks etc. Third day enjoying a tour and realised I left the SD card in my laptop from transferring photos the night before. Gutted. So I was faced with a 2 hour mess around going back to the hotel or just enjoy as much as I could and use the phone. I keep spare SD cards in my camera bag but I didn't bring that on this day. Lesson learnt. Luckily my X-T3 now has 2 card slots. So I always keep a 32gb UHS-II card in the 2nd slot that I don't really use. To cover that in future.

I would like to see this too, as well as how you focus stack the handheld shots. I am too lazy to carry a tripod, and have tried to stack images where I have focussed on various depths within the scene, but even though I attempt to keep the same view in screen the stacking has never turned out well!

While photographing the Golden Gate bridge more than 30 years ago from a cliff on the Sausalito side, I started to slide down. It was a 750-foot drop. I was wearing street shoes, and there was nothing but dirt on the way down, so I had no easy way to put on the brakes. There was a small rock sticking up, which I grabbed. I gingerly removed the Hasselblad from my neck, figuring I could come up with $3000 to replace it, but I couldn't replace me. Luckily, I was able to scramble back to safety (very carefully!). Trust me, there are worse things than getting out there without a card. BTW, wouldn't it be smart to carry a spare card in your pocket? Then It wouldn't matter whether or not the camera had dual slots.
