    I've owned a 58 for 3 years and it is my favorite dive watch of all time. I like it better than my Submariner. I tried on a 54 this year, it wears great and I love that clasp. But I don't love the contrast between the gilt dial and the monochromatic bezel. And no red triangle, either. So I am sticking with my 58. I also tried on a 41 - too tall for my tastes, very slab sided - not my cup of tea. Your Reddish Brown Simple Handmade Strap pairs perfectly with the 58 (@ 2:48 in your video), may have to get one of those. Cheers!

      The only lack of continuity with the Ranger bracelet, is that the side are brushed and not polished to match the BB case. But that's not noticeable. Neither are the presence or lack of faux rivets on the 58 bracelet. The clasp is the only benefit. Works well.

    This is my opinion for this very cool subject:
    I have a family heirloom Rolex 6538 but will never wear it in the wild. As a matter of fact it is in a safe in a vault. I bought 5-digit sub back in 05-06 and still love it to this day and will always be in my rotation, but I also wanted to wear something vintage but there was nothing out there until the first Blackbay back in I guess 2010s some time. In hopes it would feel like the 6538, I found it was not and did not wear like it. 2018 comes around and the BB58 arrives.
    The BB58 wears almost exactly the same as a Rolex 6538. The BB58 is 39mm x 11.9mm in height x 47mm lug to lug and a lug width of 20mm. The crown is 6-6.5mm. The Rolex 6538 is 38mm x 15.2mm in height due to the doomed x 47mm lug to lug and a lug width of 20mm. The crown is I believe 8mm last I checked.
    I tried the BB54 and it was an awesome watch! Love the fit and feel but also did not fit like a 6538 at all which makes sense because it is a nod to an older vintage but even then it is it’s own thing as the vintage it is based off from 1954 it is based off is larger lug to lug and thickness. So the BB54 does not wear like a vintage but it wears very different in a good way. For me I wanted something like the 6538 and the BB58 is my preferred. Specifically, the Gilt dial. Lastly the lume on the BB54 is not as good as the BB58.
    I think depending on which vintage you like most would determine which you prefer. Another option is simply owning both the BB58 and 54. For me I am waiting for 2028. I have a feeling they will make some refinements with the original BB58. They will make changes with the gnarling on the bezel and crown and may shrink it down to 38mm. Now that is a watch worth waiting for in my opinion. But no one would be wrong to own that nice BB54.

    The 54 is just simply a match made in heaven for me and my 6” wrist. The 37mm is just absolutely perfect and it just seems like it was just tailored for me to wear. 37mm - 38mm is my sweet spot when it comes to watches. The biggest I’ll go is 40mm, I can barely get away with without them looking like a dinner plate. I made the the right choice with the 54 and I just love it ❤

    It’s all based on your preference and wrist size / body size. I have a 7.25 inch wrist so the 54 looks ok on me, but I’m 190 cm high, so the watch looks very small. I went to 3 different ADs and tried it - my wife as well as 3 dealers told me it’s too small. Same with the 36 mm Explorer. 58 works best on majority of sizes, OG 41 is for people with bigger wrists and for those looking for bigger watches

  • @michaelriera6277
    @michaelriera6277 Месяц назад +15

    I tried the 54 and it’s definitely not too small on my 6.5 wrist. I think as a 1 watch collection the 54 is perfect. However, if you have a multiple watch collection, you may want something with a little more spicey because for all its goodness, the 54 is a very boring looking watch at least when compared to the 58. Unlike the 54, the 58 is not an exact replica of back catalog Tudor, it is its own thing. The gilted bezel adds a nice warmth and harmony with the gold on the dial, the red triangle harkens back to the Rolex/Tudor Big Crown and serves to break up the monotony of the watch. I also find the more refined coin edge bezel and matching crown very elegant. It is a very special watch that isn’t an exact replica.

    • @gian_zx1197
      @gian_zx1197 Месяц назад +2

      sorry to tell you bud (although this is not a downsize at all), but the 58 is a ''replica'' of 1958 submariners ref 6538; bb54 is a ''replica'' of 1954 submariners ref 6205...still i agree with the bb58 and it is the watch i've chosen too, it has more character, plus i think it's way more proportioned, the 54 feels a bit too squared, probably the 20mm lug should ve been at least 19mm, i don't know

    • @michaelriera6277
      @michaelriera6277 Месяц назад +2

      Oh no doubt it’s heavily influenced by the 1958, but it’s certainly not a watch from anything in Rolex’s current catalogue. I have a Sub date, an Explorer 36 and feel my BB58 compliments my collection very well and it’s different enough in wear and look. I really like my BB58.

      @@gian_zx1197it's a good night for us pedants - they are actually loosely based on the Tudor Oyster Prince Submariner references: 7922 and 7924 (both Mercedes hour hand) . There was also a hand winder (Tudor Oyster Submariner) with a normal pencil handset.
      Some of the features (like the colour of the marker on the bezel at 12 o'clock) and case size are period correct but the Snowflake hands didn't come in until the late 1960s - I think the first Tudors to have snowflakes also had square indexes so they were a distant relative of the Pelagos.

      @@gian_zx1197 - The view that Tudor spent their formative years riding around on the coat tails of their uncle knocking out homages to their most successful references is only sustainable if you view history through the rose tinted spectacles of hindsight where the Submariner was always bound to be the icon that it is today. If the 1950s subs had sold in the millions then we'd be able to pick them up for a fiver down the market any day of the week. So, producing a homage to something that was not a particularly big seller any was only produced in that form for about a year seems a bit strange. However, there is actually a more sustainable argument that, the Sub would never have made it on to the wrist of Mr Bond and into the public imagination were it not for the contribution of their Cinderella sister.
      It's a bit too much effort to spell out this thesis but, if you think of these two things, you might be able to get there for yourself:
      1) Who really bought subs in the 1950s?
      2) [seemingly irrelevant but very pertinent] - is the Peugeot 108 a homage to the Toyota Aygo, or are they both just based on the Citroen C3?
      Anyway, it might turn out that, the two Tudor Oyster Prince Submariner references, might be more important to the success story of the Rolex Submariner than you think.

    For the sake of pedantry alone, the 41mm Black Bay is not the same as the Black Bay 41 but it is interesting that none of these mainstream divers make any reference in the name to the diameter.
    I'm not a big diver fan (in more than one sense of the word "big") - I don't hate divers, It's just that I've never owned one and, as I have a smaller wrist, I tend to gravitate towards smaller watches. I was recently out shopping for a Black Bay 36 and, whilst I was looking, I had chance to look at some of the other Tudor watches including the 54 and the 58 (I didn't bother looking at the Black Bay). Before I'd seen them in the flesh I would have considered the 54 to be a no brainer but, even on my 6 1/2 inch wrist, and, even compared to a BB36, the 54 felt small and, much to my surprise, I preferred the 58.
    I think that the bezel on any dive watch automatically takes a millimetre or two off the perceived size of the case compared to a watch with a narrower or smooth bezel.
    Similarly I also looked at the Black Bay Pro. Although the pro is famously chunky, in terms of lug length and case diameter it seemed to be similar to the Ranger, but, to my mind the Ranger looked bigger on the wrist than the BB Pro (although this time around I only looked at the BB Pro, I didn't think to compare them side by side ).
    The other smallish diver style watch that I'm curious about is the Oris Diver 65 Bronze. I think the diameter is similar to the BB 54, so, it would be interesting to see how that wears compared to the BB54

    I like the 54. But I prefer many design aspects of the 58 more. The finer coin edging of the crown and bezel play with light better and look more refined. The red triangle 🔺️ has that subtle splash. The gilting on the dial matches the gitled bezel (the 54 clashes and looks less cohesive. Pick one, don't do both). And I don't like the lollipop seconds hand as much.
    The 54 looks too cold, mostly due to the lifeless bezel. The 58 has perfect balanced wamrth. The faux patina is also NOT overdone. It's not fully 'pumpkin orange' like some Heritage Omegas. It's just a little bit creamy and off-white, which happens to blend well with the rose gold handset. The whole theme is tied in together perfectly
    As a 58 owner for two years now, the 54 left me envious of nothing. Sure, I'd take the clasp, even though I don't personally need its features.
