I have never before looked at the Black Bay collection from an owners perspective and never considered owning one myself (preferred the Pelagos as a property) So I purchased the BB54 on a whim with an idea that this watch felt like the definitive answer but unsure whether it would be able to sway my opinion. Safe to say it has been one of the biggest surprises I’ve ever had. Refinement, refinement & refinement. Enjoy the clip!
@@Destijl86 We're never satisfied until we are 😉 Makes one helluva difference. Maybe it does lose some of the "Black Bay charm" in the process, but a flush fitting crow is just 🔥
@@ksolan13 Great point. I've owned a few vintage watches over the years (experienced many, many gems - like 4 digit Daytona's, early submariners, all the Speedmasters, zodiacs, you name it) Been very fortunate. For me personally, the huge bump in price for an old watch that does not have the same level of engineering and improvements in all areas (like movements, bracelets, clasps, crystals and lume) it doesn't feel sensible. It's not mentioned enough how fragile a vintage watch can be at the exact wrong moment. Clapping your hand too hard and having aged Tritium lume falling out of hands or plots. Radium in large amounts genuinely being health hazardous (where you're recommended to only wear the watch for 300 hours a year) The movements can be temperamental with newer replacement parts, the WR can be a nightmare. Living in a humid climate and the crystal fogs up randomly. Bracelets losing their tightness... I could go on for hours 😆 I LOVE original designs and could own a 4 digit Daytona or classic Heuer because of how beautiful they are but then, knowing the price of the watch on wrist and not having full confidence that it'll hold up as well as a modern watch... always bugs me. If a brand can give us that level of 1:1 accuracy with bulletproof movements (silicon etc) while still evoking that charm of vintage without the worry, I'm all for it. Definitely not a popular opinion. I've just seen and learnt about the many issues that plague vintage and their owners that's not often shared. Don't get me started with repair costs 😂
It was my pleasure to sell it to you buddy 😉 I hope you enjoy this lovely watch as much as I did, briefly 😅 Lovely video! You captured what we discussed and so much more! You really did it justice. Tudor should be paying you for the glowing review!
Cannot thank you enough for letting me have the opportunity (I know competition was fierce) 😉 Maybe, just maybe a clip like this will have Tudor reach out... a guy can dream 😆🥃
This video is pure poetry! How do you get to the essence of the matter so perfectly and without a word wasted? I love your emphasis on design intent, often overlooked in favor of discussing specs. You’re a treasure for the Watch community!
Thank you Teej! Love trying to bring design forward and making it the subject of the conversation and at the end of the day I'm going to credit it all to luck. Just lots and lots of luck 😉 Really appreciate the kind words, brother. Thank you! 🥃
I watched this post more than a couple of times before buying the BB54 and I have continued to watch it having bought the watch. This review is such a true and comprehensive commentary of the watch.
Congratulations on the purchase, this piece looks like it has ticked all the right boxes I think Tudor has carefully listened to constructive criticism over the past ten years and it shows I must say the footprint looks absolutely superb on your wrist. Once again congrats brother🥃
How Tudor does it, I don't know mate. Get one of these on your wrist pronto! I'd love to hear your thoughts. Genuinely never thought I'd bond with it (after past experiences with the Black Bay) but wow... tightened up, refined. What more would we want? Thank you as always Pete. Much love brother 🥃
I have to admit, for someone who likes smaller watches even for a 7 in wrist, the 37 is just perfect for a sports watch like this for the casual outing days you have. It's vintage looking, but new internals/bones, and very well sized! If I had the money, I would buy it absolutely!
The way you can verbalise what I and probably a lot more of the community think about these pieces, and many more, is just brilliant. Congrats on the new addition, it’s a fantastic piece and I’m guessing, a future classic 👌
Got a Pelagos 39mm and cannot stop wearing it as my daily wearer. Tudor is doing everything more or less correctly, deliberately and slowly into a great direction! Congrats on the watch!
You knocked it out of the park amigo! Although not on my screen saver, the Black Bay 54 is on my radar screen. Fortunately for my pocketbook, my late father’s service watch was a Zodiac Sea Wolf. I grew up admiring that watch on his wrist. Being the second born, it was not my fate to possess it. Luckily, Zodiac has many reissues and a demure, non-date Super Sea Wolf adorns my wrist. Equal parts homage to my father, and to the past.
When a scaled down watch is as considered as this model... holy smokes... it's a home-run. Until this week I never thought of myself owning a Black Bay and now...yikes... cliche as it is, it's made me look at my collection differently. Let the culling commence 😆
Eloquently spoken & passionately presented. Congratulations on your purchase. I already own the 58. I did try on the 54. The first time I saw it in the flesh I thought it was too small. After mulling over it & watching all the social media hype I went to another boutique a few days later and tried it on again, then thought it looked & felt good on my wrist. However I still don't think it's worth replacing my 58. I prefer the classic size rather than the vintage iteration. I also prefer the red triangle and the gilt bezel matching the dial. I use to own the eta Black Bay 41 black bezel and I hated that the silver markings on the bezel didn't match the gilt dial. It looked like it belonged to a different watch. One must also remember that the vintage 54 was the predecessor of the 58, which was a evolutionary improvement over the earlier design. For me I think it's also safer to stick to a size I'm psychologically comfortable with because wearing a watch is like wearing clothes. I liken the 54 to skinny Jeans. Some people can pull it off, others like me will always feel self conscious I'm wearing one size too small. I don't have the 'risk appetite' as we say in the finance industry. I suggest anyone who is interested in purchasing the 54 should try it on first. Don't just follow the hype. It's not for everyone. My only fear is this may be a trend for smaller watches and once the novelty dies out, there will be a return to classic to bigger sizes again. These cycles come and go. I don't think Tudor planned this. I think it's just a trend towards androgynous fashion(think Harry Styles) and our current trend towards smaller watches that has led to the 54 release.
People love what’s new and hyped and the watch RUclipsrs have really hyped the 54. Yes, the BB54 has a better bracelet, but you are forgoing a lot. I feel 39 mm to be the perfect size for a sport/dive watch. Also, I love BB58’s gilt bezel numerals, red iconic triangle (Rolex Big Crown) and the snowflake seconds. I even like the coin edge bezel matching the crown. Without these characteristics the BB would be rather dull. All these charming characteristics have been removed on the BB54. Also the lugs on the BB54 are proportionally bigger giving it a less elegant, squared look. Also BB58 red triangle and larger crown references the classic Rolex Big Crown of the past. Just another cool fact. Newer is not always better.
@@michaelriera6277 You couldn't have said it better. RUclipsrs have really hyped this watch. It looked a little too plain to me, as you mentioned it lost all of it's charm when they stripped down all the features that made the 58 desirable. I think we may be going through a phase of simplification across the watch trends which is now being led by the Rolex Group. Take for instance the discontinuation of the Cellini line. They've replaced it with a simple time only 1908 model with no superior advantage over the Cellini. In fact the Cellini had a moonphase made out of meteorite and version with a dual time complication. The new 1908 has been heralded as an innovation in classism! what baloney. It's just a cheaper remake of the Cellini with a huge $20k price tag. For the same money I can buy any model in the Rolex steel sports watch catalogue and still have leftover change.
The Ranger in this 37mm case would be perfect. Looking at it on my wrist now, I can imagine how ridiculously good it would be... flat case, small crown... this could be the groundwork they're laying 😉
@@thomasstrange1826 The Alpinist limited is so much more interesting and finely finished IMO. A great size, solid movement, and a dial that's simple, direct, and far better proportioned than the Ranger.
Wonderful video. After a few years, I bought a BB58 in December and since then, no other watch has interested me. I love everything about the BB54, but not quite enough to consider a swap. If I hadn’t bought the BB58, I would buy this in a heartbeat because it is beautifully refined. Your take on this whole Tudor journey is 100% spot on. Please update us in the future (once the honeymoon period is over) as to which Tudor you prefer - I would be fascinated to know. 😉
When compared to the BB58, the lugs of BB54 are proportionally bigger giving it a less elegant, squared look. I like the gilted bezel and the BB58 red triangle and larger crown referencing the classic Rolex Big Crown as seen on the original James Bond.
Congratulations my friend 🎉 I've wanted a Black Bay 58 for years but outher things in life have got in the way, it's time i made a commitment to get one . I'll definitely look at the 54 .
Hi, i tried the 54 today, i arrived at the AD's wearing my 58, boy everything you said was exactly what i experienced, hopefully taking delivery soon, its absolutely perfect.
Just, wow man! I didn't particularly like the watch, but I've got to admit the video is so well spoken and you convey you thoughts with so much passion that I am now suddenly considering it
I know. I immediately thought too small for me when announced. I am 6'1", 220 lb with a 7.5" wrist. After listening to this video I will be checking it out at the AD. Never say never.
Congrats on the new watch! This was the best look at the BB54 yet, which is saying a lot. The size doesn't appeal to me, but between that and the refreshed 41mm Black Bay, I'm looking forward to whenever the BB58 gets the refresh treatment. T-fit all the clasps! Actually, I just want a Pelagos 39 in the same blue as the FXD.
Your synopsis on a vintage watch with modern updates was spot on. It’s the reason I couldn’t contain myself when they released the Explorer 1 124270 in 2021 and I got one 2 weeks after release. It’s my favorite watch. Same reasons you’ve elaborated so well on!
And not matter how hard I try to hide it, I'm still secretly lusting for the 124270... it's one of those itches that has to be scratched one day...one day 😆 Thanks for this Brian!
@@ID-Guy If I could only have (1) watch. The 124270 is THE watch..... vintage size with the modern movement, bracelet and lumed markers. Its basically the modern version of the 1016. Utter perfection! Don't try it on. I'm warning you! It harkens back to Rolex's finest days as a true tool watch with the impressive modern production capacity without any of the hype flex that many of the other modern models have.
All I have to say young sir is that you made a wise business decision! I trust the BB54 will remain in your collection for years to come. It has the roots from 1954 - classic - , and it has presence in its form - currency & robust. The perfect blend. I truly want to see this one in the metal. As always, you continue to hit it out of the park with your reviews! 🔥 🥃
I've recently purchased the 54 on rubber strap which I prefer over the bracelet, there's something special about this timepiece which draws you inn pleasantly reassuring satisfying aura of the history of this watch' its a perfect size for a vintage classic it sits on my 6.5 wrist perfectly and it's smouldering classic vintage good looks set it apart from any other black bay imo,it's tudors best dive watch atm followed by the pelagos 39mm and probably the 58 gets the bronze in my ratings 😂 a classic reborn and refined by tudor possibly the best dive watch release of 2023.
I have tested both the bb58 and the bb54 at my ad. Result: on the waiting list for the so refined and balanced bb54! June 23th: I finally got mine from another gentleman on Chrono24 at almost the normal price. It is fantastic. A stunner
I’m a daily BB58 wearer (black dial). The first time I put it on I wasn’t blown away by it like others were. However, over the years wearing it, it has grown on me so much. I also have a newer GMT Master ii and Submariner. Yet I enjoy the experience of owning the BB58 just as much (if not a little more, oddly). I’ve taken it on overseas trips, camping, mtn biking, exercising/swimming.. etc. Its so under the radar I never have to worry about it. Long story to say that I’m not sure the BB54 could add value to my watch experience. But I’m yet to try it on so we’ll see!
I would like to offer an alternative perspective from the typical watch community herd mentality.
@@michaelriera6277 The pop of red on the triangle is one of my favorite things. The BB58 has so much charm and character. Oddly, I forgot the BB58 had a gilt bezel. Not sure if mine just faded a lot but it looks more like a very light champagne or warm silver than it does gold. Overall, I agree with everything you said. The BB54 is the new flashy kid on the block, but I'm personally never going to give up my BB58 for one.
Just looking into the BB54 now.. what an absolute masterpiece! As much as I love my 58 you can’t beat the original dimensions.. it’s like they knew exactly what they wanted and got it right first time. Agree this was more like poetry and important history lesson, thank you sir 🫡
I was able to get my hands on this a few weeks ago and it’s a great watch, especially if you buy it with a spare rubber for those summer months. Congratulations on the new purchase!
Absolutely will be looking for a rubber strap to pair one of these days. Such an enjoyable lil watch, man... and thank you! Huge congratulations on yours too brother! 🥃
A really nice video and a number of well articulated points. I wondered whether there is a lot of ‘group think’ on RUclips amongst watch reviewers. This review certainly does not follow the grain, but there are quite a few ‘incremental’ features to the BB54, which do not really get away from the fact that it is a Black Bay. This is one reason why I bought a Heritage Chronograph, despite being drawn to the BBs available.
I believe Tudor’s releasing of the smaller Black Bays was more based on timing where the market for watch size preferences are. 2012 was still in the era of size preferences over 40mm, but in the last few years, Tudor assessed that the younger audience they had in mind was moving in the direction toward sub-40mm, unisex watch size preferences. Moreover, watch purchasing is growing at a precipitous rate in East Asia, where there is more of an impetus to offer watches that accommodate more slender male wrists. I personally have slender wrists, so my optimal Watch size preference is 36-40mm. Congratulations on your purchase, IDGuy!
It’s magnificent. I’ve been wanting Tudor to make a smaller sleeker version and now they have. I don’t fully understand why everyone wants big watches unless your a big person and your arm can take it as a large watch feel uncomfortable to wear on a small wrist. 37mm is the perfect size for me. 36mm is just as good. I think it will be a hugely popular watch and become a classic. Great video.
I am incredibly fortunate... Owning a 39mm & 42mm already and complimenting them with the in-between 37mm. They're all brilliant in their own way (which is what I tried to get across) Size can work across one platform so, so well. And man... the 37mm size for this kind of design that's sleek, trim & tight. It's perfect. And how it pairs with the 20mm lug's... Chef's kiss! 🔥
Congratulations on buying a watch as a “business decision” (likely story)! I’m glad you love it, and the review is terrific. Please keep up the great work. I’d respectfully suggest that you give the Grand Seiko SBGN027 a review. It’s so much finish, accuracy and dependability for the money. A hidden gem that deserves a place in everyone’s collection. They just don’t know it yet.
I have been seriously considering this. I mean what a timepiece. I have to say, it looks absolutely fantastic on your wrist close up, but even better at a distance. I buy watches to keep and such a timeless and functional design, it would never leave the collection. Bravo Tudor
Great review, thanks. After owning the BB54 for six months now, I still find myself gazing at the gilt markings and dial, particularly in sunlight. Also love the slim feel and weight. Fantastic watch!
Amazing video for an amazing watch! But for me, the 58 is what I bought, the blue one. It's more like a Tudor, with an iconic color, my wrists are pretty big and the 54 looked small, like a toy, while the 39mm looks and fits more elegantly, it's right on the spot. The crown is the perfect size, especially for me, as I like to switch watches, so I wind it more often. The mico-adjustment is a plus, I agree, but I wore the 58 in both summer and winter and I did not feel the need for one. So, for me was the perfect watch. I went to the Tudor boutique to buy a 54, and I left with a blue 58, I fell in love with the watch the second I tried it.
Absolutely. The 37mm size shouldn't put anyone off. It wears bigger while balancing out those proportions so neatly BUT then again, it should be experienced 😆🥃
@@ID-Guy Agreed, i believe the BB54 crystal diameter is 29.2mm vs 30.8 of the BB58 which is not much larger. The the dial on the BB54 does't look small.
I love how you cut to the chase of the design. I originally trained in architecture, so I'm run-in to the lingo they use, I actually sat in a meeting and heard a man (in a fur coat with a handbag) say, "I dream of a world free from the constraints of aesthetic control" but I kind of knew what he meant.
So crazy how much our experiences align. I tried the BB58 on at least 5-6 times because I love photos of it, but for whatever reason, I never bonded with it. I too have an FXD and thought the 54 would be too small, as honestly, I thought the 58 was too small. Perhaps that wasn't the real issue. While traveling on vacation I had a chance to see the 54 and try it on, just because. The moment it hit my wrist I was blown away. The watch I tried on was already sold to someone else, but I have already made calls to my AD's to get on the wrist. So strange how I am in love with this model, but did not like the 58, when visually, they seem so close. Strange that I thought the 58 was too small, but I don't think that about the 54. The 54 just wears so perfect and looks so classy and unassuming..its hard to describe. For me at least, they nailed it. I can't think of a single thing I would change...and I am not sure that has ever been the case. Oh wait...drilled lugs!
As a guy with a 6.5inch rounded shaped wrist, the bb58 seem to be the perfect watch on paper but the lug to lug of ~48mm at the extremity was always a tad too long to my liking. Kudos to Tudor for releasing the 54 to accommodate us who are ‘in between’ watch sizes. I wish this had a flat matte dial and graduated bezel but then again they know what they’re doing and they won’t ever give us everything 😅
On the dial front, its actually difficult to explain. It's not matte or gloss, but more like a satin that only shows that slight sunburst in direct light. Even then it's very mild (much milder than most would think) But then indoors etc. it plays very much like a matte dial with a slight sheen. If you can ever experience one of these BB54's, highly recommend it. with a 6.5inch wrist, you'll dig it so much! 🥃
@@ID-Guy Thank you for the feedback! I think this is Tudor's dial design language when it comes to 'smaller' versions (like the bb54, p39) of their initial range lineups. I suspect its the same sort of dial as the Pelagos 39, which im happy to say fits my 6.5 inch very well due to the more compact case size vs the bb58. The dial, like you said appears flat/matte black in most lighting but has a sheen to it under certain lights. I think what they did was use a matte base and topped it off with a satin finish
The size in hand was one of my biggest surprises (pun intended) I expected it to wear much, much smaller even on my average wrist. Pleasantly surprised at how much presence and balance it has without overstaying its welcome 🥃
I‘ve had this for a couple of weeks and is not a watch that you fall in love with at first sight but a watch that keeps on impressing as you get to know it.
I took advantage of the drop in BB58 2nd hand prices and got that instead. I enjoy the quirks over the refinement but when the BB58 finally gets a Metas movement I will get the updated version and all those refinements you speak of will be built in~ By the way love your content it’s one of the most thoughtful watch channels on RUclips!
I should've added this in the video. Now is the PERFECT time to hunt for a BB58. Maybe by as early as next year the 58 collection will have all the same refinements, with METAs absolutely right. And a huge congratulations for grabbing the 58 when you did, wise thinking 😉
Outstanding video! I wear a blue BB58 daily. I really like it! I think I would love the slightly smaller & lighter BB54 with the better clasp, however.
Hahahaha knew you wouldn’t be able to resist this one. Yes this is the purest black bay ever produced. I’m looking at buying one for myself soon. Had to sell my fxd because it was too big for an everyday watch for my 6 1/4 inch wrists
Tudor are masters at marketing. The 54 is nicer than the 58, and we may be lusting over it now, but there'll be another variant next year that we'll all be lusting after, maybe in blue or maybe a 925 version. Me, I'm suffering Tudor fatigue and sold all my BBs from the original ETA smiley to the 58 and the 54 which BTW you can get from ADs if you look around. I know it's different kettle of fish, but you can't beat the real McCoy, an original 1950s small crown guard Sub like the 5508, I'll never tire of that one (he says) ...
Superb presentation and congrats on your 54. I'll be keeping my 58 as the red triangle and gilt bezel are what makes it special for me. They are both excellent watches.
Dude I cannot agree with you more. I first saw this watch and was curious. The curiosity turned into a piqued interest which gave way to obsession once I saw the dial in the metal. I'm super happy to own it now and truly feel it's a special offering from Tudor.
Great video, i do love the 54 still, even i had the opportunity yesterday at my AD to experience this beauty live… and all of your points i could underline, great look, slim, vintage appealing, proportions, but i had problems with turning the bezel… the prongs were so small to get any grip… in the video i saw you had not any difficulties, and also there is the tiny crown ( sure, when do you ever have to wind it it, but to set the time it will come the time to unlock the crown and my fingers are slim, but was kind of tricky to unlock the crown anyway ) Looking forward to your daily wearing experience review one day … cheers marc
I think the BB54 is gorgeous and has a lot of improvements over the 58 in terms of the clasp and crown tube. That said, I think part of the hype is how over-covered/discussed/reviewed the 58 is. You can’t seem to find a video not talking about it. That watch has been talked to death and now the 54 is something fresh and exciting. I wonder what people would think if these two came out at the same time (with the same clasp as each other). I personally prefer the 58 for the character but I see why people love this too
I was fortunate enough to buy the 54 week of release. I have just sold my OG58 which was entirely redundant. So is this the definitive Black Bay diver? In my view, 100% and that is to be celebrated. Team Wilsdorf has just reissued a 50's diver. Wow. Perhaps we can hope for a red triangle, big crown piece, in a case much smaller than the 41, in the near future. Accompanying rose logo and smiley text would be ever better. Great video as ever, sir - bravo!
Once again, fantastic review. The dial and bracelet changes to the BB36 were pretty disappointing for me in that I think they dramatically altered the character of the watch. However, with the BB54, to your point, this seems to be the ultimate refinement of the Heritage to the 58 and now the 54. This does seem to be the definitive BB if the mission was to honor the past with modernity. It'll be interesting to see how this line evolves. Tudor seem to do what Rolex do, unsurprisingly, in that they refine iteratively. Where I have issues with Rolex sometimes is that refine to the point where a piece no long seems to reflect it's original purpose, tools evolve into jewelry. Hopefully, Tudor will avoid this path because, from my perspective, the BB54 is just about perfect. Congrats, wear in good health, cheers 🥃!
I feel you with the new BB36 lines. Extremely flashy with those bright dials (very unlike the new BB divers) and brilliant point re evolution to jewellery. I never even considered that this might be Tudor's future if they don't watch out 😆 Thank you so much as always Nick. Feeling immensely lucky that I was able to get hands on the BB54 early. Don't let the naysayers put it down 😂🥃
The Tudor BB54 is more Rolex Submariner than any current Rolex Submariner. It’s so vintage looking like matching very closely to the 6538 Sub. The size is great and the look is beautiful. I’m still up in the air deciding on a BB54 or a BB 58. Both a fantastic watches!
Incredible video, your passion and insight really shines through in this in a way similar to when you talk of vintage omega. What a treat. Keep it up and thanks for the super fun content!
Always a pleasure to share my ramblings, it truly means a lot that somebody out there can sit and listen to be prattle on about watch design 😆 Thank you so much brother 🥃
The other very important point that you made, was that this does not wear as small as so many people think. Once I went to try it on at my local AD, I was shocked at just how much it felt like my BB58 in terms of overall size. It was just the weight and thickness that struck me as different. The rest seemed to be about the same. So, it really does wear larger that I would have expected, and I am sure larger than most all other 37mm watches.
Love your review. I think folks that get either a BB58 or a BB54 are winners. Imagine a 58 at 37mm with a bigger gnarled crown without the tube so it sits flat on the case. Imagine the bezels with the same grip as the 54 but still with the BB58 bezel insert. Imagine the BB58 with the lollipop seconds hand and the smiley face dial. That my friends would be the end game. Right then and there. That is how you can refine it more. If the size of 54 does well it would be nice to make the 58 that size or at least 38mm with the same thickness gliding true to the old but still very modern with the movement. That would be my dream watch.
Well, mate. You did it again. Now reconsidering my initial thoughts on this reference and will need to take a closer look. Inspired pairing with the Pelagos.
Honestly don't know how Tudor are doing it, but this lil BB54 is something else. Might have a delayed fuse (size etc) but it has surprised me on so many levels as a package. As a daily driver that's subtle and doesn't call attention to itself... holy smokes they have nailed it... BUT that's just my (pedantic) opinion 😆 Saying that though, I'm deliberately taking the FXD away with me for a week with a handful of straps for hiking, trail riding and swimming (planning on giving it a good workout) 😉
I personally find the BB54 too small on my 7.5“ wrist. However, I guess that there were quite a few people who where very excited of this watch when Tudor introduced it at W & W. With the new slimmer METAS version of the 41, the new BB54 and the BB58 Tudor now offers a matching BB for everyone.
What an insightful journey into the delivery of this understated but brilliantly executed timepiece. While I love the BB58, this is exactly what I yearn for. It is irresistible.
Excellent review!!! I always look forward to the next ID Guy video and you never disappoint. Congratulations on the new watch and wear it in good health! I was paying zero attention to this BB54 until you just opened my eyes to what it is in the metal. While my head tells me this a great design direction and we need thinner Tudor watches, I for some reason still can’t get the Diet Pepsi GMT out of my head even though I know it needs similar refinements. At 6-foot 4 and 183 lbs with a 7-inch wrist, I wonder if I won’t prefer the the GMT longer term… the BB58 seems a bit boring to me. Perhaps it’s a victim of its own design near perfection?
Really happy they made one that ticks all of your boxes; congrats! I love the size of this, and there is no need for me to say why I prefer the 58. It's fantastic they offer so many choices now.
Agreed. The gilt bezel, the red triangle, even the snow flake second hand all make a rather dull watch fun. The BB54 may have the better clasp, but it is quite a yawner.
I am buying the 54 on rubber. I have a blue 58. I love this watch. I think it is really cool. Often brands do throwbacks and charge an arm and a leg. This is extremely reasonably priced. My only gripe is make it metas.
Great video as always and congrats on your new BB54! It's a great looking watch; and I think it could check all the boxes for many people. But with my 7.75 inch wrist, I think a 37mm case might be too small. I don't like anything too big either. But for my wrist size, I think 39-42mm cases are more of my comfort zone. However, I do love many of the features on the new BB54; and it's my hope Tudor will upgrade the BB58 next year, to at least include the new T-Fit clasp (which I kind of think they will). Since Rolex is getting so expensive (even if you could buy at retail), I have high hopes for Tudor in the years going forward!
I wish the 58 would have the better clasp. Got a 20cm wrist but nonetheless gonna try on the 54. Probably gonna be very small but excited to find out. If it somehow fits anyway I’m gonna buy it. This watch just looks amazing.
Have you tried it on? I did and it wears very nice and the clasp adjustment is tops. Have you compared it to the 58? As to the way it looks I feel it’s a bit plain at least when compared to the 58 which has pops of color of red triangle, gilt bezel, and unique snowflake seconds hand. I also like how easy it is to grip the chunky crown on the 58. It picks up traits from vintage Rolex/Tudors without being an exact copy. Kind of its own thing.
@@michaelriera6277 Absolutely nothing wrong with either of these watches (apart from the faux rivets on the bracelet), and I'm getting a bit tired of those 'comparison' videos which seek to say which is 'better'. Entirely a personal taste thing, and no owner of either watch should feel they've somehow missed out on the other or made the wrong decision.
Congratulations IDGuy on getting the BB54. Rocket surgeon at5:28! Brilliant, cross one of those with a brain scientist and you could sent your contents of the cranium to the moon and back. I have yet to see the BB54 in the flesh but I intend to take a look at some point. I have the BB58 guilt and black along with a Pelagos 39, two similar in spec watches that are completely different on the wrist and design. I think the BB54 is likely to be another that fits into this category. Apart from the course bezel and crown knurling and the size that I like I find the T-Fit is the big plus. This on the fly adjustment is on the P39 (although longer for the diver extension) and the BB Pro and both work brilliantly from my experience. Areas that I'm unsure about without seeing it include the lolly pop second hand in place of the small snowflake (this seems to be the case on the 2023 Tudor introductions apart from the GMT if I recall) and the loss of guilt numerals (now silver) on the bezel along with the red triangle although the blue BB58 didn't have that either. I'll take a look to form a better view. Many thanks for sharing.
When it becomes your wallpaper watch - you know it’s on countdown to ownership. I’ve done it numerous times and it’s pathologically inevitable. This video has become in sorts; a gateway video in itself to me -allegorically like a wallpaper watch so thanks ID guy for bringing it from your perspective . I too follow a similar interest in the vintage inspired , symmetrically balanced dial watches and have owned the prs29a in all formats and also the smiths Everest in gilt but this Tudor is a masterpiece of making something old , new again. What a gem !
Absolutely brilliant video, and your conclusions on this watch are spot on. As someone who was a 40mm and above case size watch guy this is the first time that I can truly say Tudor nailed the vintage Tudor and Rolex submariner aesthetic that many have been waiting for. On day one of my ownership of this timepiece and I truly believe this may be the definitive Black Bay we have been waiting for. Keep up the great work!
hi I saw this video after buying the Tudor BB 54 about a month ago. I was one of the lucky ones because in Naples it's a bit difficult to get it, few specimens arrive and it seems to be becoming an icon. Meanwhile, I fully agree with what you said in your review of the 54 which I am enjoying as I consider it a perfectly successful watch, from all points of view.
Random Tudor thought - such a shame they’ve got rid of the smiley writing as third party movements depart the range. Why couldn’t they bring this back for models with “Master Chronometer” written on the dial?
Congrats on pulling even with me on Tudor ownership (I’ll retake the lead when the Opaline GMT arrives). The 54 - to use one of your country’s expressions punches way above its weight easily crossing over between the dress, casual, and sporty environments.
The BB58 navy blue is my favorite Tudor so far. Not a big fan of gilt so let’s see if they put a BB54 blue version out in the future. I do want to see it in the metal to feel it on wrist.
Totally get your love for Blue. I wouldn't change the FXD for anything (that Tudor blue is perfection) BUT man... the proportions of the BB54. It's too cool 🥃
Good video, brother! I guess it depends on what you want. Whilst I appreciate these well-made points, my blue 58 is for me a Goldilocks watch. It has everything I want in a modern, well-made, practical, versatile watch. Everything works as you should expect and its quirks make it all the more endearing. These days on a Forstner Model J and that is a home run.
Im just glad one of these company’s had the balls to make such a small diver. I have been waiting for a watch like this for a long time. Until now we really only had the oris pro diver 36mm or the Captain Cook 37mm
Thoroughly enjoyed your breakdown of this. Subbed! The bb58 has been the watch that I’ve wanted for years but I would really like to try this on before I commit!
As always another great video. I don't own a Tudor, although I would like to. After watching your video, and listening to you on your many videos in the past, the one term comes to mind. Details. So as I looked at the 54 versus the 58, I must be honest, on appearance alone, i choose the 58. The warm tones the 58 has throughout the watch, from the bezel to the handset, I feel the 54 misses that. With that said I should try on the 54 and see if the feel is that much more to sway me. Thank you and have a wonderful and safe New Year.
Absolutely love your videos. They are the best in a crowded field. Cannot wait to see what you come up with next. You are largely the reason I decided to get a Tudor FXD. I own several other watches and I cannot bring myself to take the FXD of my wrist.
Another Black Bay? I am not a Rolex Fan Boy. I think Tudor is more accessible and pleasing. I have the Omega 2222.80 36mm.Wouldn't trade it for all the money in the world (Almost). Yes, your Seamaster '57 is the best all around Watch! I am looking for a 39-41mm next. Your premise that this model is what Tudor envisioned for the Black Bay is spot on!! TClasp and the size of the clasp is really what most enthusiast are looking for. Great video....Again.
Really thorough and nice video. I do not think the pictures of it does it justice. I'm not a huge fan of the BB dial, but I went to see it at my local AD this weekend. And that got me really excited. So I went down there again yesterday to see if the love was still there.. and wops, I bought it. Really over the moon with it.
I purchased the 54 and sold it 7-days later. Looks great in the press shots and on paper makes a lot of sense for me, as I love 36mm watches. But this left me feeling nothing at all. It's just a bit, I don't know, boring. A close friend has the new 58 on the Jubilee, which hasn't got as much attention as the 54. But it's a much "better" watch if you like larger watches. I also think Tudor messed up the proportions of the lug thickness...it looks like the old Rolex Maxi cases found on the old sub and GMT. The bracelet doesn't flow into the case at all. May sound like a minor detail, but it matters IMO. I'm looking to see where Tudor take the 54, but this version isn't it.
My biggest concern was that it would be too small. Saying it wears like a 38.5 is exactly what I needed to hear as I think that’s a perfect size for an all rounder. I don’t consider the 58 to be elegant. This definitely is. I never considered the 58, a little too generic and feeling of homage to Rolex. Nice enough but somehow incomplete. This is a watch virtually at the pinnacle of its refinement, squeezing every little bit of heritage, looks, movement, finishing, bracelet into one great neat little package. I think I totally get it. Good for you. Size wise it suits your wrist perfectly. I’m gonna take a leap here and say I think I even prefer it to the omega!
Enjoy the clip!
the exposed crown tube has always bothered me too
@@Destijl86 We're never satisfied until we are 😉 Makes one helluva difference. Maybe it does lose some of the "Black Bay charm" in the process, but a flush fitting crow is just 🔥
I can appreciate how well made Tudor watches are made, but I just cannot get past the snowflake hour hand.
I know you said you like remakes/reissues.... but what's your take on straight vintage?
It was my pleasure to sell it to you buddy 😉
I hope you enjoy this lovely watch as much as I did, briefly 😅
Lovely video!
@@ID-Guy Well, you _have_ worked on some prestigious things! They should check you out and take note imo 🙂
This video is pure poetry! How do you get to the essence of the matter so perfectly and without a word wasted? I love your emphasis on design intent, often overlooked in favor of discussing specs. You’re a treasure for the Watch community!
Adrian from Bark & Jack did say that ID Guy would know how to articulate the feelings of owning the BB54 well!
That's a blowjob level comment 😂
Thank you Teej! Love trying to bring design forward and making it the subject of the conversation and at the end of the day I'm going to credit it all to luck. Just lots and lots of luck 😉 Really appreciate the kind words, brother. Thank you! 🥃

I watched this post more than a couple of times before buying the BB54 and I have continued to watch it having bought the watch. This review is such a true and comprehensive commentary of the watch.
No one will ever, ever make a video as great as this over the BB54. Congrats! This was amazing. Thank you.
Congratulations on the purchase, this piece looks like it has ticked all the right boxes
I think Tudor has carefully listened to constructive criticism over the past ten years and it shows
I must say the footprint looks absolutely superb on your wrist.
It’s the perfect understated watch that doesn’t attract too much attention that suits me fine.
I am back considering the P39 to replace Pelagos OG, BB58 and maybe a Sub. I had option for one last year, but turned it down.
Well done Tudor. May the trend for smaller watches continue, I want subtlety and elegance alongside capability.
Wish they would keep refining the ranger down a 37 or even a 36. We can dare to dream. Love the reviews.
The Ranger in this 37mm case would be perfect. Looking at it on my wrist now, I can imagine how ridiculously good it would be... flat case, small crown... this could be the groundwork they're laying 😉
@@ID-Guy Would be just what I am hoping for. Until then sticking with Alpinist 1959 limited.
@@thomasstrange1826 The Alpinist limited is so much more interesting and finely finished IMO. A great size, solid movement, and a dial that's simple, direct, and far better proportioned than the Ranger.
Great idea. Id say make it 36 since it doesnt have much of a bezel. Would be fire.
Congrats on your new 54! It’s an instant modern classic. It’s a faithful reproduction. It’s a vintage 911 with modern tech. I want one!
Congratulations my friend 🎉 I've wanted a Black Bay 58 for years but outher things in life have got in the way, it's time i made a commitment to get one . I'll definitely look at the 54 .
Something tells me you won't regret the jump to the BB54. It is so understated but man, they smashed it! 🥃
Hi, i tried the 54 today, i arrived at the AD's wearing my 58, boy everything you said was exactly what i experienced, hopefully taking delivery soon, its absolutely perfect.
Just, wow man! I didn't particularly like the watch, but I've got to admit the video is so well spoken and you convey you thoughts with so much passion that I am now suddenly considering it
It's a trap I tell you! A well-packaged trap! Trojan Horse! 😆🥃
After Cole Pennigton, Tudor should hire IDGuy! The poetic and artistic vision of this BB 54 has never been well explained before.
I'm guessing Cole got this 54 hookup "legend"
Just another cool fact. Newer is not always better.
Not the analysis we deserve but the analysis we need.
A great response that I totally agree with.
Besides Watchfinder you are the most well spoken watch reviewer on YT. Cheers to your new timepiece bro!
I went to the Tudor boutique to buy a 54, and I left with a blue 58, I fell in love with the watch the second I tried it.
congratulations on your catch 54, it’s the definitive modernized classic; vintage without the vintage vulnerabilities
BB54 is genuinely a uni-sex watch. For a man who wants a small diver or a woman who wants a big watch. It is a win win.
Congratulations on the BB54 acquisition! It's terrific. Really nice watch. Enjoy it in good health.
I tried the 54 at the AD this week expecting it to be way too small but I instantly connected with it. If only it had the Rose logo on the dial…
The size in hand was one of my biggest surprises (pun intended) I expected it to wear much, much smaller even on my average wrist. Pleasantly surprised at how much presence and balance it has without overstaying its welcome 🥃
@@S-A-M. I would say the same as a pre-ceramic Submariner compared to the Submariner 41. In other words, like a vintage version of the same watch.
Congrats! This is such a perfect release. Almost definitely my next purchase!
Same here. Added the BB58 Blue for 40% off retail price - was gently used! Love it!
My understanding is that Metas doesn't mean it's a different or better movement. It's just adjusted to higher tolerances.
The latest Tudor watches have been too clinical and bland. No character, just like you said.
Agree. Its a more charming watch for sure .
Best review of bb54 so far. Thanks!
My pleasure to share Malvin. I tried to be as methodical as possible BUT I'm sure quite a few points slipped through the cracks at the same time 🥃
Incredible video, your passion and insight really shines through in this in a way similar to when you talk of vintage omega.
Yes it does slighly,,,, its still titchy though… made me feel like a Japanese girl …and not in a good way!
@@ads-porewealth96 hahahahahaaaaaa😂😂😂😂
Best review I have seen on the 54.
And it was a pleasure to share it. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch the video 🥃
I like the 58 better. It has a warmer feel, a little less sterile. And I like the larger size.
Agreed. The gilt bezel, the red triangle, even the snow flake second hand all make a rather dull watch fun. The BB54 may have the better clasp, but it is quite a yawner.
Congratulations my friend on both the watch and the outstanding video 👏🙏🥃
I am buying the 54 on rubber. I have a blue 58. I love this watch. I think it is really cool.
Often brands do throwbacks and charge an arm and a leg. This is extremely reasonably priced. My only gripe is make it metas.
Edited my other comment didn't mean to disregard yours just added to it.
@@rolexer No worries at all 😉
Just received my BB54 on rubber strap. LOVE IT!!!!!! I didn’t need it either. I already had the gilt BB58. But this is such a perfect package!
Awesome review....glad you got this watch for review. You are one of the best on RUclips
BB58 still the sweet spot for me, at least for size. But this 54 looks sublime. Less can be more.
This is the first Black Bay I’ve genuinely been tempted by
hi I saw this video after buying the Tudor BB 54 about a month ago. I was one of the lucky ones because in Naples it's a bit difficult to get it, few specimens arrive and it seems to be becoming an icon. Meanwhile, I fully agree with what you said in your review of the 54 which I am enjoying as I consider it a perfectly successful watch, from all points of view.
My first entry level luxury watch. And couldn’t have made a better choice.
I bought this on the rubber strap and it is fantastic having the T Fit clasp on the rubber. So lightweight and comfortable. Brilliant daily driver.
👍 Congratulations friend. Its a joy listening to you talk about watches so beautifully
Looks great. Congrats and yes I think this is the way they wanted it to be.
This is a helpful introduction to BB54
Great video brother and congrats on the new purchase 👏
Its ok and great to cover more and more Tudors. The brand is definitely pushing out really good stuff these last few years
Another Black Bay?
So I went
down there again yesterday to see if the love was still there.. and wops, I bought it. Really over the moon with it.
Great in-depth review ! I love these new dimensions, I hope I'll be able to put my hands on this one day
I purchased the 54 and sold it 7-days later. I'm looking to see where Tudor take the 54, but this version isn't it.
looks amazing and congrats mate. Tried one on last week and its sublime
Simply, the 54 is BB perfection!
