    What James shows in the beginning, how the level 10 looks different in different photos, is so important for people to understand. Lighting, and thus angles, really affect how the hair color will appear and reflect. Many people are using photos for their hair inspiration that they don't understand is just a result of the lighting, the angle, even filters and photoshop! In many cases it's not even natural hair, it's a wig, or even a wig with photoshop!
    To see how much lighting affects color appearance, you can take pics of your hair the following ways: indoor lighting daytime, indoor lighting nighttime, indoor with flash, and then without flash, outdoor lighting direct sun, outdoor w/ indirect sun, and indoor nighttime with candlelight. If you have a ring light, you can play with the different shades and see different results in cool vs warm lighting too.

    Thank you for this video! Could you PLEASE make a toning video about the hardest levels to tone- levels 7+8. Being a stylist, to me that is the hardest thing imaginable in toning to do, to make a Carmel color with no excess brass.

    Please help! I’m a level 6/7 mix hair after bleaching. I don’t wish to go lighter but I’m left with brassy tones. My natural hair has red in it, and unlike the common current trends, I do like a warmer blond. Is there anything you could advice to use? Should I use a blue toner? Or should I get a semi permanent ash colour? I don’t want the hair to become darker. I’m a bit desperate! I’d appreciate any help! Thanks for you time to read this anyway. Loved the video

    • @TheLifeOfHair
      @TheLifeOfHair  3 года назад

      Hi Alex thanks for your question that is an extremely difficult thing to answer it will very much depend on the brand it will depend on how much yellow is present in the hair it is a bit of a trial and error thing if the hair is very yellow then it’s going to be on a level 9. level nine violet will be appropriate where is if the hair is on a level 10 then you need a level 10 violet each level has slightly less or more tone in it depending on how light or dark it is if that makes sense ?

    Just balayaged my hair... nice highlights on a natural level 7.5. Now i want to tone just the highlights... do i have to sift and sort the tiny pieces and avoid my natural hair,...? I am afraid the wella t 11 toner will end up lightening my base color and i dont want that. Any advice ?

    I use Shade EQ level 5N for shadow roots that was lifted orangy. in about a week later, the shadow root become faded ,not good at all. I afraid to use permanent 5n or 5 ash because it will make harder for touch up ombre next time. Any solution? tks

    • @TheLifeOfHair

      Hi Amanda I would’ve probably said that using a natural ash or just ash tone on the root stretching would’ve given you a less orange fade. Also it depends on how many times the client wash their hair and what they wash their hair with remember shades EQ only lasts 20 shampoos if you process it for 20 minutes if you want more colour deposit then shed key provides then you could always use HD res or Dialight / dia richess from L’Oreal Hope that helps

    How do you tone multi level blonde? I'm not sure your videos are intended for folks doing DIY jobs but needs must. I baby lighted my hair and then used 10v +10p which worked well on lightest parts, but have some warm tones in the level 9 parts of my hair which as far as I understand, the 10 wouldn't have touched. How would one address a situation like that with a toning formula? Your videos have been very informative, thank you.

    • @TheLifeOfHair
      @TheLifeOfHair  4 года назад +6

      Well that’s a great question, so in a nut shell you can’t unless you are able to pick out the darker area’s and tone them on there own. So really it’s a toss up between keeping the hair looking light and toning the lighter pieces that you’ve got on the level 10 or dropping it all down to the darkest level as you say level 9 the only way to do it otherwise it is to tone the hair outside of the foils at the time of the application of foils hope this helps best James 😁👍🏻

    • @Hollyferris
      @Hollyferris 4 года назад +1

      The Life Of Hair Oooh I see. I did consider using level 9 toner but as you say, wanted to keep the lighter parts. Toning between foils sounds rather technical! I think I'll just accept the job I've done so far and hand over to a professional at soonest opportunity! Thank you for your reply 😊

    I generally tone 1 to 2 levels above like you did, especially with ash tones :-)

    • @TheLifeOfHair

      Yes definitely a good idea to dilute those Ash tones

    • @paytensplace5046
      @paytensplace5046 3 года назад +1

      So does this mean if your hair is at like, a level 8 with orange-y tones, you’d tone with a level 9-10 ash toner to prevent too much color being deposited onto the hair? If so, why do people say you can’t tone a level 7-8 blonde with a level 10 toner?? I’m so confused 😓

    • @DanteVelasquez
      @DanteVelasquez 3 года назад +3

      @@paytensplace5046 yes I would use either level 8, 9 or 10 depending on the hair and circumstance and what the end result I want is. When toning with ash it gets darker so if there are highlights of the hair is very porous then I would use level 10 so it doesn’t end up looking too dark. If the hair is not very porous, the lifted pigment is very orange or yellow ,or the individual strands are thick then I would tone with a level 8 to make sure it takes because it would need more strength to penetrate and stay. You can absolutely tone a level 8 with a level 8 but it could end up looking more like a level 7 or 6. With warm tones it won’t get as dark. With red tones it might not be as vibrant so I would also tone a level 8 with a level 9 toner depending on whether a cooler or warmer red was desired. In any case the most important factor is that it will depend entirely on the individual circumstances of each clients case, ie what level was the starting level, what level is desired, was the hair virgin hair or has it been previously colored, the health and condition of the hair and the desired end result.

    • @paytensplace5046

      @@DanteVelasquez good info!! Thank you! I’m currently a grown own probably level 7-8, pulling orange tones with some yellow, desired cool ashy blonde at a level 8-9. My hair hasn’t been touched in about a year, but when it was done last it was done with bleach and a toner.

    • @DanteVelasquez
      @DanteVelasquez 3 года назад +2

      @@paytensplace5046 I would say mix a 9 and 10. You could do 9a and 10n, 9n and 10a, or a 9a and 10a for instance depending on how ashy you wanted your result. Mixing the two will give a better range and include blue for the orange and 10 purple for the yellow. If you have a lot of orange then you want more blue. Make sure to use low developer - 5 or 6 volume is best for no lift and deposit only :-)

    I have a specific question that I can’t seem to have answered in any RUclips video or google search, I’d love to know your advice!
    I’m naturally about a level 7ish. And I’m trying to get to a level 9.
    I want a really nice light, natural, cool blonde. NOT ash! More like a beige color. I don’t want any silver or purple, just a nice light blonde but every time I try to dye it, it turns yellow/orange at the roots and does absolutely nothing to my lengths? I think I’ve come to understand that I have to bleach my hair to a level 9, but my question is, how long to I leave bleach in my hair to only lift it 2 levels and not further? And what toner do I use to get it to the nice, cool, beigey color I want? Thanks so much :)

    • @TheLifeOfHair
      @TheLifeOfHair  3 года назад

      Hi thanks your question of a very difficult for me to answer how long you should bleach your hair for but I would say if you monitor it closely make sure the condition isn’t deteriorating nice manufacturers recommend up to 50
      minutes always follow the manufacturers guidelines. Turn the wise another tricky one it all depends on the left you get if there is any orange present you will need a play based natural shade to neutralise the orange if it is yellow you’ll need a violet based on natural hope this helps you a little bit is very difficult for me to tell you exactly what to do on here I hope that feels in some gaps for you all the best James

    • @samanthacongreve3720
      @samanthacongreve3720 3 года назад +1

      Hi Travis. This happens when the heat of the flat iron is to high. Ideally the temperature should not be any higher than 180*c if it is then your burning the toner out of the hair and that’s why it changes colour. You need to be using a flat iron with a temperature dial so it can be adjusted accordingly. Hope this helps.

I’m on that assumption if you tone it with something that is violet you will not turn it green so something like 9V dependent on how yellow your hair is if it’s not very yellow but it is yellow a little bit then you’ll need 9N9V mix together to prevent it from going violet hope that helps all the best James

      Hi Leslie so I don’t Have a massive amount of knowledge of the Wella toner series I do have some now so the only thing that it could be is that the hair that you’ve applied it to isn’t necessarily level nine yellow of course it may well be but I can’t actually see it. The reason I say that is that if the hair is more gold yellow that means that there is some orange present and that orange town is what is being consumed by the toner and therefore you are being left with a yellowish colour it is quite difficult for me to give you accurate advice as I cannot see the result. If you want to send me a picture you could add me to Instagram send me a direct message of your hair taken in good direct sunlight and I could maybe help you further @thelifeofhair1
