  • We went paddle boarding by the notorious Flat bridge in Bog Walk St Catherine and became the first to document the underside of the bridge! 🥇🏆.
The bridge and the gorge in which is reside is notorious for vehicular accidents. It is widely believed that accidents at the bridge are caused by either the ghosts of the slave builders, those that met their untimely demise in accidents or, wait for it, mermaids. 🧜‍♀️. Needless to say a lot of mystery and superstition surrounds the 200+ year old, rail-less bridge. Ghosts, mermaids and quicksand (how did we forget the quicksand,) sounds like a cool place to spend the day.
The actions in this video were carried out by a trained swimmer with the necessary safety apparatus. We do not recommend that you attempt these actions. If you do, you do so at your own risk.
    History
While it cannot be positively ascertained when this bridge was built, it was definitely constructed after 1724. Edward Long describes it in his History of Jamaica printed in 1774:[1]
This bridge is flat and composed of planks on frame of timberwork which rests upon two piers and two buttresses projecting from the banks, constructed with piles and braces interlaced with masonry.
When the bridge was being constructed, the sixteen plantations in the Bog Walk area were obliged to send one enslaved African in every fifty to work on the River Road, sometimes called Sixteen Mile Walk. Gravel, marl, lime, sand and stone had to be dug. Slaves often lost their lives as they performed dangerous tasks in the Gorge. Contracts for timber and for masons to work on the bridge were authorized at vestry meetings.
Between 1881 and 1915, the floor of the bridge was washed away and later re-floored with iron girders and buckle plates taken from the original flooring of the May Pen bridge.[2] Today, the bridge of three spans is supported by two piers and two abutments. In the 1930s it had metal handrails and later wooden ones, but these were devoured by the river at different times. Hemispheres of stone are now the only protection on the bridge itself.

Nothing to fear, except the dams.

This is how man conquer nature and dispel notions of myths and fallacy. I bet Jamaicans were expecting to see the gold table come up from the depths of the river, or some other tale.

You think Mermaid just come up from the bridge. I loss two friends 1994. Coming from a funeral in Linstead and the car got out of control and it went over the river.Very dangerous bridge. I don't know why the Chinese Government don't build another bridge over it.Look at the Casway its over the sea. When it rains you can't drive over flat bridge.
