Obviously its a tall cup writing a long an epic fantasy but there's so many great authors who do it and dont get half the recognition Martin does. writing the ending is a lot harder, specially if your style of writing is more Gardener than Architecture where you already have thought out your ending right from the start
from all the many storylines that are interconnected with each other, details, foreshadowing and conspiracy theories that have to have pay offs while also making sense
I mean if you've read them you know there's an enormous amount of Set Ups that now have to pay off and most of that has to happen in The Winds of Winter and with all this he's been having to deal with the show(multiple shows) and feeling burnt out and uninspired as well, so I'm not surprised at all, considering that he wants it all to end Great and not just good, he's a Perfectionist and he's paying for that and that's why I don't think the pushback does anything positive, he definitely cares about it more than we do but my whole point is that it's more complicated than most people make it out to be, some people talk about it as if he's just Lazy or he just doesn't care which I find very stupid.
if he takes alternative projects when he's trying to finish Winds of Winter then that means he's pretty burnt out and his creativity is not working well and that's why he did other projects.

I am of two minds on Martin's writing speed: writing slow has value, and good writers take their time in crafting a well-put-together story. I do not begrudge someone putting as much effort as possible into a text to make it the best possible product. I'm also not going to criticise his habit of gardening in epic fantasy. It's a perfectly valid approach to writing.
However, I do take issue with just how much else he took on in the interim between 2011 and now. I get that procrastination and success based stress are things, but he took on multiple writing projects for other books and for TV. He has also finished 2 whole 700+ Page books and a number of short stories related to the ASoIaF universe in that almost 10-year time frame. That is to say nothing of his writing responsibilities for television or his producing roles. He clearly enjoys writing and writes a lot. Otherwise, we would see nothing in these last 9 years. But we have ample evidence that he doesn't always need a decade to write a story. And to me, that's frustrating.
So on the one hand, sure, he needs to take his time. And especially with the last season being taken so poorly, I'm sure that has added to the stress of writing these final books. But I think there are legitimate criticisms of his writing practice to be levied against him.
i think also something frustrating is he keeps doing interviews that and not really having anything to show for them
kind of comes off as him almost being spiteful like who goes in front of a crowed and announces....yea i have not really done any work this year well see you at the next interview
and for the record im more a casual fan im not that upset i just can see why a lot would be
You can't rush inspiration. He might have been inspired to write the other books he wrote, but not the new ASoIaF.
The thing is though he can do whatever he likes...
Just wanted to add that he also worked/works with FromSoftware on their newest game Elden Ring, so he is starting to put in alot of effort in different directions while not finishing his previous work. While I honestly dont really care about A Song of Ice and Fire, I think its understandable that the fans are a little frustrated although everything that goes beyond that is obviously not justifiable.
@@samuelabbottchannel Yes he can, and likewise, we can criticize him for it.
I try to be lenient with GRRM because I know how hard the creative process can be and how huge a project ASOIAF is ... But I really don't think it's "impatient" to expect him to have finished ONE BOOK after NINE YEARS.

George, I think we're well past "instant gratification" when it's been around a decade since the last book. 😂
Preach
I've often thought that it was fortunate for Tolkien that LotR was written in relative obscurity. He was largely able to work on the story as he saw fit and only took feedback from a handful of trusted people. The later Harry Potter books appeared to suffer from Rowling trying to live up to fan expectation and make each more "epic" than the last but really just making them progressively more bloated. I won't pretend to know why it's taken Martin 10 years and counting to write this book, but I don't think the constant attention and grousing helps him at all. Nor do the constant invitations to speak, the adaptations of his work that want him to consult/write, etc. We'll never know, but if this series had been nothing more than a low-key fantasy hit until after the final book was released, I suspect that we would have already seen the series conclude years ago. As it is, I just hope that he finishes it at all.
It took about 18 years from the original publication date of the Hobbit, to that of Return of the King. How many years ago was A Game of Thrones published? It's amazing how quickly your writing can progress when your story isn't bogged down with unnecessary descriptions of food and armour/clothing, lists of minor characters' formulaically colourful nicknames, long lists of songs played at weddings (Iron Lances, the Day They Hanged Black Robin, Two Hearts That Beat as One...), gratuitous rape scenes, and insanely graphic descriptions of an underage female protagonist's anatomy.
I would almost agree with the first comment if not for the fact that GRRM has been very publicly making profit by making easy cash-grab side projects and enjoying his (decaying) fame while disregarding what made him well-liked in the first place
I think its just that its been ten years since the last book released and he seems to take up new projects rather than prioritize finishing the series.
Jack Pooper 15 years
And barely even books, hes been working on world building fir fucking board games and shit not even connected to his works
@@denegwynn2869 What the fuck are you saying, the last book released in 2011. It's been 9 years, not 15.
I think your right, it could be laziness as well but like you said its probably more because of time management. He's to busy now doing a bunch of other projects he just doesn't have time to finish. Most writers release their stuff first before movies are made on it not the other way around and I think that will be the doom of the rest of the books and we might not ever see them. Shoot now they are talking about doing a new series that starts 300 years prior, and I'm sure Martin is helping them with the material.
@@michaelmichaelagnew8503 Dude is an old man. If he wants to spend his later years doing as many different things as he wants, he can. He already knows how the story is going to end. I do worry about him passing away before they are done. He has so many projects and i wonder if he will finish them all. I really hope winds is almost done.
Loni Rowell I know he has the next 2 ASOIAF books planned out and as far as what happens, he has it all planned out & he may even have some chapters written for it because I think he said some of it will actually take place at the same time as Winds but idk.

@Omar Sabbagh GRRM is the #1 reason the show ended shitty. D&D didn't sign up 10 years ago to finish writing this story. They signed up to adapt it. GRRM never finished the books and just loosely told HBO his ending and then D&D just had to write all of it.
@Omar Sabbagh So your blaming DnD for not being able to match the talent of a once in a generation Writer, When they didn't sign up to write any part of this story?
@@Deukapi I don't think so, honestly. A lot of what went wrong with season 8 went wrong because they rushed into it and did it wrong. Martin could easily end his books with a similar conclusion (all the core plot points being the same) and it could still be a masterpiece because he'd have written it well.
In other words, it's not necessarily season 8's plot points that were bad, but they had so little foreshadowing, so little build up, so little context that they came across as nonsensical. If season 5, 6, 7 and 8 as a whole were season 8 or even 10 seasons (ie, if they had time to properly develop and build up their plot points) then this wouldn't have happened.
all the peoples saying rush the ending is exactly that. be careful what you wish for.
@Omar Sabbagh Right, if they took the time to really adapt the books they would still be making seasons of book cannon content. They rushed through the story dropped a bunch of plotlines, ruined the representation of characters, killed off many characters for the sake of killing them, and lost passion for the project. That's not George's fault. D and D signed the contract knowing the series wasn't complete. Even if the story was complete I doubt they would have adapted it well. They were dropping the ball as early as season 3 with the Dorne storyline, one that is well fleshed out over three published books. They were fumbling published content and ruahing themselfs. It's no surprise, to me at least, that they fumbled unpublished content too. It was par for course.

I don’t think we’re that impatient at all. The last book was like a decade ago and the show ended on a low note
Yeah stupids fans. He ends the 5th book with quite a huge cliff hanger let them wait for a decade and they are impatient.
That also tells us when dumb and dumber had no books to follow, tv-show went downhill after that. George is between the rock and hard place, he could write earlier GOT-books silent and chill, but now there is constantly people asking: When the next book is coming? Also he knows that bar is set really high for waiting fans for he´s next book.
He don't owe you shit, leave the man alone
After the success of the series he suddenly got famous and rich but also is old and not in the best condition anymore.
I guess that's the reason why he lost any drive in finishing the series. He enjoyed his years in the spotlight and he's been enjoying his wealth a lot and there's no more reason for him to continue writing.
@@JackoBanon1 I mean, for the sake of his reputation i guess and finishing a long project?
I think the real issue is he's created something he is afraid of ruining. I mean the first interviewer said "if you didn't release the rest you'd be one of the greatest authors of all time" and many people believe that. That's a lot of expectation on one person. His books were always popular, but I think the show made ASOIAF so big, that he's worried more that the end won't be as grandiose, or perfect as the rest of the series has been built up to be.
Standard problem for most Garderner types....
Worst problem is though, he has to write a sequel to over 700k words by only using about 400k while also keeping the same pace. That's hard. That's REALLY hard.
I feel he wrote himself into a whole and now that the tv series aired, he is trying to make it different

I would think a lot of people didn't lose interest because his last book was published after the 1st series of GOT came out and since the series concluded less than a year ago lots of people would still be interested in reading it. Especially since lots of people would have gotten into the books from watching the series.

I've never seen a single episode of "Game of Thrones" but read all of the books. I don't want to watch the series ever. I want to read the rest of it😭😭😭😭 gaawwwdd
if you ever do just stop at season 5, you wont regret it lol
Don‘t ever watch the show. The books are 1,000 times better
The first 5 seasons (especially the first one) are really similar to the books, because they are the adaptations of the books, the season 6 it’s good, has epic moments and RR Martin was behind it so it will not be so different from the book, but in the 7 and 8 season Martin wasn’t there anymore and leave instructions of how it had to end, but not how the f... it will get there because at the time he didn’t know so those seasons may differ from the book but we don’t know how much and maybe he would decide that he doesn’t like that end anymore and change everything.
In conclusion, the series are good and really loyal to the books, the first season it’s just like the books, except from small things like Renly appearing for the first time in Kingslanding, so it doesn’t affect the history a lot in that season and at the long run obviously some arcs and events happen different or don’t happen but you’ll understand since the books supports more info and history than the books (that on the first 5 seasons). If you take the advice of only watch the first 5 seasons, you will really appreciate and enjoy them and if you decide to watch the rest don’t take them too seriously and alway remember that the history in the season 6 it’s not that accurate and the history in the 7 and 8 will be totally different (except for the end, maybe).
Everything from seasons 1 to 4 is top tier. Season 5 is drawn out too long and from season 6 to 8 it just turns into such a generic action medieval show which contradicts a lot of GRRM's rules in story telling.
You're not missing anything to be honest.

I would be defending him if it wasn't taking 11 years to finish 1 book.
The truth is, since the show ended (and arguably since it's decline in quality of writing became apparent) people became desperate to get the true end of this story. The thing is, it seems like it'll never come, I don't have much more faith that I'll ever hold this book in my hands honestly.
11 years. He has no excuses.
I'm not a writer myself, but as I was reading the last two books, and specially with the Aegon reveal, it just seems to me that if a story has beginning, middle and end, introducing characters and opening plot lines is something you should do at the beginning, not at the middle. If the 5th book is still in the beginning, then how are you going to end in two books? surely you need another 5 at least. As I say I'm not a writer, but I will be surprised if he can indeed finish in a satisfactory way in 7 books. Seems like he would need 10 at least. Which of course will probably never happen.
He's "people are entitled and they want instant gratification" is bullshit though.
I think he could do it in 8 books total. The Aegon story line might not take too long to wrap up. He could possibly do it in 7 books total but it might be difficult since Dany still hasn't left Essos and is actually just being found by the Dothraki at the end of Dance. I wish he was younger and could have all the time he wants to write a bunch of books in the series and then write a few more Dunk and Egg novellas, but it is what it is.
The last two books should have been one book, trimmed and shortened to a faster pace. George has one great problem...he is a gardener and that is fine if you start writing a story. Then it is good, because it makes it easier to write, but once you reach a certain point you must make a plan and I think George has no plan beyond some cool ideas. I think he is struggling to pull all these characters together, but I do not think he can do it without cutting plot and killing off chracters.
that story is so good that´s why we are so impatient and not all questions and mystery left behind are resolved yet. i could wait 1-3 years until i hoped every christmas this year winds of winter came out. Now it is longer than 5 years and i give up. :(

@@pramitbanerjee he is some what both but more of a perfectionist than any thing else. He was about to release winds years ago but decided to do major rewrites to get it just right.
When he speaks of the impatience created by internet culture, I disagree that it is a generational phenomenon. I think the internet simply amplifies impatience.
I know many older people who have fallen into a pattern of being extremely impulsive and impatient, wanting instant gratification, and this behavior is exacerbated by access to the internet. On the other hand, I know many young people who are extremely patient, respectful, and have the will power to delay gratification.
Whether or not the internet can influence a person into a pattern of impatience I think has more to do with their existing personality and experience than what generation they belong to. In fact, I would go as far to say that generalizing any behavior as belonging to a single generation will always be an incorrect statement.
As I type, we are in the middle of a quarantine, and if you look at the people who at this moment are desperate for things to return to normal versus the people who are content to wait, you will find that they cannot be catagorized by age.
Judging a group of people by what generation they belong to is also not a behavior exclusive to a single generation. It is not as if only old people are saying "Kids these days...", there are also young people who generalize the generation before them.
I honestly wish we would throw out the practice of identifying people by which generation they belong, as it is never useful, helpful, or necessary. It is only ever used as a tool to insult a particular group. Even if you are saying that a certain generation is good some regard, the unspoken thing you are saying is that every other generation is worse in that same regard.

Whenever people tell me GRRM writes too slow, I ask them how fast they wrote their own epic fantasy series which is more like a dozen novels combined into one, with a wordcount larger than the Bible and the LoTR combined. People don't seem to comprehend the magnitude or difficulty of the literary task he is acomplishing. When they point to Stephen King to complain about his slow writing, I point out that most Steven King book can fit multiple times in the length of a single ASOIAF novel. Seriously, the work this man is making is quite literaly monumental in scope. Let him take his time to do it well.
Nah, there are bigfer books finished in a shorter time. Although I agree on the Stephen King example being stupid, he definitely doesn't need a decade for one book.
Not to mention that the speed at which Stephen King writes is borderline superhuman.
Stephen King is a great example of why he shouldn't write too quickly: King doesn't know how to finish a book. He's infamous for making novels that go really well for 90% of their length, and then fall apart in the last 10%. I'd rather wait fifteen years between books than have that happen to ASOIAF.
It took Tolkien 12 years to write Lord Of The Rings
Yeah it's easy to compare his output to someone who hasn't been writing professionally for decades. No shit some amateur isn't going to be able to write ASOIAF, but that criticism magically disappears when compared to Brandon Sanderson, Steven Erikson, Joe Abercrombie ... basically every other modern fantasy writer has a more consistent output.
It's not even necessary to compare him to other authors, though - you can look at the publication history of ASOIAF and just watch the exponential decay. He may have always been a slow writer, and I respect that, but clearly there is more to the story than just "writing is hard".
I think that he built a universe that was so incredibly large and complex that, at this point, it's extremely difficult to finish the series. Especially now that the show wrapped up and people have strong opinions about how the ending happened on the show. It's like when you start getting towards the ending of a long paper and you have to consolidate and resolve all of your main points.
He should just finish whatever he initially imagined. If it goes unfinished, it will be forgotten
I just want to finish the books before I die.
GRRM & Kentaro Miura, two authors whose work the world eagerly awaits.

berserk returns with a new chapter this month at least
@@MountAverage28 lol been years no new berserk. He only released when the anime aired lol
@@carval51 last year came a chapter and this month will also be a new berserk chapter what are you talking about
I feel like he has fallen out of love with the story
He's writing a lot of Westeros esoterica. Little side stories and things like that, so I think he still does love the world he's created. But Martin is clearly one of those authors who needs a strict editor and demanding publisher. Left to his own devices he'll write lengthy prose about nothing without advancing the story and go down blind alleys.
I bet he's not the only one !
instant gratification creating expectations? The last book was over 10 years ago, and you started over 30 unrelated projects in that time frame
I understand his position but at the same time, there is a limit on how long you should take between books.
If he’s doing everything he can and it’s taking this long, fine.
I do not feel like that’s the case.
Something tells me that the delay is due to the poor reception of the show’s ending and his need to revise his original plan.
I mean, its almost been ten years since the last one. At this rate, its not looking good as to whether GRRM is going to finish... i think thats why the fans are so impatient
He's literally never going to finish it. It's over
