@TheHuwhiteKnight I think the problem not with the writers..George said this.. It's not the writers he has an issue with in this one particular case, it's the producers and studio
Why? Daenery's descent into Mad Queen has always been foreshadowed in the TV show and books. I won't be surprised at all if the books have similar endings except WITH WAY BETTER EXECUTION. The biggest problem with the TV show is that the entire Long Night battle should have lasted FOR ONE SEASON NOT ONE EPISODE. Same thing can be said with Daenerys's descent into madness and the war in King's Landing.

taking on 20 new projects, certainly didn't help either. My 80-y.o. grandparents are barely fit to do anything by themselves anymore - eyesight, hearing, memory - everything goes in the end, and faster than you think, too. George is already pushing 70. I wish him all the best, but I'm afraid he doesn't have that much time left to finish ASOIF, so we should all be ok with it staying on some cliffhanger ending for ever. It's his life, his decisions.
@@sudevsen i am always appalled by this sort of lack of empathy and basic knowledge of human capabilities. There is absolutely no way the books end like what we saw in the long night. Either D&D haven’t shared the last script, either he’s lying to keep the surprise element.
I think what he told them was very vague since he still has a lot of writing to do. Maybe it was just something along the lines of "yeah the white walkers will get defeated in the end but I'm still not sure how exactly" and even then I'm pretty sure they are taking massive liberties in choosing how to progress the storyline. I can't imagine that George was planning for the demise of Littlefinger the way the show portrayed it for example.

Maybe the bad ending to the night king storyline (or the bad ending to general story) will motivate GRRM to finish the books before he dies because he doesnt want the bad show ending to become his legacy...
Maybe, but his probably wouldn't have fit into 6 TV episodes. There will certainly be debate as to whether the ending could be better done in the constraints of a single season.
I've been to a book signing / speech of him when he was promoting the third book. This was around 2001. I had no idea who this guy was but I remember him saying that if he has anything to do in a day he can't do anything writing, for example if he has a dentist appointment in the afternoon he couldn't write a letter. His life became very busy in the last decade so that's why he didn't finish the series. I bought his first book and had it signed. Never read it but I remembered it when the TV show came out and it had nearly the same name.
Will Mosse it’s been 8 years since his last book and he claims he still needs a few years to finish....that means he isn’t even averaging a page a day.
I’ve got this inner feeling that he’s done with ‘’winds of winter’’ and just waiting for season 8 to finish so the show doesn’t shadow the book or vice versca
No despite having planned on finishing it years ago, I think he's still got a massive amount left and is a little overwhelmed by how much he has to do with such little motivation, we'll never get The Winds of Winter, much less A Dream of Spring.
Akaakaaka ak we probably will, just give him time to perfect his art. We already know The show is going to wrap up before the books come out so it doesn’t matter now.
That’s the problem, George told D&D the major storylines on how he imagines the series ending and D&D were incapable to write a coherent story arc and reasonable characters development to get there. They just threw the ending in our face unprocessed. And due to their incapability and luck of writing talent they destroyed the TV series

And wouldn’t Jon snow killing the night king be much more fan service then arya doing it?
A twist is not a good thing when it washes away all the build-up that came before. It all meant nothing in the end. The Night King was killed by someone he doesn't know and Arya killed the all-powerful bad guy she never even met before. What kind of pay-off is that? It's NOT. That's the problem.

At the end of the day as fans we are going to have to accept both the books and the series for what they are; both have a huge significance in our culture today. I believe the series motivated a lot of people who were not avid readers to become readers and to analyze what they are reading.
True, theres so much content and so many storylines. Twd does it but they fkin suck already becouse theres not much there, theres like one storyline and thats it
eXpas04 plus the walking dead has 1 single main character and 1 single main threat that everything centres around- it has a lot less of a potential lifespan that GoT does
Too late now. I think what he meant is they would have had to have taken it much slower from the start, including much more detail all the way through.
But would the actors? Eventually people would like to move on. I've watched a few interviews with Peter Dinklage and he seems tired of getting questions about GoT. Some of these actors have to be getting burnt out on working on this show.
YaowBucketHEAD So true! The actors would want to move on to new projects. The actors would not want to be branded as the characters they portray in the show. They would want to grow and explore for their career and craft. That’s what sort of happened to Daniel Radcliffe and Elijah Wood. When you see them onscreen even when playing different characters you still see them as Harry Potter and Frodo.
Looking at his eyes, you can notice the sadness, the serie is ending before his books, almost crying, still respectful to the serie and the producers but sad about himself
That sucks but it's his own fault, he had 8 years to finish it. I'm just sad because I'm sure the last few seasons would've been on par with the first 4 if the producers had material to draw from. Some of the dialogue lately has been... not great, but Game of Thrones is still the best TV has to offer.
@KatarinaTVD - “it’s his own fault” - why be so harsh and judgmental? He is clearly struggling to get it done, and he clearly didn’t choose for that to be the case. If he could choose to just finish it off he obviously would, and you can see the anguish on his face that he hasn’t. How about a bit of human compassion and decency?
Yup. It's sad. But there was a way..he could have been approached to write screenplay for last 2 seasons. So in a way giving him opportunity to tell his own story AND keeping standard of the show same as before. And GRRM could have finished the book later with his own version of ending. That way he would get chance to give us 2 endings for the same story.

I love how HBO is like "We can´t afford more seasons or episodes." then "Well, here is this GoT spin-off series taking place thousands of years before GoT."
They want to end while the show is in it's climax popularity wise. TV shows usually have a wind up, burst of public interest, and then a wind down. It would be a bad business decision to keep the series going and try to herd a declining fanbase into an expensive prequel series.
@@avenderiel The dollar's the bottom line always unless it's indie. No way HBO is going to make the mistakes the CW and AMC did with their long term series'. The purpose of the show is to make money and have dragons, the purpose of the books is to tell a story. Two separate entities imo.
@@shizuma30 Sure, but at some point they have to get away from that thinking. If they thought like that from the start then Game of Thrones wouldn´t get its first season. Might just be me, but the GoT fatigue has already set in. Mainly because it has become more and more obvious that the writers have no idea where they are going (perhaps just like GRRM). In what universe would a GoT last season that falls flat and is boring push people into a prequel that is thousands of years before? When they realize there is no Sansa or Jon or Arya they won´t care unless the writing is phenomenal (fat chance). And the book fans probably won´t care about more fan fiction. I might be overly bitter, but clever writing and careful planning of the WHOLE story seems to be more successful. Just look at Marvel, consistent between like 19 movies. Then look at Star Wars where every new film tries to deal with the clusterfuckups of the last movie, with no clear notion of where it´s all going.
The problem with Dorne is that it has so many new characters in the block, it has a super intricate plot with so many outstanding questions, it has no written base on which to embroider, and an impossible ending to imagine. Staging the Dorne of the books meant having to recruit so many new actors (and money on the casting), putting them next to idols by now consolidated from the first season (ergo they could not compete with them in popularity, useless to walk around), having to invent an ending without being able to use the Griff (cut for the same reason), and having to invent it from scratch (and we all know how bad things are written ex novo by DeD). The solution chosen was the most economical one in terms of money and intellectual energy: reducing the cast to a minimum, making it appear the bare minimum (both the spectators will always be interested in Stark / Lannister / Targaryen, all the rest is boring for them), and let them die as soon as possible.
Having 5 more seasons would have utterly killed the series momentum and, like the Walking Dead, could have suffered from actors leaving before their role was properly finished.

D&D has already gone WAYYY off script off the books, GRRM just dont have the heart to say it out loud since he is doing promotion. They've been faithful, but damn. The treatment of some of his characters.
Even if he feels that way, GRRM is a professional and would never publicly criticize David and Dan. He's probably also legally obligated to help promote the show. He knowingly signed the TV rights over to HBO with everything that comes with that decision. Everyone gets something out of the arrangement even if the showrunners gave up trying to adapt his work years ago. We'll probably never know what he really thinks of any of this beyond what he's already said publicly. And as much as I'd like to know what he really thinks about this particular adaptation, I'm okay with never knowing as long as he's able to tell the story he wants in his own way at his own pace. Since he still completely owns his world, characters, and story, he's going to be able to do that regardless of what the show has done or will do.
Even if they went WAYYY off script, thats the right way to do it. Why would anyone like to watch a movie thats 1:1 exactly like the story in the books? I hope they differ massively in terms of ending so their are 2 endings.

LOL Indeed. Sometimes it takes authors a really long time to tell their story. They get writer's block, run into issues in their lives, take a break to do other projects, and eventually return to their world and story. Just look at how long it took J.R.R. Tolkien to tell the story he ultimately wanted to tell. And then look at all of the material that never actually made it into The Lord of the Rings. The same kind of creative issues can plague even the most talented of artists regardless of what kind of content they're creating. It happens to writers, manga/comic authors, musicians, directors, etc. You can't force creativity. It moves at whatever pace it needs to.

I really don't think Goerge RR Martin cares if he finishes the books. He seemed an ambitious and imaginative person when intending this series, but now I think he saw how much money he could make and lost that ambition. He sees at how famous his works have become even without being finished and now he has no motive to keep it going further. D&D offered to carry on with his project of writing the story and bought him off. I don't believe he will finish this story before he dies. Not for a second. He grew complacent with his wealth and fame and knows now that he doesn't need to do any more to carry on the series.

The problem is that most GOT viewers are the normal television audience, certainly not the readers: they look at the series with interest, they appreciate it and then once they are done they dedicate themselves to something else until the following year. By now the spectators have chosen their favorites. They want to see the Starks, they are interested in Dany, Arya, Tyrion, Jaimie etc. Introducing new characters at this point of the show only made sense if their role is to interact and expand the POVs of existing ones (like Oberyn in the fourth). People wanted the Starks' revenge, they wanted Dany's departure, they wanted Arya to check the names from his list. If in the fifth-sixth season the series would have been still, stretched and stranded by so many new entries, plots about conspiracies, mysteries among the mysteries it is likely that most of the audience would have felt taken for a ride and would have looked elsewhere. Now, already GOT is a "demanding" series of his (conspiracies, intrigues, mysteries and many different characters) let alone how it could be destabilizing for the average spectator the entry into block of 15-16 new characters scattered here and there around the world . If we think that in the fifth season 13 new characters have already entered the block, some of them quite important it is difficult to think that in 10 episodes they would have space for other storylines in addition to those already present

What was so horrible with ep. 4 that motivates it being the lowest ranking episode of GoT ever (and also receiving over 2000 bad scores on IMDB BEFORE even airing, strangely enough), ranked even worse than s.5 ep. 6? It seems utterly unreasonable. Was it the death of Rheagal people couldn't handle? Because I don't see it as illogical that a justifiably stressed and impatient Dany would make the mistake of falling ambush to Eurons fleet, hiding behind Dragonstone (you see the ships emerge from a narrow straight), and one dragon falling victim to his 10 + scorpions. They made a point about letting Dany not letting the troops rest, and Rheagal being wounded, something that would make him less acute of his surroundings and easier to take down (he probably flies slower and has worse reactions). Also, it looks a bit like Rheagals body is in the way of Drogons, making him a more likely target. It's an obvious mistake from Dany side not being better prepared, but it's a mistake that makes sense with her character. All episode we saw her stress growing. And since when did characters making grave mistakes become instantly bad writing? It's not like people reacted like this when Oberyn did his fatal mistake of letting his guard down in s.4. It's kinda similar, both things are dumb and shocking.
Some of the dialogue lately has been... not great, but Game of Thrones is still the best TV has to offer.
v44n Yeah, it’s sad

If they had included all of the stuff in Dorne then they wouldn't have caught up so fast. Dorne alone is 2 seasons, Iron Islands is 1 at least imo

Bummer. 🤣
The better question is "WHEN will George R.R. Martin end “Game of Thrones” books?"
No, a better question is "WHY will George R.R. Martin end "Game of Thrones" books?"
Even better Question is... Will the George R.R. Martin’s ASOIAF Books ever end?!
Not Game of Thrones, that is the first booke, the series of books is call the Song of Ice and Fire
all who say game of thrones book, they haven't read them, period.
2 books are coming.
I swear right here and now that if the book fixes the trash that happened in season 8 I will buy all his books at once and read them.
After season 4, everything is trash. I wish they had waited untill he completed his books and continued from season 5.
I like that he knew people were gonna fight on the internet over his versus D&D's ending
Q- How will George R. R. Martins final
GOT book ends?
A- In a bittersweet way with an
emotional farewell to all the epic
characters that I have known and
grown to love.
Richa G is betting that means Danny ansJon Snow fly away on dragons and The White Walkers destroy Westeros
Better Question is... Will George R.R. Martin’s ASOIAF Books ever end?!
No
Sayeed Ahmed yes
It’s 2022 and we still don’t know how it ends
lets hope that 10 years from now, game of thrones would be remade with the proper and complete material.
Everything was so perfect about this show before it catched up with the books...since the release of season 5 it kept getting worse and worse..
@@melonenkopf2790: Don't know why did they choose to deviate from the books. Budget would not have been the constraint since S1-4 were all time hits. Not sure what went wrong.
What sucks is that the cast was perfect for the show and if there are future adaptions they would be too old :(
The cast wasnt really perfect for the show. I agree with the actors of Tyrion, Tywin or Theon for example but Kit Harrington & Emilia Clarke (jon & Dany) the 2 main roles are mediocre actors
i’m pretty sure finding a new cast isn’t at all a problem. half of the current cast were nobodies when the show started.
To be fair D&D cut out a huge chunk of the book and then said “there was no material left”. Us book readers were like, are you serious?!
You cant adapt the books 1:1. They had a clear vision for the series and they went out of fitting material for this. What is so hard to understand there?
babasilikum I’m not expecting a 1:1, I’m talking about Dorne.
@@AmethystEyes Dorne, Lady Stoneheart, Golden Company, Euron vs Tyrells, Victarion in Essos etc. Sansa's story with Ramsay is an edgier rehash of Joffrey's, yet it took up so much time.
babasilikum I understand that but they cut things out that were major storylines. It’s not just a few minor characters.
We're just here blaming the producers. Did you think it was just their fault it got rushed? Some actors didn't want to continue with more seasons as far as the interviews I watched. They just wanted it done and move on with different things. Its the entire team that lost energy not just the producers. They could have added 2 more season and made a better ending that isn't rushed but not with this bad energy they had for I would say the last 2 seasons. But, it already gone. It already ended, they might make a recap in the future but it will never be the same because we get attached to the original characters. Will see where life takes us with game of thrones.
This man is a legend!
Book readers of GOT think they know what struggle is. I've been waiting for 30 years now for Miura to finish the Berserk-series. Just imagine, waiting years just to read a chapter of around 30 pages :D :D :D
Berserk-series? Never heard of that.
But checking now.
Just checked it!
I heard about the Berserk series. It's an anime and is actually ranked as one of the top anime in the world.
Victorianne Castle correct but the term is manga (nothing wrong with sayin anime) but don’t let manga heads here that lol they’re just like all book/comic/Manga readers and hate the anime/live action adaptations and usually don’t acknowledge them.
@@kvngslayer1242 yeah. they are very annoying.
He can rest easy knowing no one will be defending Dan & Dave's ending as superior to his
If we ever even see George’s ending
I really don't think Goerge RR Martin cares if he finishes the books. He seemed an ambitious and imaginative person when intending this series, but now I think he saw how much money he could make and lost that ambition. The guy is very intelligent and creative, but that doesn't mean he isn't greedy.
Imagine when people are so into your books that they don't want you to die before finishing the story. I want to write a book like that. 🤧
He will never finish TWOW.. He lost motivation.. Isn't it obvious? He's getting on with his life and starting his other projects.
I think he will finish TWOW. But for the last book it”s probably true...
Nahh dude, cmon, he won't leave the story unfinished like that. Besides, what other projects is he working on?
he could whip out a book in 1-3 years if he wanted, like with the first few books. No date for TWOW but it is in the works, with some chapters released to preview. only thing he's doing now is conventions
Sounds a lot like Tolkien's life He had so many more stories to tell but never got to do them all.. And to quote the man "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.'”
@@ibs201 8 years and counting since his last book

I hope and pray that his fate doesn't match that of the Night King. Like an abrupt end. I wish god give him good health so that we could get a better ending and explanations related to the story and purpose of white walkers. He has become a world asset now.
GRRM you are our last hope for a better ending of this story.
Winter came but went away faster then we thought!
Winter is gone
His name should be grandpa santa. Like the subtle smile in the end, its so adorable
The only thing that warm my heart about season 8 it's that George ending will definitely be much better written than what he got.
Even if it ends in the same way i'm pretty sure it will be way more logical, better executed and much more developted.
sure it will be way more logical and much more developed easy to show all that details in books but it's so hard to do it in a tv show
@@babylon_guy4848 of course is harder on TV when you are telling a story in 6 episode instead of 50
Watching him in 2020 and hearing him talk about how he thought the books would be done by now made me LOL.
Its even funnier in 2021
The most shocking death was the writing.
I dunno who'll sit on the iron throne but i know he/she will wear a plot armor
And will have an empowered vagina too.
I guess that means the entire story isn't Plot then? The stupidest term ever
@@cryhwks you dont get it do you
Yes, he did say they would be basically the same. However, he was very clear that there may be debates as to "whose ending was better." Implying he has a different outcome in mind. Which makes sense considering Dan and Dave decided to make Arya the one who kills the NK as a late decision only two years before they shot the final season.
"But it's not completely faithful" That's an understatement.
Stannis Baratheon yeah, because unlike the books the tv show is going to have an ending
'The girlfriends are shuffled and reshuffled' epic one 👍
It won't end. He's gonna take everything with him to his grave.
"or else we'd have to run another 5 seasons"
Don't know about you all, but 5 more seasons would be fine with me.
Michael Anthony it sounds good, but it would start dying kind of like season 5-8 TWD
@@dmitrixallo7072 I don't know. I'm good with more TWD episodes despite the a decline in caliber. I'm just one of those people that could watch anything if I bonded with the characters. That British show "The Misfits" showed me this about myself, lol
In the 5 years since I started watching GoT, I’ve always said that I will finish watching season 8, and then I will start to read the books. The reality is that because I’ve seen the show first, I will picture the actors in my head. It’s inevitable. But the books will still have that booky charm.
I met him last Aug when I was working at Worldcon. He's a very down to earth genuine guy.
It's good for him that they scew up the Series in the end. His books will be untouched forever.
If people are wondering why he said additional 5 seasons, it’s because how much content they is in books 5. A lot of stuff got abandoned in season 5 like Tyrion adventure after the end of season 4, the book and show drastic different from that moment onwards tbh. Plus the dorne plot line ...
wow, u must be an intellectual to know that.
@@albertobe3339 sarcasm? lol just wanted to point it out because for season 5 onwards people excused it due to running out of soruce material but reality that not entirely true. I still feel like they would have ran out of source materials eventually depends when winds of winter come out. However don't really blame the show runners because yeah it a long time and they probably want to move on and do something else.
Hopefully he can get it done in his lifetime and it’s better than the show. The battle of winterfell was such a let down.
I hope that the last book comes out when I finish reading the last book😩
I never thought he would finish before the series did.
Just watched season 8 ep 4 today. Fascinated by how D&D ruin it.
I thought they were the mind behind the show...
Guess, I shall wait your book.
Totally agree, but i don't know if he will finish book
Respectfully, I just don't get it. The script in itself doesn't seem incredible, even though you could argue it looked a bit aimbot-ish visually. Was it that scene that made you think the show was ruined? And why really? Dramaturgically it makes a lot of sense.
@@vikingringstedt4233 why not shoot the dragon with the queen on if they had so much time and accuracy with their shots...don't stick up for this garbage! They sailed down with no battle formations and she flew the dragons without a care in the world while heading for WAR. in the previous scene they acknowledged eurons fleet had arrived at kings landing, absolute garbage
@@mrsmokingskittles148 , So it's only this scene that pisses people of about the episode? Still don't get why people are so mad about it. Dany made a mistake because she is obviously stressed and impatient (she feels like she's losing everything), Sansa even warned or no to be to hasty.
Why didn't people outrage over the weirdness in Sam being surrounded and detected by wights and a WW in the s.2 finale but still being saved, or when the Lannisters attacked Syrio Forel one by one, and not even trying to grab Arya, who was their important target back in s.1? Or when Stannis had no idea that a 100 000 strong army was literally less than days march away from KL in s.2 ep. 9? I just feel like people are judging this season unfairly harsh.
@@vikingringstedt4233 the whole season was horrible stop being a shill
are you kidding me?..so you really think there would be a debate on whose ending is better?..shows writers clearly lacks the skill to do justice to an absolute gem of a storyline as evident after the season 4 so yeah there's no competition Georges ending is going to be the epic one and shows would be slightly above average
I wouldn't hold your breath. Not only has his writing gone downhill since ASoS, but he hasn't released a book in almost a decade. The guy is 70. I really don't think we're going to see his ending - only the ending he gave to Dan and Dave.
I would like the book ending to be significantly different from the series.
I only just started with the books and it is disappointing to know that by the time the last book comes out I will already know essentially how it is going to end, maybe with more details and slightly different paths, but it still bothers me.
Fame and success has destroyed this once amazing author.
No one will ever say that D&D’s ending is better than yours... there’s literally no way you could write a worst ending!!
The only way George RR Martin's ending is worst than Game of Thrones' is if he doesn't write it at all
After seeing season 8 episode 3 I am curious to know if that is something that Geroge had in mind...
Your assuming he had in mind anything, the lack of finishing books shows he doesn't have anything in mind
@@IMPERATOR-EL Most writers already have an idea of the general direction of the plot plus the ending of the story from the moment they begin writing.
